I am confused. This sort of thing was always part of the NYC parade and straight parents still brought their kids to the parade. My problem is that it got really boring and corporate. The old-time political street theater was gone. It became about banks, travel corporations, and AIDS charities with little or no Gay clients.

I really don't think of myself as prude, but one thing about being gay that annoys me is that a lot of straight people have this idea that being gay is all about sex sex sex sex sex. Sex at the gym, in the car, on the side of the road, sex with all our friends all the time. I was in college from 96-2001, just when straight people started accepting gay people and trying to figure us out and so many straight people assumed that all my friends and I just had sex with one another all the time. Personally I think anyone LGB should be welcome at Pride. If you're going to celebrate your sexual orientation, which is the one thing we all have in common, then you can't get to police who can and cannot come. I don't have any time for Prides any more, but when I was just out in the late 1980s/early 1990s they were amazing and eye opening and joyous and as eye-rolling as it may make you feel, I felt part of an actual community. Again I say I dont have a problem with some nudity,but some Pride parades have gotten too extreme. Its not about sexual freedom,its about shocking the straights(and more than a few gays) .

I remember a DC gay pride parade a long time ago - maybe at least 20 years ago. It was advertised as family friendly and that all people should come and bring their families. Because at the time gays were still trying to get public support and acceptance.

It was actually great to be a part of and watch the community participation. Lot of fun and camaraderie. There were certainly drag queens and some fun kink but nothing vulgar. In the park near the P Street Beach there 'ere stands/booths and one had anal butt plugs - all I could think was WTF could this idiot be thinking?

Yes some things are meant to be private and when you're talking about a parade on public streets then sorry but you cannot do whatever the hell you feel like. You can't keep children away from parades.

And, no, the parades were not about demonstrating what gays did in private sexual situations. They were about celebrating the community and support from the non-gay community at large.

What does a leather daddy or SM type have to do with gay rights? Seriously. The whole point is that gays are humans like everyone else and not to catalogue every sexual activity or kink. Actually what is gay about those things - those are straight kinks as well.

Pride wasnt just about gay rights it was also a place where you could be free to be and express yourself among others who felt the same as you. When society constantly tells you that you're sick and wrong why not allow yourself the freedom one day a year to let your freak flag fly man. Sex and kink is used ad nauseum in tv, ads, and movies but god forbid the gays do the same at their own god damned parade.

I went to two pride parades and that was enough. God I hated them. Like something created by the most bigoted straights imaginable. They even included a man/boy love contingent. I thought fuck this gross shit. What was next the scat queen toilet 'float'?

I'd rather the straight people just stay home. Why a gay man has to jockey to get into a gay bar on that day only to be confronted with straight PDAs is beyond me.
