I listened to it too. While it was no big deal, Lovett's jokes just didn't land and he kept forcing them. He can't "read the room" for shit, as they say, and it was a wee bit cringey. Pete Buttigieg is a total nerd and sort of doesn't roll on that frequency. That said, his Lucille Bluth response to Lovett was perfect.

Jon Lovett can be smart and thoughtful when he wants to be, but he does have a tendency to act like an immature ass during the "Pod Save America" podcasts. It's the main reason I stopped listening.

I agree with the criticism. Buttigieg is stodgy and stiff and he's not the right kind of person to fling those sorts of comments at and expect him to answer, not to mention that he's an ambitious Democrat politician and we have seen the party take down Howard Dean for howling on the radio and Al Franken for making a sexual joke, among so many others. It's not right to put Buttigieg in such an awkward position. He agreed to do the show but I listened not knowing what to expect and I was really put off by the interviewer.

And yes, there's some irony in that he is Satchel's partner given that Satchel destroys the careers of men who sexually harass people on the job while pairing off with a man who sexually harasses people on the job.

People here are saying Buttigieg married down after Buttigieg fielded a weird interview with Jon Lovett, a former political operative who apparently thinks he is Howard Stern. Do you guys really think it's not strange that a former speechwriter for Obama was so informal and sexually explicit in an interview with the US Secretary of Transportation? Does both of them being gay mean that the interview had to get graphic? This is one of those things I still don't like about being gay—in everyday life, ONLY gay men are asked things like "are you a top or a bottom?" in any setting, including at work and in media interviews. Imagine any interviewer asking any appointee about sex. It's fucking weird.

And with all the talk about marrying down, can we talk about the elephant in the room? Wealthy son of Mia Farrow and Woody Allen with a doctorate from Oxford, a JD from Yale, a Pulitzer Prize for reporting that sent a mogul to prison for life for serially raping women, and a bestselling book is engaged to...a podcast host and former speechwriter who seems to be on the spectrum and awkwardly interviews people with 'humor' that misses the mark every time. Satchel is *really* marrying down, and he should realize that Jon is not the only person on Earth who would love him despite his tiny hands and T-Rex arms.

Lovett crossed a line IMHO. Pete is plenty capable of being self effacing and has a good sense of humor but public officials shouldn't be goaded into immature dick jokes.
