We've reached peak narcissism: controversial Fresno professor, Randa Jarrar, creates 'artistic' video...

... that makes her look like a laughing stock!

I mean, what the fuck is she doing? Hahahaha!

by Anonymousreply 353April 15, 2022 1:01 AM

That is absolutely gorgeous! She's a star!

by Anonymousreply 1June 11, 2021 11:25 PM

Is that Lens?

by Anonymousreply 2June 11, 2021 11:25 PM

Send her off to the middle east. Surely she'll sort thing out.

by Anonymousreply 3June 11, 2021 11:28 PM

Beached whale.

by Anonymousreply 4June 11, 2021 11:28 PM

Think this woman is dead, not sure. I remember reading something about a late obese female photographer in a NY Times article. Perhaps it was another obese dark haired female 'artist' who photographed her body in graphic poses.

I can use that fan right about now.

by Anonymousreply 7June 11, 2021 11:31 PM

You just know it's less about honoring the original artist and mostly just about: "LOOK AT ME!"

by Anonymousreply 8June 11, 2021 11:33 PM

Lizzo is her inspiration

by Anonymousreply 9June 11, 2021 11:33 PM

Good grief. Who thinks this is a good idea?

by Anonymousreply 10June 11, 2021 11:33 PM

These fat bitches are going to die of diabetes. They’re not stars; they’re cautionary tales.

by Anonymousreply 11June 11, 2021 11:34 PM

She's looking at the camera like she's thinking: "You can't handle my confidence and sexuality" but really everyone is just laughing 'cause she looks ridiculous!

by Anonymousreply 12June 11, 2021 11:35 PM

The backside didnt look too bad... and then they showed the front. It always amazes me how some women gain weight on their stomachs like men.

Aside from her obvious future with diabetes, heart disease and increased cancer risk, what is this shit? A tasteful dress would have looked more beautiful. I dont get what this is supposed to be.

by Anonymousreply 13June 11, 2021 11:38 PM

She's FIERCE! and ROYAL! R13! That's what it's about.

by Anonymousreply 14June 11, 2021 11:41 PM

This is not art; I am not even sure it's a call for self-love. She's just a big fat girl with strings wound around her hoo-hah and tits posing on a beach and ruining the view. I'm fat and neither proud nor ashamed of it. But I certainly would not parade my shortcomings on a public beach with breathy portentous voiceovers from my lady friends. You fine, girl, you fine, come to my city and sit by me. You fat, you fine. The world does not need more ugly.

by Anonymousreply 15June 11, 2021 11:50 PM

Roxane Gay should have joined!

by Anonymousreply 16June 11, 2021 11:53 PM

And here’s the daring art piece by Randa Jarrar, titled “Tied Roast on the Rocks”.

by Anonymousreply 17June 11, 2021 11:56 PM

Yikes!

by Anonymousreply 18June 11, 2021 11:56 PM

What the fuck is wrong with people? Some people will do anything for attention.

by Anonymousreply 19June 11, 2021 11:56 PM

Thanks a lot, OP. For making me want to throw up.

by Anonymousreply 20June 11, 2021 11:58 PM

They are close friends apparently, R16. I wonder what she thinks of this privately?

It's not art as R15 says. You could definitely make some wonderful body positive art, but this is not it.

R19 has hit it on the head. She wants everyone looking at her all the time, and she doesn't care how far she has to go to get it. I saw an interview with her a couple of months ago where she was STILL going on about how horrible it was that white women belly dance - desperate to keep that 'controversy' (ie the one piece of writing people actually know from this woman) alive.

by Anonymousreply 21June 11, 2021 11:59 PM

Egad!!!

by Anonymousreply 22June 12, 2021 12:03 AM

Is it wrong that I was waiting for the fan to fall on her head?

by Anonymousreply 23June 12, 2021 12:03 AM

The Palestinian flag was a nice touch, but I didn't get the purpose of the fan.

Could someone enlighten me?

by Anonymousreply 24June 12, 2021 12:05 AM

Don’t give Chrissy Metz any ideas!!!!

by Anonymousreply 25June 12, 2021 12:05 AM

The fan is such an odd touch to an already extremely odd video...

by Anonymousreply 26June 12, 2021 12:05 AM

"Randa Jarrar is the Arab femme daddy of my dreams and her voice is nothing short of ROYAL."

by Anonymousreply 27June 12, 2021 12:10 AM

"Does this macrame plant hanger make me look fat?"

by Anonymousreply 28June 12, 2021 12:15 AM

I had a look at some of these Laura Aguilar pics to see if the fan made sense. There is one picture of her lying on a chair under a big open window with a fan in front of her, but whatever Jarrar is doing, it's way too clumsy to be an homage to that. If that's what she's going for, she's really fucked it up:

Good Lord. Welcome to the 4 years of hell I went through in Film School sitting though hours of this garbage! Fucking liberal arts grossness, run amok!

by Anonymousreply 30June 12, 2021 12:25 AM

Surely under her own rules about these things, it is 'approppriative' for her to use the work of a Chicana (or Chicanx as I see people saying online) artist like this?

I don't believe this myself, but aren't these the very rules she is always criticizing others for not following?

by Anonymousreply 31June 12, 2021 12:26 AM

Hmm....I shall go find a rock to sit upon and ponder the significance of that fan.

by Anonymousreply 32June 12, 2021 12:28 AM

Good heavens, I can still see that thumbnail image when I close my eyes.

by Anonymousreply 35June 12, 2021 12:30 AM

What in Randa Jarrar is going on here?

by Anonymousreply 36June 12, 2021 12:30 AM

I dont see art. I see, "look at my fat. Fat is beautiful. If you dont agree, you are a vile pig. Like me. Im a pig. Pigs are beautiful. Look at my fat".

by Anonymousreply 44June 12, 2021 12:39 AM

I can't believe she's lying on a flag. I assume from her name she is Palestinian? Her people must be so proud!

by Anonymousreply 45June 12, 2021 12:39 AM

Well, at least ONE of us is full!

by Anonymousreply 46June 12, 2021 12:39 AM

Yeah, how exactly is she helping the cause of the Palestinian people? Even her activism is all about her and not the people she says she wants to help.

