Which Gay Actor(s) Do You Think Comes Across as Straight?

Are there any? If so, they're in short supply.

by Anonymousreply 108December 25, 2021 12:06 AM

None.

by Anonymousreply 1June 11, 2021 5:32 PM

Matt Bomer

by Anonymousreply 2June 11, 2021 5:32 PM

Paul Lynde

by Anonymousreply 3June 11, 2021 5:39 PM

I was shocked to learn Matthew Getz is gay! (hahahahaha)

by Anonymousreply 4June 11, 2021 5:40 PM

Rock Hudson -- though seeing "Pillow Talk" now with him pretending to be gay has added layers.

by Anonymousreply 5June 11, 2021 5:44 PM

I noticed gays tend to be the ones who most overthink about it. There still are people who have no idea Anderson Cooper and Don Lemon are gay, for God's sake.

by Anonymousreply 6June 11, 2021 5:45 PM

Raymond Burr & Spencer Tracy (but in hindsight, I see it now).

by Anonymousreply 7June 11, 2021 7:18 PM

Luke MacFarlane

by Anonymousreply 8June 11, 2021 7:22 PM

Richard Madden

by Anonymousreply 9June 11, 2021 7:22 PM

Greg Rikaart

by Anonymousreply 10June 11, 2021 7:38 PM

Wentworth Miller.

by Anonymousreply 11June 11, 2021 7:47 PM

Chris Pine and Chris Evans.

by Anonymousreply 12June 11, 2021 7:57 PM

Paul Iacono, Mark Indelicato, Chris Colfer.

Nearly all gay (closeted or not) actors are obvious to me, which make the few convincing ones the best actors…

Daniel Day Lewis comes across as gay to me every time I see him off screen, which is why he’s probably the greatest living actor today (ex: There Will Be Blood). I think Tom Hardy can sometimes be convincing (ex: The Revenant). Also, I’ve never seen Twilight, but Robert Pattinson has been in some great films lately and he’s definitely gay (ex: The Lighthouse).

by Anonymousreply 17June 11, 2021 8:12 PM

David Muir

by Anonymousreply 18June 11, 2021 8:25 PM

Evan Todd, although he’s not well known.

by Anonymousreply 19June 11, 2021 8:30 PM

Yes, definitely Evan Todd. I love him.

by Anonymousreply 20June 11, 2021 9:15 PM

Is this about general appearance and mannerisms or the moment they open their mouths and speak?

by Anonymousreply 21June 11, 2021 10:17 PM

Connor Jessup. His bf on the other hand.....

by Anonymousreply 22June 11, 2021 10:35 PM

James Scully (sometimes)

by Anonymousreply 23June 11, 2021 10:39 PM

Leslie Jordan

Truman Capote

Lindsey Graham

by Anonymousreply 24June 11, 2021 11:04 PM

I’ll mention two. The first is the late Terry Lester, best known as Jack Abbott on The Young and the Restless.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 25June 11, 2021 11:22 PM

The second is the late David Oliver. He did a number of roles, but has been dead 29 years so I doubt many of you know him.

I had no idea about Kevin Spacey, though his sexual appetites had apparently been common gossip here for a while. This place clocked his creepiness from like decades ago.

by Anonymousreply 27June 11, 2021 11:28 PM

That's cuz Spacey's a predator before just plain gay. The power-hungry part of him supersedes sexual orientation.

by Anonymousreply 28June 11, 2021 11:36 PM

Richard Chamberlain

George Clooney

Robert Reed

by Anonymousreply 29June 11, 2021 11:37 PM

Earl Holliman. I had NO idea he was gay, until that movie "Alexander: The Other Side Of Dawn".

Also, the guy who played Corporal Boyle on "Gomer Pyle" and the guy who played Bulldog on "Frasier".

by Anonymousreply 30June 12, 2021 1:04 AM

Alec Baldwin

by Anonymousreply 31June 12, 2021 1:08 AM

I'm sitting here debating with a friend about Chad Everett (Henry Wilson protege) and Lee Majors (Rock Hudson protege).

What say you DL?

by Anonymousreply 32June 12, 2021 1:13 AM

Robert Preston

Miles was completely unconvincing playing straight on 13 Reasons Why, but Brandon Flynn was fine.

by Anonymousreply 34June 12, 2021 1:19 AM

[quote]Miles was completely unconvincing playing straight on 13 Reasons Why

And on Parenthood. Why didn't they make Drew gay?

by Anonymousreply 35June 12, 2021 1:21 AM

I should add … Miles didn’t *end up* playing straight, but that’s because he came across so gay that they had to change the character.

by Anonymousreply 36June 12, 2021 1:22 AM

Frankie grande

by Anonymousreply 37June 12, 2021 2:21 AM

So pretty much you're asking if Tonka trucks fall out of their mouth when they speak?

by Anonymousreply 38June 12, 2021 3:54 AM

Peter Sarsgaard is a straight actor that comes across as gay.

by Anonymousreply 39June 12, 2021 3:57 AM

Dependssss on how they sssspeak

by Anonymousreply 40June 12, 2021 6:00 AM

Robert Preston was gay?

by Anonymousreply 41June 12, 2021 6:04 AM

Nathan Lane, David Hyde Pierce, Jesse Tyler Ferguson

by Anonymousreply 42June 12, 2021 6:57 AM

Connor Jessup and Brandon Flynn

by Anonymousreply 43June 12, 2021 7:42 AM

Bomer *used* to seem straight back in the 2000s [R2], but after coming out he's stopped butching it up and presents as a genteel Southern lady.

