by Anonymous | reply 34 | June 9, 2021 7:20 PM |
Also, R29, the songs about being 16 were typically sung from the point of view of a high school boy falling in love with his girl. These were the romantic songs that folks back then danced to at their damn high school proms. It's annoying that some folks can't find that context, it's like they do a Google search for '16', and assume the worst.
Ringo (or the writer Bobby Sherman) wasn't saying that he himself wanted to bang a minor.

Lou Reed - I wanna be black
Check out the lyrics, song is complete with soul sisters singing the chorus
I wanna be black Have natural rhythm Shoot twenty feet of jism, too and fuck up Jews I wanna be black I wanna be a Panther Have a girlfriend named Samantha And have a stable of foxy whores Oh I wanna be black I don't wanna be a fucked up, middle class, college student anymore I just want to have a stable of foxy little whores Yeah, yeah I wanna be black
I wanna be black I wanna be like Martin Luther King and get myself shot in spring And lead a whole generation too And Fucked up the Jews
I wanna be black, I wanna be like Malcolm X and cast a hex over President Kennedy's tomb And have a big prick, too
I don't wanna be a fucked up, middle class, college student anymore

I have to keep looking up lyrics to some of the submissions here, and this one has zero trace of "problematic". It's the simplest song ever. He thinks a woman is pretty and wants to have a date with her. There are no lyrics to suggest he's touching her, or forcing her to do anything. by Anonymous | reply 91 | June 9, 2021 10:46 PM |
R88, can you explain this one.
Stevie is talking about going to her favorite vintage store on Haight Street, to shop there again like she did in the old times, when she was more wayward and unfocused, before she became a grownup successful artist making money. She's reminiscing about how she used to be supposedly free, and yet how she had to transform in order to love herself, and be truly free, unlike the memory, which is captured in time forever. It's a perfect and personal song, that many can relate to.
What on earth about that would someone try to cancel? The song is still played a lot on nostalgia radio.

Was just talking about this the other day
Not really a pop song, but the Rolling Stones "Some Girls" has the following lyric:
[italic] French girls they want Cartier, Italian girls want cars
American girls want everything in the world you can possibly imagine
English girls they're so prissy, I can't stand them on the telephone
Sometimes I take the receiver off the hook, I don't want them to ever call at all
White girls they're pretty funny, sometimes they drive me mad
Black girls just wanna get fucked all night, I just don't have that much jam
Chinese girls are so gentle, they're really such a tease
You never know quite what they're cookin', inside those silky sleeves [/italic]
Twitter would literally have a meltdown over all the "literal violence" in those lyrics.