by Anonymousreply 47June 12, 2021 12:40 AM

No wonder STEM people laugh humanities folks out of the room

by Anonymousreply 48June 12, 2021 12:42 AM

How the hell would people even notice the flag unless they sit through the whole video? Yes,it's next to her, but that's not exactly where the camera is focused. Pretty fucking stupid.

by Anonymousreply 49June 12, 2021 12:43 AM

QUICK! Somebody call Greenpeace and have her towed back out to sea!

by Anonymousreply 50June 12, 2021 12:43 AM

I'm not gonna lie, I would've laughed so much if other people on the beach saw her and ran over to her, throwing buckets of water on her to keep her alive 😂

by Anonymousreply 51June 12, 2021 12:45 AM

Lena Dunham is [italic]not[/italic] playing.

by Anonymousreply 52June 12, 2021 12:46 AM

R2 EXACTLY! I just read your post, lol.

by Anonymousreply 53June 12, 2021 12:47 AM

Somebody commissioned her to do this? What is going on in the world?

by Anonymousreply 54June 12, 2021 12:49 AM

It's certainly jarraring.

by Anonymousreply 55June 12, 2021 12:50 AM

I think she's tremendous.

by Anonymousreply 56June 12, 2021 12:51 AM

Quite big tits.

by Anonymousreply 57June 12, 2021 12:57 AM

To add insult to injury, she has the most fucking annoying Valley Girl accent. For someone who hates white women so much, she sure likes speaking like them!

by Anonymousreply 58June 12, 2021 1:00 AM

R58 Maybe it was an artistic choice.

by Anonymousreply 66June 12, 2021 2:26 AM

R16, apparently she's from a similarly wealthy family like best pal Roxane too. Their constant telling off others from privilege is quite funny in this respect.

by Anonymousreply 67June 12, 2021 2:56 AM

R67, I went to Jarrar's website, she once lived in Old Greenwich, CT (I'm guessing that's rich people country) and went to Sarah Lawrence College.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 68June 12, 2021 2:59 AM

Yeah, she apparently grew up very well off, R68. Also not above making up some crazy (potentially defamatory) stories to cast herself as a victim in many situations, from what I've read.

Like a lot of immensely privileged people, she desperately wants to imagine she is THE most oppressed person out there.

by Anonymousreply 69June 12, 2021 3:01 AM

Is there a transcript of what she's saying? So much babbling!

by Anonymousreply 70June 12, 2021 3:02 AM

I’m an art dunce, but I did find the older photo by the other artist, a fat woman chilling out naked in front of a fan, surprisingly beautiful and serene.

Tangled up in cords on rocks with a fan - clumsy, awkward, meaningless.

by Anonymousreply 71June 12, 2021 3:11 AM

Fanny Flag

by Anonymousreply 72June 12, 2021 3:12 AM

It's so hard, because there are at least two overlapping voices from what it sounds like to me. I'll give it a go:

VOICE ONE: Dear Laura, you once said there was a time when you felt ashamed of the color of your skin. When you discovered art, your culture and the history of others with struggles and that the knowing led you to find yourself. Laura - I'm the same. From Palestine to Mexico, our hometowns are one. I live in your hometown now in East Los Angeles. I see you, your nudes in the rocks, in the mountains around my home. Your beautiful nature portraits. Your nude body being your body of work. But it is when I visit the ocean that I can feel you and your power the most. Out here, it's like I'm a sand (?) needing the wind. I bounce. I bounce and cover myself in bondage rope. Pleasure, rather than captivity. I celebrate you Laura, and I thank you for helping me understand how to celebrate myself.

VOICE TWO: Dear Laura, it's Randa. Um, I'm at the beach with my girlfriend, she took me to see you, so... Yeah, I, I just really want you to know that you mean a lot to me. You fucking rock. You inspire me so much, as a Palestinian, as a fat, fuckin' queer, as a fat femme. I'm showing my face in these, I know that you usually had your body turned away and I respect you for that. There's a part of me, I guess that just feels like, it's - I'm protecting myself by having my pretty but fat face in these videos. Boo, I'm, you know, leaving you a voice mail, um you're in the beyond, but I'm hoping that your gorgeous, gorgeous self gets this. Um, here, here's an ass bounce for you, just for you, Boo. Feel it? Get it! Anyway, my Palestinian self is so, so grateful to you for everything you've done, everything you've done for all of us. I love you!

God that was painful! Can't say it's 100% correct, but it's the gist.

by Anonymousreply 73June 12, 2021 3:23 AM

Exactly, R71! I will admit, those pics aren't necessarily my style, but I can see she had an artists eye (and a sense of humour) and I can see why people would like them.

Whatever Randa was doing on the rocks? 'Amateur hour' isn't even the half of it!

by Anonymousreply 74June 12, 2021 3:29 AM

I don't understand how Mexican Laura Aguilar helped inspire Randa as a Palestinian... do these people just say words to pretend they are deep?

by Anonymousreply 75June 12, 2021 1:36 PM

I wonder if it's killing her that no one is engaging with it on Twitter? She's constantly trying to get back that 'fame' from when she criticized Barbara Bush, or Gal Gadot playing Cleopatra, but it just ain't happening.

by Anonymousreply 76June 13, 2021 12:53 AM

She should be thrown into prison.

by Anonymousreply 77June 13, 2021 1:21 AM

OP, you should have included a warning.

I blame Lens Dunham for this.

by Anonymousreply 78June 13, 2021 1:27 AM

That wasn’t an ass “bounce,” that was an ass and back tremor.

by Anonymousreply 79June 13, 2021 1:28 AM

Pigs are adorable. She is not.

by Anonymousreply 80June 13, 2021 1:31 AM
I blame Lens Dunham for this.

Can you really blame Lens and her ilk or the media, which so happily embraced her navel-gazing privileged bullshit?

by Anonymousreply 81June 13, 2021 1:35 AM

Hahahaha, R79!

