Legendary San Francisco comedian Robin Williams completely ad-libbed his 'Friends' cameo

The second best show on NBC's 1990s Must See TV lineup is making a triumphant return tomorrow.

Personal "Seinfeld" allegiances aside, "Friends" was one of the most influential television shows in history, and there are legions of fans excited for HBO Max's "Friends: The Reunion," which premieres tonight at midnight.

Williams and Crystal were never actually written into the script for the season three episode "The One with the Ultimate Fighting Champion." The pair were simply on a neighboring film set and randomly strolled over to the area where "Friends" was shooting. Naturally, the writers of the show jumped at the chance to enlist the pair of A-list comedians and invited them to join in the show's opening scene without giving them any direction.

The improvised bit involves Williams and Crystal crowding onto the couch at the Central Perk cafe alongside the "Friends" cast, then diving into a very personal conversation about Williams' suspicions that his wife is cheating on him. Matt LeBlanc and Courtney Cox reportedly played along with the bit, adding a few ad-libbed lines of their own.

And oh my Gawd, could Matthew Perry BE any skinnier?

I was (and remain) a fan of Friends, but even at the time this cameo was annoying. It hasn’t aged well in reruns either.

The whole thing was to promote the movie [italic]Father's Day[/italic], which (surprise, surprise) happened to be from Warner Bros.

That same studio also gave Kirk Cameron a sitcom. No wait, strike that; they gave him TWO.

This was much more spontaneous.

How is Matthew Perry THIS skinny? Was he on meth? It’s like he’s missing half his face!

The cross-promotion didn't do a damn thing to help the movie. How ironic Billy Crystal got to host the Oscars when some of his worst films are real clunkers.
