Seattle exodus

I’m sick of the needles, degenerates, eyesore encampments. I was going to move across the lake but then maybe go to Vegas or Tucson for more sun less rain. Tucson is slightly less hot in the summer but I do have fun visiting Vegas and condos are plentiful and affordable but crime is way higher in both than Seattle. Thoughts?

by Anonymousreply 289June 5, 2021 4:12 PM

I also find the geographic setting more attractive in Tucson.

by Anonymousreply 1May 30, 2021 3:33 AM

Arizona is full of crazy MAGA types. They are truly insane and hateful.

by Anonymousreply 2May 30, 2021 3:34 AM

Don’t forget the poopoo

by Anonymousreply 3May 30, 2021 3:39 AM

Keep us posted, OP!

by Anonymousreply 4May 30, 2021 3:44 AM

I'm sick of the douchechill yuppy bros and their trashy douchette girlfriends. Seattle might have a thriving gay scene but the douchebaggery is worse here than in SF. It's almost as bad as LA.

by Anonymousreply 5May 30, 2021 3:45 AM

Try Juneau, Alaska.

by Anonymousreply 6May 30, 2021 3:46 AM

Seattle WASPS, especially the blonde cunts with vocal fry are worse than the homeless in Seattle. I would take needles over Meredith in the yoga pants and a top bun letting her dog shit and piss everywhere.

by Anonymousreply 7May 30, 2021 3:48 AM

Utah. I'm not kidding.

by Anonymousreply 8May 30, 2021 3:51 AM

Both LA and Seattle have an infestation of entitled white yoga chicks who don't clean up after their dogs.

by Anonymousreply 9May 30, 2021 3:52 AM

[quote]Thoughts?

Get a blog.

by Anonymousreply 10May 30, 2021 3:52 AM

When me and my partner retire we are going to buy a plot of land in New Mexico with a reliable well and we are going to build a pueblo type house with a solar/ lithium battery off grid system so we don't have to live around or deal with any cunts!

by Anonymousreply 11May 30, 2021 4:00 AM

You need to get away from the west coast. I grew up in Portland and Seattle. Both are shitholes now. I have lived in Scottsdale, AZ, and visited Vegas many times….both are horrible cities. Arizona is MAGA central. Vegas is the tackiest city in the US, too hot, and is facing major water shortages. What about Denver? Santa Fe?

by Anonymousreply 12May 30, 2021 4:01 AM

Like Obi Wan Kenobi on Tatooine r11!

by Anonymousreply 13May 30, 2021 4:02 AM

I read Tucson is the most liberal city in the SW. Denver I think the snowstorms would suck? That’s one long albeit sunny winter....I liked Santa Fe but also cold winter.

by Anonymousreply 14May 30, 2021 4:10 AM

I'm laughing at you being sick of the homeless and yet, considering going to Vegas.

by Anonymousreply 15May 30, 2021 4:11 AM

Spent a week in Tucson. Loved the quaint neighborhoods and nearby mountains.

by Anonymousreply 16May 30, 2021 4:16 AM

Any city anywhere of any size will attract homeless people.

Try a small flyover city of 2,000. Middle of Indiana maybe.

by Anonymousreply 17May 30, 2021 4:17 AM

[quote] What about Denver? Santa Fe?

Overall lovely, but again, if OP is looking for a place with no homeless people, both of those cities are out.

Anywhere in a 3 or 4 season temperate climate is out.

by Anonymousreply 18May 30, 2021 4:19 AM

Someone mentioned Utah OP. I think you would like it there. Most of the homeless are cast off Mormon boys from the compounds. Maybe you can offer to "mentor" them.

by Anonymousreply 19May 30, 2021 4:22 AM

Why not just pay for therapy to control your hatred of poor people and then you won’t have to move and you’ll be a better person? A long shot I know ;)

by Anonymousreply 20May 30, 2021 4:30 AM

[quote] Maybe you can offer to "mentor" them.

It worked for President Oaks.

by Anonymousreply 21May 30, 2021 4:31 AM

Maybe u are unaware Seattle has the 3rd largest homeless population and it’s the twenty something largest city

by Anonymousreply 22May 30, 2021 4:31 AM

I don’t hate them, I’m scared of them, sick of being asked for cash and hearing gunshots...it’s not just the homeless I also said degenerates like gang banger/drug dealers

by Anonymousreply 23May 30, 2021 4:34 AM

I have a friend who works for Caterpillar who moved to Tuscon - wasn't on his radar but had to move for his job. I've visited a couple times and loved it. BUT that's on a 3-4 day vacation where you don't have to deal with the day-to-day of living there and it can be skewed toward the best of Tuscon. I don't know what it would be like to live there year round - he seems to like it. He's not gay. There were plenty of homeless there.

Won't any big city with decent weather have homeless encampments. Is there a different area of Seattle you could move to?

by Anonymousreply 24May 30, 2021 4:38 AM

R22, lifelong Seattleite here. That may be true today, but it wasn't even five years ago. We have this rabid SJW Socialist -- Kshwama Sawant -- on the City Council who twisted everything into 'Jeff Bezos is Evil and He's Why We Have a Homeless Problem', when in fact the reality is we have a homeless problem because once word got out that ABSOLUTELY NOTHING would be done if you camp, piss, shit on any public property -- including once great city parks, public school grounds, etc., -- then the drug addicts, etc., took that as a BLANKET INVITATION to come to Seattle and do/live wherever you want.

by Anonymousreply 25May 30, 2021 4:42 AM

R23 ‘scared of them’ is just a synonym for hating them. Sigh. I think you’re just scared of strangers. It’s low grade paranoia. You should move to a small town, but you’re gonna be spooked wherever if you can’t move past that issue.

Being asked for cash isn’t like a threat to you, you know? You can just say no. It’s irrational fear driven by media, focusing your fears onto homeless people or black people (you mentioned gang bangers 😂). You’re more likely to be killed by your partner than a homeless person.

by Anonymousreply 26May 30, 2021 4:43 AM

Try Des Moines

by Anonymousreply 27May 30, 2021 4:45 AM

There are going to be homeless people in every city, but Portland and Seattle have many tents and homeless populations set up in residential neighborhoods now. My brother lives near marine drive in Portland, and has a $600k house with a large group of homeless people living in tents 6 blocks away. They go through his trash and recycling at night. He has found needles in his yard. He has a kid. Who wants to live like that? Denver is almost always sunny, and the snow melts very quickly due to the altitude. The snow is the least of the issues here, actually. The city seems very segregated. No city is perfect, but that is Denver’s main flaw, IMO.

by Anonymousreply 28May 30, 2021 4:47 AM

[quote] Seattle exodus

[quote] I’m sick of the needles, degenerates, eyesore encampments.

OP, if you're so sick of things, why don't tweet the Seattle City Council with your concerns? It seems much more productive than anonymous postings of what sounds like faux outrage.

Here's the link, troll. Either tweet or apologize in this thread. You are all talk. Stupid talk.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 29May 30, 2021 4:48 AM

So OP will move to a new city, then vote in the same people that gave him the "needles, degenerates, and eyesore encampments" that he was sick of.

by Anonymousreply 30May 30, 2021 4:48 AM

OP, I didn't see your tweet to the Seattle City Council. Where is it? When are you planning to send it?

You're a big talker. You don't even live in Seattle.