Apologies, R78, you are right. Mea culpa! I hope you didn't lose too much of your dinner.

by Anonymousreply 82June 13, 2021 1:39 AM

That look on her face as she flashes her cunt at the camera is so hilarious. You can tell she thinks she's really making a statement! And she looks like a fool! Or, I mean, sorry, I should say a fat, queer, femme, Palestinian fool.

by Anonymousreply 83June 13, 2021 1:46 AM

I really want to time-travel back to 1950s and show them this. Blow some minds.

by Anonymousreply 84June 13, 2021 1:53 AM

Could she get arrested for doing this?

She'd probably love that, so she could then write a Salon article titled: "How I was unfairly arrested after I deliberately broke the law".

by Anonymousreply 85June 13, 2021 1:56 AM

How many cheeseburgers is that?

by Anonymousreply 92June 13, 2021 2:50 AM

I'd love to know if what she did was illegal, because I wonder if that was part of the thrill for her. She believes in abolishing the police entirely, so I imagine she'd love an altercation she could write about that too.

She deliberately tried to enter Israel by lying to authorities and going the wrong way about it, and has used that as fueling her own victim narrative for years.

by Anonymousreply 93June 13, 2021 2:53 AM

r92. There's no power in the universe to set an imbecile like you straight.

by Anonymousreply 94June 13, 2021 3:04 AM

Part of her "suit" does a hell of an impression of the equator.

by Anonymousreply 95June 13, 2021 3:07 AM

Women are held to such a low standard of behavior in the West. If this had been an obese man taking these photos, he would have been arrested.

by Anonymousreply 96June 13, 2021 3:34 AM

This is what interests me, R96 - surely she was in danger of it too? Like personally I don't actually care about public nudity like that, but I mean, it is the law isn't it? And she wasn't really hidden in any way. I just get the feeling she would've loved to have an arrest story to complain about.

by Anonymousreply 97June 13, 2021 4:02 AM

R98 A fat guy doing these stunts publicly would land him on a sex offender list. No one would call this art if it was a fat bear with a mushroom dick lying in the beach. Men are the only ones held to a social standard, and women are given a pass for morally gray behavior.

by Anonymousreply 98June 13, 2021 4:20 AM

I've heard of cases in the US of young guys streaking getting put on a sex offender's list (which seems excessive, here in Australia, streaking is almost a national sport haha), so I would absolutely believe someone rolling around on the rocks like this woman is here would get arrested.

by Anonymousreply 99June 13, 2021 5:54 AM

Agree that the earlier linked picture of the fat lady chilling with a drink in front of the fan isn't bad--it says something.

This fatso rolling around on the rocks seems to be saying nothing more than: I love myself and rope up my butt, I got the idea from the other photo with a fat lady and a fan, my identity as fat and female isn't enough--Palestinian must be shoehorned in.

by Anonymousreply 100June 13, 2021 6:46 AM
This fatso rolling around on the rocks seems to be saying nothing more than: I love myself and rope up my butt, I got the idea from the other photo with a fat lady and a fan, my identity as fat and female isn't enough--Palestinian must be shoehorned in.

Haha, spot on!

Seriously, she throws out phrases like: "I'm fat, I'm Palestinian, I'm queer, I'm femme..." like some juvenile teen trying to be daring and shock the adults would. Like people are going to think: "Oh my god, a fat, queer Palestinian, how DARE she?! I am so triggered!" when really people are just like: "What a strange woman!"

by Anonymousreply 101June 13, 2021 6:53 AM

The way she says: "Feel it? Get it!" in that video with that tired old "Yaas kween!" cadence really eye-roll worthy. This poor artist probably has no inclination to see this woman "bounce" her ass for her, dead or alive.

by Anonymousreply 102June 13, 2021 6:59 AM

R48, an acquaintance of mine, a journalist and writer, posted something rather ludicrous on her Twitter a month ago. She wrote that only Liberal Arts students will save the world and that no one would even notice or care if all the STEM graduates disappeared overnight.

She got a lot of congratulatory tweets affirming this nonsense from her echo chamber.

by Anonymousreply 103June 13, 2021 7:09 AM

Jesus, really R103? Look, I believe that Arts subjects are valid and it's a good thing we have them, but "no one would even notice or care if all the STEM graduates disappeared overnight"? How on earth was she able to say that with a straight face?

I'm sorry, but there wouldn't be much change if this Jarrar woman was no longer rubbing herself on rocks at the beach, or Roxane Gay wasn't publishing her latest "hot take", that is the truth of the matter.

by Anonymousreply 104June 13, 2021 7:49 AM

R104, this acquaintance has become increasingly loony in the last couple of years. She unashamedly embraces conspicuous capitalist consumption and is obsessed with fashion, but will lecture others on the evils of a capitalist society. She grew up very upper middle class and has only ever lived in affluent neighborhoods in various cities, but she often criticizes other middle class acquaintances for not wanting to live in rough urban neighborhoods. She has lived a life of privilege and seems to believe that the world's problems are all due to greedy, capitalist white men. She also immediately jumps on every "socially conscious issue" bandwagon, tweets or lectures endlessly about it, and then forgets all about the issue when she moves on to her next pet issue.

She used to work in academia and then got into writing and journalism due to her dad's contacts. She has never had to struggle for a single thing in her life and is blithely unaware of the irony of ranting about the uselessness of STEM graduates while using her mobile devices to use a social platform when riding a cab she booked on Uber.

by Anonymousreply 105June 13, 2021 8:01 AM

Very interesting R105! Thanks for sharing. She sounds... well, exactly like many of these other academics, including the subject of this thread. The blatant hypocrisy seems to be par for the course.

by Anonymousreply 106June 13, 2021 8:05 AM

by Anonymousreply 111June 13, 2021 8:46 AM

R106, I haven't spoken to the woman for a while now. She and I had a big falling out after she made some sweeping statement about how gay men (not "some gay men", mind) are racist, Islamophobic and transphobic. She won't listen to anyone who points out the rampant homophobia in Islamic countries and will immediately resort to whataboutism. She's another of the privileged straight women who use the term "queer" and lecture gay men and lesbians on all "the problems with mainstream queer culture."

