Have you ever had to terminate a job interview where you were in the HR or hiring role?

Not too many times, but it did happen. There was a position a colleague was the principal interviewer for and she asked me to assist her, as I was overseeing the office as a direct report. The opening was entry-level clerical and receptionist work and had a clear career track into a research and general support role. The young woman applicant, well-dressed and clearly from a wealthy background, was told that answering the phone was a key part of the position. She drew in her breath and said, rolling her eyes: "There are things that I will do...and there are things I will not do. And one of the things I will not do is answer the phone."

My colleague, nonplussed, asked her why she had applied for a receptionist position.

She said: "To host receptions, of course."

This applicant sounds remarkable nonetheless.

Oh, and thank you for using the word "nonplussed" correctly. It is very rare one sees this.

I interviewed a woman who was very qualified for a bookkeeping position. In walked this 350lb behemoth, who informed me she'd need a special chair, a special handrest for her keyboard (because carpal tunnel), and regaled me with stories about successfully suing previous employers for various reasons.

I couldn't get her out of my office fast enough.

I remember being interviewed, but that little rich girl was me. HR asked me about start times and I said I hated getting up early and preferred to start at 10.

[quote] regaled me with stories about successfully suing previous employers for various reasons.

I've had a couple prospective employees do that in interviews. WTF? Do they think that gives them a leg up or something? Stupid.

Bad-mouthing a previous employer, with some exceptions, is always a red-flag for me.