Apologize. Now.

by Anonymousreply 31May 30, 2021 5:02 AM

R28 your brother sounds like a nightmare. 6 blocks! You’re nuts. Why should anyone care that he has a kid?! Your brother is fine, homeless people that have to go through his trash to survive are the ones that need sympathy. In fact, if your brother is throwing out enough trash to support multiple homeless people than he must be a total unsustainable mess. He’s bringing in expedited climate change via his selfishness. X

by Anonymousreply 32May 30, 2021 5:14 AM

^satire i’m hoping

by Anonymousreply 33May 30, 2021 5:21 AM

The best point was made by r26...the media showed people being violently assaulted and I got scared, however my apartment manager got spat in her face by a obviously homeless degenerate. I’m thinking of a town of 4K actually in the eastern part of WA. Just might do it ...all I need is internet and more sun. Denver is now on my radar thanks to you guys here tonight.

by Anonymousreply 34May 30, 2021 5:26 AM

R34 Eastern Washington is shit. The Middle part of WA is Trump country. You're better off moving to Olympia which has that PNW vibe but with fewer homeless.

by Anonymousreply 35May 30, 2021 5:28 AM

It’s insane that Seattle and Portland allow homeless tent cities. San Francisco has the worst homeless problem I have seen. Is Seattle worse than Sf?

by Anonymousreply 36May 30, 2021 5:29 AM

R36 Seattle is probably just as bad as SF when it comes to tent cities. SF has a bigger problem with car windows getting bashed in though. Honestly the tent cities don't bother me that much. The homeless tend to keep to themselves and don't bother me other than one violent incident after living here for a number of years. Despite all the blonde fascist pseudo hippie chicks here, I'd rather live in Seattle than in a Trumper infested shithole like Phoenix.

by Anonymousreply 37May 30, 2021 5:34 AM

[quote] Try a small flyover city of 2,000. Middle of Indiana maybe.

That would be Indianapolis, population 864,000.

by Anonymousreply 38May 30, 2021 5:43 AM

Arizona seems to be the next state that will have a huge influx of transplants. I know of a lot of people heading there. I’ve read Idaho and Utah are also becoming hot destinations. If you can’t/won’t acclimate to a different political environment, ala R12, and want to import the same policies you came from, I’d stay in Washington or go to likeminded places. You really can’t have it both ways.

by Anonymousreply 39May 30, 2021 5:47 AM

Try Coeur d'Alene Idaho. It was good enough for Patty Duke

by Anonymousreply 40May 30, 2021 5:55 AM

Seattle is filled with skinny blonde emaciated looking Lululemon monsters with "Black Lives Matter" signs in the yards of their +$1 million homes who will call the cops if they see a black guy sitting in his car parked outside their house for more than 5 minutes. That is the pervasive attitude in Seattle. Portland is a shithole but Portland is at least fun.

by Anonymousreply 41May 30, 2021 5:55 AM

Coeur d'Alene is full of pick-up driving rednecks and annoying Seattle transplants.

by Anonymousreply 42May 30, 2021 5:57 AM

Portland hasn't been fun in years. Downtown burned last year, and what didn't burn, closed down.

by Anonymousreply 43May 30, 2021 5:58 AM

PS to R43 : someone caught and cooked ducks in the park last weekend.

by Anonymousreply 44May 30, 2021 5:59 AM

Astoria OR is nice, but it's basically a small seaside town full of old people. Just avoid the farmers market on the weekends where all the ancient hippie wannabe fag hags congregate. They WILL approach you if you are outwardly gay and try to kill you with kindness so they can have a gay friend that they can brag to all the other decrepit hag friends about.

by Anonymousreply 45May 30, 2021 6:03 AM

Iowa City.

by Anonymousreply 46May 30, 2021 6:06 AM

Sunnyvale, CA (South Bay)

by Anonymousreply 47May 30, 2021 6:08 AM

OP, Why not move to one of the islands? Vashon?

by Anonymousreply 48May 30, 2021 6:48 AM

OP, I lived in Bellevue, on the Redmond border, very near Lake Sammamish from 1973 to 1989. Have you thought of relocating there?

by Anonymousreply 49May 30, 2021 6:52 AM

Dataloungers will be wandering in the desert til we find a place we can call 'home'.

by Anonymousreply 50May 30, 2021 6:55 AM

I live in a Seattle suburb just across the Lake that starts with B. I rarely venture into the city, Everything I need is available over here. Seattle has never been safe at night. I have lived in every major part of the US except for the southwest. I choose Seattle. Now - stay away!

by Anonymousreply 51May 30, 2021 6:56 AM

Don't go to Vegas...you know the zombies and all and then it getting nuked.

by Anonymousreply 52May 30, 2021 6:58 AM

OP simply has to move to Mercer Island. Their highways have parkland overpasses and traffic booths that block trashy trailers. Plus, they have a floaty bridge.

by Anonymousreply 53May 30, 2021 7:07 AM

Yeah - I lived there also for a while, but you have to go to Bellevue to shop. Or Factoria, where you must mingle with the poors,

by Anonymousreply 54May 30, 2021 7:22 AM

My cousins grew up in Coeur d’Alene. They now live in the area, but in the Washington side of the border, due to lower taxes. Coeur d’Alene has a lot of law enforcement retirees.

by Anonymousreply 55May 30, 2021 8:03 AM

Or you could just blow your brains out and do us all a favor.

by Anonymousreply 56May 30, 2021 8:35 AM

Gary, Indiana

by Anonymousreply 57May 30, 2021 8:59 AM

Vegas is not a great option. The housing stock here is really poor quality. My house is twenty years old and it’s falling apart. A lot of builders skimped on quality during housing booms and some filed for bankruptcy after the class action lawsuits got to be too much. So there’s no accountability.

Apartments are full of people with no ties who are hard partiers and don’t care how loud they are or what they damage. Lots of drugs and pit bulls. Too many people think they’ll stay a year and if they trash everything, who cares, they’ll just leave. The crime is really bad. Constant robberies, car stealing and vandalism, and a lot of predatory people in general just looking to scam or steal. It’s not a normal environment where people have roots, so it attracts scammers. And there’s no breadth of jobs, it’s either casinos, medical or construction. Every recession hits much harder and lasts much longer because the whole economy is built on entertainment and never-ending expansion. My house value dropped 50% after the crash of 2008 and it only recovered the last few years. There were lots of houses underwater, foreclosures and businesses failing because the economy here is too specialized and depends too much on entertainment. The economy dropped like a stone during the pandemic, lots of layoffs and crime increased.

I still drive to LA if I want culture or shopping. I’m not going to be able to drive 350 miles one way forever. Very few mom and pop stores are here and most don’t last long. Everything is geared towards big bland corporate chains. Few museums or cultural events and every entertainment thing costs money and is overpriced. Medical care is awful. The nearest other specialists are LA or Phoenix (Mayo Clinic). Good specialists are in short supply and it can take months or years to get accepted or treated by some specialists. Then your issues are ignored because the doctors are overbooked. There are lots of retired people and it’s really a problem.

I like Tucson myself, but Arizona is going to have real water problems soon because they are down the Colorado River priority line. Lake Mead, which supplies the water to Las Vegas, has been getting lower for decades. Now it’s getting to a pretty serious state. Vegas has done a lot of water conservation efforts over the past couple decades and there’s not a lot more they can do. They’ve been pulling greenery out of public spaces for years, and the increased rock and metal or concrete landscaping and pulling out lawns and fountains has made the heat issue worse. They’ve recently passed a law saying you have to pull lawns out of public spaces, except for golf courses, which are everywhere and take up a lot of water. The water and landscaping situation is becoming, greenery for the rich, bare concrete for the poor.

The heat does wear and tear on your A/C and car battery, tires and hoses. And the hard water with lots of minerals damages the plumbing long term and you have to keep a close eye out for plumbing leaks all the time. House floods are really common here from pipes leaking and breaking.

I’m not sure if the Southwest is sustainable long term because of the water situation and the heat getting worse every year. Vegas is cooler than Phoenix in the summer now a lot of the time. Even in the twenty years I’ve been here it’s gotten noticeably hotter.