by Anonymousreply 112June 13, 2021 9:20 AM

Oh god, R112, sounds like you are way better off away from that. I cannot bear people like her who think it's ok to lecture gay men and lesbians on our community. Ugh. I knew someone a little bit like that, who would tell me I 'had to understand' where countries that killed gay people were coming from, you know, a kind of cultural relativism.

by Anonymousreply 113June 13, 2021 10:01 AM

She hates white women solely because they look better belly-dancing than she does, I'm sure. She's white herself, of course, but seems to think she's an exception. This article is full of bad faith arguments, but when called out on them, she just resorted to calling people names. Supported by her ol' pal Roxane Gay who referred to people with actual facts as a 'white belly dancing mafia'.

by Anonymousreply 117June 13, 2021 10:10 AM

The sad truth is that this type of body is all too common in America and she isn't even addressing that major social issue. Yesterday, I went clothes shopping with my roommate who went from a size 6 to a size 10 and not even fast fashion hellholes like Zara or H&M carry size 8. We looked it up and the average size of American women is size 16-18! Why isn't this woman addressing THAT major social issue? How our food is laden with hormones and how unhealthy that can be? She needs to be addressing American issues not Palestinian issues (cuz only in America would she get away with that).

by Anonymousreply 118June 13, 2021 10:13 AM

I think she's one of those 'talking about healthy eating is fatphobic' types of people, R118.

by Anonymousreply 119June 13, 2021 10:15 AM

R114 belly-dancing could only help her become fitter and lose some weight, the way it has for thousands of women of all creeds and colour.

Due to concern about a couple of concerning extra inches on my waist & belly, I have recently started to learn (as a white Jezebel!), and it’s definitely doing me (and my future partner) good. I will likely never do it in public, because I’m not an exhibitionist narcissist nor am I a skilled natural enough dancer to do it justice, but I will practise privately if I want to and no random Middle Eastern lady is going to forbid it.

It’s called cultural exchange, not appropriation. If she wants to learn Morris or English/Irish line-dancing, I wouldn’t have a problem with that and I don’t have a right to order her not to.

by Anonymousreply 120June 13, 2021 10:18 AM

She seems to be a bit of a dangerous person too, though I obviously don't know the full ins and outs of this story, so will be careful not to say anyone is lying, but...

She has a real problem with the author Colum McCann, who apparently she had an affair with at one time (while he was married maybe?). Anyway, he may be a real piece of work, I don't know. But he recently got a lot of acclaim for his novel Apeirogon: nominated for awards, a potential movie being made of it, etc. This book is about the Israel-Palestine thing. She is very upset, because her books about her Palestinian self are not getting as much attention, and he isn't Palestinian (or Israeli) so it's "cultural appropriation".

Then, she started spreading a story around that he sexually assaulted her. And people took it up and started commenting on Twitter about it, under mentions of him. His book never did get through to the finals of whatever prize he was nominated for after this, but that may have been coincidence.

Her proof that he sexually assaulted her was an article she wrote about it that she told everyone to read, as all the facts where in there.

According to her own words, the facts were that they were in a BDSM relationship. One night he said to her: "what can I do to you?" and she answered: "anything". So he started doing things to her and she really enjoyed it. Then, at one point, she stopped liking it and wanted him to stop, but didn't say anything because she didn't know how to. Finally, she told him to stop and he "immediately stopped".

This... and believe me, I'm not into defending guys who assault women at all, but this seems to me a much greyer issue, and perhaps more bad communication than anything, especially if he immediately stopped when she communicated that to him. I just don't think this would stand up in court. Roxane Gay says that it absolutely happened because she was there afterwards when Jarrar rung her, for what it's worth.

But I dunno, this woman just seems really... off.

by Anonymousreply 121June 13, 2021 10:22 AM

Good on you, R120! Also, she's an idiot, because the roots of belly-dancing predate the Arab conquest of Egypt, so she has no more right to it than anyone else, plus it's a tradition in many non-Arab countries, and modern belly-dancing takes a lot from 19th century vaudeville too. It's actually a beautiful mish-mash of things, the way cultures are meant to work.

In that article she goes on about how this famous woman Fifi Abdou is the correct type of belly-dancer, but Ms Abdou is well known for PRAISING western women taking up belly dancing, haha!

i would love for any Palestinian queer american to try any of this shit in Gaza or West Bank and see how they are treated….

like they have this “idea” of Palestine but have no clue how it actually is. You can be excommunicated and killed for gayness and nudity. In fact many Palestinian gays secretly escape to Israel and they are fine there

also i wish Americans would go hard for Kurds being tortured throughout the Arab world but Hamas and the PA are Pan Arab Colonists and truthfully hate minorities not just Jews. Imagine if Americans knew anything about Kurdish justice but that would break their fantasy of the poooorrr down trotted Palestinian who is just an Arab colonist pitted against Jews……..

also this fat person is white and white passing and if i saw her in Kurdistan i would think “why is this fat white woman here being crazy”

I can't believe this thread got to over 100 posts and no one has mentioned that the obese photographer, Laura Aguilar, this kook is "honoring" with her sad video died in 2018 at 58 y/o FROM DIABETES---a totally preventable disease that can be reversed with proper diet (very low carb), exercise and maintaining a healthy weight.
“She died in peace having spent her last day with many loving visitors,” said Sybil Venegas, an independent curator and friend who helped manage the artist’s affairs toward the end of her life. Aguilar had long contended with diabetes and was suffering from end-stage renal failure at the time of her death.

Why is your roommate telling your coworkers what to eat, r23? That's weird.

by Anonymousreply 131June 13, 2021 11:01 AM

Sorry, R131 was meant for R123, not r23.

by Anonymousreply 132June 13, 2021 11:01 AM

R131 - she wasn't telling them what to eat. They wanted to have a virtual pizza party from this Italian restaurant and, when everyone messaged the team lead on what to order, she said said she wanted the burrata and veal salad. When our PR girl innocently said "you seriously don't want the pizza?" (because the two of them like trying new restaurants and talked about how good the pizza at this place was) my roommate said "I need to cut out carbs as much as I can with my pandemic weight gain and trigliceride issues". This on our WhatsApp group. Ms. SJW immediately fired at her that "talking about weight is triggering for many who may be struggling with eating disorders". My roommate fired back "well, as I said, I am struggling with my own issues and the doctor told me less sugars, so I am going with the salad...no dressing!". Immediately got reported to HR.

