I'm hearing on Twitter both bar and restaurant, and the Statesman article kind of sounds like people were shot outside in a downtown area with multiple places still open. So far no one has been reported dead, I believe.

I've watched CNN all morning and they didn't even mention it once. There are some amazing videos on Twitter. Paramedics giving CPR to a shooting victim, while drunken folks continue partying right next to the victims in crowded bars.
We live in surreal times. Looks like no one is giving a fuck anymore. Soon everyone in Texas can buy and openly carry a weapon. Good times.

What number is best so Republicans in Washington will send the victims "Thoughts and Prayers"?

You're on a gay site and using "eat a dick" like a pejorative. Idiot. Also, if you exclude cops shooting unarmed black people, what about the pieces of shit cops who beat up the elderly (like that woman with dementia that was recently in the news), or the cop who knocked down the guy at the protests last year and walked right past him as he laid bleeding, or the cop who after taking in a woman for a DUI went through her phone and sent himself her nude photos.
Keep sucking up to these all too corrupt Neanderthals.

We have already given cops so much money and they didn’t do shit about this problem. Actually, in many cases they have made the problem worse.

At least you admit there is some truth to BLM's narrative, which is a cry further than what we can say about the narratives spewed by the right.
It's sad that people getting shot on a routine basis brings out even more trolls basking in the glory of violence, but this is the choice we've made. Despite 5000 years of recorded human history providing ample evidence that working together results in better outcomes than rugged individualism and going it alone, we still cling to the latter as though the former leads to death and ruin. And then we wonder why people getting shot doesn't make the news.

That’s not a revolution, it is simply a depressive with a gun and ammo
by Anonymous | reply 41 | June 12, 2021 4:21 PM |
Agree, R41.
Its usually a puss-bag straight guy who can't handle not being promoted or being dumped and instead of manning up and getting help or doing the world a favor and eating a bullet for breakfast, decides to kill other people. Because he's entitled to make that choice, of course! And yes, "suicide by cop" because that same wimp can't take facing the consequences of his violence.

Someone who lives near me got shot the night before last. He lived in a gated yachting community and was CEO of a yacht brokerage and he and his wife went to dine at the Capital Grille in the Galleria area. Apparently, the perps in a white SUV followed them from the restaurant to their home which is down in the League City/Kemah area (a bit of a drive) and confronted them in their garage. Husband shot and the perps ran out on foot. Yep, shootings do happen every day in Houston. The mystery here is how did someone get followed that far and not notice, follow them through security gate and not noticed and why were they targeted? Fancy car, wife bejewelled? The Galleria, despite being upscale, seems to attract quite the criminal element waiting for prey.

R131 this has NOTHING to do with gun control as almost ALL gun related homicides are done by illegally obtained guns
That being said, MOST people, even most gun owners, want gun control and WELCOME it
I'm a gun owner and took me MONTHS of background checks and searches for me to get my gun and I completely understand it
If he didn't get a gun he probably would have rammed his car into the crowd, if someone WANTS to kill.people, they'll find away

by Anonymous | reply 182 | June 13, 2021 10:25 PM |
Gun violence is of course a serious issue in this country, but for the people saying they’re scared, a little context please.
2020 was a record year for gun homicides (excluding suicides here) — about 18,000. That may sound like a lot but that means on average you have a 1 in 18,000 chance of being killed by someone with a gun.
Considering that more than half of victims were black males, a part of the population that makes up just 6% of the population (!!!), if you aren’t a black male, the direct threat of gun death vanishes into almost infinitesimal chances.
(Of course if you’re a black male it’s a fucking disaster.)
If you’re female the chances plummet *even more.”
Contrast that with deaths in car accidents — 1 in 9,000.
Should we do something about gun violence? Yes, and decisively so. Should you be afraid to leave your house? No.
by Anonymous | reply 183 | June 13, 2021 10:25 PM |
Biden issued some executive orders and clearly started the process, practically begging the Senate to take up some gun control/reform... so he did what you want, R181. Beyond that, again, in the face of the filibuster and an gridlocked Senate, what do you want him (or any president, for that matter) to do? Do you understand the role of the president, or is it simply beyond your abilities?
by Anonymous | reply 184 | June 13, 2021 10:26 PM |

I completely agree with the regular poster on these shooting threads that says “nothing will change.” In fact, it will continue to worsen. I’m just thankful I’m not out after 10pm anymore (who am I kidding, I’m home by 9 now) and fairly safe. I know they happen during the day as well, but in my city, most of this random violence happens well after 10pm as a result of drugs and alcohol.

I think what's telling is that R189 focuses on NY and Chicago, and neither city places in the list of top 20 cities with the most gun violence... not that you'd admit that or even know that because it doesn't fit your narrative.

R183, did you conclude that the probability of being shot is 1 in 18,000 because 18,000 people died, or did you do the actual calculation? I ask because by pure coincidence, the square root of the US population of 325 million is actually around 18,000, and it's only in this particular situation that X people dying means that there's a one in X chance of someone dying.

In every country in the world that has tight gun controls, criminals have LESS access to guns than non-criminal citizens.
I don’t see mass shootings & gun crimes taking place in Australia, where they handed in their guns after a mass shooting. Besides, aren’t you NRA people all pro-police? All you need to do is make tighter gun laws, step back and have police to do their job if keeping guns off the street.
What…don’t you believe cops can do their jobs? Of course you do! I have every confidence that police will enforce gun laws and get illegal guns off the streets.

Words matter. They frame how we think about things. "Isolated" is not an appropriate way to think about a dispute in which 16 people got shot.
"Isolated" is the NRA talking. Don't ever forget that. That's how Wayne LaPierre would love for you to think about this. It was just an isolated dispute, move along, nothing to see here, no need to legislate.