I always thought that song at R106 was one of the stupidest dudebro try hard songs imaginable. I had a roommate who played this non stop and was a huge slut. Always talking about getting laid and being horny. He did hook up a lot but never got in relationships. He would also randomly walk up to girls in public and tell them they were beautiful and offer up the creepiest compliments. Then one month we got this crazy ass phone bill so I looked to see where all the charges were from. It was a weird ass 999 number or some shit like that so I dialed it and it turned out to be a chat line for bi curious guys. He had spent 55 minutes one time and another 36 mins a second time. I didn't want to bust him since I wasn't out myself then and he acted like he didn't know anything about it. Only two of us lived there and it wasn't me so... I always wondered what that was all about. Anyway it got longwinded but anytime I hear that song it reminds of that guy who was the worst douche dudebro before dudebros were a thing.
Every Breath You Take is just a bland love song. Sting tried to make it “edgy” by pretending it was about stalking his ex wife, except he dumped her for his thirsty neighbor! Clearly, he wasn’t interested in his first wife anymore.
All this information is totally inaccurate.
Sting actually said in an interview, he wrote the music as a romantic pop song, then specifically wrote the stalker lyrics to see if EBYT would be misinterpreted as a love song and it was! It’s hilarious when couples choose this for a song to be played at their weddings!
I remember Marilyn McCoo and the late Andy Gibb, then the hosts of ‘Solid Gold’, gazing into each others eyes while singing this song. Way too may thought EBYT was a love song. It’s about a stalker, end of story.
No, Sting didn’t write this for his ex-wife Irish actress Frances Tomelty. The ‘thirsty neighbor' you are referring to is Trudie Styler, his current wife. Trudie was actually best friends with Frances, this was before Trudie became their London neighbor.
Frances and Trudie were both in The Royal Shakespeare Company, where they met and became friends. At that point, Frances was already married to Sting. When they married Frances was a bit older than Sting and more established in her acting career, Sting was nowhere near famous when they married.
While hanging with Frances, Trudie set her eyes on Sting, she also saw dollar signs. At that point, Sting was already quite rich and famous when she starting pursuing him. Trudie, then went to the extent of getting an apartment near Sting and Frances' London apartment. Trudie basically stalked Sting.
Before becoming an actress, Trudie was an escort, her clients were mostly rich Mid-Eastern men. In interviews, she simply mentioned working at London 'gentlemen's club', that's not the truth. Trudie's background is rather sordid. She lies about most of it. Trudie grew up quite poor, in a home without an inside toilet. She also claims to have grown up in Italy, on a vineyard, she claims Italy is her home country, she's not Italian and she wasn't born there. Her father was a factory worker and a farmer, she was born and raised in Worcestershire.
This delusional woman must pinch herself everyday, she probably cannot believe her good fortune. Financially Trudie has faired much better than Frances, Sting didn't give Frances much in their divorce settlement. Isn't that always the case with the first wife, or partner, who stands by a partner with showbiz aspirations, they financially support them for years, they then get dumped for some airhead.

Cousin Dupree - Steely Dan
..Now I've come back home to plan my next move from the comfort of my Aunt Faye's couch
When I see my little cousin Janine walk in , all I could say was ow-ow-ouch
Honey how you've grown like a rose
Well we used to play when we were three - how about a kiss for your cousin Dupree
She turned my life into a living hell, in those little tops and tight capris
I pretended to be readin' the National Probe, as I was watchin' her wax her skis
On Saturday night she walked in with her date, and backs him up against the wall
I tumbled off the couch and heard myself sing, in a voice I never knew I had before...

R153 Well, no. I think he's referring to the music of today having the most obscene, offensive, scurrilous language imaginable. Whatever the opposite of "sanitized" that's the description of a lot of music today.... not to pick on rap and hip hop, but there are most obvious examples there.
"I let him hit it 'cause he slang cocaine / He toss my salad like his name Romaine."
A very mild example from Nicki Minaj

R156 that Emily Rataksojski or whatever her name has such a annoying expression. A decade on this video and her being nude in it remains her claim to fame but still gets her a story in the Daily Mail every day.
by Anonymous | reply 162 | June 10, 2021 7:10 PM |
R161, that's still approved language, though isn't it? We're talking about POP songs of the PAST that wouldn't pass the muster today.
The whole point of this thread is to underline how the old pop music had a lot of themes like incest, rape, dating minors, lusting after minors, abusing your wife, and generally showing male dominance. Songs about cocaine and drinking, and general sexuality existed back then and do today. That's not being canceled nor would it be today....as is evidenced by your post.
by Anonymous | reply 163 | June 10, 2021 7:16 PM |
R163 Songs about bitches and hoes and wet ass pussy (objectification of women! cancel!)
Songs about hitting women to let them know who's boss! (male dominance and abuse! cancel!)
Songs about fags (homophobia! cancel!)
And don't make me give you examples, these are pretty common elements
By the standards you are asserting, these examples have not been "sanitized" by any measure (the poster's point). These songs contain elements of "songs from the past" that posters are suggesting would be canceled today. Pretty simple point, really.

