Either black or brown shoes are "correct" with a gray suit. There is a movement toward brown shoes, I think, because they offer more potential in the patina department. Great brown shoes look luxurious. If the suit is dark gray, however, the shoes, if brown, should be dark brown.

I wear suits a lot or used to. Light-colored suits are really hard to wear. They do make you look fatter. If the fabric and craftsmanship are lacking, it will show up in a light-colored suit. Dark-colored suits do make you look slimmer and just do look more expensive, even if fabric is cheap.
