Captain Stubbing is no longer your Captain! He has been permanently docked! I liked him on the MTM show. I did not watch the Love Boat, but that show was on for years, until the coke whore and insufferable daughter ruined it.

Betty White was the oldest Golden Girl and outlived them all, she was also the oldest MTM cast member and has outlived them all except for Ed Asner, who is 7 years her junior at 92!

by Anonymousreply 14May 29, 2021 7:23 PM

Gavin and his wife used to eat at the restaurant I owned eons ago. He was just the nicest man.

by Anonymousreply 15May 29, 2021 7:23 PM

I can't find any pictures of him when he was really young. Even in "McHale's Navy" days he was bald. I imagine he had a very hairy chest.

by Anonymousreply 16May 29, 2021 7:28 PM

He had small roles in Compulsion and I Want to Live when he was younger

by Anonymousreply 19May 29, 2021 7:31 PM

R10, I was thinking something similar when watching reruns of "All in the Family" recently. Carroll O'Connor and Jean Stapleton were in their late 40s when that show began. I'm 52, so now I wonder if the young'uns see me the same way I saw Archie and Edith back then--OLD.

Gavin Macleod seemed like such a QUEEN on MTM the way he adored Mary in such a NON sexual way.

by Anonymousreply 21May 29, 2021 7:31 PM

r20 it's crazy that O'Connor and Stapleton were only in the forties back then, as well. 60 year-olds today don't look that rough.

I’m sure Ed will be on Twitter soon saluting yet another dead cast member. I heard Gavin hated the script for the Love Boat, but practicality won out, did it for the cash, and he had a steady paycheck for a show that ran longer than MTM. Fun fact (not so fun for him) he was the only MTM cast member not to be Emmy nominated. Always liked him. He had some truly hilarious moments on MTM, and his affable, paternal personality fit well on TLB.

by Anonymousreply 43May 29, 2021 8:12 PM

I hope no one breaks out in laughter at his funeral service.

by Anonymousreply 44May 29, 2021 8:12 PM

RIP, Gavin. I always thought he was hilarious on MTM. The following is from his obit in THR:

[quote]When he auditioned for the show, “They wanted to see me for Lou Grant. Great part, but I wouldn’t believe myself bring [Mary’s] boss … but I liked this guy Murray Slaughter,” he recalled in a 2003 interview with the Archive of American Television.

[quote]After he told producers he thought he would be better off as Murray, he walked past actor Ed Asner, who was pacing in the hallway before his audition. Asner, of course, got the part of Lou.

It was revealed in a biography I read on Rock Hudson that Macleod's batshit religious crazy wife showed up at Hudson's house one day, and was allowed in by one of the staff, with her witch coven in tow as he was on his death bed and barely conscious to hold a prayer vigil meant to completely heal him. The guy who was Hudson's caretaker and best friend said he walked in on them and decided even though it was weird as fuck he'd let them stay since even though it would do no good it also couldn't hurt. After Hudson died that same pack of witches wanted to come to the house before the body was removed to pray for his resurrection. Hudson's friend told them "thanks but no thanks".

THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW’s cast has had so many recent cast deaths the last couple of years: Mary (2017), Valerie Harper and Georgia Engel (2019), Cloris Leachman and now Gavin (2021).

The last major death before Mary’s was Ted Knight’s way back in 1986.

Very sad to be losing all of these old tv friends I grew up with.

by Anonymousreply 124May 30, 2021 1:42 AM

by Anonymousreply 129May 30, 2021 2:12 AM

He was miscast and awful on "The Love Boat". Trying to squelch his naturally effeminate mannerisms, he played the Captain too stiff and humorless. A turd in the punchbowl. Someone like Caesar Romero would have been great.

As Murray on MTM he was fine- if he had played a wisecracking gay guy. But times being what they were, they gave him a wife (not sure why there were so many people with New York accents in Minneapolis).

by Anonymousreply 130May 30, 2021 2:16 AM

He was definitely gay. In the mid 80’s as AIDS was hitting he had left his wife and was hooking up with a friend of mine in West Hollywood. He was hanging out with new age minister Terry Cole-Whittaker at the time and then her ministry fell apart, he got terrified of getting AIDS and his fucking crazy christian wife had that group of her hags all praying the gay away - so he went back to her. They had a show on TBN for years and looked like the most fucking miserable couple in the world as they talked about keeping Christian marriage together. I felt sad for him and she was a horrible shrew. Actually they got divorced and then he remarried her out of fear of hell and AIDS.

by Anonymousreply 131May 30, 2021 2:22 AM

He played Murray very queeny in the first season of MTM. With his mannerisms and speech patterns, the flames could be seen from space. He seemed to be slightly less queeny by season 2. I wonder if he was told to butch up, even a little, starting with the second season.

by Anonymousreply 132May 30, 2021 2:24 AM

"Captain Stubing was a big ol' queen. Check out this scene. A male stripper (played by Brian Kerwin) tosses his pants at Captain Stubing (2:20 mark). At the 2:40 mark, the captain is actually sniffing them."