What this thread is really about is global warming. People are already relocating due to climate. And some of the places they’re relocating to are cheaper up front, but the standard of living is lower because there’s a lower tax base and less infrastructure. At my age I dread relocating, but I don’t want to be in denial about how hard it’s going to be to continue here. It’s never going to get easier to relocate than now. I don’t want to be ninety years old in an unsustainable city with no water or plants, needing A/C to live. That’s where it’s heading.

If anyone has any info about New Mexico I would like to hear it.

by Anonymousreply 58May 30, 2021 10:35 AM

Let me set the naysayers straight: Seattle is the biggest shithole on the West Coast, hell maybe even in the entire USA or even in all of North America.

I was born and raised in Seattle and have seen it go from nice to bad to worse, to all the way to shitsville that it is today.

There is absolutely nothing redeeming about allowing people to steal, litter, destroy, shoot up, pee, and poop wherever the hell they want with no consequence. Make no mistake, drug dealers everywhere rejoice at the free reign they have in cities like Seattle. Burglars prowl neighborhoods every night stealing whatever isn't nailed down. Sadly, it wasn't like that even 5 years ago. The city government is made up mostly of far-left lunatics wrong continue to roll out the red carpet for anyone who commits a crime. No one is safe there.

OP Tucson is really nice, there are lots of gays, and not everyone is a Republican. It's where my partner will move in 2022.

by Anonymousreply 59May 30, 2021 10:58 AM

Boise, Idaho, OP. According to a friend who just returned from a quick visit, it’s immaculate , no homeless, and a blue island in the red sea of Idaho.

by Anonymousreply 60May 30, 2021 11:00 AM

Would like to know where R26 lives. Some safe suburb whence he can romanticize city life, no doubt.

by Anonymousreply 61May 30, 2021 11:18 AM

What about Corvallis, Oregon or Boise, Idaho?

by Anonymousreply 62May 30, 2021 11:38 AM

[quote] OP, if you're so sick of things, why don't tweet the Seattle City Council with your concerns? It seems much more productive than anonymous postings of what sounds like faux outrage.

[quote] Here's the link, troll. Either tweet or apologize in this thread. You are all talk. Stupid talk.

OP, can you provide the status of your planned tweet to the Seattle City Council? Or apologizing in here for your troll thread?

It looks like you and your internet troll farm minion crew have been churning out another scripted, contrived thread. You all should post this garbage at Parler. They love this kind of shit.

Now, about that tweet. Or the apology. Take your pick and do one or the other. After that, you and your right wing crew need to pack up and leave.

by Anonymousreply 63May 30, 2021 11:40 AM

Boise may be out of reach now for people. Housing prices have surged and locals can’t afford to buy.

by Anonymousreply 64May 30, 2021 12:10 PM

The West Coast seems more screwed that the East.coast which isn’t as progressive. Thank God.

by Anonymousreply 65May 30, 2021 12:22 PM

Palm beach county, FL or the west coast of Florida (Naples, Sarasota).

Palm Beach county is liberal and the West coast is quite lovely

The two downsides: hurricanes and of course the shitty governor.

But, not sure why, but the homeless population isn’t bad at all.

by Anonymousreply 66May 30, 2021 12:33 PM

OP, I hear you. I lived in Seattle for about a year in 2015. I went back last year and I could not believe it. The homeless have taken over. The parks were filled with them. Even the pretty tourist sites like Pioneer Square were covered with them.

I do not hate the homeless, but I hate the elected leaders who do nothing about it. I pay taxes so that I can enjoy a clean and safe city. Why is it that I, who pay to upkeep the city, cannot enjoy it, yet the homeless who contribute nothing are allowed to take it over? Don’t I, who help pay for the parks, have more of a right to it than the homeless who do not?

If the city would have it illegal to camp wherever and shit wherever, then perhaps the problem could be managed. There are enough shelters and even more can be built, but quit allowing degenerates free range of a city that they do not contribute to.

The issue is anywhere with nice weather will attract the homeless. And, most cities are are also run by officials who do nothing about the homeless.

If the weather and nature of the PNW is keeping you there, then move to a smaller town or island like others have suggested. Astoria, OR is great, like others have mentioned. Pulsbo, WA is cute and only a ferry ride away from Seattle. I would move to a smaller town about a two hour drive from the city, on the coast. Close enough that you can drive to and enjoy the city from time to time, but far enough that the homeless won’t take it over.

What I do not understand is why Seattle is like this. I cannot imagine that most of the techies, especially the Indian and Chinese ones, like living like that. Is it because most are not citizens? Because most live in Redmond? Why can’t an Independent run with a socially liberal but clean up the city approach run?

by Anonymousreply 67May 30, 2021 12:36 PM

Downtown Denver is a homeless encampment. It's just awful. And denverites are like your friend who wants you to please tell you she's cool all of the time. Denver is where people go who can't make it in Chicago but want to pretend like they're living in a city instead of a sprawling suburb.

by Anonymousreply 68May 30, 2021 12:40 PM

Seattle has always been a shithole. It burned down, and was rebuilt, it has nearly died (Last one out, turn off the lights!) several times. It is sick in its bones. Same with Portland. They can (try to) gentrify out the seediness all they like, but it will always, always find a way to seep back out.

by Anonymousreply 69May 30, 2021 12:46 PM

R67

Woke voters run the city at present. All this talk about contacting the Seattle City council is a joke, since it is one of the biggest far-left bubbles going. I left for good earlier this year to Florida, which wasn't my first choice but I had an opportunity to relocate there.

I'm completely baffled by the influx of people moving there over the past year, assuming they're deluded fools who feel that things will return to Better Days once the covid restrictions are (largely) gone. City officials, King County officials, and the feckless governor, have no real idea of what they're doing. They've pretty much squandered the tourist potential for the next two or three years minimum.

by Anonymousreply 70May 30, 2021 12:48 PM

Come to Kansas City Missouri OP, we don't have a lot of homeless because it's too cold in the winter and too friggin hot in the summer.

by Anonymousreply 71May 30, 2021 12:53 PM

Is there anywhere in America that doesn't have at homeless vagrants, MAGAts, strip malls, freeways, crime, drug addicts, fundamentalists, pig cops, or Karens?

by Anonymousreply 72May 30, 2021 12:56 PM

Any small towns in New Mexico people can recommend?

by Anonymousreply 73May 30, 2021 1:26 PM

R70 How do you vote now that you moved to FL? Unless you vote Republican, you will essentially be voting to turn FL into what you left.

by Anonymousreply 74May 30, 2021 1:28 PM

Denver has many pluses but the homeless issue is in every corner of downtown.

The problem with Denver and Boulder are that they are intense islands of blue but if you go far enough out to miss a lot of the issues discussed here, you're in hard right we love Cliven Bundy and Focus on the Family areas. There's some weird vibes out there. People would sooner shoot you than shake your hand.

by Anonymousreply 75May 30, 2021 1:39 PM

True r75. But, I think you’re thinking of Colorado Springs, which is an hour from Denver. They areas around Denver proper can be very lovely

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 76May 30, 2021 1:47 PM

R76 I understand that's a farther distance, but my point stands. Even once you get to Centennial and Parker, it's MAGAt central. A few little places like Longmont and Ft Collins are OK, but most towns that AREN'T mega rich mountain resort areas are their own strain of Deliverance.

by Anonymousreply 77May 30, 2021 1:51 PM

OP- Move to New Jersey

by Anonymousreply 78May 30, 2021 1:55 PM

What about Olympia as someone upthread suggested.

I have never been but have heard good things and the rap seems to be that because it is the capital, they've kept the homeless down, so as not to upset the legislators.

