Bette Midler
Actresses who are desperate for an Oscar

Barbra Streisand since she wants another one she doesn’t have to share with somebody who has three others all to herself.

Those two really believe they're more actress than entertainer and they couldn't be more wrong. They've both been blessed with wonderful comic timing, but every time they try to get dramatic, they're awful. I don't understand. Usually, comic actors are wonderful dramatic actors as well.

Amy Adams
by Anonymous | reply 3 | May 30, 2021 7:17 PM |
Tara Reid
by Anonymous | reply 4 | May 30, 2021 7:19 PM |
Viola Davis really wants an Oscar. Correction. She wants an Academy Award for Best Actress. She will not stop until she gets an ACADEMY AWARD FOR BEST ACTRESS.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | May 30, 2021 7:21 PM |
Saoirse Ronan.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | May 30, 2021 7:22 PM |
Jessica Chastain.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | May 30, 2021 7:22 PM |
This goes without saying, Glenn Close.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | May 30, 2021 7:25 PM |
Poor Sally Kirkland back in the day.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | May 30, 2021 7:27 PM |
All of them.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | May 30, 2021 7:27 PM |
Do I really have to say it?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | May 30, 2021 7:31 PM |
Amy Adams' desperation is starting to show. She needs to stop and compose herself. If she doesn't choose her next project wisely, she could end up being demoted to playing wives and mothers in stupid comedies...or worse...she could be headlining her own sitcom.l

Preach! She needs to turn down the rolls for her next role and play some sort of sophisticated, well heeled woman. I liked her as a train wreck in Sharp Object, but I am tired of seeing her so slovenly and down trodden.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | May 30, 2021 7:37 PM |
Michelle Williams. Didn't she have a breakdown in the bathroom when she didn't win one year?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | May 30, 2021 8:07 PM |
Amy Adams. Glenn Close. Michelle Williams.
I remember back in the day Dame Shannon Elizabeth said she wanted a career and Oscar like Meryl.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | May 30, 2021 8:15 PM |
Margot Robbie
by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 30, 2021 8:17 PM |
Michelle Pfeiffer (who more than deserved one by now)
Jessica Chastain
by Anonymous | reply 17 | May 30, 2021 8:18 PM |
Another vote for Amy Adams. The critics adore her but I have the same problem with her that I do with Michelle Williams- she is completely lacking in zest. Just bland and passive.

#1) Oh, [italic]dear.[/italic]
("Roles," not "rolls"--unless you're saying she needs to cut the carbs.)
#2) I thought that was what her role in "Nocturnal Animals" was about--an Oscar bid as a sophisticated, well-heeled woman.

Bette def seems a bit bitter about losing for The Rose, but other than For the Boys she doesn't pick Oscar bait roles. Stella and Beached are obvious 'chick flicks' that nobody would expect to win awards.
I'm not sure an Oscar will happen for her now - maybe supporting if she worked on an unusual indie movie that challenges her.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | May 30, 2021 8:22 PM |
Dame Angela Lansbury. Her odds are even lower than Glenn's, but better than Bette's. I would genuinely love to see it happen for her. But it's highly unlikely at this point. The lady is 95.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | May 30, 2021 8:32 PM |
r21, it may be that Angela Lansbury is overdue an Oscar, but I can guarantee you at this point in her life especially she is not "desperate" for one.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | May 30, 2021 8:35 PM |
Madonna. If you can call her an actress. She's SERIOUSLY fucking desperate for that validation. Just as desperate as Oprah, who has even tried to get one by producing Oscar bait on multiple occasions. Give it up, cunts! It's not going to happen!

Amy Adams was so delightful in Junebug, Drop Dead Gorgeous, and Enchanted and I've been disappointed with her in just about everything I've seen her in since. None of that joy is present anymore. She seems like she only wants to play the most depressing characters in the most depressing stories and that's just not her skill set. Some actors can do that and you take that journey with them, but she appears to be under the impression that you have to suck all the joy out of a role to be taken seriously as an actress and that couldn't be further from the truth. People like flawed characters who you can still root for if they have a little humor or charm. There's nothing to root for when she plays a character like that. She seems like such a passive victim.
Michelle Williams has this problem, too. They both seem so humorless. It was nice to see Michelle find a little joy when she was playing Gwen Verdon, but she even managed to make Sally Bowles a pathetic sad sack.