And I'm ok with that. Wherever he was on the sexuality continuum, in this clip, he needed a whiff! And he took it!

R131 The tabloids had Gavin & his religious right cohorts going after Rock Hudson & someone else that I can't recall back in the 80s over their sexuality.

Gavin's TBN show with his wife has numerous ex gay shows about the subject on it. They were awful to watch.

So much love on here for a bigoted shithead that did nothing for our community except run, hide, condemn & misinform.

The brave gays who were true to themselves & died in the 80s & 90s from AIDS, gay bashings, etc. must be rolling over in their graves.

by Anonymousreply 148May 30, 2021 6:06 AM

I think most any gay who watched a few eps of 'MTM' and 'The Love Boat' could surmise Gavin had homosexual urges. Captain Stubing served as an innocent dinner escort for the fancypants ladies on board more than Tab Hunter and Rock Hudson combined bearded in their Hollywood heydays.

Btw, the only actor I've ever heard speak ill of him was Dame Joan Collins, when she was forced into guest starring on an ep of 'The Love Boat' by her contract with Aaron Spelling. (All Spelling's actors had to appear on at least one...some did several eps, like Linda Evans.) by Anonymousreply 172May 30, 2021 2:33 PM

Did you know the producers of MTM wanted him to play Lou Grant? And he auditioned for the role. After he did, he said he'd rather play Murray and they let him have that role instead.

by Anonymousreply 173May 30, 2021 2:35 PM

The part of Murray was originally envisioned for Charles Nelson Reilly, and Jack Cassidy was offered the role of Ted Baxter. It would've been a very gay sitcom indeed if that had happened. Perhaps John Amos wouldn't have left.

Walter Matthau said he was playing old men in his 20s, and so on. Archie Bunker was a certain type - working class, overweight , bad teeth, thinning hair - that was perfect for Carroll O'Connor. Betty must've cringed when the GG made fun of her old MTM friends. They got in a dig at Gavin in the ep where Blanche wants plastic surgery, and there were a couple of jokes about Valerie and Sandy Duncan after Valerie's NBC sitcom debacle.

by Anonymousreply 201May 30, 2021 5:52 PM

They also had Bea make a croak about Murder, She Wrote

by Anonymousreply 202May 30, 2021 7:25 PM

Estelle gets one of the Valerie lines, something to the effect of "Now I know how Valerie Harper feels." You can see Rue visibly cringing at that line.

by Anonymousreply 203May 30, 2021 7:29 PM

R201 Valerie narrated Estelle’s Intimate Portrait, so they were obviously friendly (they always had a friend of the celebrity narrate) and if she ever was bothered by the joke she got over it fast.

And Betty really doesn’t seem the type to gaf actually - Bea got hurt/always took jokes personally whereas Betty couldn’t have been more the opposite - I’m sure she figured if people like that can’t take a stupid joke they have no business being in this business to begin with. (They made jokes about Carol Burnett, too)

In the off chance that one of you DLers is feeling especially charitable right now, could you please explain the backstory of the Susan Dey references?

by Anonymousreply 240May 31, 2021 3:29 AM

R240, When her "Partridge Family" brother David Cassidy died in 2017, DL kept waiting for some kind of comment from Susan. We waited in vain. She never said a word publicly. So "Has Susan Dey commented yet?" became a running gag. That's all there is to it.'

"I have sufficient" was a line spoken by DL fave Vivian Vance during a dinner party scene on an episode of "I Love Lucy" when Lucy offered her another serving of something or other. It was a line that could be used in so many situations, and it was, and it continues to be. If anyone else wants to elaborate on this, feel free.

by Anonymousreply 241May 31, 2021 3:43 AM

R241 speaking of Lucy and your charitable nature, could you also please explain the “Lucy wanted to take the role but Gary talked her out of it?”

