Sadly, there is a justified reason for hating Russians by the way.

The government they elected to power and refuse to remove has caused real damage to Americans over the past several years. They've fanned the flames of division to the point people can't even agree COVID is a serious disease or racism is bad. Trump was the tip of the iceberg; from gun violence to vaccines, it's been proven Russians have dedicated time, money, and resources to facilitating a civil war in the US.

And now Russian hackers have been able to successfully disrupt our gas and food supply abilities. Fortunately attempts to contaminate a Florida city's water supply, or the electric grid in the northwest and southeast were thwarted, but the threat remains.

Hell, they can't even start a thread on a gay website with relatively low traffic without linking to corrupted websites. The fact is, Russia has spent the past 75 years aggressively trying to be the villain. All they can do is threaten other countries and cause disruption. I challenge anyone to come up with 3 things a Russian has done in the past 25 years that has had a positive impact on the world (supplying weapons and sending mercenaries to prop up oppressive regimes doesn't count).

I mean R4 is right. I dated a Russian doctor who had known my late partner. We hooked up 2 years after my partner died and, although we didn't last for various reasons, he was a great guy. He also thinks Putin is a murderer and Russia is hell. Some of the Russian miniatures he collected were absolutely beautiful. He died in 2013 and they said it was a heart attack but rumor has it he died of a fentanyl overdose. He had become strange in his last years and I think growing up gay and having to hide it for so many years finally caught up with him mentally and the money and success in the US didn't make up for it. Sad because he was a nice man and had 2 daughters who now live in Boston that were close to him despite their parents' divorce.

The Russian people's propensity to revolt against their government has apparently withered and died. There is no longer a Spirit of 1917 apparently.

France still has a touch of their propensity to overthrow their government as demonstrated by the numerous strikes and job actions they take when they perceive their government has wronged them.

The USA seems to be rediscovering its propensity to revolt in certain quarters in recent years. The last major move in this regard culminated in the American Civil War.

The USSR was horrific but it propelled Russia onto the stage as a world leader. However since the USSR was dissolved, I think the question could be asked, "Are the Russian people truly better off?"

If not, maybe they should rise up and throw off their current government.

I love Russia and I hate Putin. They are not the same thing and the sooner everyone realises it, the better.

By the way, I find it hilarious that Americans here think that their country is much better than the CCCP just because they're allowed to buy more trinkets. It's a terrible place with terrible propaganda and more people hate it than they hate Russia as such.

It seems to us that Russians hate Americans far more than Americans hate Russians. The Russian media seems to feed the Russian people with lots of lies about the American people, very much like they do in North Korea. I also think the poor impression most Americans have of Russians comes from the fact that you keep voting that heinous killer Putin back into office.

Another problem we have is that there are so many instances here in America where Russians who've come here to live and indeed live very prosperous lives, are found to be scamming our welfare system. Living in big homes, driving big expensive cars, and getting a check from the government every month they do not deserve. So many Americans automatically assume all Russians are scam artists and thieves.

One of my best friends is a German man married to a Russian woman. Although she was quite cold when we first met, I now know her to be very kind and giving. Actually, her whole family is that way. I was once talking to her brother who had returned from a holiday in Egypt, and he was showing me a cool belt he had bought with a crocodile head. As soon as I said I liked it, he took it off and insisted I take it.

I hate, hate, hate the Russian government for their efforts to completely destroy civility in the US, while attempting to do severe economic damage as well. However, in my heart of hearts I don’t hate Russians. I might be initially mistrustful of them, but I know at the end of the day most of them are people who love their friends and family and just try to do the best they can to survive.

I’m very interested in Russian history and would love to visit St Petersberg, Moscow, and even Siberia one day. That said, I wish the people would do more to show they want a government that doesn’t behave like a cartoon villain. In the early aughts, lots of Ukrainians and Russians bought condos there and, though their English was awful, they were pretty good neighbors. Kept things clean, no noise, nice plants and though I also found their wives gaudy they were super kind when they saw me with my dad in a wheelchair (he stayed with me for a month after his stroke and I took him to the pool under the gazebo a lot). Always offered to hold the gate, brought over chocolate and later said "Hi, how is fader? Bietter?". The average person is not necessarily bad, their leaders are corrupt criminals. Of course my neighbor said "Russia having bad leader because people only trust strong people" (I.e. they are not really democratic-minded).

Generally good people born and raised under an awful system. Always an awful government. I’ve been to Russia five times since 1998. Life IS better for ordinary people than it was then but they still have a long way to go.

St Petersburg has some beautiful places to see. That’s nice but hardly enough because they’re almost all from the Czarist past. There’s little therr of any significance from 70 years of Communism with the possible exception of the monument to defending the city and surviving the Nazi siege.

I have been to Russia several times and have always found the average Russians are usually good people. But, after several centuries of totalitarian governments, their perception of the world and their part in it is not always realistic. Russians have also perfected the art of looking the other way as needed.

The best way to get a Frenchman to smile and be nice to you when you visit France is to learn enough of the French language so you can make yourself understood. My two main experiences of Russians have been in two settings - holiday resorts and in gaming.

At holiday resorts, they have been noticeably rude and demanding with staff, and just generally seem to have a bad attitude and negative vibe.

In gaming, they are usually the very worst players, and the most toxic - raging, flaming, abusive.

I'm sure there are some nice Russians around and I don't want to generalise an entire nationality but this has been my experience. Add to that their notoriously corrupt government and overall homophobic attitudes, I have to say I don't have a favourable impression.

Many people judge the people of a foreign country solely by the worst people they have to offer. And that's usually because the bad examples of their society are more apt to make it into the media than the good ones.

To know Russians is to hate them.