Angela Lansbury was put out of her misery and awarded an honorary Oscar ( same trophy, but in recognition of a career as opposed to a role).
by Anonymous | reply 26 | May 31, 2021 12:40 AM |
Glenn...I was THIS Close...owns this thread
by Anonymous | reply 27 | May 31, 2021 1:00 AM |
I don't have a problem with Amy Adams but her A list career is a little confusing. She's no great beauty and she's an OK actress but nothing special.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | May 31, 2021 1:03 AM |
Midler and Streisand aren't desperate for an Oscar. They barely work as actresses. And after Bette dropped out of the Phil Spector movie after filming had started, my guess is no studio or financier is going to be taking a leap with her anytime soon.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | May 31, 2021 1:22 AM |
Meryl Streep. Even though she has a ton you just know that bitch wants more of them!
by Anonymous | reply 30 | May 31, 2021 1:51 AM |
R30: I wonder how she feels now that Frances has more Best Actress wins than her.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | May 31, 2021 2:57 AM |
No, really, now that I think of it, that person can't be said to be "desperate for an Oscar."
What's the word for "being so far beyond desperate that desperate can't be seen with a telescope?"
That.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | May 31, 2021 3:09 AM |
Carey Mulligan.
And she will eventually get one
by Anonymous | reply 33 | May 31, 2021 3:35 AM |
Movie theaters will be a thing of the past within 10 years.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | May 31, 2021 4:45 AM |
r34 They will be more specialized. AMC realized they could charge more for nicer seats and didn't need 400 seat theaters that sat 90% empty during the week. They also did very well with their $19-24 per month AMC Premiere plan before the pandemic.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | May 31, 2021 5:39 AM |
The next pandemic will destroy them. It's coming.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | May 31, 2021 5:40 AM |
I don't think Michelle Pfeiffer is that desperate for an Oscar. If she was, she would have picked better roles.
She did seem to do a lot of promo for her last film but nobody was interested.
Jodie Foster seemed interested in getting another nomination. It's been a long time since Nell.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | May 31, 2021 6:01 AM |
Angela Bassett seems kind of bitter that she wasn't the first black woman to win. She criticized Halle Berry and said she turned the part down which the producers denied.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | May 31, 2021 6:03 AM |
Kristen Davis
by Anonymous | reply 39 | May 31, 2021 6:10 AM |
Oprah has an honorary one. Why I don't know. Her contribution to film hasn't exactly been stellar. Was it for humitarian work? If so why be recognized by a film group?
by Anonymous | reply 40 | May 31, 2021 6:14 AM |
Diane Ladd; she's 85 and has a film coming out this year, so maybe she still has a shot, a la Christopher Plummer. But Jim Belushi is in it and she plays "Mama Blanche", so it looks like an outside chance at best.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | May 31, 2021 6:16 AM |
Diane Ladd is delusional. I heard her speak at an event. She was talking about how she and Laura Dern want to do The Glass Menagerie on Broadway.
She didn't seem to realize that Laura is old enough to play the mother.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | May 31, 2021 6:19 AM |
I thought Oprah was given the Irving Thalberg humanitarian award and not an honorary Oscar.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | May 31, 2021 6:26 AM |
That sounds right r43. It still doesn't seem right since she's not really that much a part of the film world. (plus nowadays those award winners don't even get to speak at the ceremonies, just sit in the balcony. It's sort of degrading.) Tyler Perry was allowed since they didn't have the other ceremony this year.

I was hoping this one would do it.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | May 31, 2021 6:31 AM |
Timothee Chalamet is craving one.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | May 31, 2021 6:38 AM |
Ypir desperately wanted an Oscar for her brief role in an 1968 Warhol film. But I guess the fact that she was a supermodel worked against her.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | May 31, 2021 6:42 AM |
I'd have 2 Best Actress Oscars but they are all jealous of my sensuality.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | May 31, 2021 6:44 AM |
Viola at R48, why don't you tell M that her Oscar for [italic] Cunty Thatcher: The Gash That Britain Never Healed From [/italic] was stolen from you and that you deserved it for your brave turn in [italic] Snotty Brats and Snotty Mammies: An Ode to Suffering [/italic]. Just punch her in the face, wrestle her to the ground and walk out of her toilet with the statuette, VD.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | May 31, 2021 7:20 AM |
Angela Bassett just seems like an angry dick. Her comments on Berry’s Oscar? Out of line, really.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | May 31, 2021 8:00 AM |
R50, didn't the makers of [italic] Monster's Ball [/italic] say at one point that Angie was never considered for the Halle Berry role and essentially implied that she had lied about turning down the role?
by Anonymous | reply 51 | May 31, 2021 8:03 AM |
Yes r51.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | May 31, 2021 8:07 AM |
I don't think she's desperate for an Oscar, but she deserves one: Annette Bening.
She was robbed out of the Best Actress Oscar she should have received for "American Beauty."
by Anonymous | reply 53 | May 31, 2021 8:10 AM |
Kate Winslet owns this thread. She whined, and wheedled and bitched and moaned and prostrated herself for years in search of an Oscar. They finally gave the bitch one and it looked like Hollywood was done with her for good, but unfortunately, HBO has resurrected her career.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | May 31, 2021 8:14 AM |
R46: We all know about what a whiny little bitch he gets when things don’t go his way: being cut from Interstellar, the Beautiful Boy snub.

Movie theaters will always be around in some form or another. Marvel and the big studio films need them.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | May 31, 2021 2:01 PM |
R56: China needs them as well.

Jennifer Lopez.

Diane wanted Laura Dern to play the mother, Amanda, while she herself would play the delicate daughter...