R250 It’s all just a deep little incestuous vicious circle isn’t it.

by Anonymousreply 251May 31, 2021 6:26 AM

R240. When the Patridge Family's David Cassidy died, there was actually quite a lot of media coverage. A number of family and friends were publicly offering their sympathy and condolences. No only DL, but others in the media wondered if Susan Dey would offer a statement or send a message of condolence via Twitter, but she never did. Of course DL picked up on it, and kept asking when Susan would say something. It turned into a running joke such as "Would you offer your condolences to someone who you worked with for a few years in the 1970s?" But still, it was assumed she could have said something since shows in the '70s had such a nostalgic following. Jokingly, many on DL accused Susan of being a bitch since she went on to star in the big hit of the '80s/'90s, "LA Law." and she wanted to leave her Partridge Family days behind her.

So now when anyone of note or a celebrity dies, the running joke is "Has Susan Dey sent her condolences?"

Were there any glory holes on The Love Boat?

by Anonymousreply 291June 1, 2021 2:31 PM

Ah yes, r291, the blow holes.

by Anonymousreply 292June 1, 2021 2:39 PM

LEGALLY, r289?

Um, no.

by Anonymousreply 293June 1, 2021 2:51 PM

Spelling must've offered the wonderful Shakespearean actor Anthony Andrews a mint to do "The Love Boat" as Lauren Tewes' husband.

by Anonymousreply 294June 1, 2021 2:52 PM

I can't even imagine Joyce and Helen Hayes sitting around the dining room table today shooting the breeze and discussing Match Game or Flo.

John Gabriel and Beverly Sanders are also still alive, if they count.

by Anonymousreply 297June 1, 2021 5:13 PM

R293, Charo changed her birth certificate LEGALLY

"her original Spanish birth certificate and passport, as well as her American naturalization papers, state that her birth date is March 13, 1941. After immigrating to the United States, Charo said that she was born in 1947, then changed it to 1949.[15] In her final change, she asserted in a 1977 court hearing that her passport and naturalization papers were wrong and that her birthdate was January 15, 1951."

He went all Jesus-y Christian later in life, but I've never seen overt homophobia from him, to his credit.

A friend who worked with Joan Hackett said she'd *add* a couple of years so that people would think she looked great for her age.

by Anonymousreply 300June 1, 2021 5:34 PM

LOL, no woman adds years to her age.

by Anonymousreply 301June 1, 2021 5:55 PM

Joan might have said it jokingly, r301...or not.

by Anonymousreply 302June 1, 2021 5:57 PM

[quote]LOL, no woman adds years to her age.

Oh, really?

by Anonymousreply 303June 1, 2021 5:59 PM

R303, she was underage.....no woman over 21 adds years to their age

by Anonymousreply 304June 1, 2021 6:02 PM

R301, Ann Miller, Betty Grable and Linda Darnell did.

by Anonymousreply 305June 1, 2021 6:11 PM

Oh what a circus, oh what a show....

Can’t believe all this mourning and hysterical sorrow for Gavin MacLeod of all people.

by Anonymousreply 306June 1, 2021 6:31 PM

[quote]Can’t believe all this mourning and hysterical sorrow for Gavin MacLeod of all people.

Hell, the new "Arlene Golonka is dead to me" thread is already up to 60 posts. Gavin was in two hit series, one of them considered one of the finest sitcoms ever.. Arlene spent a couple of seasons on "Mayberry R.F.D."

by Anonymousreply 307June 1, 2021 6:36 PM

"Can’t believe all this mourning and hysterical sorrow... "

I must have missed those posts, r306.

by Anonymousreply 308June 1, 2021 6:36 PM

This thread is the DL equivalent of the Chuckles Bites the Dust episode.

by Anonymousreply 309June 1, 2021 6:42 PM

So to sum things up: did Gavin like dick or not?

by Anonymousreply 310June 1, 2021 6:54 PM

^Dick who?

by Anonymousreply 311June 1, 2021 7:03 PM

Susan Dey will not get a WORD of condolence when her time comes, not from THESE lips.

by Anonymousreply 312June 1, 2021 7:21 PM

Jack Cassidy guested on MTM as Ted's brother, so there is that connection. Ms Dey should really comment.

by Anonymousreply 313June 1, 2021 7:33 PM

R306 are you confusing snark with “hysterical sorrow?”

by Anonymousreply 314June 1, 2021 8:09 PM

The episode on MTM when Murray fell in love with Mary showed what a good actor Gavin Macleod was. Mary too.

by Anonymousreply 315June 1, 2021 8:14 PM

r315, it's beyond criminal that Joyce wasn't asked to appear in the Murray loves Mary episode. Her presence would've elevated it from a so-so episode to a iconic episode. Is this again because Mary felt threatened by Joyce?

