DLers: What's the latest you can drink a cup of coffee and not have it affect your sleep?
I usually have a double espresso early in the AM, before 7, and if I need caffeine after, I'll have green tea, but never after noon if I want to sleep that night.
But there are plenty of people who will have coffee after dinner and it won't affect their sleep.
Where do you fit it?

Sorry, I fucked that up totally and hit "Return" by accident before I put in enough responses.
I wish we had an edit or delete function.
Mea culpa

I can drink espresso — maybe not six of them, but one or two easily — just before bed and sleep with no problem, but caffeine has little effect on me and I can sleep at will anywhere in most any situation.

Coffee never produced sleep delay or interruption for me.
Drinking more than three huge black coffees per day gives me the shits - like explosions every half hour. It sucks because I love unflavored black coffee at any temperature and every price point. I don’t even need a cigarette to enjoy it. It’s joy.

I can have a cup of coffee and lie down for a nap. Doesn't affect me.

Is caffeine really doing its job if you can nap after taking some?

R6, it’s all about tolerance. Slam lots of coffee and your body adjusts to the caffeine. Of course, when you quit your body acts like a bitch about it and you should avoid people for awhile.

I'm interested to know if any of you who consume coffee (or other sources of caffeine) in the afternoon or evening, and then have no trouble falling asleep, ever find yourselves wide awake in the middle of the night. That's my issue--it's like caffeine has some sort of weird half-life and kicks in hours after I've ingested it. Even a little bit of chocolate in the evening can wake me up again hours after I've gone to sleep.

I can drink it before I go to bed and still sleep...it just doesn't keep me awake

Fuck coffee drinkers! You're ALL an insufferable lot.
STOP BLOCKING THE "RIGHT OF WAY" trying to get into your favorite coffee dive!
GODDAMMIT! Sipping! Sipping! Sipping! That's all you clowns do!

I don't drink coffee, but I drink plenty of caffeinated soft drinks and have to stop at least by 4 p.m., like someone said above. If I have one after that, I'm likely to be tossing and turning half the night.

I bet a about a good two hour buzz from a cup of coffee. After that two hour window I can fall asleep just as easy and stay asleep.

Coffee has never affected my ability to sleep 18 hours a day.

Why not, R6? For some, coffee is a hot, refreshing drink, not a delivery mechanism for caffeine.

I drink coffee from dusk to dawn.

I drank coffee at 7 p.m. yesterday and slept fine afterwards. My boyfriend's dad, on the other hand, can't drink tea any later than 1 in the afternoon.

Drink it and no issue sleeping. I do, however, get massive diahreea from it. Then again, I have colitis and IBD so almost everything gives me diarrhea.

When I was under 25, caffeine didn't seem to have any effect on my sleep. Now that I'm just over 40, I can't drink coffee after noon without it affecting my sleep.
For those who drink it immediately before sleeping, caffeine takes about 30 minutes to provide its kick. Coffee-naps are a 'thing'... people will drink coffee, lie down for a nap and then rely on the coffee to wake them up about 45 min later. (Never tried this personally, it takes me a while to fall asleep, which would defeat the purpose.)

That's normal R20. Are you generally irregular or usually constipated?
Coffee cleans the GI and intestinal track.

When I was in my 20s I could drink 2 mugs of strong coffee but no later than 5 pm now that I'm an elder gay I drink one cup of decaf no later than noon.

I said noon for coffee, but I will have a nice afternoon tea if I'm in a slump.

I believe coffee or caffeine has a half life so it can kick in hours after you've consumed it. To those people waking up in the middle of the night, it might be the last surge hitting you

My 92 year old dad has been having a bedtime coffee for years. He has it about 9pm and is fast asleep by 10pm.