Jarrar will tell anyone who will listen about how she tried to go to Palestine years ago, but the Israelis refused to admit her and tortured her for awhile at the airport, before sending her back to the US.

She admits, however, that she lied about why she was entering the country, making them immediately suspicious, and lied about where she was going and who she was staying with, and she also knew she was going in the wrong way (she could've entered through Jordan, but deliberately chose to come in through Ben Gurion, where is clearly states she couldn't enter due to having Palestinian ID).

When I read that, I realized that she is one of those people who purposely makes things go wrong in her life so that she can complain about them and be the victim. There are certainly valid points to be made about the treatment of Palestinians - unfortunately, she is much more concerned with using them to get attention on herself, than to actually help in any way.

R126, I have some Kurdish friends - the things those people have had to deal with is terrible, and to have fought so hard and established control over a decent chunk of land, to be continuously let down by Western powers who promise to help and then leave them in the lurch, well, it's heartbreaking.

Type 1 diabetes is a disease of the pancreas and usually cannot be reversed. Type 2 is preventable but that is not always as easy or simple as you state. It doesn't only affect fat, sedentary people, by the way.

R51 - actually, I think it would have been more of an 'art statement' if she was on the beach, people came up with buckets of water and then a team of them pushed her back into the water.

I think that would have been a more provocative and thought-provoking statement, as blatant as it may be. Many fat people have that 'beached whale' metaphor in their heads when they go to the beach. And it could be a commentary on how those bodies don't belong on the beach and need to be rolled back into the abyss of the water and out of sight.

Of course, people would have said it was dehumanizing - which would have been the point.

by Anonymousreply 159June 13, 2021 2:18 PM

R148, the dead woman wasn't Type 1. T1D's are all skinny. They can't put on weight.

The artist (and I guarantee Randa Jarrar as well) was T2D....and yes, it absolutely IS always reversible for anyone motivated to radically change their relationship with food. You have to eat right (keto) and exercise. I did it myself. I'm down 45 lbs and my A1C dropped from an alarming 12.1 down to 5.8 in 6 months. All my health markers are now in the normal range. I feel amazing too. Everything is better-- sleep, energy, moods, mental focus, flexibility, joints, hair, skin, nails.....on and on. I feel better than I have since I was a teenager.

[R143] that’s why you will find many Kurds with sympathy to Israel because if the Western world woke up and saw what’s happening to Kurds millions of us-they would have to admit that Hamas and PA work for Iran and Iran is funding and supporting the terror of our people across the world. All Hamas is a tool for all Justice for Palestine is a tool for is a return to the Caliphate pan arab continent. It is not a dream for anyone but western delusionals and hard core Islamists. Kurds, Yassidis, Armenians, Druze, and yes Israelis will suffer more under a “free palestine”. Turkey invaded and kill people in Turkish villages.

Also where is the outrage for Egypt who unlike Israel shoots any Gazan on site for trying to illegally pass the border-yep Egypt hates Hamas led Gaza. Until the world wakes up to the horrors of Iran and keeps getting distracted by fake hate for Israel-the rest of minorities in the middle east continue to suffer without attention

Also very nice of Arab countries colluding with China and letting their Uyghur citizens be kidnapped back to china to be put in concentration camps

like ok….no offense the West is stupid and wrong and this little fat WHItE right privileged palestinian whining about how she misses pan arab colonization and rule under islamic calaphate is anything but laughable and misinformed by high fives in her champagne lgbt circles-so righteous. Woman have been under the male gaze since the beginning of time. Nudie pictures, stag films, calendars, mud flaps, novelty glasses, Playboy, Hustler—created by men. Looking at nude women is acceptable because men have made it acceptable.

by Anonymousreply 168June 13, 2021 11:11 PM

She STILL can't stand white belly dancers! LOL, her sad attempt at being above it all: "I just wrote the article in two hours and YOU are all obsessed with me!" type stuff, uh, no. You clearly wrote it quickly and that's the problem. Then she goes through all the criticisms, except she doesn't touch on any of the real, fact-based criticisms of course, because she has no answer for that.

How does someone like this have tenure as a professor who teaches writing when she can't even make a simple argument work?

by Anonymousreply 171June 13, 2021 11:15 PM

Isn't there something productive she can do with all this anger of hers? Doesn't she write? I guess not enough to get this anger out of her.

She has recently written a road trip memoir, except there's no road trip in it, and when people said they had picked it up expecting a road trip because that was how it was advertised, she went on and on about how she was 'deconstructing' the 'colonialist' idea of a road trip or something. Woman is nuts.

From what I know, outside living the majority of her life in the US, she grew up in Egypt and Kuwait. It sounds like she is really romanticizing something, without having a real understanding of what things are like on the ground.

To be honest, her focus on Palestine seems much more about her than them, kinda like how her video above is more about herself than the artist she is supposedly honoring.

I wonder what it'd be like to take her creative writing class? I feel like she'd be quite vindictive if you didn't write in the exact way she wanted you to.

by Anonymousreply 175June 13, 2021 11:34 PM
I was with her until "a culture that wants smaller women is pedophilic"

That is a really old fashioned take, the kind of thing you see in academic talk from decades ago. For a while the hot take on the fashion world was that men liked Twiggy and other stick thin models because they were hot for little girls, then it changed to the idea that gay men wanted women so thin that they looked like boys. Both tropes are considered outdated and offensive these days.

This woman really is a walking parody, if she suddenly announced she'd been trolling people all along, I would completely believe it.

by Anonymousreply 218June 26, 2021 1:26 PM

That's a great point R218 - kinda hilarious how intelligent she thinks she is, and doesn't realise what a parody she is instead.

