Anne Hathaway's strange career
I think "Havoc" was her first mistake. Not a good movie and a really crass attempt to shred her Disney image (she's lucky that Brokeback Mountain was right around the corner). Her next mistake was Bride Wars - why would one of the biggest, most respected young actresses in Hollywood do a movie like that? From then on, her career was largely solid until around the late 2010s (the bad far out outweighing the good).
Thoughts?

[quote]why would one of the biggest, most respected young actresses in Hollywood do a movie like that?
Because she was a working actress who couldn't sit on her throne throwing unwanted scripts at the help. ' She did "Bride Wars" because she was offered it and it and paid the bills.

If she had done Silver Linings Playbook (she dropped out) would she have won best Lead Actress? Our Sally could have won her third for Lincoln..

She's either poorly advised or just has terrible taste. I think she has serious issues about her "likeability" or "relatability" so she does dumb, broad comedies to stay commercially viable. And then they inevitably bomb.
I had been a fan back in the day but based on recent movies like THE HUSTLE I may never see another one. (I didn't see THE WITCHES remake but it looked like a misfire.) She needs another smart sophisticated ensemble comedy like DEVIL WORE PRADA. Or perhaps a musical.

She was an actor in 2 (maybe classic?) movies. Princess Diaries and The Devil wears Prada
Those are the only two movies I remember her for

Despite my reservations about her, she really was one of the best things about LES MIZ. She deserved that Best Supporting Oscar.

I thought she was hysterical as the pretentious actress in Oceans 8. Up to that she seemed too 'serious' an actress (in the Theater vein) to do that part so well.

I still wonder how she thought it was a good idea to flash her vagina to the paparazzi while campaigning for an Oscar. Such a tacky and weird look.

I remember Bride Wars as funny, and I think it was successful. It also showed she could do comedy and sing (didn't she sing in that?) so I think that was a good choice on her part.

She's also 38, will be 39 this year.
It's still an age where some lead actresses' careers evaporate. If she's smart, she'll follow Reese, Kidman, Aniston, and the others who do episodic TV. A limited series with a high profile and a serious budget.

She got her start in the Princess Diaries films and Ella Enchanted, which are comedies. She wasn’t demonstrating any new skills In BW.

OP is monday morning quarterbacking in a way that is common for entertainment journalists but not the way these things work in reality. Anne Hathaway is a hard worker, she reads scripts and is an extremely dedicated actress. I have no idea if she's intelligent, has any taste in material, and whether you like watching her is a personal gut thing.
But the decisions regarding a filmography are useless to approach like this because the decision to do movies is often done by committee, on the fly, and based on what's available at that moment. It's also based on whats going on in the career of the agents and managers both representing the actor PLUS whats going on with the agents and managers co-workers. A lot of horse trading goes on inside agencies. That's not taking into account the financing game, which suggests 3x as many movies are happening six months from now than actually get made. So Anne might have been attached to four movies that year and none happened and HAVOC was filming in a few weeks and....I have no idea if thats the case but its the type of chaos that exists.
EXAMPLE: Jason Bateman turned down JUNO. As Juno was a few weeks away from filming the role hadn't been cast. Jennifer Garner had been cast as the adoptive mother and it may be the best role in the movie. She wanted that movie to get made. She was friends with Bateman and worked with him before. So she pushed her agents on him. As for the agents--they were able to come back to Bateman with a much better backend deal because he was the last one to be cast. He made millions more (since it was a rare indie megahit) than if he'd said yes a few months earlier. But why did he say yes? His wife had given birth three weeks earlier. He was tired and miserable and liked the idea of getting out of the house for a few weeks. If they'd asked him a month earlier it would have been a definite no, maybe even a week earlier he wouldn't have entertained it. Another month or two and he mightve been more settled with the baby. But they hit at the right time, he said OK, and a movie happened.

I'm R17. I forgot to mention Anne likes to remind people she was the studios 8th choice for The Devil Wears Prada. So at that point, even after Princess Diaries, she was still a name far down on a list and probably had tried out for dozens of projects that she didn't get (most of which probably sucked but were big parts in studio movies)

That's an interesting story about Jason Bateman and JUNO. He owes Jennifer Garner a favor, because JUNO (for all its flaws) remains one of Bateman's best films. I'm a fan--he's a talented, appealing actor--but most of his movies are dreadful.
It's also some of Garner's best onscreen work, and I'm not really her fan.

I didn't see her do the musical CARNIVAL at Encores, but apparently she was terrific.
Would love to see her do a musical or play, but she has 2 kids and may not want to make that kind of time commitment. Broadway is hard that way.

I actually just watched her in a movie called One Day. She was also in Love and Other Drugs with Jake Gyllenhaal where she played his mentally unstable girlfriend. She’s been in a lot of things I’ve watched. Whereas some other big actors I’ve barely watched anything they’ve been in.

LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS is a romantic comedy from the guy who gave us Thirtysomething and The Last Samurai and Blood Diamond.
Hathaway plays a woman who I think is diagnosed with MS, she is not mentally ill. It's an amazing, funny romantic comedy/drama. Central to the story is Gyllenhaal's character who happens to be a pharmaceutical rep at the time Viagra was released. That true experience (maybe it was an article or book?) was the premise for why they developed it into a feature.

It's nice to hear her work in theatre has been so well received, validating what a poster said on another Anne Hathaway thread: "Honestly, she should stick to broadway. Her exaggerated facial features, voice, and height plus her very natural theatrical acting style lends itself well to the stage. It looks awkward on film but on stage it's great." Could Anne have film/television career rejuvenation in her later years a la Angela Lansbury?

"Bride Wars" pretty much killed the standard rom-com genre. It went even further than "27 Dresses" (which had been the previous low) in exposing that American weddings were all about the bride's greed and about her sticking it to her "friends."
"Bridesmaids," which followed, was so different from what had preceded it that you can't even categorize it as a rom-com. It at least celebrated female friendship instead of showing women to be vicious, petty, envious harpies.

"Bride Wars" was a critical flop and didn't gross anything close to bragging about. I also don't believe she took "Bride Wars" to pay the bills. She was already insanely rich. I think she just secretly likes shitty romcoms.
She hasn't been in anything memorable in a long time. She also hasn't had a hit since Ocean's 8 (and even that wasn't exactly huge).

She turned down "Knocked Up" for an odd reason. That could have a disastrous move, but no real effect. That deleted scene of Jonah Hill's Brokeback Mountain rant would have been even funnier with her in the Heigl role.
I also feel "Knocked Up" would go from being a good, but somewhat forgotten comedy to one of be one of the most talked about movies of all time if the Alison character got an abortion at the end.

That upcoming Harry Styles fanfic movie should be her biggest hit since Ocean's 8, but I wish they would have cast a younger actor in the Harry-esque role.
Though, what I really want is a project with a 40/50ish lead actress with a much younger male love interest and they never mention the age gap. You rarely see older woman-younger man pairings and when you do, they always make a big deal out of the age difference. How many times have we seen a 40-50ish lead actor with a much younger female love interest and the movie/show doesn't bat an eye?

Projects due out next year:
Eileen: This one is the most interesting, imo.
Mothers' Instinct: I like that she's working with her buddy Jessica Chastain, but this is a remake of a mediocre 2018 French movie. Not very encouraging.
The Idea of You: Could be a hit, but it's still Harry Stiles fanfiction. Her co-star is only 12 years younger than her. in the book, it was more like a 16-20 year age gap. They're already watering it down. Not that it would good in the first time.
