Hot Vintage Athletes

You might have heard that yesterday, June 2, was the first-ever MLB Lou Gehrig Day. Damn! From his days on the Columbia University football team right up to the choked-up farewell speech at Yankee Stadium.

Was there ever a finer athletic specimen than back-in-the-day Lou Gehrig? What a beautiful man. And a haunting story. If he were alive and playing today, he'd be the hottest player in the MLB.

Another shot of Lou. Crying at Yankee Stadium. This dying man cried sexy tears.

A beautiful and quintessential American moment.

Look for team photos of prep school and college rowing (crew) teams from the late 19th through late 20th centuries. Those guys were shameless and their photos left nothing to the imagination, thank God.

Ted Williams was fucking gorgeous. He interrupted his baseball career twice to serve in the military --- WW2 and Korea.

Before his terminal diagnosis, Lou Gehrig also made a lackluster attempt at diversifying into film (starring in the original "Rawhide," which apparently wasn't very good). He auditioned to replace Johnny Weissmuller as Hollywood's Tarzan and even posed for publicity stills. I'm taken back (in a pleasant way) by his willingness to pose and reveal.

Another of Gehrig as Tarzan. 1936.

by Anonymousreply 33June 7, 2021 2:42 PM

R13 Ernie Langeberg was a Playgirl and Colt model. He wasn't a "vintage athlete."

by Anonymousreply 34June 7, 2021 2:59 PM

R32 Frank Gifford in his prime was gorgeous!

by Anonymousreply 35June 7, 2021 4:32 PM

I agree, R31. I didn't know a thing about baseball but those Jim Palmer ads made me twitch. He had no problem showing his package; always looked straight into the camera, directly at me.

by Anonymousreply 36June 7, 2021 4:36 PM

R34. Ernie Langeberg shown in R13 is someone I'd like to meet in the showers after a the game. That's enough for me to have him included in this thread.

I figure if Jim Palmer (or even Jenner) can be considered vintage, then surely speedskater Eric Heiden, winner of 5 gold medals at the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid, can!

Lord have mercy on that Frank Gifford! Damn' R32 you did well! I had no idea about Frank Gifford like that.

Lou Gehrig was soo handsome that Gary Cooper played him in the biopic. Gary Cooper in his prime, he was just out of his pretty boy phase (he was downright beautiful in his youth) and had some wrinkles set in.
