This is actually an interesting, non-cookie cutter list -- there are definitely some places I've never heard of before.

That's why I posted it--I figured it was less likely to be click-bait since it was coming from the Smithsonian. The only one on the list I've been to is Nevada City, CA. I've been there many times. It is a charming little town. An easy drive from Sacramento.

The picture in the link looks stunning

Thanks for that list! I've driven across the U.S. at least 4 times and the only one I may have visited (read: drove through) was Nevada City. These all look really interesting (except the Iowa one, i'll pass).

Bath, Maine is cool.

This is definitely an obscure list

I've been dogsledding with a kennel out of Ely, Minnesota. It was hands-down the greatest experience of my life. The sled I drove was the traditional wooden type, pulled by a team of two dogs.

Mushing is not for the faint-of-heart. You never, ever, ever let go of the sled, no matter what, even if you've crashed and are being dragged along. "Never lose your team!" is your mantra. I nearly overturned on a sharp curve at full speed but was able to hang on and shift my weight enough to righten the sled. It was INTENSE.
