Hotel Owner Kicks Woman Out Of Hotel, Calls Her "Dumb Democrat"

I'm so conflicted. On the one hand, she is obviously a Karen who got told when she spoke to the manager, on the other hand, the manager is super toxic as hell.

R1, but is she really a Karen if it's a legitimate gripe? I mean a flooding toilet is the responsibility of the manager. She wasn't telling black people they had no business entering an apt building...where they live.

A place can be private property and a public space (where there is no expectation of privacy).

When I was in Egypt, I clogged the toilet at the hotel with TP.

When I called the front desk, they sent up one of the maids. She stuck her hand in the toilet hole and unclogged it.

So this place is in Mackinaw City, MI. The asshole is a member of the family which owns almost all the motels/hotels in the area - hence him knowing he can act like a prick with zero comeback.

The TripAdvisor page for this place is full of bad reviews, plenty long before this incident went viral. The woman in the video posted this review:

I don't think the woman is a Karen at all. She paid to stay in a hotel that doesn't have a toilet that floods the bathroom. It's the guy who escalates everything by calling her a Dumb Democrat.

After reading the reviews on TripAdvisor, it was obvious this place was a shithole long before this story even came out.

That's not saying much for him if he just works as a low wage receptionist and he's likely pushing 40, and can't even do that properly. He's spending more time playing around with his phone on Tinder than even attempting to address the issue. The only reason he got that job was out of nepotism. He would never survive an actual interview in the corporate world.

R39, I agree with you, that was my point. I was legitimately co-owner of a business from 2001 to 2007, and that's precisely why I left there and sold off my shares and got the hell out of there before they went out of business.

My guess is they will keep him on payroll with a cushy salary, it will just be some more behind the scenes roll where he's not facing the customers directly.

There are numerous reviews on trip advisor prior to this woman coming in stating how terrible this hotel is and how obnoxious the manager is. Stop calling her a Karen. Ownership is well aware that manager is terrible and ownership doesnt care, because they have no competition in the area. They are concerned now because they made the news when before it was all yelp and trip advisor reviews. People should just not go to Mackinaw City or just not stay there if they go to Mackinac Island.

I'm betting this hotel is going to have to be renamed/rebranded to avoid being associated with the story. It's clear this guy had no business managing a hotel or working in the hospitality industry in any way, and the owners were just fine with him until it made the news.

I posted this before, but earlier this year, I was talking to a female student (I teach at a university) who had legitimate and serious problems with the behavior of one of her male professors. I encouraged her to talk to the department chair, and she replied, "Well, I don't want to be a Karen ... "

And for the record, toilets can and do overflow when they haven't been flushed. Issues in the water line can make water back up into a toilet and a bathtub or any receptacle that has a drain in the floor. Those pipes are much larger than the pipes leading to sinks.

Lots of complaints in the reviews and the rooms sound disgusting . OTOH, these were from people traveling during a pandemic so they could sightsee (what is blue ice?) and their kids play in a water park. One woman found heroin!!! in her room and the manager said it was a vitamin. No photo unfortunately.

A good manager would have calmly shut off the water, wet-vac'ed the floor, brought up a dehumidifier, then filed a lawsuit against her for damages in small claims court a few days later (after she was gone) if it was clearly her fault and caused permanent damage. His big mistake was to make it PERSONAL.

when I was living in an apartment I was awakened in the middle of the night by a horrible sound. The toilet tank had cracked and broken of its own accord. I lived alone and there was neither man nor beast anywhere near the toilet. I turned the water off, sopped up the water, and notified my landlord the next day. When I told him what had happened, he looked at me like I had three heads. But it was true. I mean, who would actually want to to break a toilet tank?

Shit happens.