The only thing is, I think for her to be trolling/doing performance art she'd have to have a sense of humour though, and quite frankly she seemly utterly humourless.

by Anonymousreply 219June 26, 2021 1:45 PM

Mona Eltahawy has just hosted a panel of MENA LGBTQIA authors, including Ms Jarrar, who Eltahawy calls "gorgeously visible" and around the 20 minute mark she starts lavishing praise on Jarrar for the Laura Aguilar video above, calling it an "incredible video" and is [italic]outraged[/italic] ("for fuck's sake!", "fascist fucks of Instagram!") that Instagram took it down, censoring it "during Pride!".

Jarrar thinks "it's an honor to be censored by Instagram" which she calls a "trashcan". She shows us what a brave trailblazer she is as she proudly declares: "Fuck Instagram! Fuck Facebook! Fuck Israel! Fuck Saudi Arabia!"

Her explanation of doing this video is that her "quest" is always to remain vulnerable and angry and naked. She looks so pleased with herself as she says these things.

On the recent Madonna Vogue Italia thread, a poster said this about her, and I think something similar is happening here with Jarrar (bolding mine):
She’s become Lena Dunham, with that insistence to make herself look as terrible as possible, in the worst clothes and then shove herself into our faces, [bold]daring us to be appalled[/bold]. It’s a desperate kind of theater. Any attention, even contempt, is better than none.

R224 welll….she could do that in Arab Israeli cities like Jaffa but hell as not in West Bank or Gaza. Arab Israelis don’t want Hamas or the PA to take over-sex, weed, shorts, and gay shit are for keeeping thanks. What she wants is to be an Arab Israeli citizen - unless she wants to be covered and shrouded and have a man walk her home. Yep in Gaza the queer liberation movement known as Hamas passed a law that single women MUST be accompanied by a man ANYWHERE.

Ramallah is beautiful West Bank city-but you still can’t be gay not that it matters because people shout Pinkwashing. Ok then all of Europe, South Korea, Thailand, the UK, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, and the US are also Pinkwashing because yeah imperialism but also we don’t get murdered for being gay so uhhhh yeah I’m fine with it. You don’t like it- go live in Iran and Iraq and West Bank.

by Anonymousreply 225June 30, 2021 1:17 AM

There's a guy who goes around Israel and Palestine doing interviews, and there was one where he asked them about their opinions on gay people. The Palestinians were almost unanimously against gay people, and when they heard there were gay people who supported Palestine, they basically said: "Well, of course they do, it's the right thing to do, but we don't need THEIR support".

Interesting, half the guys that said it looked like they'd probably enjoy sucking dick.

But it wasn't all like that. There was one lovely woman who spoke about the gay people she knew in Palestine, her support for them and gay people everywhere and how things need to change. She was open about it and actually did do as much as she could to fight for gay rights. It was a very interesting video.

With Jarrar's tweet above, it's a beautiful dream to have, but it's not all because of Israeli policy that she can't do that, as she seems to be implying when you see all her tweets in context. She wouldn't be allowed to do that due to the Palestinians either.

To mark the last few weeks of our exhibition, “Laura Aguilar: Show and Tell” (on view through June 26th) we commissioned artists Randa Jarrar, Raquel Gutiérrez, and Amelia Bande (3 Angeleno artists) to choose any work(s) from the exhibition and create a new short work in response. These videos will be unrolled this month, beginning with Jarrar's response to “Nature Self Portrait 6”, “Three Eagles Flying”, and “In Sandy's Room”, directed by Violet Price.

On June 22nd at 7pm, all three artists will be in conversation with Ethnic Studies and Critical Gender Studies scholar, Roy Pérez as part of "Aguilar's LA: Three Love Letters". RSVP: zoom.us/meeting/register/tJwscuyqrz8uG9BMAXETsQ0EZ3FiVoGN8MZ3

Randa Jarrar is the author of the memoir Love Is An Ex-Country, the novel A Map of Home, and the collection Him, Me, Muhammad Ali. She is also a performer. Her essays have appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Bitch, Buzzfeed, and elsewhere. She is a recipient of a Creative Capital Award and an American Book Award.

Laughing at this delusional bitch trying to pretend that Palestine is some sort of liberal paradise for "queer" people. For all her shrieking about "apartheid in Israel" and "Islamophobia" I bet she doesn't utter a word about how Islamic countries treat their non-Muslim residents and citizens.

by Anonymousreply 255July 6, 2021 6:09 AM

I can't bear looking at the weals on those flabby cheeks.

by Anonymousreply 256July 6, 2021 6:13 AM

R255, she seems to be either very naïve or deliberately obtuse when it comes to that subject. Supporting the rights of Palestinians is one thing, claiming it's, as you say, a liberal paradise for queer people is quite another.

She complains all the time about her experience at Ben Gurion airport when she tried to go to Palestine, but she deliberately did the wrong thing in order to end up feeling like the victim. She knew that she would have to go through Jordan, considering her heritage, but deliberately ignored that and then wondered why she got treated so badly at the airport when the Israelis found out she was lying about her background, who she was staying with, and when she threatened to piss on the floor.

I can't with these people. In their obsession for making themselves the victim, they end up fucking things up for real victims.

by Anonymousreply 257July 6, 2021 9:19 AM

R257, I don't think she is naïve at all. Deliberately obtuse and selectively outraged is more like it. She reminds me of many acquaintances who go on about how Muslims are persecuted in "the West", China, Israel, India and Myanmar. But any mention of how non-Muslims are treated in Islamic countries is immediately brushed away and rejected because, according to them, even the mention of this "comes from a feeling of Islamophobia."

It's hypocrisy and utter nonsense, but these types will just scream, "Israel! Myanmar! The evil West! India! China!" if you so much as mention anything about how intolerant Muslim majority societies are.

by Anonymousreply 258July 6, 2021 10:19 AM

R258, I think you're right when you say it's a case of "deliberately obtuse and selectively outraged". I was definitely being a bit too fair to her. When you see the stuff she writes, you can tell so easily how badly she wants to be offended over everything, and then have an excuse as she sees it, to tell everyone else off.