You'd still be able to see your old Seattle friends on weekends too.

by Anonymousreply 79May 30, 2021 1:58 PM

Those of you suggesting Tuscon, what are some areas of the city you'd suggest?

by Anonymousreply 80May 30, 2021 2:01 PM

I have registered as a Democrat since this is a closed-primary state, R74.

by Anonymousreply 82May 30, 2021 2:17 PM

Really, everyone should take time to appreciate the many charms of Boulder.

It's not ALL hypodermic needles and pint-sized harlots.

by Anonymousreply 83May 30, 2021 2:32 PM

R66 SOME of Palm Beach county is fine...the wealthy parts; much is also dangerous ghetto [Greenacres, Belle Grade, Palm Springs, almost anywhere west].

by Anonymousreply 84May 30, 2021 2:53 PM

There seem to be no more good, affordable, US cities to live in. It's so depressing. I left NYC after 10 years and have no desire to go back. I was in LA for 15, same thing. My partner likes living in a big city yet complains about the cost, homeless, etc.

We were just in Carmel for a long weekend. It's gorgeous and the year-round temps are my speed - light jacket weather year-round. While there are homeless in Monterey, it's nothing like SF or LA or Sacramento. Driving through 17 mile drive, I had to admit, I can now see the appeal of living in gated communities - which is something I NEVER thought I would say.

However, after mentally preparing myself for battle every time I left my apartment in NYC and LA to deal with crowds, shit, piss, needles on the streets, crazy people, I'm too old for this shit.

by Anonymousreply 85May 30, 2021 3:10 PM

[quote] I pay taxes so that I can enjoy a clean and safe city.

Clearly not enough.

by Anonymousreply 86May 30, 2021 3:32 PM

Obviously the same people in Seattle should give up all public spaces to the insane, drugged, alcoholic and indigent. Quit complaining and pay your taxes guys! More homeless are arriving from other states and Seattle needs the money.

by Anonymousreply 87May 30, 2021 3:49 PM

Vegas or Tuscon? Sounds like you weren't ever a good fit for Seattle if you're considering those places. Vegas really is kind of in the middle of nowehere unless you like the desert.

Seattle has the original skid row (PIoneer Square) and has had ups and downs with the homeless. First time I went there (late 80s), I was amazed at the number of homeless downtown, who mostly seemed like alcoholics. I went there for work in the early '00s and have been back a couple times since then and there seemed to be much less.

You're going to find homeless everywhere---there is even a big problem in rural areas. For work I have travelled to places as different as Morehead, KY, western NC (Franklin and other area W of Asheville), small towns in Oregon on the I-5 corridor, southern Illinois---lots of people are homeless. You really can't escape it. OP reminds me of the brother of one of my sister's friends. He wanted to get away from all the Hispanics in southern California (a lot of people would have said he was white trash, btw). For awhile, he considered Yuma, which is very Hispanic but someone had suggested to him. This guy was pretty gullible. He wound up in Phoenix and is probably still bitching about Hispanics. I suspect OP will move to some sunbelt sprawlburg and complain about the homeless or something else (cheap construction, enormous elevtric bills for the a/c he rarely needed in Seattle).

Move to that Heaven on Earth, the Gaza strip.

by Anonymousreply 89May 30, 2021 4:14 PM

Now they gotta split 'cause Seattle ain't fit

For a kid to grow up in

Let's find a place they say, somewhere far away

With no Blacks, no poop and no gays

by Anonymousreply 90May 30, 2021 4:15 PM

R84 agree for the most part. Wellington and Royal Palm Beach are out ‘west’ and are very nice. Greenacres, Palm springs, Lantana, Hypoluxo have really shitty areas but nice areas too. It kinda reminds me of a Caribbean Island, a lot of shitty sections but nice areas mixed in.

North Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter are very nice too.

Downtown West Palm is very small but nice and has a thriving gay community

I see gated communities becoming more and more common. Westchester County is very nice and little riff-raff, but you pay through the nose in property taxes.

by Anonymousreply 91May 30, 2021 4:15 PM

Please move to Saudi Arabia. They'll love you there, OP.

by Anonymousreply 92May 30, 2021 4:20 PM

*Westchester County, NY

And Boulder, CO is super-expensive and they just had a mass shooting in King Soopers (supermarket). Ten people got gunned down by a crazy fuck with a gun

Guess you’re not safe anywhere

by Anonymousreply 93May 30, 2021 4:22 PM

Move to Florida, OP, you'll fit right in.

by Anonymousreply 94May 30, 2021 4:24 PM

To the ignoramus who keeps saying to tell the city council...puhleese...they take campaign $ from nonprofit groups— LIHI (low income housing institute)for one then do what they want in return which has increased the homeless situation..it I’d increasing 40 some percent yearly!

by Anonymousreply 95May 30, 2021 4:34 PM

R25 - unfortunately, that's been most large cities' approach to the homeless. Basically, completely hands-off which has made everything worse.

Bring back vagrancy laws and enforce them. Don't allow people to sleep, eat, shit wherever they want. It's really that simple.

Homeless is not an acceptable lifestyle choice. Fine if you want to live in the wilderness, but you're just leeching off society when you're doing it in a city.

by Anonymousreply 96May 30, 2021 4:44 PM

Ohmigawd R91! Are you like Tony Woodard or Erna?

You left out Boca, Boynton and DelRey. They have houses there that are to die for. And right near the ocean too. So beautiful you could plotz!

by Anonymousreply 97May 30, 2021 4:44 PM

Shut up r97. Your anti-Semitism is showing

by Anonymousreply 98May 30, 2021 4:49 PM

Matt is back!

by Anonymousreply 99May 30, 2021 4:58 PM

I've just seen a cultured, historic, and beautiful city on Youtube--in color. The streets are wide, clean, and safe. The cafes and restaurants are free of panhandling vagrants outside and rude people spitting on and cursing diners. Nobody is pissing or shitting in public. There are no unruly political demonstrations and police giving racial minorities and crazed junkies beatdowns in public. Everyone is well-dressed, polite, and sober. The roads are free of commuter traffic and road rage. It's just a perfect urban space.

It's Berlin, 1936.

by Anonymousreply 100May 30, 2021 7:02 PM

“Exodus” means more than one person, OP

You thinking about maybe moving does not constitute an exodus.

by Anonymousreply 101May 30, 2021 7:05 PM

R85 off topic but where did you stay in Carmel? Looking for long-weekend recommendations.

by Anonymousreply 102May 30, 2021 7:06 PM

Serious question OP: is it possible for you to move overseas?

Most of East Asia has their homeless under control. Some pan handlers, but none of the crime and public shitting that you dislike. Contrary to what some posters here believe, it is normal to not want your city overtaken by tents and shit.

Try Taipei or Osaka.

by Anonymousreply 103May 30, 2021 7:14 PM

DO NOT move to Idaho if you are gay or a minority. The rednecks are as scary as the ones in the Deep South. I grew up in Seattle, and attended college in Chicago. I drove through Idaho each time I visited my family, and got pulled over and harassed for random bullshit almost every time I passed through that state. I once got pulled over for going 8 over on the freeway, and the cop screamed at me and made me show him what was in my glovebox and trunk. I was 19 and scared as hell, so I let him go through all of my things. I will never forget the evil look in that mans eyes. He hated me for no apparent reason, except for the fact that I am black and gay.

by Anonymousreply 104May 30, 2021 7:52 PM

I grew up in the Seattle of the 60s and 70s and left for good in the 80s for career reasons. Family is still there so I go back a couple of times a year. It has absolutely gone to hell over the last five years between the skyrocketing real estate and the sky rocketing homeless (likely connected). I'll never move back.

by Anonymousreply 105May 30, 2021 7:57 PM

OP is a little bitch. If you hate Seattle so much why don't you do something about it? Volunteer, or work to change it? Oh that's right, you're a lazy cunt. Better move to Idaho with your Nazi brethren. And take your Republican Christian Asshole with you. Exodus cunt.

by Anonymousreply 106May 30, 2021 8:12 PM

A few posters have grazed against the most significant subtext of the discussion, but not quite gotten to connect the dots. The situation is that, places where homeless people don’t live are generally less tolerant populations, and their intolerance will extend to other groups that you may belong to (hint: gays). So go somewhere where there are no homeless people and have fun finding out that they hate you too.

