No, I am not Chinese, but debated whether the China apologists or the China bashers would object lounder.
Like I said, I got addicted to it.
I agree with r2 - the lead actress was really great. She played it with a quiet power - like a grandmaster chess player - navigating imperial court intrigue.
Yes, it was melodrama, but they really stick it to the villains when they finally get their comeuppance. One consort was sentenced to being painfully poised each day, then when she was close to death, given the antidote. Rinse and repeat every day for years.

I looked forward to it so much because I had been a fan of its prequel Zhenhuan Zhuan. But it turned out to be a disappointment. The trailer below is much better than the actual show.
If you like such thing, OP, I highly recommend Hong Kong costume drama War and Beauty (2004). The OG palace bitchfest and my all-time favorite Chinese TV show.