It surprises me not that she is such good friends with Roxane Gay.

by Anonymousreply 264July 9, 2021 11:19 PM

Of course this hideous hypocritical cunt would immediately scream "Islamophobe! Israel" if anyone tweeted that they would happily celebrate the end of Palestine. Or any of the other awful hellholes in the Middle East.

by Anonymousreply 265July 10, 2021 6:13 AM

I'd watch a reality show of her living in Palestine.

by Anonymousreply 266July 10, 2021 6:16 AM

R266, it would be very interesting to see the realisation grow on her that no place in the world is ideal, especially over there. But probably she will just scream: "Israel is evil!" at all her problems.

PS, I feel I have to say, I definitely don't support or not support either side in this issue, but I just want to say that I think she's being way too simple minded about the whole situation in some cases.

She definitely would R265. And not even accept that it was hypocritical either.

by Anonymousreply 267July 10, 2021 6:32 AM

I wonder what she would find most problematic about living in Palestine: the lack of fast food, the slow internet, or having to wear a Burqa?

by Anonymousreply 268July 10, 2021 7:02 AM

None of those, R268. She would complain constantly about the existence of Israel and blame "the West" for anything that she doesn't like about life in Palestine.

by Anonymousreply 269July 10, 2021 7:38 AM

R269 has it exactly right. You can totally see that. Would be interesting to see how she could spin not being able to roll around in the desert naked and wrapped in bondage rope as being the fault of Israel and the West, but I'm sure she'll give it a damn good try!

by Anonymousreply 285July 17, 2021 10:14 PM

R283, that's one of the ironies of body positivity--all those huge models still have to have curves, i.e., significant waist-to-hip ratios; the celebs famed for having fat asses have had procedures to get the round-ass look. Maybe Jennifer Lopez' is real, but we never see her bare ass because it's probably full of cellulite.

by Anonymousreply 286July 18, 2021 7:15 AM

People like Random make me laugh. I have had the opportunity to live in many different countries over the last 20 years. I know from my own experiences that they can get away with bitching about America and "the West" precisely because of the generally liberal values of the West. The cultures that so many of these types love to romanticize are more often than not much more rigid, conservative and far more racist, classist and cruel. But Random and her ilk will never acknowledge that.

by Anonymousreply 287July 18, 2021 7:35 AM

Those are the shades of grey that people like her never like to acknowledge, R287. And you'd think a university professor would be more aware of this, but instead she just blindly glorifies places other than where she lives. It's almost as if her criticism of the place she is in stops her criticism of the places she dreams about.

I will admit, I've only travelled to certain places in the Middle East, and I don't want to be too general because I freely admit I don't know enough, but during my limited time there it was amazing how a sense of censorship seemed to hang in the air. I didn't go there thinking it would be like that, but by the time I left, I was really aware of it.

There was also a real beauty in the relationships I formed with people there, a sense of community and welcome-ness unlike I had experienced in other places. But I certainly wouldn't be marching in a Pride parade in most places over there like she seems to think she will be able to do in Palestine.

by Anonymousreply 288July 18, 2021 8:44 AM
And you'd think a university professor would be more aware of this, but instead she just blindly glorifies places other than where she lives.

I know some people in academic or journalistic circles who are like RJ. It isn't so much a case of criticizing where they live but more that they have a pre-defined narrative in mind. And they look for viewpoints and opinions to suit that narrative.

One such academic acquaintance is very much in the "West bad and evil and imperialistic, Muslims are misunderstood, What about America/Israel/Myanmar/India?" mold. When she travels around the world her reactions are so predictable. Any visit to Europe will result in her constantly bringing up racism in those countries, how Islamophobic France and the UK are, how homophobic Eastern Europe is and so on. She returned from a work trip to India two years ago and talked non-stop about every Muslim there being oppressed beyond belief and on the verge of being lynched and killed. The same with trips to Japan or Hong Kong or Argentina.

And the same woman, after trips to Iran, Saudi Arabia and Tunisia would only talk about the glorious architecture, how much the Middle East has contributed to modern culture and how misunderstood the region (minus Israel, of course) is. There is no attempt whatsoever to be objective. Her agenda are plain for everyone to see. When you bring up the treatment of religious minorities or gays in those countries she would get huffy, dismissive and start lecturing about the imperialist tendency to impose our cultural beliefs on "other cultures far richer than ours." (her exact words)

The old cliche about none so blind as those who won't see is true in her case.

by Anonymousreply 289July 18, 2021 10:23 AM

Wow R289, thanks for sharing that, it is very interesting, and I know people like that too. Especially:
When you bring up the treatment of religious minorities or gays in those countries she would get huffy, dismissive and start lecturing about the imperialist tendency to impose our cultural beliefs on "other cultures far richer than ours."

I honestly don't understand these poseur supposedly liberal 'academics', especially those who seem to so vehemently hate the US, yet live in the US and earn quite a decent living in the US. These types continue to reap the benefits of living in the US, yet are always saying negative things about the US.

Would she be able to have such a loudmouth in her country, would she have the freedom to pose naked, exposing her disgusting vile body? She'd be stoned to death, she'd be considered a second class citizen there. Back in her patriarchal country, she'd probably be murdered. Women have been murdered for much less in the countries she champions.

by Anonymousreply 292July 18, 2021 11:38 PM

^ Deep down I'm sure she must know that it wouldn't be paradise for her in Palestine. The cognitive dissonance must be part of what makes her so irritable. But conveniently for her, she never has to own up to that if she just stays in the US complaining all the time, I guess.

I can't find it now, but I remember her not that long ago posting a tweet about how she had just "squirted in the shape of a heart". I think she even shared a picture of it, but I am too traumatised to remember.

R302, there is certainly something of the Ursula about her isn't there?

R300, this is the thing - I get the feeling she's not really trans either, but I obviously don't know that for sure. If she is doing it just as a narcissist thing, that's really very insulting.

by Anonymousreply 307July 22, 2021 12:00 PM

I doubt this ever happens...
Every time I drive my car (a convertible) alone, a man makes sure to stop nearby to tell me how sexy I am. I always respond with, "I know." Stop mansplaining my hotness to me, LA creeps.