And there’s a lesson here for the gays complaining about homeless people, you’re doing to them what you’d hate to have done to you. The lack of critical thinking is just ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 108May 30, 2021 8:26 PM

The problem is that the vast majority of homeless people are mentally ill, and unless the government starts institutionalizing people again, or starts enforcing where they can sleep, nothing will change.

I am all for affordable housing, and there's a solid group of homeless people fighting poverty, or getting free from addiction, and they all deserve our help. The mentally ill do too, but you cannot have a meaningful exchange of ideas and/or an expression of needs from someone who thinks you're a giant talking hair dryer (as one homeless person on our block used to scream at us daily).

by Anonymousreply 109May 30, 2021 8:50 PM

So R105, you think a city is going to be the same as it was 60 years ago. Right. Let's guess. You look a little different as well.

Ruidoso, NM is a beautiful little town in the southern Sacramento Mountains in New Mexico. It's mainly a tourist town or 2nd home/retiree town for wealthy Texans, so the job market is not the best.

I lived in Seattle for about 5 years and loved it, but the homeless situation is out of hand. The City Council can be non-responsive. I hate the terms woke and virtue signaling but unfortunately that describes the Seattle City council. It may be a reaction to the insanity that was Trump, but he's gone. It's time to deal with reality, which is the drug addicted/mentally ill who make up the majority of homeless people are complaining about.

Olympia has a homeless problem downtown too.

Move to Idaho. You won’t have homeless people. You won’t have woke or virtue signaling. You’ll have nazis. Fine people.

Montana, too. Big sky country .... also Big Nazi country. A dozen Klaverns. You know how good those Nazis are at organizing things and keeping the transportation going. Not that there is an public transport but hey, public transport is socialism. Today is the anniversary of my dad Fred being arrested in the KKK parade in Jamaica Queens in 1927. Fine people.

We’re always having these threads about shitholes where the OP lives and these shitholes are full of drugs and needles and homeless people and poop on the sidewalk and people in tents. Poor OP. Every week it seems he lives in a different shithole city that he longs to escape, having really no reason not to escape, then bringing up random places he could move to. But he never does move to those ramdom places. He just moves to another shithole the following week or month & moans all over again.

by Anonymousreply 122May 30, 2021 10:54 PM

We need to deal with the problems that are causing homelessness on a national level.

In 2018, the 9th circuit court ruled that people can camp on public places if the city/county has no place to shelter them. This ruling applies to the entire west coast. That's why Portland and Seattle saw their cities be taken over by the homeless. Maybe this is what it will take to get the government to start to address the problem.

This is really outrageous that the wealthiest country in the world has so many living in poverty. I spent the 7 years prior to the pandemic travelling for months each year. I did not see anywhere near the amount of homeless or untreated mentally ill in any other 1st world country as I have see throughout the US.

by Anonymousreply 126May 30, 2021 11:03 PM

I have lived in Vegas years ago and it was a fine place to live but there are homeless there as well. OP, is there an American city without the homeless? by Anonymousreply 128May 30, 2021 11:14 PM

R106 What can he do that Seattle doesn’t have. Seattle has a load of social programs to help the homeless. The problem is that they do not do anything to the hoards of homeless who refuse to get help.

by Anonymousreply 130May 30, 2021 11:54 PM

R43, what are you f-ing talking about? Trolling from somewhere on the east coast? Portland downtown was fine when I was there a few days ago and Laurelhurst Park is not a "tent city." Yes, all the cities have problems, big ones. This started in the 90s when the income gap started to widen like an earthquake trench. Nobody cared, least of all those making good money off the gov't, corporations, and catering to the rich. Too late to pretend now it wasn't obvious all along that people were suffering and it was going to get worse.

by Anonymousreply 133May 31, 2021 12:09 AM

R123's post actually answered an important question why the homeless has become such a big issue on the west coast, not in the midwest or in the south, it's not like we don't have big cities or homeless population in those areas.

By the way, Arizona is under jurisdiction of 9th circuit, what happened in Seattle or California could well repeat itself in Tucson too, maybe it should, we should encourage and help the homeless to take over Tucson, that will level the playground, right now GOP is just gloating "the homeless issue in the liberal west coast", time to let them sweat!

OP, what about Seattle suburbs? There must be nearby communities that would be more low key. Trump's incitement definitely got things stirred up and lots of people lost everything in the pandemic. These are still somewhat desperate times for many. Being constantly uncomfortable takes its toll at some point. You should be able to move fairly quickly to a nearby location where you could feel safer.

by Anonymousreply 136May 31, 2021 12:48 AM

R136 everyone keeps skating around the reality that this discomfort with homeless people is mostly aesthetic. OP needs therapy rather than to move house. If your fear is irrational then deal with the fear - if you move something else will pop up. It’s like moving from somewhere because you’re scared of spiders. Lol

RE Seattle's Skid Row. Did you know that the term was originally Skid Road? In the olden days they would skid huge tree logs down to the water front to be loaded on ships. Seattle in the old days had a more hilly terrain. There was regrading over the years (see Denny Regrade) The lumber industry got it start in the PNW.

by Anonymousreply 144May 31, 2021 5:03 AM

I lived in Seattle for 14 years but left in 2014 to move to Florida, where I grew up. Sounds like I got out at the right time. However, as many others have pointed out, there are lots of places to live outside of Seattle. I used to work in Bellevue for a while, but then I had an office in W Seattle and had to travel to Tacoma often. Tacoma isn't that bad. The last year I was there, I helped my mother pack up her house to sell it and she lived in Snohomish, which was a perfectly darling place. Nice microbrews and taverns, lots of young people from the city were moving up there, nice trails and Granite Falls nearby, we'd go up to the mountains all the time. But of course, work is the issue. I was working in Redmond for a bit and would commute from Snohomish and it was about a 45 minute drive but you might not mind.

Also, I lived in Vegas for 7 years, although this was in the 90s. I worked for a housing developer and the amount of fountains and lakes going up in every subdivision was ridiculous. Glad to hear they have changed their outlook on water conservation. I loved the long drives just outside of the city - the desert is beautiful and Red Rock is gorgeous. But living in the city can be a headache and sounds like its only gotten worse.

I moved to Toronto during Trump's last few years and we have homeless here but its not that horrific. There are a lot of shelters nearby and there are tents in the parks, but there are a lot of parks so its not so much a focus. People still manage to take their families and have a good time. It's sad, however, during the worst of the winter, to see people on the streets downtown just lying in the middle of a sidewalk freezing. I feel so bad for them.

by Anonymousreply 145May 31, 2021 5:07 AM

That people cannot see the connection between Buffet and Gates manipulating the laws to make themsevles rich and spread of unemployment and poverty is really a testament to how relentless the right-wing media propaganda campaigns have been in the last thirty years. There are literally millions of people whose careers depend on telling lies for the rich.

by Anonymousreply 146May 31, 2021 6:11 AM

by Anonymousreply 147May 31, 2021 6:16 AM

It's not just the homeless themselves, but that some are mentally ill, "acting out" threatening others. The city looks downright squalid. No tourist is going to want to visit. I've long described life there as dystopian.

The suburbs are becoming an extension of the city. Okay if you can get an expensive condo, or move out beyond Everett. Maybe some of the more decent parts of Tacoma...

by Anonymousreply 148May 31, 2021 12:39 PM

North end of Tacoma is very nice, beautiful old homes.

by Anonymousreply 149May 31, 2021 1:27 PM

by Anonymousreply 150May 31, 2021 1:49 PM

OP, unless you have no other choice due to financial constraints, or conversely, are moving for a significantly higher paying job, please reconsider moving to a red state.