Dan Butler is someone no one would have guessed if he hadn't told us. Guillermo Diaz probably surprises people these days, though he was more obvious back around the turn of the millennium. Jeremy Sheffield just comes off as generic British.

by Anonymousreply 44June 12, 2021 8:51 AM

I assumed Victor Garber was straight when I first saw him in Light Sleeper and Sleepless in Seattle. In fact I was pleasantly surprised by his versatility in the two very different roles (and 3 if you count Godspell, which I didn’t see until even later, before knowing he was gay).

by Anonymousreply 45June 12, 2021 9:15 AM

[quote] "...which is why he’s probably the greatest living actor today (ex: There Will Be Blood)."

R17 I agree with you regarding Daniel Day Lewis seemingly very gay, but he so overracted that part, they might as well have cast Kevin Kline. He was AWFUL. I almost turned it off twice. I guess I truly am a masochist.

by Anonymousreply 46June 12, 2021 10:03 AM

In historical accounts, the kinds of men DDL plays in movies like There Will Be Blood and Gangs of New York were over the top, brash, boisterous, impossible to be around. His performances are probably very historically accurate, they just don't play well to modern audiences sometimes.

by Anonymousreply 47June 12, 2021 10:08 AM

Calling breeders "straight" implies there's something wrong with being gay.

by Anonymousreply 48June 12, 2021 10:12 AM

Connor plays straight very convincingly. His IG comment section is always full of angry and confused fans whenever he mentions being gay.

by Anonymousreply 49June 12, 2021 10:25 AM

Connor’s voice is different than before more like Miles.

by Anonymousreply 50June 12, 2021 10:50 AM

John Mahoney (dad on Frasier)

by Anonymousreply 51June 12, 2021 11:43 AM

I thought I was the only one who thought that, R17 (re DDL). He is completely different from any of his characters.

Re the topic: Lee Pace, Luke Evans...

by Anonymousreply 52June 12, 2021 12:35 PM

Mike Doyle can play straight though because he is an out gay man he often gets gay parts. Had he not come out at such an early age he would have had a bigger career. Didn't he get a Newsweek cover as a straight guy when he was a young adult?

by Anonymousreply 53June 12, 2021 1:29 PM

R73 Not everyone posting on DL is American. Thure Lindhardt has done a bunch of international work, not near Mads Mikkelsen-level of recognition but he's very talented. He's been in The Borgias, The Last Kingdom, Angels & Demons, The Bridge, and Ira Sachs' fantastic film Keep the Lights On:

Robert Reed…except for that time Alice clocked him on her gaydar when he was eating a banana. ‘Yep, family’.

by Anonymousreply 93December 23, 2021 11:55 AM

Thirding Luke Evans. I was surprised to find out he’s gay—his vibe is very ‘down-to-Earth, stoical and pensive middleclass hetero’ man. He doesn’t stand out in any way like many gay men do. Almost too boring and nondescript? Idk maybe that’s too harsh and stereotypical.

R17 yes, I too go back and forth on Tom Hardy. Sometimes he seems butch-camper than camp, other times if you squint or look sideways he could pass as a straight.

by Anonymousreply 94December 23, 2021 12:12 PM

Daniel J Travanti, hot and manly on Hill St Blues. John Mahoney was a surprise. In moonstruck with the younger women...believeable to me.

by Anonymousreply 95December 23, 2021 12:29 PM

Oh, and Jeremy Renner and Tom Hardy, although have not an them in much.

I second Daniel J. Travanti. Didn't they try to push a story that he and Veronica Hamel were a couple offscreen? I guess I believed it because I didn't pick up on anything with him at the time.

by Anonymousreply 100December 23, 2021 2:46 PM

Guillermo Diaz could pass pretty easily these days if he weren't open about being gay.

Meredith Baxter reads as completely straight to me. Her coming out was the one that really dropped my jaw.

by Anonymousreply 101December 24, 2021 9:13 PM

80%of the actors named on here pass as straight BECAUSE THEY FUCKING ARE.

by Anonymousreply 102December 24, 2021 9:19 PM

R101, I agree about Baxter. I was equally shocked when Niecy Nash married another woman. Did not see that one coming at all.

by Anonymousreply 103December 24, 2021 9:21 PM

There are no gay actors, don’t you listen to the local frauen? Only he-men in the movies, doncha know.

Actor/comedian Nik Dodani

Actor/comedian Tim Dillon

Its funny, Tuc Watkins is a guy I wouldn't have (and didn't) know he was gay at all, yet when I found out, I was all "Yep, I see it now".

by Anonymousreply 107December 24, 2021 11:02 PM

R98, true, but I had never seen jeremy Renner offscreen. The movie, some wilderness outdoorsy role, sorry I don’t remember The name ,he seemed very straight to me. He was kind of sexy in it too.