Yeah right. Nobody is telling her that

by Anonymousreply 309July 22, 2021 2:32 PM

She lives in such a strange, little world of her own making...

by Anonymousreply 310July 22, 2021 8:27 PM

She is hard of hearing and delusional. They are telling her she looks hot and sweaty, not hot and sexy. They are acting out of concern that this blubbery whale might overheat and explode.

by Anonymousreply 311July 23, 2021 8:30 AM

R300, I have an inkling you are right. For years she was describing herself as "queer" but only seemed to be into men... this whole thing comes off like she wants MORE attention. I wouldn't say that about anyone else, but with her..? I think she's nuts and so desperate for everyone to be looking at her.

by Anonymousreply 312July 23, 2021 9:14 PM

Stop mansplaining to me, LA creeps!

by Anonymousreply 313July 24, 2021 8:12 PM

She's so delusional, haha!

by Anonymousreply 314July 25, 2021 12:10 PM

If I were trans I'd be so pissed off that this woman is just glomming on to the community for attention and saying her pronouns are basically everything under the sun. She's sick in the head. Typical of people who were brought up in privilege, she's desperate to have something to feel victimised about.

by Anonymousreply 315July 31, 2021 1:26 AM

Hmmm... I'm not sure graphic design is her career path...

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 316August 7, 2021 10:14 PM

R315, I always used to assume that the trans would be pissed off with these kinds of people but they actually like it. The more people adopting and promoting their gender identity ideology, the better for them. The trans have no problem with full-blown lineback-style men who have undergone no physical transitioning "identifying" as women.

Of course, people with actual gender dysphoria may have an issue with this stuff, but they don't exist in the minds of the new-style trans activists and, if they do, then they should just shut up.

by Anonymousreply 317August 8, 2021 8:01 AM

To add r315, that's why the trans love the whole pronouns thing and are pushing organisations to adopt pronouns in emails for all their members as well as on social media, even if the majority will be "cis" because it promotes the concept of gender identity ideology.

by Anonymousreply 318August 8, 2021 8:02 AM

What on earth does this mean? "I am a Palestinian flag"??
no you are because you have a Palestinian flag in your profile pic and meanwhile I am a Palestinian Fag and I don't want your support

I think she might be in the midst of a psychotic break right now. She's just gone mad on Twitter, insulting everyone she can.

She's such a hypocrite, surprise, surprise. For someone so up in arms about white women belly dancing, she has no problem with her family celebrating Christmas.

And for the record, I believe she should be able to celebrate Christmas AND white women should be able to belly dance. It's just the fact she's a huge hypocrite with the whole 'cultural appropriation' thing.

Shouldn’t she be driving down the highway getting told she’s sexy (allegedly)

by Anonymousreply 325August 14, 2021 4:45 AM
What on earth does this mean? "I am a Palestinian flag"??

She wrote "I am a Palestinian f*g". Typical of a straight woman claiming to be 'queer', she thinks it's OK for her to use the f-word slur to refer to herself.

I hope she posts something stupid like "Palestinians are the n-word of the Middle East, oppressed by everyone. I am a n-word." and gets canceled immediately.

by Anonymousreply 326August 14, 2021 7:15 AM
She wrote "I am a Palestinian f*g"

Oh wow, I seriously couldn't see that until you pointed it out. That really annoys me, she doesn't have any reason (in my opinion, at the same time I'm not trying to stop her) to use that term to describe herself. There are other terms available to her. I guess what I'm trying to say is that she tries so hard to police what others can and can't do, but her rules never seem to apply to her. And that second paragraph R326, I wouldn't put it past her.

She just seems so unlikable.

It does crack me up that it feels like earlier today she was just running around on Twitter trying to be offensive and to take offense to as many people as possible. And yet no one really responds to her, that must grate on her so much, desperate for attention as she is!

R325, while she yells out: "stop mansplaining my hotness to me!"

by Anonymousreply 327August 14, 2021 8:20 AM

She really doesn't hold to her own so-called values. Or maybe she does, I think her values might just be: "I hate white people" haha:

There's a lotta junk in that trunk.

by Anonymousreply 332August 15, 2021 12:44 AM

And none of it very appealing, R332.

by Anonymousreply 333August 15, 2021 1:21 AM

People like her only exist in academia right? I can’t imagine this woman having a real job with responsibilities, where she’s forced to deal with real-life diversity.

by Anonymousreply 334August 15, 2021 2:18 PM

I think they must, R334. In their domain they can be king (she has tenure as a creative writing professor), I can't believe they would be very successful outside of it.

Nothing I've seen of this woman ever makes me think she is getting ahead on her own merits. She seems to be trying to get success by claiming oppression and bullying people into loving her work (or else they're bigoted). And yet, she's not even very successful at THAT! Haha.

by Anonymousreply 335August 15, 2021 9:09 PM

She's calling herself "BeefyBaba" now. So many identities, she might as well just call herself Sybil!

Oh, god. She is ALWAYS the victim! It's interesting she posts this:
I watched The Chair. And yeah, it's too real in parts. But I also deeply disliked the way they explored campus controversy. There is ONE nazi student acknowledging the disgraced prof, but not a huge group of them protecting him, which is what is actually happening on campuses 1/3
A major lost opportunity. Seeing the students of color go off on the republican/nazi students would have been so much more interesting and realistic. Instead it's v obvious that the production team decided to lean into stereotypes about "overly woke" students (as iffffff) 2/3
In reality, the professors being attacked on campuses are those who are anti-Nazi, anti-fascism. I speak from experience. Speaking of: every fall I am reminded of the time I had to teach with nazis yelling outside my classroom, and administrators siding with them. (3/3)

This woman is such a weird "perpetual victim" type personality. She is literally on Twitter talking about her PTSD because, get this, the owner of the house she is renting decided to sell, gave her notice (and an offer to buy if she could), and then went about looking for buyers. Apparently this evil home owner is re-traumatising her and giving her PTSD because she's Palestinian, and this brings up memories of Palestinian displacement? Despite the fact she grew up in the US, Kuwait and Egypt?

She also sometimes identifies as a gay man or a "fag". This is ridiculous.