Rd states are really difficult to live in if you’re LGBTQ, or if you’re a POC, and especially if you are either or both of these things, and are also a progressive liberal.

Depending on your level of education, the higher the degree, the harder you’ll find fitting in.

Also, resources are usually limited and service is at the bottom rung of the ladder. This includes hospitals and well trained medical staff.

"Arizona seems to be the next state that will have a huge influx of transplants."

Phoenix area has already had a pretty big wave - a lot from SoCal for the same old, same old reason - considerably cheaper cost of living.

by Anonymousreply 154May 31, 2021 4:30 PM

Many states had passed laws forcing insurance companies to offer policies to everyone, not just good risks. Buffet got most of these laws repealed, so his insurance company could insure only people with two or fewer car accidents and therefore offer cheaper rates. It made him a billionaire, but it left auto insurance too expensive for many. This was libertarian-conservative bullshit from the getgo. and both he and Gates are giant douchebags who have tried to fix American elections so the rich are never taxed and regulated the way they should be. You think Gates hasn't tried to sabotage America antitrust theory? That these guys publicly proclaim they are willing to pay a little more in taxes is just for publicity.

by Anonymousreply 155May 31, 2021 4:31 PM

Tuscon is more laid back than Phoenix and actually cooler (though obviously still hot) even though it's farther south, because it's at a higher elevation. The University of Arizona is located there, so that brings built-in stability. AZ had lower taxes, but as someone upthread said, that can be a tradeoff, though maybe not as big of a deal if you're retired and/or don't have kids in schools or something.

by Anonymousreply 156May 31, 2021 4:51 PM

by Anonymousreply 163May 31, 2021 6:40 PM

R145, I came to Vegas in 2002 and the first five or ten years they were ripping out water fountains left right and center. Some of them were in weird places like a back parking lot. The water district started paying businesses to replace their high water usage fountains and plants with desert landscaping. When I first lived here, there was a big fountain in front that has since been filled in. In a shopping strip mall, there was a big fountain. That’s gone too. Now they have fake lawns that look really real too.

by Anonymousreply 172June 1, 2021 12:02 AM

Yeah, most these homeless MEN are so far gone with drug addiction and/or mental illness, they are not going to be working. They need to bring back SRO housing, of good standards with staff to assist the residents and a mobile mental health team.

I know this to be true as I worked (as a physician) in two large homeless shelters for men in NYC. Our goal was to stabilize them physically and mentally, get them signed up for SSI if they weren't already, and find them subsidized housing.

I had a few patients at these shelters who did work. One had just returned from living in France, and needed a place to stay while he saved up money for an apartment. He had a college degree and worked as a tutor. Another was an Indian national who did side computer jobs (he was a registered sex offender and couldn't find a normal job).

About 20% of the shelter residents were registered sex offenders. They are impossible to place, so they accumulate in the shelters. I was shocked to find out that all these sex offenders were living at the Fort Washington shelter, as the other side of the building is a gym for students of all ages. In fact, on of my sex offender patients got high on drugs and grabbed a tween girl heading to the gym. I wanted to call the police and have him violated, but the shelter director didn't want the bad press.

by Anonymousreply 173June 1, 2021 1:36 AM

R167 well if you live in a city you don’t get to dictate what other people do. Just because you don’t want to look at it doesn’t mean they have to be locked up. Do you understand that? If a bunch of homophobes said that a local gay bar was ruining their day because it upset them to look at should it be shut down? No.

by Anonymousreply 174June 1, 2021 2:40 AM

by Anonymousreply 175June 1, 2021 3:22 AM

by Anonymousreply 179June 1, 2021 3:54 AM

r178 you are so off the mark it isn't even funny. American cities are becoming shitholes, esp. on the west coast. This is not something that should be tolerated.

by Anonymousreply 180June 1, 2021 4:09 AM

American cities have always been shitholes because the states deprive them of sovereignty.

by Anonymousreply 181June 1, 2021 4:13 AM

What was the homeless situation like back in the day - in major cities like LA or NYC or Miami - cities that had vast amounts of "roughness" and lots of income inequality? I have the feeling it wasn't quite as bad. But, there's been a decades long decrease in mental health services, the end of SRO housing, etc. I know that's not the whole story. Plus, since there's the USA has way more people than in, say, 1975 or 1980, there's naturally more homeless.

Did DC ever have a huge homeless issue?

by Anonymousreply 182June 1, 2021 4:40 AM

[R138]

I was just about to put up the KOMO "Seattle Is Dying" video when I saw that you'd already posted it. It explains that the police hands are tied by the local government, and that mental illness and drug use are the two major problems that Seattle is facing, with no fixes in sight..

I was born and raised in Seattle, and it was once a beautiful city. Even Pioneer Square was filled with art galleries (is the Foster White still there?) and fine dining at one time. There was a homeless problem, but not anywhere near what it is today.

I moved from Seattle in the 90s, as I was beginning to watch Seattle change. It's whole vibe of being laid-back was gone. I moved to the northern Oregon coast and have never been happier.

OP, the only way to get around big city problems is to move to a smaller town.

by Anonymousreply 183June 1, 2021 4:45 AM

Why not Hawaii? It's warm and beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 184June 1, 2021 4:48 AM

[quote] fine dining

^^ wtf does this mean to people? Is it a replacement for proper social care? Like where did u move to - The 1920s?

by Anonymousreply 185June 1, 2021 4:55 AM

You have no clue what fine dining is?

by Anonymousreply 186June 1, 2021 5:00 AM

Haha I remember what it reminds me of, Mrs Bennet in Pride&Prejudice when she’s mortifying the daughters boasting about the dining locally “ I know we dine with four and twenty families.” lol - that’s what these ‘fine dining’ posters remind me of. Toe curling.

by Anonymousreply 187June 1, 2021 5:03 AM

Bullshit, r155. Both Gates and Buffett are donating/ have donated the bulk of their wealth. Buffet has been outspoken on the fact that the wealthy don't pay enough in taxes

by Anonymousreply 188June 1, 2021 5:07 AM

R192, you're joking, right?

by Anonymousreply 193June 1, 2021 7:10 AM

R175 Here we go again with your bullshit. Notice how you are the only person in this thread who seems to want to defend the out if control homeless population that the city does nothing about? Because it is bullshit that even YOU don’t believe.

I have a hard time that you really believe in a live and let live city mentality. I bet you are the first queen that throws a hissy fit if your neighbor had a Trump flag so save your shit.

The homeless do not pay taxes. They do not contribute to the city. So no, they do not have the same rights as everyone else. No one has a right to camp wherever the fuck the want or shit wherever they want. If you want that, please open your yard.

I am fine with the city opening shelters. But NOT with the city looking the other way when the homeless set up camp wherever they want.

Would you be okay with me going and taking down their tent? After all, it is in a public space?

by Anonymousreply 194June 1, 2021 10:11 AM

R191 there are plenty of MAGA on Nantucket they are just really wealthy and don’t drive pick up trucks with Trump flags to Cisco Brewery.

by Anonymousreply 195June 1, 2021 10:24 AM

What about Kennebunkport?

by Anonymousreply 196June 1, 2021 10:25 AM

R195 - the wealthy residents tend to be liberal democrats for the most part, or at least what's left of moderate Republicans. MAGAs would be further down socio-economically.

by Anonymousreply 197June 1, 2021 12:24 PM

If old Hollywood movies from the 30s and 40s are anything to go by, vagrants were arrested and did jail time. When they were released they moved on to other places (riding in freight cars or trucks) to repeat the cycle. Otherwise, in cities they evaded the cops by congregating around missions, shelters, and SROs during the day, and headed inside at night.

by Anonymousreply 198June 1, 2021 12:28 PM

by Anonymousreply 199June 1, 2021 12:40 PM

KOMO is the Breitbart of news outlets; it’s owned by Sinclair. I’m surprised anyone who is in Seattle would use that as a source.

