Roller Derby Lesbians

I was big fan of the classic banked track Roller Derby from the 1960's and early 70's. I'm a gay guy who always preferred to watch the gals skate. I'm curious which of the famous female skaters were lesbians? One of the longest lasting skaters was villain Ann Calvello. From what I have read she was a party girl who liked the men. Joan Weston, "The Golden Girl" and "Blonde Amazon" will always be the best remembered and most popular. During her Derby career she opened a lesbian bar in Hayward, California called The Driftwood along with two other skaters, Cathie Read and Sandy Dunn. Cathie and Sandy were two other well known villains that Joan battled with on the track but were good friends with her off the track. Cathie has been partners with another skater, Janet Earp, for many years. Sandy has never married , had a very butch persona, and apparently doesn't want to be out. Joan didn't marry till late in life to skater NIck Scopas who had been married to and raised children with another villain skater, Jan Vallow. Joan never came out so she may have been straight or preferred not to be "out". He marriage to Nick was after the Derby folded and may have been as buddies for financial reasons. The competing banked track league was Roller Games. Judy Arnold was the queen of that league and may have been a closet lesbian. At the height of her career she became a born again Christian and quit skating to serve the Lord. She has never married and from some of her comments she gave up sinful living after her conversion. Judy Sowinski was that league's chief female villain and was an open lesbian.

I know a lot of it was theatrics but I always got a kick out of Roller Games skater and infield coach Georgia Hause . Her bull dyke persona was a hoot! The announcer would address her as "Georgia" and she would shout in his face "THAT'S MIZZ GEORGIA HAUSE TO YOU BUSTER AND DON'T YOU FORGET IT!"

I never watched it for more than a couple of minutes while switching channels as a kid in the 70's. I found it mildly amusing in small doses...especially that fat chick who had the number "747" on her jersey, which I thought was hilarious.

My dad's sister was an LA Roller Derby skater, but not one of the famous ones. It was kind of like the WWF for women back then.

The revival teams in Portland are now mostly men, now, which isn't much fun.
