New gay film. Will John Benjamin Hickey show his weiner?
You better hope he doesn’t.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | May 27, 2021 4:56 PM |
Seen all of Eytan Fox's films. Will definitely watch this.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | May 27, 2021 5:15 PM |
Benjamin Hickey seems like he'd be super annoying in person. In fact, most of his characters are super annoying. Yet, I think he's a good actor.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | May 27, 2021 5:28 PM |
Streaming this now on 123moviesca.net. Niv Nissim is beautiful, though his body is not as hot as his face and hair.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | July 29, 2021 12:54 PM |
It's very rare that we get a well acted gay film with an honest to goodness gay actor as the lead so everyone, please, line up to shit all over it.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | July 29, 2021 1:03 PM |
It's available to rent on Amazon Prime.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | July 29, 2021 1:04 PM |
Looks good - not available in England. Oh, well...
by Anonymous | reply 7 | July 29, 2021 1:11 PM |
Streaming in France. R4
by Anonymous | reply 8 | July 29, 2021 1:14 PM |
Sorry, R5, but this is an eldergay's wet dream. Even the most daddy-fixated off the charts hot young top would not be attracted to John Benjamin Hickey, who looks a lot like Wally Cox or Woody Allen, and a good 15 years older than his 57 years, and whose main life skill he imparted was how to fold and organise clothes.
Warning - seriously cringe-y sex scene.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | July 30, 2021 8:41 PM |
Looks terrible!
by Anonymous | reply 10 | July 30, 2021 8:49 PM |
Oh, don't be such a sap, R5. If there's one thing that's truly pathetic it's blind loyalty. Snap out of it, sucker.

The hipster chick singing (cooing) over the entire trailer made it seem even more self precious and insufferable than it obviously is. (I thought that whole hipster chick singing style was over anyway.).
It's basically edging porn for straight women who love seeing guys "fall in love" and gays who want to see a sappy love story. You know the entire story from the precious trailer alone. What's the point in seeing it when it's already so obvious?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | July 30, 2021 8:50 PM |
I'm all for recycling, but . . .

I thought they called it "vagina music".
I loath it too.

I saw it. The young Israeli actor is so incredibly hot - worth seeing the movie for him. And if you’re not in the theater you can just fast forward the scenes without him.
The old white guy is fine - anyone could have played him. The young guy is the whole movie. And he’s gay IRL and has a hot Israeli boyfriend.
There is a scene of him giving another young guy head and that’s hot. The sex scene with the old guy is whatever. Just don’t watch the old guy and focus on the hot one.
I recommend.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | July 30, 2021 8:53 PM |
In addition to a reputation for being insufferable I am sure I remember John Benjamin Hickey as having a huge dick D.W. Griffith's Love! Valium! Compression!
by Anonymous | reply 16 | July 30, 2021 8:56 PM |
R2 and R16
Remember his guest spot on Difficult People? He was a "participator" who went to comedy shows and crowded restaurants and sang along with the crowd.
"I LOVE my pussy!!!!"

JBH is super annoying in that actory way of his, always semi-smiling and looking sad at the same time, and always acting as if he knows so much more about life than the rest of us but only because he knows how the script ends.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | July 30, 2021 9:24 PM |
Posted this before. Back in the early 90s, we connected on one of those phone lines. Decided to meet up at a hole in the wall bar in far west village. Went back to his place. Had fun. Nice guy. Had just moved from texas. Ok weiner. Nothing special. Flat ass. But it was fun. Nice manners. Only later did I put two and two together. Even back then he went by the double name JohnBenjamin.

Did the older man sublet the entire apartment? The trailer makes it look like they are roommates.

I've had a crush on JBH since LVC. My group of friends all agreed I was the Stephen Spinella character and my then bf now husband was JBH.
So I will brook no criticism of my movie husband!

Over the same weekend at a NYC hotel, I shared the elevator with the following three people:
1. George Clooney
2. Julia Roberts
3. John Benjamin Hickey
Guess which one of them was the only one to pull the "I'm too big a celebrity to share an elevator with you shitty mere mortals!" crap in an extremely passive aggressive way?
by Anonymous | reply 28 | July 31, 2021 6:42 PM |
I'm sorry, I'm 47 and I swear I've never heard of "John Benhamin Hickey". I think I recognize his face but some of you are acting like he's some insufferable A-list star. Is he a theater person? Cause I know you theater queens often talk about theater celebrities that way, (even though most people have no idea who they are). Anyway, I'm too lazy to look him up. He seems to have some sex appeal in this trailer, but the perma-smirk and gushingly twee film assures me I'll never see it.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | July 31, 2021 6:54 PM |
R29 Hickey just turned 58 and he looks considerably older. b. 6/25/63 Never heard of him either. R28 mentioned Clooney who's 2 years older than Hickey. And I'm guessing Hickey pulled the celebrity BS.

by Anonymous | reply 31 | August 1, 2021 4:05 AM |

His character was also a published author who was going through some emotional trauma. The hot guy was sympathetic to him. I liked how they didn't dwell on the sex scene. They form this emotional connection and don't have the need to say it was wrong or even define it in any particular way. It may have been a tad unrealistic but I thought it was sweet.
By the way, I tried folding my socks the way the main character does and it works great.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | August 10, 2021 6:35 PM |
^They also bond over being creative types. The main character published a book and Tomer is a filmmaker. He even mentions them possibly working together in the distant future.

R10- I watched it.
meh
by Anonymous | reply 37 | August 10, 2021 6:39 PM |
The young Israeli actor has real screen presence. John Benjamin Hickey isn't a very convincing Jew - or human being for that matter.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | August 10, 2021 6:53 PM |
John Benjamin Hickey does NOT look considerably older than 57, you ludicrous queens. Whatever else you think of him, he looks just fine for someone pushing 60. You bitches are fines one to talk, I'm sure--but you Marys already know that.

