I am curious about this from reading DL threads about everything that went on at the Mineshaft.
Did gay men at the height of gay debauchery in the 1970's and 1980's have monogamous, longlasting, committed relationships?

I was watching this doc on AIDS. A guy said he was at this party somewhere in a posh area of NYC in the early '80s. He said half of the men he ever wanted to sleep with were in that room. In the subsequent hour the other half of all the men he ever wanted to sleep with arrived. An actor (never mentioned his name) then came through the front door and started making out passionately with one of the guests. He realized that this was going to be an orgy and he was super excited because if there ever was an orgy he wanted to be in, it was this one.
Only one tiny problem. He was there with his lover and they were in a monogamous relationship for a few years and they didn't know the party was going to turn in an orgy. His partner said "We're leaving." "We're not doing this." "This is disgusting."
The guy went home with his partner but he was FURIOUS! He thought he was going to experience a great orgy and some personal liberation, but choose the LTR with his partner instead of the orgy.
He said fast forward 5 years into the future and EVERYONE who was at that party was dead by then.

I can empathize with the young man who was furious about leaving the orgy. Hope he got to experience something liberating before being in an LTR. I can only imagine how disheartening coming of age in the 80s must’ve been to so many gay men.
