Is there a bigger hack than David E Kelley?

His characters all range from obnoxious to repulsive. There is a pervasive smugness to all of his work that makes my skin crawl. He seems to write variations of the same story again and again. Lake Placid had me rooting for the lake monster. I was disappointed that it didn't eat any of the vile main characters.

Um. No. Obviously not. It's him. By far. Biggest hack.

by Anonymousreply 1June 10, 2021 12:27 AM

I liked his 90’s shows: Picket Fences, Chicago Hope, The Practice, and Ally McBeal.

by Anonymousreply 2June 10, 2021 12:31 AM

Well, yes...

He has to be be doing something right if he's married to this:

You know who is teetering with the title if he foists another POSE on us anytime soon.

He came into LA Law in its second year and was responsible for some of its best storylines.

Picket Fences was art. The Practice was provocative and interesting.

Ally McBeal was obnoxiously popular for a minute.

Haven't really cared about any of his productions since, but he wrote some of the best TV drama there was, for a while.

La Law , picket Fences. The man has uncanny insight

by Anonymousreply 7April 18, 2022 4:34 AM

Lake Placid was fun, but it wasn’t as fun as it thought it was.

by Anonymousreply 8April 18, 2022 4:36 AM

And Anatomy of A Scandal. I liked it.

by Anonymousreply 9April 18, 2022 4:37 AM

I’m 3/4 done with Anatomy of a Scandal & really like it. I also like Bog Sky & of course loved Big Little Lies. He’s not a hack!

by Anonymousreply 10April 18, 2022 4:39 AM

Always loathed him. In my country LA Law ran opposite Moonlighting, and people were sharply divided into the type that watched the Kelley show and the type that watched the Caron. I was team Maddie and Dave.

But then came Ally McBeal and all of the main female cast got anorexia. That is one bad guy.

Is Michelle anorexic ?

by Anonymousreply 12April 18, 2022 4:58 AM

She was for years, but seems to have given it up in late middle age.

by Anonymousreply 13April 18, 2022 5:07 AM

Picket Fences was great. The first 2-3 seasons of The Practice were great too. With his other stuff, your mileage may vary.

The Ally McBeak as feminist icon barely lasted into the year 2000.

I liked Boston Legal 😐

by Anonymousreply 16April 18, 2022 1:10 PM

Michelle has always looked better with more weight on and happier

by Anonymousreply 17April 18, 2022 2:17 PM

Boston Legal is probably my favorite show. I said in another thread that Alan Shore is my role model as an attorney.

by Anonymousreply 18April 18, 2022 3:50 PM

I just watched Anatomy of a Scandal and it was very entertaining. And Kelley wrote that one.

by Anonymousreply 19April 18, 2022 4:49 PM

R6 Maybe you've heard of a little show called Big Little Lies. He wrote that. He may be a "hack" but at least he's a hack who can attract top talent.

Kidman and Witherspoon hired him to adapt the novel, not the other way round.

by Anonymousreply 21April 19, 2022 1:26 AM

That said I liked The Practice, Boston Legal and Harry’s Law. The latter was particularly interesting in how straight Kathy Bates played it.

by Anonymousreply 22April 19, 2022 1:27 AM

R17 they usually do.

by Anonymousreply 23April 19, 2022 6:39 AM

Yes, Judd Apatow is a bigger hack. His ratio of good projects vs unwatchable is way worse than Kelley's.

by Anonymousreply 24April 19, 2022 7:01 AM

I would say his ratio is around 1 on 5 being good. Anatomy of a scandal is embarrassing in its obviousness.

by Anonymousreply 25April 19, 2022 7:04 AM

Yet, OP knows every one of his works. Clinical OCD, much?

by Anonymousreply 26April 19, 2022 7:58 AM

R25 I liked Anatomy of a Scandal. And now I think Rupert Friend should be James Bond.

by Anonymousreply 27April 19, 2022 10:04 PM

Loved Anatomy of A Scandal. Sienna Miller and Michelle Dockery were brilliant. I had no clue David E. Kelley had anything to do with it.

by Anonymousreply 28January 19, 2024 9:10 AM

Smell that shoe.

Don't you mean Aaron Sorkin?
