London's New See-Through Skyscraper Pool Has Twitter Users Saying 'Hell No!'
A see-through pool set 115 feet in the air between two London skyscrapers is definitely making a big splash online, but Twitter users found a way to throw cold water on it.
The Sky Pool at the Embassy Gardens apartments is the world’s largest floating acrylic pool ― 82 feet long, 46 of which are suspended in midair, according to the Robb Report.
Residents can swim from one side to the other and see the street 10 stories below.
The Sky Pool was officially opened to residents earlier this month, but it really made waves on Twitter Tuesday morning after the BBC posted video of it.
While many people thought the Sky Pool was awesome, a lot of responses suggested a fear of heights combined with a fear of drowning, to the tune of “Hell, no!”

As though Twitter users will ever have the choice or opportunity to swim in that.

Between two skyscrapers and 10 stories up seems lame. At the very least 50 stories up.

I'm no engineer but how is that structurally sound without some type of reinforcement in the middle? That said, I'm more fearful of the bed bugs in England...

They have to say transparent because the American Copper Buildings already have a oool in the skybridge connecting the two towers. It’s in Murray hill. I used to see it constantly from walks to Glick Park. If you’re there at the right time and the sun is hitting the skybridge just so, you can see the sunlight reflecting off the shimmering water of the pool. It’s beautiful.
I may be misremembering this, but I think they were originally going to use a clear acrylic floor on the American Copper Building’s skybridge pool, but reconsidered when they concluded that it would make the pool more of a gimmick than a heavily used amenity. The thought was that many if not most people would find the view, and lack of privacy, unpleasant.

I saw a "making of" video about this pool. It slides on teflon rather then being firmly fixed in place on either tower.

Must be quite the adrenalin rush. The whole time you're there swimming, your brain is screaming "WE ARE GOING TO DIE!!!" I guess that's the appeal, but it eludes me.

That pool is awesome! Swimming underwater gives you a sense of flying and weightlessness. To be suspended from the ground would be incredible or to swim laps. I'm coming to London, gurls, and am brining my tiniest speedo. I'd love to have just one swim in there. Where is this, Battersea?

I would get into the pool when lots of people were looking and get right into the middle of the pool and extrude a glorious big turd and listen to the gasps of horror from ten flights down.

It can also change over time. I was never a thrill seeker, but I went skydiving with a friend when I was in my 30s. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience I couldn't say no to. I was tense and mildly scared.
Now, I get queasy or slightly dizzy and get tingling sensations in the soles of my feet just seeing action sequences taped on rooftops in police procedurals. (Why do foot chases always wind up on the roof? Makes no sense.) Seeing still selfies of thrill seekers who take pictures hanging from skyscrapers or on mountain tops have the same effect.
It's such a physiological phenomenon, I'm convinced it's somehow tied to menopause. It's right about when it started to happen. Human wiring is weird.

R40 - it has to be some self-preservation thing. We don't heal as fast when we age. We don't have the same resilience to bounce back to where we were before injuries. It must be survival mechanism imprinted in our DNA that allows our bodies to say stop!

[quote]tingling sensations in the soles of my feet
I get this, as does my mom. I don't have to be up high, either, I can just look up at tall buildings or cranes and get that sensation. I've tried to describe it to people but no one knows what I'm talking about. It's an achy tingle, like my feet are telling me to step away from the edge of the cliff.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | June 3, 2021 2:07 AM

I get it all the way up to right above my knees and the back of my scalp. It's a cross between the tail end of sitting funny and cutting off the blood supply tingles ending and my skin crawling. My lips go numb too if it's moving, like those wide scenic swooping mountain shots.

It is one piece of moulded acrylic.
So it will not tear at the seams but it will shred in an earthquake.
