Rock Hudson -- though seeing "Pillow Talk" now with him pretending to be gay has added layers.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | June 11, 2021 5:44 PM |
I noticed gays tend to be the ones who most overthink about it. There still are people who have no idea Anderson Cooper and Don Lemon are gay, for God's sake.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | June 11, 2021 5:45 PM |
Raymond Burr & Spencer Tracy (but in hindsight, I see it now).

Nearly all gay (closeted or not) actors are obvious to me, which make the few convincing ones the best actors…
Daniel Day Lewis comes across as gay to me every time I see him off screen, which is why he’s probably the greatest living actor today (ex: There Will Be Blood). I think Tom Hardy can sometimes be convincing (ex: The Revenant). Also, I’ve never seen Twilight, but Robert Pattinson has been in some great films lately and he’s definitely gay (ex: The Lighthouse).

David Muir
by Anonymous | reply 18 | June 11, 2021 8:25 PM |
Yes, definitely Evan Todd. I love him.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | June 11, 2021 9:15 PM |

Leslie Jordan
Truman Capote
Lindsey Graham
by Anonymous | reply 24 | June 11, 2021 11:04 PM |
I’ll mention two. The first is the late Terry Lester, best known as Jack Abbott on The Young and the Restless.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | June 11, 2021 11:22 PM |
The second is the late David Oliver. He did a number of roles, but has been dead 29 years so I doubt many of you know him.

I had no idea about Kevin Spacey, though his sexual appetites had apparently been common gossip here for a while. This place clocked his creepiness from like decades ago.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | June 11, 2021 11:28 PM |
That's cuz Spacey's a predator before just plain gay. The power-hungry part of him supersedes sexual orientation.

Richard Chamberlain
George Clooney
Robert Reed

Earl Holliman. I had NO idea he was gay, until that movie "Alexander: The Other Side Of Dawn".

And on Parenthood. Why didn't they make Drew gay?
by Anonymous | reply 35 | June 12, 2021 1:21 AM |
I should add … Miles didn’t *end up* playing straight, but that’s because he came across so gay that they had to change the character.

Peter Sarsgaard is a straight actor that comes across as gay.

Nathan Lane, David Hyde Pierce, Jesse Tyler Ferguson
by Anonymous | reply 42 | June 12, 2021 6:57 AM |
Bomer *used* to seem straight back in the 2000s [R2], but after coming out he's stopped butching it up and presents as a genteel Southern lady.
Dan Butler is someone no one would have guessed if he hadn't told us. Guillermo Diaz probably surprises people these days, though he was more obvious back around the turn of the millennium. Jeremy Sheffield just comes off as generic British.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | June 12, 2021 8:51 AM |
I assumed Victor Garber was straight when I first saw him in Light Sleeper and Sleepless in Seattle. In fact I was pleasantly surprised by his versatility in the two very different roles (and 3 if you count Godspell, which I didn’t see until even later, before knowing he was gay).

[quote] "...which is why he’s probably the greatest living actor today (ex: There Will Be Blood)."
R17 I agree with you regarding Daniel Day Lewis seemingly very gay, but he so overracted that part, they might as well have cast Kevin Kline. He was AWFUL. I almost turned it off twice. I guess I truly am a masochist.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | June 12, 2021 10:03 AM |
In historical accounts, the kinds of men DDL plays in movies like There Will Be Blood and Gangs of New York were over the top, brash, boisterous, impossible to be around. His performances are probably very historically accurate, they just don't play well to modern audiences sometimes.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | June 12, 2021 10:08 AM |
Calling breeders "straight" implies there's something wrong with being gay.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | June 12, 2021 10:12 AM |
Connor plays straight very convincingly. His IG comment section is always full of angry and confused fans whenever he mentions being gay.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | June 12, 2021 10:25 AM |
Connor’s voice is different than before more like Miles.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | June 12, 2021 10:50 AM |
John Mahoney (dad on Frasier)
by Anonymous | reply 51 | June 12, 2021 11:43 AM |
I thought I was the only one who thought that, R17 (re DDL). He is completely different from any of his characters.
Re the topic: Lee Pace, Luke Evans...
by Anonymous | reply 52 | June 12, 2021 12:35 PM |
Mike Doyle can play straight though because he is an out gay man he often gets gay parts. Had he not come out at such an early age he would have had a bigger career. Didn't he get a Newsweek cover as a straight guy when he was a young adult?

R73 Not everyone posting on DL is American. Thure Lindhardt has done a bunch of international work, not near Mads Mikkelsen-level of recognition but he's very talented. He's been in The Borgias, The Last Kingdom, Angels & Demons, The Bridge, and Ira Sachs' fantastic film Keep the Lights On:

R74 he also starred in Brotherhood (2009) where he played a gay neo-Nazi, it's a very compelling film and he's fantastic in it.

by Anonymous | reply 93 | December 23, 2021 11:55 AM |
Thirding Luke Evans. I was surprised to find out he’s gay—his vibe is very ‘down-to-Earth, stoical and pensive middleclass hetero’ man. He doesn’t stand out in any way like many gay men do. Almost too boring and nondescript? Idk maybe that’s too harsh and stereotypical.
R17 yes, I too go back and forth on Tom Hardy. Sometimes he seems butch-camper than camp, other times if you squint or look sideways he could pass as a straight.
by Anonymous | reply 94 | December 23, 2021 12:12 PM |
Daniel J Travanti, hot and manly on Hill St Blues. John Mahoney was a surprise. In moonstruck with the younger women...believeable to me.

I second Daniel J. Travanti. Didn't they try to push a story that he and Veronica Hamel were a couple offscreen? I guess I believed it because I didn't pick up on anything with him at the time.