Funky Cold Medina by Tone Loc for a couple problematic verses alluding to putting things in womens' drinks so they'll consent to sex, and then a very transphobic passage of lyrics.
This brother told me a secret on how to get more chicks/Put a little Medina in your glass and the girls'll come real quick/It's better than any alcohol or aphrodisiac/A couple of sips of this love potion and she'll be on your lap
So, I took her to my crib and everything went well as planned/But when she got undressed, it was a big old mess, Sheena was a man/So, I threw him out, I don't fool around with no Oscar Meyer wiener/You must be sure that the girl is pure for the Funky Cold Medina/You know, ain't no plans with a man/This is the 80's and I'm down with the ladies/Break it down

R167, that is indeed a perfect example. It was just a funny novelty song in the 80s, but that was before school shootings was a thing.

China Girl is about heroin. This is one of my favorite tunes by Bowie. Another one gone too soon.
by Anonymous | reply 176 | June 10, 2021 11:25 PM |
R176, not quite.
Paul Trynka, the author of the David Bowie biography, Starman, explains the song [for Iggy Pop's 1977 album The Idiot] was inspired by Iggy Pop's infatuation with Kuelan Nguyen, a Vietnamese woman, as a metaphor for his Stooges career. It was written by Iggy, with collaboration from Bowie at the time.
When Nile Rodgers' was producing Bowie's 1983 remake, he offered an alternative explanation to Bowie; it's about speed balling coke and heroin. China (white) was the heroin, girl was the coke, and Bowie was down with the multiple salacious meanings in a pop song, so they went for it.

Always thought this was a great catchy song, but I never paid much attention to the lyrics, The Sir Douglas Quintet's "Mendocino".
Teeny bopper, my teenage lover
I caught your wave last night
It sent my mind a-wonderin'
You're such a groove, please don't move
Please stay in my love house by the river
Fast-talkin' guys with strange red eyes
Have put things in your head
And start your mind a-wonderin'
I love you so, please don't go
Please stay here with me in Mendocino
Mendocino, Mendocino
Where life's such a groove
You'll blow your mind in the mornin'
We used to walk through the park
Make love along the way in Mendocino
Like I told you, can you dig it?
If you wanna groove
I'll be glad to have you
Ah, 'cause I love you so, please don't go
Please stay here with me in Mendocino

I fucking LOVED this one when it started popping up on MTV. These ladies were having SO much fun with this very silly video, with their coordinated tribal dancing, plastic outfits, and singing about eating cannibals. WTF? Awesome.
I'm sure that would tick off a few woke boxes, if released today. LOL.

R159, I thought Cousin Dupree was clearly meant to be a joke about cousin lovin in the South.
It's Hey Nineteen from Steely Dan that would absolutely be cancelled today. You can interpret it as a song about a much older guy who ultimately uses alcohol and weed to get a 19-year-old girl to sleep with him. "The Cuervo gold, the fine Colombian, make tonight a wonderful thing."
by Anonymous | reply 182 | June 11, 2021 5:55 PM |
When Steely Dan plays that song in concert these days, they no longer sing the phrase, Hey Nineteen, but rather let the audience sing it

When this was initially released, it didn't get much flak in the UK but did receive some when played on US college/alt-rock radio stations especially in the South. Can only imagine would the reaction would be if it was released today, especially if heard by the "guns and bibles" crowd.
by Anonymous | reply 189 | June 12, 2021 3:09 AM |

Falco's "Jeanny." It was a big hit in much of Europe (as big as or even bigger than "Rock Me Amadeus"). It didn't chart in the US, although the video did get some airplay on MTV. It was controversial back then, but probably wouldn't even be released today.

Empress Aretha's "U Makes Me Feel Like A Natural Woman" was always problematic. Its pretty obvious that "Natural" is code for "Cis". This song goes out off it's way to exclude trans women and is transphobic as fuck.

Why would the Police song be canceled? It’s pretty bland: Student has crush on teacher, teacher and student bang, teacher gets fired. Not really controversial.
I’m sure these have been mentioned but I’m to lazy to check lol:
Turning Japanese by the Vapors Little Girls by Danny “I made Bridget Fonda fat” Elfman
The Elfman song is intended as a grotesque parody but Gen Z was on the whole not blessed with the powers of nuance.