If you’d like a homeless equation look at pay increases vs. rent increases since the last Great Recession. Then, look at the credit score required to obtain rent.

If you want to battle homelessness, you’ll have to pay a living wage. You’re not willing to do that, so you run away. Math is hard.

R109 Bullshit. Most homeless choose to be homeless. If you offered them a job they'd have a million excuses. I doubt they are all "mentally ill" either. I knew several homeless white guys who'd bum around town and I would chat w them sometimes. I'd say you do know there's a huge labor shortage in certain areas of town. They'd be like: nah it's ok, I like being homeless. It's what I've always done.

by Anonymousreply 202June 1, 2021 1:44 PM

Only r123 is correct. Funny though that SF is feverishly working toward (and getting close to) being able to house all of their homeless, and thus be able to move them. But as you might imagine, it’s a constantly moving target.

by Anonymousreply 203June 1, 2021 2:26 PM

Many, not-mentally-ill (psychotic) homeless do not want to live by any "rules" that would come along with provided housing if available.

I long considered Seattle since last March as living in a Mad Max dystopia. However, the place was already gasses that way, the problem being accelerated by Covid.

by Anonymousreply 204June 1, 2021 2:26 PM

Dear R194

You and OP are being played by a troll who is just saying shit to rile you up and you are taking the bait every single time.

by Anonymousreply 205June 1, 2021 2:34 PM

Seattleite here. I was walking my dog in upper woodland park three weeks ago and was struck in the back from behind, knocked me down, my dog went berserk. I was able to get up but wind was knocked out of me. Crazy homeless guy screaming at me and had a big piece of wood in his hand. He ran away before I could even get a good look at him. Another guy came to help me and called 911, we waited for 40 mins and police never showed.

Saw a guy stabbed not long ago outside of my 1.9 million home. I say the price of my house because this is happening everywhere, not just in bad neighborhoods. There aren't even "bad neighborhoods" in Seattle proper. It's all just one big thriving cess pool.

by Anonymousreply 206June 1, 2021 2:49 PM

R206 That's hilarious. Like a cartoon. Got knocked behind the head. Homeless punk ran away. Ten days later, police still never showed. Isn't this what all the protesters want? No police.

by Anonymousreply 207June 1, 2021 2:51 PM

R182, in my view (I'm old) the homelessness now is unprecedented. I wasn't around for the Great Depression, but I know that when the rich and corporations were taxed 50-70%, people had homes they could go to and only a few alcoholics were 'on the streets.'

by Anonymousreply 208June 1, 2021 3:08 PM

R206

I was assaulted at random getting off a bus downtown a year ago. Other passengers pretended it never happened. A few years back, a fellow who ran a restaurant near Broadway on Capitol Hill told me of how he witnessed out the store window a couple of Asian (tourists) being mugged by guys who jumped out of a passing car. Again, the police weren't really interested in following up.

I'm wondering how the homeless (and crime) situation will play out as it spreads quickly beyond "tourist areas" to neighborhoods where virtuous voters are directly affected?

by Anonymousreply 209June 1, 2021 3:35 PM

[quote] Would you be okay with me going and taking down their tent?

I’d be fine with you trying it - would be a fun watch I’d say. Speaking of queens and hissy fits.

I don’t think you fundamentally understand public space. 1. You don’t buy your way into it, it’s democratic- as long as homeless people aren’t evading taxes then they’re entitled to access to the same legal degree as you. 2. You can’t take a homeless persons belongings, what are you some scooby doo monster?

The city purposefully won’t set up toilet facilities for homeless people where tenants are set up so losers like you can fixate on their hygiene solution.

I believe in respecting your fellow urbanites - but i also have empathy for those less fortunate than me, and can also give people suffering addiction and mental illness some sympathy - I don’t wish death on them like you do and many other posters. Which is so weird. You know other majority groups focus on gay peoples hygiene and wish death on them sometimes too? That’s what you’re doing 😵‍💫

by Anonymousreply 214June 2, 2021 3:52 AM

R209, I've heard about a dozen stories like this just from my friends. (I'm R206, btw.) Friend of mine was walking into her office last week right by the Lenin statue in Fremont, around 7am, and a guy shoved her down, stood over her and started spitting and screaming at her. Apparently a woman in a car stopped at the light saw the whole thing and got out of her car and started yelling at the guy and he eventually walked away screaming.

Again, called 911 and took them half an hour to respond AND ONLY BECAUSE the woman who called said "A think a woman was just killed."

That's what you have to say now to get any police traction--that there's fear of imminent death.

Also have a friend in a house boat in Eastlake, on Lake Union right off of Furman underneath 99 and a dude jumped around 3pm. Body wasn't picked up until about 11 that night.

My friend who is a King County detective, said that there are NINE responding officers for the entire north Seattle precinct. That's from like Shoreline down to SLU.

It's not just Sawant. Our sheriff sucks ass--she was elected, not appointed (which we voted to change last election), and Constantine has been gunning to drive her out for years.. That woman makes about 400k a year and hasn't done a fucking thing.

by Anonymousreply 215June 2, 2021 6:11 AM

by Anonymousreply 216June 2, 2021 7:21 AM

R212 So invite then to camp in your yard? That is assuming you actually have a home. But, you type poor and probably rent a shitty little apartment or live with your mother.

by Anonymousreply 218June 2, 2021 11:21 AM

I don't know what kind of bubble or dream world you live in, R216?

by Anonymousreply 219June 2, 2021 12:05 PM

Few to no cities are really all that interested in doing anything about their homeless problems. If they were they'd start spending money on solving the problem. Every city in America has plenty of empty and abandoned buildings the cities could buy cheap and turn into housing for the homeless. Instead they want private concerns to provide housing for them. Cities have a problem and are not willing to take an active part in the solution so nothing is going to change.

by Anonymousreply 220June 2, 2021 12:22 PM

Many street people don't want housing provided, if it comes with rules they're required to follow.

by Anonymousreply 221June 2, 2021 12:29 PM

Yes, R221 that's very true, and it's because the majority of people living on the street are mentally ill or drug addicted. It's sad to say, but for those people the decision has to be made for them. Either get off the street when housing is provided, and live with the rules, or leave town, or be arrested and housed in a place you surely would rather not be.

by Anonymousreply 222June 2, 2021 12:38 PM

R222 STFU. That's not true at all, you cretin. Maybe 20% are mentally ill. Most people have addiction problems so that means nothing. Most simply choose to be homeless.

by Anonymousreply 223June 2, 2021 12:40 PM

R223 you have no idea what you're talking about nitwit. Studies have shown that up to 80% of all homeless people are either mentally ill or drug addicts. You'd have to be mentally ill to choose to live on the street like a stray dog over sleeping in a bed with a roof over your head, even if there are rules to live by.

by Anonymousreply 224June 2, 2021 12:47 PM

Studies. Fuck off. I'd sooner trust a "study" written with the blood of your tampon, bitch.

by Anonymousreply 225June 2, 2021 12:54 PM

The federal govt had outlawed safe injection sites and have bled cities dry so they can't afford to build housing.

The American Rescue Plan does have lots of money to build affordable housing so hopefully that will help. It will, however, take years.

