Anyone watching The Mosquito Coast on AppleTV+?
I’ve watched the first two episodes. Unlike the novel and the 1986 film, the series has the Fox family on the run from federal NSA agents (acting as some kind of domestic police force) for some so-far unspecified crime committed nine years in the past. More like“Running on Empty” to mix River Phoenix films.
This makes the story less a psychological drama than the original, though the father (played by Justin Theroux who is the nephew of the novel’s author Paul Theroux), still has anger issues and hates US consumerism.
I don’t like Theroux’s performance. I’m not sure how long I’ll stick with it.

Theroux's big penis bouncing in his sweatpants in "The Leftovers," which honestly should be getting residuals at this point.

Yes. A lot of Ozark, but with even less attention paid to plausibility. In five episodes we’ve had this family involved in multiple car chases, two shoot-outs resulting in multiple deaths, and the parents still haven’t told the kids (or us) what they are running from. The NSA set a trap for the daughter with an old news report saying they had kidnapped her younger brother, but she has not confronted them about it. Chased by the NSA, a Mexican cartel and their British assassin with a network of street urchins, right-wing vigilantes, a mysterious organization called Casa Rioja, and the local police wherever they go.
I’m surprised Paul Theroux agreed to this.

I guess Theroux wanted some of that Ozark acclaim Jason Bateman has enjoyed.

Are they hinting the son is gay? There were two episodes in a row where he encountered a good-looking young man and seemed enthralled by him.

Well, he’s certainly lonely.

I really WANT to like this but so far I'm just not engaged. I've never really cared for Melissa George as an actress. I can't really explain why, but she just doesn't grab me. Maybe if they threw in some naked scenes of Justin I would be more interested.

I read the book and watched the movie back in the day, and liked both a lot and I was excited to read that a series was coming out. Also, I liked Justin Theroux a lot in The Leftovers, so I figured it was worth a peek.
I watched the first 2 episodes and was let down by the change in the main reason for the family leaving the US. The setup was a little slow but I still had some interest. When it looked like they were going to make this a teen drama with so much of the focus put on the teenage daughter. I stopped watching because I hate teen drama. I intended to catch up on it after I finished with some other shows, but after reading what R4 wrote, I don't think I'm going back.

I have never read the book or seen the Harrison Ford movie. What was the main premise in those?

An idealist uproots his family to a remote Caribbean island, away from the consumerism which he perceives to be choking America. He sets about creating a Utopia in the jungle by bringing ice to the natives and uses his genius for making gadgets to enhance their primitive lifestyle. However, he also alienates his long-suffering family, and his enterprise proves fatally flawed.

It's been a lot of years, but this is what I recall: Ford is an inventor who wants to move out of the corrupt, lazy, wasteful USA. The family goes to some jungle (in Central or South America - I forget) - they arrive with no house even built to move into - they have to build everything.
Ford decides that the locals need a giant ice making machine, which is what will bring them out of the dark ages, and becomes obsessed with getting it running. Mishaps ensue and his miracle ice machine has problems and Ford gets increasingly more manic. His kids have trouble fitting in in their new environment and watching Dad spin out of control. I forget how it ends.

In the book, the father is intensely charismatic but manipulative and paranoid. He believes that he is a visionary figure who is dragging his family away from a toxic society. At one point, to stop his children from wanting to go back to the United States, he tells them the country has been destroyed. Giving him actual government antagonists who are after him destroys the premise of the story.

I watched the first episode a few days ago. I liked it. I thought it was good. I like to support Australian actors and actresses too. I like Justin Theroux who plays the father. The daughter was annoying, but become less annoying at the end of episode 1. I'm going to continue with the series and see what happens. I still haven't worked out why they are on the run.

Yeah, it’s kind of annoying that not even the kids know yet why they are on the run. I kind of think it’s because of something the mom did, not the dad.

R17 yeah I was a bit annoyed that they hadn't informed the kids on the reason why they have to live the way they are. I mean, they are old enough to know and not telling them actually makes things worse in my opinion. Yeah I'm still unsure if it's because the Mum/Mom did something wrong or because the Dad did something wrong which put them in their predicament. Or maybe it's not because of anything they did wrong, but something they uncovered or were wrongly accused of. It's interesting to me.