I saw it as part of a film festival recently (online). I really enjoyed it. The story unfolds in an interesting way and the development of the friendship unfolds in a believable way. The ending is as much about need as love. I thought it was Fox's best film since Yossi and Jagger.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | August 10, 2021 10:09 PM |
Is it streaming somewhere now?
by Anonymous | reply 42 | August 10, 2021 10:12 PM |
John Hickey showed his dick in Love, Valour, Compassion. It’s quite a nice size.
And he’s a total asshole unless you’re a star or someone he thinks can do something for him.

R40, yes, saying nothing is best in your case.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | August 11, 2021 12:56 AM |
I wish they dropped the sex scene. One of the things I loved about Lost In Translation was that they never had sex. The relationship was about a non sexual connection between people.
This had the same potential, but by resorting to a cliched sex scene, the whole movie cheapens their connection thereby undermining what could it have been about. The scene with the grinder date was appropriate and that should have been enough to bring the main character back to the reality of him being too old for that kind of Tom foolery.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | August 11, 2021 1:25 AM |
R48 I disagree. Both characters were lacking passion in their relationships so when they got together, it felt more meaningful.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | August 11, 2021 1:28 AM |
JBH looks fine in the pic above, but in the film, he does look very aged. Like many thin older white people, he has the kind of papery skin that has little colour and many wrinkles. HD is not his friend.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | August 11, 2021 4:58 AM |
Hinkley is on this season of In Treatment. I had no idea who he was when I started watching. Have to say, he's very good in his role.
Too bad he's a douche in real life.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | August 11, 2021 6:04 AM |
I'm sorry, but Eytan Fox makes terrible movies for morons and this one, unsurprisingly, looks shite.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | August 11, 2021 7:01 AM |
Why on earth was the JBH character having a surrogate child? Sixty is not the ideal age to begin a family, though his husband looked to be about 10 years younger.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | August 11, 2021 7:22 AM |
R53: That ambivalence is part of the plot.......
by Anonymous | reply 54 | August 11, 2021 12:21 PM |
I watched it last night and couldn't engage with it. I get it was subtle but I just couldn't care. JBH seemed nerdy neurotic, the boyfriend in NY seemed worse, the hot Israeli seemed annoying and in your face. So I ff'd alot. I did like the modesty of the ending... something unexpected (in the plot) happened, the two participants seemed to grow some as a result of it, and life moved on quietly and contentedly, which was very real. We've all had things happen where you reflect on it and think 'that was nice'.
I was really disappointed I didn't connect with the whole thing but I just didn't.
Swan Song tonight. Hoping that grabs me.

by Anonymous | reply 56 | August 15, 2021 1:54 PM |
^ Nope. Some butt.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | August 15, 2021 1:55 PM |
I also watched it last night and liked it more than I expected. Hickey was excellent and, as an eldergay, I identified with a lot of what he was feeling. It didn’t feel contrived or false at all. And the ending was satisfying.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | August 15, 2021 2:00 PM |
I thought the dinner scene at the kibbutz where he talks about the baby was effective. The reaction of the Israeli actors was great. I actually teared up. Seemed like watching real people.
Also the last scene in the airport was well done.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | August 15, 2021 10:37 PM |
It felt to me like a long commercial for "Gay Israel". Gee isn't Tel Aviv funky and gay friendly! You can go there and experience it all AND get fucked by AND fall in love with a very cute sweet guy.
And all the hand wringing over having a baby with his BF back home also felt very contrived.
But it had its moments. Hickey did very well with the limited script and the Israeli did have charm. I give it 3*** out of 5.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | August 19, 2021 11:40 AM |
I bet he had to add 'Benjamin' to his name so people wouldn't read it as John Hinckley.

by Anonymous | reply 62 | August 22, 2021 1:45 AM |
Watched it tonight on HBO Max. It was a nice little movie. Some of the scenes were moving. I always hate reading that JBH is an asshole since I like him as an actor and I (still) think he’s handsome.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | October 6, 2021 3:40 AM |
I like the look of the trailer so yeah I'm going to watch it. Gay in Tel Aviv? Hell yeah.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | October 6, 2021 3:56 AM |
I enjoyed it because where the two main characters end up emotionally (especially one of them) just sneaks up on you. And I had no problem looking at Niv Nissim for 90 minutes or so.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | October 6, 2021 7:04 PM |
I met JBH a couple of years ago as he was with another friend of mine......I didn't know who he was or what he did so I asked him about his job and he said he was an actor and that was the extent of discussion of his career.....he was actually a nice guy and I felt kind of bad when I realized he had done some pretty strong stage work and had even been on SATC. I was hoping to catch him in THE INHERITANCE but by the time I saw the show, Tony Goldwyn had taken over (and he was great).......
by Anonymous | reply 66 | October 6, 2021 7:12 PM |
OP, I'm watching this because I ran across it after you posted this. Enjoying it. It's a nice breezy, talky, scenic film. And JBH isn't annoying; I like his character. I like Tomer's earnest, level, at times plaintive communication style.

The two guys playing paddle ball at the beach when JBH's character meets Tomer at the beach - yowzers.

by Anonymous | reply 69 | October 7, 2021 4:20 AM |
R39 JBH is 2 years younger than George Clooney and almost looks old enough to play Clooney's father. My brother is 61 and looks way younger than JBH.

I just finished it and loved it too. I'd kill to have Niv Nissim's hair.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | October 10, 2021 6:00 AM |
I just watched this. Thought it was something of a snore. Hated Hickey's cliche'd, awful character. Niv Nissim is charismatic as hell. Would love to see more from him. I hated that they slept together. It added nothing to the film and I think it diminished both characters.
