Chris Hemsworth's Golden Goose trainers changed the sneaker game

The fugly sneaker movement isn't going anywhere if Chris Hemsworth has anything to do with it

While Chris Hemsworth isn't considered a sneakerhead in the same way that Timothée Chalamet or Adidas collaborator Jonah Hill are, the Thor muscleman was just sighted wearing one of the world's most trailblazing pair of trainers: the Golden Goose Db Men Mid Star sneakers.

Fifteen years ago the men's footwear market was largely focused around a minimal aesthetic. Box-fresh Common Projects shoes ruled the pavements, while everyone from former Celine creative director Phoebe Philo to Kanye West couldn't get enough of the simple Stan Smith. Then, without warning, Golden Goose presented purposely busted leather kicks in 2007, which went against the minimalism that most other brands were favouring and changed the game.

Goose's first pre-distressed shoe was the Superstar and it was unlike anything else seen on the market. The £550 faux-grubby trainers swiftly accumulated a cult following of the likes of West, A$AP Rocky, Jude Law and even clean-cut queen Taylor Swift.

Following their success with celebrities and sneakerheads alike, Goose dropped further scuffed shoes, including Hemsworth's beaten-up Mid Stars, which were a sellout hit. It wasn't long before other brands realised there was a thirst for ugly sneaks and they edged away from the minimal designs of the early 2000s. Balenciaga dropped those bulbous Triple S shoes, dirtied Maison Margiela and Gucci kicks did the rounds and A-Cold-Wall* and Nike codesigned footwear that aged dramatically with wear.

One of the most influential sneaker designs to have ever come to fruition, Goose's all-but-destroyed sneakers are still as popular as ever. Having received the nod from Hemsworth, over the course of the past year alone they've also been seen on the feet of Megan Fox, Ben Affleck, Jacob Elordi and Shawn Mendes.

Fuck all of them. I bought a pair in 2015. They look just like the current ones. I love clothing/shoes that look worn and destroyed.

My GG's are extremely uncomfortable though.

Pre-dirty kiks for 600 bucks?

by Anonymousreply 2June 5, 2021 3:47 PM

That guy from New Zealand probably would be orgasming at this and Chris Hemsworth if he was bi or gay.

I do like some distressed/worn clothing, but not shoes. I don't know why, but I like my footwear to be be pristine (even if some of my sneakers are aggressively ugly). I haven't seen a pair of Golden Goose shoes that I'd want to buy.

R4 - same. I like some distressed clothing but hate the look on shoes. They just look dirty and slovenly. I have always stuck to my Stan Smith and never saw the Golden Goose appeal. I've seen sneakers by Lagerfeld (with a cutout thsy looks like good ole' Karl on the side) on all the trendy women in Europe this year.

I've personally never understood the passion behind collecting sneakers. It seems because guys can't collect Hermès bags they start collecting sneakers. I used my Converses, Reeboks and Adidases until they had holes which is probably why it's hard to see them as objets d'art.

This is why I don't believe in fashion trends and celebrity endorsements. High end, distressed designer sneakers for £550? Fuck off.

by Anonymousreply 9June 7, 2021 6:01 AM

Ben Affleck has photographed wearing them.

So, people like wearing shoes that make them looks lazy, dirty and unkempt? In R6, all I see is someone disgusting who couldn't be bothered to dress decently before he left his house (wash those disgusting tennis shoes, you pig!).

And people are paying £400 for those old, ugly-looking things? This is the best argument I've ever read in favour of a VERY violent revolution. So now, the rich play 'poor people dressup' for shits and giggles? Not to mention that the fact that there ar epeople stupid enough to waste thousands so they can collect fucking RUBBER, PLASTIC and FABRIC shoes, is INSANE.

Also, R8, at least Hermès bags are made in what is supposed to be the finest leather, and have gold rivets and the more expensive ones, diamond-encrusted clasps and God knows what other nonsense (and yes, I think that wasting $10,000 on a handbag is just as insane). However, these things are at least hand made by the best artisans with exclusive, difficult-to-find materials. Tennis shoes are made out of rubber, cheap fabric and plastic, for God's sake. In the scale of stupidity, a Birkin or Kelly bag are a solid 7, but paying these prices for the cheapest crap imaginable is a 10+++++++ in terms of sheer idiocy.

fashion victim.

celebs don't even pay for them. they get them for free.

I can think of better ways to waste 600 bucks.

It's not even that great looking. no support etc.

by Anonymousreply 12July 19, 2021 9:47 AM

I've had to break in expensive boots by these assholes and I'm not doing it for their sneakers.

Golden Goose have never fit for me and I'm still convinced Bluefly sent me Gucci factory seconds or counterfeits when I bought Gucci sneakers on sale. Their sizing was different from what I usually wear. I'm a 71/2 Gucci and this shit was size 8.

by Anonymousreply 13July 19, 2021 10:13 AM

Wealthy sorority girls love these shoes for some reason.

by Anonymousreply 14July 19, 2021 10:16 AM

So I should pay more than five hundred bucks to look like I don't wash myself and have serious hygiene problem. Nothing screams homeless like those sneakers.

by Anonymousreply 15July 19, 2021 10:21 AM

it screams desperate wannabe trying too hard.

by Anonymousreply 16July 19, 2021 10:23 AM

Maybe Chris Hemsworth should buy his Indian twink former co-star who is very enamored of him a pair.

I'd pay $600 for Chris's used underwear.

by Anonymousreply 19August 19, 2021 6:15 PM

Ooh r19.

by Anonymousreply 20October 24, 2021 11:18 PM

Why would someone so hot settle down with one woman and have kids running around everywhere? It sounds so repressive.

by Anonymousreply 21October 24, 2021 11:29 PM

Yeah he seems to be a little bit infatuated with Chris Hemsworth r17.

by Anonymousreply 22October 25, 2021 6:04 AM

R21 because he wanted to.

by Anonymousreply 23October 25, 2021 10:51 AM

Any recognizable item that everyone knows costs too much, they rush out and buy it.