by Anonymousreply 316June 1, 2021 8:20 PM

[quote]Can’t believe all this mourning and hysterical sorrow

Oh this is nothing compared to the Arlene Golonka thread. It's pandemonium over there.

by Anonymousreply 317June 1, 2021 8:22 PM

That was on the other day, r315. It was, indeed, lovingly handled and lovely.

by Anonymousreply 318June 1, 2021 10:29 PM

Like the callboys handled Gavin’s penis.

by Anonymousreply 319June 1, 2021 11:07 PM

Miss Golonka incited pandemonium her entire career, r317.

by Anonymousreply 320June 2, 2021 12:25 AM

Do you think when Charon pulled up in the boat and Gavin got in he sang “Death! Exciting and new! Come aboard, we’ve been expecting you!”

by Anonymousreply 321June 2, 2021 12:36 AM

R291, Yes. The men's restroom on the Aloha deck, near the barber shop. Very cruisy place.

by Anonymousreply 322June 2, 2021 12:38 AM

Not only was there a glory hole but every Thursday night, post-show, you could find Jack Jones on his knees servicing the guests.

by Anonymousreply 325June 2, 2021 1:19 AM

Of course, ole Captain Schtubeing was a fag, I knew that the first night of my cruise. I had booked a getaway to Puerto Vallarta to get over a bad live taping I did for a CBS Holiday special with Trini Lopez. I was of course feeling a bit frisky so I snuck into the Captain's quarters and presented myself to him spread eagle on his bed. I told that lousy bum that right below my navel was a buffet fit for a Captain. A real seafood feast! So what does he do? He goes straight to the john to puke his guts out. So I knew he wasn't into broads. See, if they go down then they're straight and iffin' they turn away then theys queer. Broadway logic. Pacific Princess my ass!

Still that negro knew how to mix one helluva martini!

Offsite Link

Hogan was a fine actor. RIP. He was in a short-lived prime time soap called "The Secrets of Midland Heights" with Marilyn Jones, who played Rose's daughter Bridget on GG. Betty strikes again.

by Anonymousreply 328June 2, 2021 2:58 AM

Paging Love Boat guest star Joyce DeWitt! A tastefully-worded tribute could kickstart your career's second act. Just an idea.

by Anonymousreply 341June 2, 2021 5:19 PM

Joyce and Ray were the couple everyone in Hollywood wanted to be. However, Joyce had a wandering eye, which landed directly on Stephen Shortridge.

by Anonymousreply 342June 2, 2021 5:23 PM

"Dewitenika" or "Rayce" were Brangelina before Brangelina was even a concept! Ultimately their breakup and Farrah and Ryan took over as THE Hollywood power couple, followed closely by Michael Tucker and Jill Eikenberry.

by Anonymousreply 343June 2, 2021 5:26 PM

Joyce simply couldn't control her lustful desires. Neither could Joyce.

by Anonymousreply 344June 2, 2021 5:38 PM

What about me, bitches? The only Joyce who ever mattered.

by Anonymousreply 345June 2, 2021 5:46 PM

So glad Jack Cassidy wasn’t cast. Ted Knight’s turn as Ted Baxter was classic television in every sense of the word. Today’s toxic programming makes Ted’s flame burn brighter. If there was ever a beacon of professionalism, it was Ted. It’s good to know that during these dark times, we can all go back to WJM newsroom. Good news, and good night!

R347, you may be right. But, Jack Cassidy also made Shirley Jones do poppers and participate in threesomes. Is that any way to treat America’s Favorite Mother?

I’ve been binge watching Mary Tyler Moore and McLeod is one of the biggest queens I’ve seen from that era. He’s Paul Lynde without the smirk.

He was asking the queeniest in an episode with Monte Markham. Markham was sex on a stick in the episode.

by Anonymousreply 370June 7, 2021 9:40 PM

^I’m watching that episode too and yep, he totally queens. And Monte is gorgeous.

by Anonymousreply 371June 8, 2021 2:39 AM

I’m binge watching and realizing how shrill the show is. Horns in the background music and flutes in the music and everybody shouts.

by Anonymousreply 372June 8, 2021 6:26 PM

R130- He did not suppress his HOMOSEXUAL tendencies enough apparently- That episode with the male stripper Captain Stubing/Gavin MacLeod unselfconsciously SNIFFED the strippers jock strap.

by Anonymousreply 373August 21, 2021 12:34 PM
