Simu Liu goes off in a lengthy Facebook post

Sounds like things were a mess behind the scenes at Kim's Convenience.

He sounds like a whiny bitch.

by Anonymousreply 1June 3, 2021 1:23 AM

What the fuck is "Kim's Convenience"? There are 500 channels now, who has the time figure it all out?

by Anonymousreply 2June 3, 2021 1:23 AM

Canadian show, r2, also on Netflix. It’s actually really cute. Pretty light fair, but good.

by Anonymousreply 3June 3, 2021 1:25 AM

He was cultural appropriation. He is Chinese but he was playing Korean.

by Anonymousreply 4June 3, 2021 1:29 AM

^it's about an Asian massage parlour.

by Anonymousreply 5June 3, 2021 1:30 AM

He’s hot. He could just start an only fans.

by Anonymousreply 6June 3, 2021 1:36 AM

The problem was that the creator and head writer, Ins Choi, whose life the show was based on, was running out of steam. This started out as a play where he played the son (the role Simu plays on tv) and he toured the play all over the world. Then came the tv deal where Ins was writer and producer. You can tell by Season 5 that he was starting to run out of ideas because that season is not as sharp as the first four. He had originally agreed to do six seasons, but backed out of the last one, and I think it was the right choice. Better to leave on a high note than be forced to produce a crap season.

And if Ins had decided to play the son on tv, nobody would have heard of Simu Liu.

I saw the reaction to his post before I actually read it and people felt he was doing himself a disservice and being whiny, but I think he articulated his frustrations well. If you're not going to champion for yourself who will? So many people want the behind the scenes dirt and when an actor actually provides it people dub them a messy bitch who lives for drama.

The only thing he should be careful of is using his social media to rile fans up. He was pretty diplomatic in his post, but I can see him running to social media after Shang-Chi's release and criticizing Disney/Marvel for whatever reason. Some of his fans were quick to coin him a sell-out and Uncle Tom because he booked a film with Mark Wahlberg and quickly he deleted his 2018 tweets criticizing Mark Wahlberg for trying to get a clean slate after beating a Vietnamese man.

by Anonymousreply 8June 3, 2021 1:42 AM

Kim’s Convenience is a fucking minstrel show.

by Anonymousreply 9June 3, 2021 1:42 AM

He insults the showrunners, he insults one of the writers, then goes on about how he tried to get more creative control on the show. You're an actor, not the writer.

He sounds exhausting.

Let's hear about how Marvel was horrible when his last Marvel film is released.

Simu Liu has been discussed at length on one of the Canadian Gossip threads but allegedly he has a reputation for being a dick. Allegedly he had a big chip on his shoulder and acted as if he was the star of the show.

He isn't wrong that the cast of Kim's Convenience got paid pennies but that's Canadian TV for you. Canadian actors who make the choice to stay and work in Canada aren't in it for the money. Yes, the cast of Schitt's Creek made more money but that's because it was a co-American production and had a much larger budget. Also, Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara were legit stars when the show began and they were both also made producers of the show in order to increase their salaries. As for Liu not getting nominations, um maybe because you're not that good of an actor? Also because Kim's Convenience was not a joint American production, it did not qualify for things like Emmys and Golden Globes.

by Anonymousreply 11June 3, 2021 4:15 PM

None of the cast have made any comment about Simu's post. Very telling IMO.

by Anonymousreply 12June 3, 2021 4:32 PM

The sister and parents carried the show as actors. He’s just hot. That’s probably why his character never grew.

by Anonymousreply 13June 3, 2021 4:54 PM

I used to follow him on Twitter but he seemed very self-involved (I mean many actors are but more so than the norm) and angry about a lot of stuff. I can totally see him being difficult to work with.

by Anonymousreply 14June 3, 2021 5:42 PM

I read his post and he seems narcissistic. I think his world he was the star of the show and was pissed the producers didn't see it that way. He also suggests that people involved with the show were jealous of his LA success.

by Anonymousreply 15June 3, 2021 5:55 PM

[quote]That’s probably why his character never grew.

But his character actually did grow on the show. He worked on the relationship with his father, he got promoted at work, he took business classes, he entered a relationship with Shannon.

by Anonymousreply 16June 3, 2021 5:55 PM

Andrew Phung took a bit of a subtle swipe at Simu Liu on Twitter by saying her for one cannot wait until the spin-off "Strays" (the series Liu blasted for being white) to start airing. Also all the lead actors of Kim's Convenience no longer follow Simu on Twitter.

by Anonymousreply 17June 4, 2021 8:18 PM

Simu basically shit all over the show, all the while still making it about him and his ego.

by Anonymousreply 18June 5, 2021 1:00 AM

[quote]None of the cast have made any comment about Simu's post

One actor has finally made a comment, but not directly tied to Simu, but as a reply to an article written about Simu's dissatisfaction with the show.

Jean Yoon: Dear sir, as an Asian Canadian woman, a Korean-Canadian woman w more experience and knowledge of the world of my characters, the lack of Asian female, especially Korean writers in the writers room of Kims made my life VERY DIFFICULT & the experience of working on the show painful.

Your attack on my cast mate @SimuLiu, in the defense of my fellow Korean artist Ins Choi is neither helpful nor merited. Mr. Choi wrote the play, I was in in. He created the TV show, but his co-creator Mr. Kevin White was the showrunner, and clearly set the parameters.

This is a FACT that was concealed from us as a cast. It was evident from Mr. Choi's diminished presence on set, or in response to script questions. Between S4 and S5, this FACT became a crisis, and in S5 we were told Mr. Choi was resuming control of the show.

by Anonymousreply 19June 6, 2021 8:17 PM

I agree with Simu Liu 100%

by Anonymousreply 20June 6, 2021 8:20 PM

He better be careful, Hollywood has a way of humbling people like him.

He better thread lightly.

He'll end up no where very quickly. He'll get sent right back to Canada in a hot second. He better humble himself and fast.

by Anonymousreply 21June 6, 2021 9:39 PM

The Globe & Mail is calling him out for being a whiny brat. Simu is not wrong that there was a representation problem in the writers room (though the author of the piece points out that the show had 13 women writers across it's 5 season run, even more than show's like Schitt's Creek ever had), but the way he raised the issue effectively trashed the career of one of the few Korean producers and writers in the Canadian TV industry. And G&M rightly points out that while Simu might have been underpaid, he was not on the same level as 40+ year veterans like Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara ... he was a nobody before this show.

That writer of the Globe and Mail article is being dragged on Twitter.

by Anonymousreply 23June 7, 2021 3:31 AM

R23 of course because if a person isn't white than they are automatically excluded from being an egotistical whining brat.

by Anonymousreply 24June 7, 2021 3:36 AM

I’ve never heard of this show in my life. Is this a show in Asia or something? Or is it a show on one of those low-budget channels like Ion?

by Anonymousreply 25June 7, 2021 3:43 AM

R25 It's a Canadian comedy about a Korean family that runs a convenience store in Toronto. It airs on the CBC in Canada (a major network in Canada) and streams on Netflix internationally. It's gained a strong following internationally (though not as big as Schitt's Creek) and Simu Liu has been cast in an upcoming Marvel movie.
