Why are there no good rat cages?
My mom rescued a baby rat that was about to be killed by our cat. She got a cage at PetSmart which she doesn’t like. It’s hard to clean and it’s flimsy. Some pieces broke while she was setting it up and it had missing pieces.
I’ve been trying to help her find a better rat cage, but they all have poor reviews. And what’s bad is that so many reviews say the rats are chewing through these cages or the wire is bent, and all of these other issues.
What do we do? It seems there are really no good rat cages.

Get an aquarium. That's what I did when I had pet rats. You just need to make sure the top is secure and they can't get it off. They will try. Smart little shits.

Rats are wild animals and should live in the wild. She should take him way out in the country and set him free.

Yes, I think an aquarium would work. However, make sure it's large enough for the rat when it's full-sized. My neighbor (when I was little) had tons of pet rats. He had several different types of cages. He put a pregnant rat in a small aquarium. The pregnant rat was already kind of wild-tempered. The rat gave birth to something like 12 babies. One day, we looked into the aquarium and there was only a skeleton of one of the babies. I'm not sure what happened, but I'm guessing the smallness of the aquarium didn't help.
Yes, the mother and/or sibling rats ate the one little baby / brother / sister rat.

Domesticated pet rats are nothing like wild rats. DO NOT KEEP WILD RATS AS PETS.

Enjoy the plague, OP.
Why the fuck would you keep a wild rat as a pet?