Biden must allow safe injection sites so people aren't shooting up in the streets.

by Anonymousreply 226June 2, 2021 12:55 PM

Dealing with the homeless problem is a huge endeavor. Cites and states would have to put a lot of money into drug treatment, social services, and mental health programs -- beyond the obvious housing issues. Even then there would still be homeless, but likely less.

by Anonymousreply 227June 2, 2021 12:59 PM

R227, the GOP tax law sucked billions out of blue state cities to be sent to the red states. It's even harder to pay for all those services.

by Anonymousreply 228June 2, 2021 1:05 PM

R225 is clearly having a mental health episode. I suggest no one engage. I think he might be on the edge

by Anonymousreply 230June 2, 2021 3:28 PM

by Anonymousreply 231June 2, 2021 4:50 PM

R217 we’re talking about public space. If you’re clutching at the “INviTe theM INtO Ur hOUSE1!!!11” argument then you’ve lost. You’re conflating different realms of space and equal access to those. If you don’t understand the terms of what you’re arguing it is better for you to not say anything.

There’s a whole generation of people that think their opinion on everything counts, when they have no knowledge related to the subjects. Le sigh.

by Anonymousreply 232June 2, 2021 5:05 PM

These homeless men used to be able to afford SROs, and could use SSI checks to pay rent. Now with gentrification, there are no more SROs, and thus no affordable housing for those at the bottom rungs.

by Anonymousreply 233June 2, 2021 5:39 PM

Before I left Seattle last year, I had been saying for years that SROs need to be brought back and the state needed to make access to in-patient mental health facilities easier. I do hope things get better, a lot of people seem to be at their breaking point. Hasn’t put a damper on the housing market though...

by Anonymousreply 234June 2, 2021 5:50 PM

OP Here, early this morning a half naked homeless man started yelling my dog was his, he went after me crossing 2 streets for almost two blocks before I told a passerby and he brought me into his hotel lobby where the desk clerk called police. He was a big guy and when cops arrived he left but I was told the cop partner was going to try to talk to him to make sure he would be on his best behavior. I have a new mini schnauzer 4 months and super cute. I can’t wait to move, looking across the lake in Kirkland for a start.

by Anonymousreply 235June 2, 2021 5:53 PM

Question: what would be the capacity of SRO development to really put a dent in the problem? Are we talking 20,000 units? Less? More?

by Anonymousreply 236June 2, 2021 6:07 PM

Too bad we can't live out our happy lives with designer dogs in peace. What is the world coming to? This is why it is important to teach literature to kids--if you'd read Dostoevsky, Conrad, etc., maybe you wouldn't see life as a zero sum game with "normal people" and "losers." I genuinely pity many of the posters on this thread--you all sound like something out of a Flannery O'Connor story.

To the people saying try Astoria, OR, how about stopping? Portland homelessness issues are bleeding into other smaller Oregon towns, with more fragile infrastructure and more seasonal economies. There is quite a homeless situation that was not the case a few years ago.

Also, people looking to escape Porltand issues are moving into smaller towns and driving up prices and making affordable housing almost nonexistent for the year-round local population.

It's creating a vicious cycle. So, I advocate trying to make where you live better, since most of the western coast is in this cycle. Or, for a real adventure try Spokane or the Tri-cities. Liberalize eastern Washington.

by Anonymousreply 263June 4, 2021 12:26 AM

There are more dogs than children in Seattle. The streets are their toilet. All green areas in Seattle are littered with dry spots because dogs piss everywhere. So many people complain about the homeless but the dogs might be just as bad, especially since people in Seattle think Siberian Huskies are appropriate animals to have in a city.

R263, no, not as bad, but proportionally, for a town of 10,000, there are a great deal more homeless people about than there were a few years ago. And it's getting worse, not better, and there is very little homeless support in and around the coast.

by Anonymousreply 266June 4, 2021 5:19 AM

I was researching cities in the Southwest yesterday. It looks like Arizona and Las Vegas have a problem with water because there was some agreement made many years ago about how water from the Colorado River should be distributed, and it’s antiquated, or so they say. The farther you get down the line, the worse it is. So I read about Albuquerque, they also have a water shortage issue. And a lot of people are moving to Utah but they have some water issues too. And so I thought maybe Reno, but it looks like long term they may have issues too. And they get fire smoke from Northern California summer fires and have fire hazards themselves too.

A lot of people are moving to these areas that were never for high populations and there isn’t enough water to support them. So where can you move where there’s actually going to be enough water, and ideally it’s not 200 degrees every day? We’re right in the middle of a heat wave in Las Vegas and it was supposed to be 108 yesterday and 106 today. Isn’t there any place left with moderate weather that’s livable? I’m really worried about what happens in another twenty years. Will it even be practical to live here? Property values are so low here already, it’s really hard to buy elsewhere and property values are going up everywhere else. I’m afraid if I stay much longer, I won’t be able to leave. And people are really unfriendly and distant.

R268 - I was obsessed with Bangor, Maine as a youngster because of Dark Shadows. I wanted to go to the Blue Whale and hang out! If I could free myself of my fear of extreme cold and a long, snowy winter season, I'd be moving to Maine in a heartbeat. There's something about it, in the larger cities/towns, that really appeals to me.

I went to U Maine, located 10 miles north of Bangor. Being a transfer student, they gave me housing in Bangor at the old Dow Air Force Base that was converted into Bangor Community College (next to BGR airport). Stephen King's house with the gates that opened in and out like bat wings was right down the street.

I lived in Seattle for about 8 years in the late 80's to the mid 90's. Weirdest place I've ever lived, including NY, LA and Chicago. There must have been something in the water.

Yeah, drinking coffee while wearing flannel shirts is pretty extreme.

R276

Years ago, the local independent rag ran a piece on the immaturity of men in Seattle. There was such a flood of follow up from local women that they had to do a sequel piece! Gay men the same, if not worse, with Peter Pan syndrome.

Politically it's a dysfunctional mess as there must be total consensus on all issues, otherwise the small number of people who object aren't having their opinions respected. That's how the monorail to Ballard was stopped years ago, which would have really helped with traffic.

This is absolutely true. Portland, too. A lot of bright women in their 30s despairing about their dating/marriage prospects when men their age are stuck in comic book fandom, endless video games, etc.

There's also a strange pride in being socially awkward.

Here's how "dates" are often arranged: " I hang out at such-and-such a bar most evening. Feel free to drop by and say hi."

by Anonymousreply 280June 4, 2021 8:14 PM

R279 Adult women still read YA fiction, stan Twilight, listen to Taylor Swift, and generally act like they're still in middle school. They aren't exactly the paragon of maturity themselves.

by Anonymousreply 281June 4, 2021 8:32 PM

R279 Nothing scummier or more revolting than comic book fans/superhero fans/nerds. I cannot imagine a bigger waste of time or money than gaming, too.

by Anonymousreply 282June 4, 2021 8:51 PM

r274, I grew up in Maine and though I don’t live there now, I love Bangor. It’s such a low key, quirky place. Those winters....but the summers are glorious. r275, that’s a real trip down memory lane...Dow Air Force Base!

No Comicon for YOU, R282!

by Anonymousreply 284June 4, 2021 9:08 PM

Wanting to move around the country just shows you want to escape the human behavior that is making life miserable around the globe (and always has done). I moved out of a huge city because temperatures were going up steadily and I didn't want to fry 8 mos. a year. But every city has big problems. Too many dogs? What about YOUR dog? Too many homeless? Did you protest GE paying no taxes? Do you use one of the big banks? Do you donate to charity? Read "The Tragedy of the Commons." The reason life is unlivable for many is that many want to live so much better than anyone else.

Huh?

Oh, dear.

by Anonymousreply 287June 5, 2021 12:05 AM

"Oh, dear," means you are apostrophizing something and addressing us as "dear." "Oh dear" is an exclamation of dismay complete in itself.

by Anonymousreply 288June 5, 2021 2:12 AM

R285 is correct, although frankly I think Gates and the rest of them are quite miserable.
