She doesn't seem to understand that it's long been a practice to lock up some detergents, especially Tide, because it's become a form of currency in some subcultures. Stores on the east coast started reporting a spate of Tide thefts, some even had pallets stolen from loading docks. For a while people theorized it was used for some kind of drug cooking process, but apparently not.

She does seem incredibly naive, acting like every shoplifter is Jean Valjean.
R16 That's about police cuts though, where police forces don't have the resources to tackle what's classed as lower levels of crime. And let me pre-empt your inevitable response of "but they have enough resources to go after people for tweeting" by pointing out there are 45 different police forces in the UK, each with their own resources and priority issues.

R36 You have misjudged my attitude to shoplifting, I'd probably raise the threshold to £300 ($420).
The staff pilfer way more than all of the shoplifters combined in most stores (or are conspiring with family members to do so).
.
Good luck to all of them
by Anonymous | reply 38 | May 27, 2021 2:56 AM |
Theft = crime = consequences
Cynthia Nixon has enough money to pay the fines and shoplift costs for all of New York's losses, for about two days.
As for R38, please keep your pounds to yourself in every way that is applicable - your claim of staff pilfering to defend non-staff shoplifters make you sound like a fat cunt.

by Anonymous | reply 41 | May 27, 2021 3:06 AM |
R26 R31 The Walgreens closing in San Francisco matter greatly to the people in the neighborhood, especially the elderly and disabled who can't travel far. People now have to go farther to fill their prescriptions, buy basic goods and all other necessities, including food.
Most of the Walgreen's closing are in low-income neighborhoods, so this is affecting POC and immigrants more so than San Franciscans living in middle/high income neighborhoods. I'm not sure how much Walgreen's pays, it may be minimum wage or a bit higher, but the working class people who worked there depended on these jobs.
Please try to see past your own nose.

by Anonymous | reply 43 | May 27, 2021 3:58 AM |
R42 sorry I’m not gonna fall for that sob story. The loss of minimum wage jobs that fuel the cycle of poverty shouldn’t be sad to you if you care about the poor like you claim to (I’m guessing you’re lying). If this model of business isn’t sustainable then another form should come in. Having pharmacists in these kind of shops that sell a bunch of other stuff is unethical business in itself, so hopefully a more sustainable and appropriate business model will rise to the task.
Nobody should be buying their food at a pharmacy, if you can’t see that then idk what hope there is for you.

by Anonymous | reply 47 | May 27, 2021 4:12 AM |
What's even better about her braindead take is that the CVS is locking up the detergent specifically because they know the shoplifters won't be prosecuted. So, it's not just that she doesn't want thieves prosecuted, she thinks for-profit businesses should exist as some sort of charity for lowlifes.

Walgreens was a sustainable business in San Francisco until recently. The pandemic and the uptick in shoplifting has made a huge difference. That a couple of Walgreens have closed is one thing, but seventeen is quite another.

I do care about poor and lower income people, R57. You care about corporations, and are parroting their bs line about ‘providing for their communities’ when all they care about is profit. Otherwise they wouldn’t be closing duh.
These huge corporations destroy communities and provide people with terrible jobs and working conditions and destroy local independent business and culturally degrade the country and you’re gonna sit there and tell me that it’s sad that they’re closing?
Gayle, enough.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | May 27, 2021 4:35 AM |
r60 you know the same applies to local independent businesses, right? and if the mean ol' corporations close, the shoplifters will move full force, which some had always been there, to mom and pops.. which most already closed because of the shutdowns.
this is like the scree from kiddies about caring more about buildings when people riot... who also didn't give a fuck about independent businesses.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | May 27, 2021 4:52 AM |
R60 Listen Rose, stop preaching. I don't particularly care about Walgreens as a corporation, but this is a major chain store in San Francisco. People do depend on these store for every day things, whether we like it or not. Not every neighborhood in San Francisco has a Cliff's Variety or Papenhausen.
It would be lovely if smaller, independent stores opened in places like the Tenderloin or lower Market, but guess what, they can't stay open in places where shoplifting is rampant, because they can't take the loss in revenue. Stores like Walgreens could for a time before the pandemic, but they can't with the double whammy of Prop 47 and the pandemic. When these stores close, there is no other store, chain or independent, to follow.
Whether we like it or not, at this time, mid size chain stores like Walgreens are important in many neighborhoods in San Francisco.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | May 27, 2021 4:55 AM |
I haven't been to San Francisco since 2011. Would I be shocked by the homelessness and lawlessness rampant there now or is it just media hype?
by Anonymous | reply 63 | May 27, 2021 4:57 AM |
R62 you keep on shilling for those ‘major chain stores’ you think are so important. A smaller independent store actually would be able to react quicker to local conditions that a store like Walgreens actually, even though you presume they wouldn’t be able to exist you’re just saying that without even a hint of proof or reason so you’re not to be taken seriously. Listen I get it you love target and base your personality around which supermarket you go to but that doesn’t mean anyone else has to cry tears when a couple of Walgreens shut down sorry.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | May 27, 2021 5:00 AM |
R64, genuine question, how would an independent store deal with it better? CVS and police have said that SF thieves are becoming more violent and are assaulting security officers. Also, 17 Walgreens stores shut down which is a lot more than 'a couple'.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | May 27, 2021 5:09 AM |
R65 chain stores have layout / stock plans and certain ways that the store operates that they have to adhere to. Infexible. Independent stores don’t. They’re more adaptable. I’ll let you connect the dots.
Honestly if every single walgreens store closed tomorrow it would be better for the country so bring it on. The submission by the country to large retail is so depressing. Every single town in this country is like a copy of the next, and that’s down to franchise and national stores having no regulations.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | May 27, 2021 5:13 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 68 | May 27, 2021 5:15 AM |
R64 Your constant need to resort to ad hominems just suggests you have no valid argument to make.
Local people in these communities are protesting the closures of these stores. Doesn't sound like they're happy to see them go, and doesn't sound like the hold out much confidence of an independent business opening up to replace them. And that's without even getting into the higher prices that usually come with independent businesses.

Live in NYC and these people aren't stealing from Duane Reade, Rite Aid, Walgreens, CVS etc... because they are broke, hungry or whatever. They're doing to to resell in the hood, on eBay, CL, to bodegas, etc.....
If you're hungry you don't steal nearly entire case of something, which happens all the time nowadays.
On UES NYPD is stationed outside such stores nearly 24/7, and places still get jacked. Store employees have been told by corporate not to interfere, apprehend or otherwise stop these thieves. OTOH NYPD says making arrests is a waste of their time and efforts. Before they even finish writing up the paperwork perps are back out on streets thanks to NY's new "bail reform" laws. That and coupled with the whole woke, equality and BLM bullshit that district attorneys in all five boroughs now pick and choose what crimes they will prosecute, and low level offenses aren't on that list.
Duane Reade and the others have been closing locations all over city even before pandemic, and that trend has continued. Of the stores that remain open you'll have to look far and wide to find anything open after 11PM or certainly 24/7.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | May 27, 2021 9:19 AM |
R81 So protesting can only happen in person? One community started a petition, saying the local Walgreens was essential. Again, actual local people describing it as essential. Go lecture them on how they should be breaking down chain retail and support independent retail. See how well that goes over. Maybe then you'll learn a little about the real world, rather than suggesting Walgreens should shut down because, what was it, they have a centrally set layout?
by Anonymous | reply 91 | May 27, 2021 9:51 AM |
Why so much hate for Walgreens? Is it bad for them to make a profit? Should they be non-profit? Would that make some of you feel better? If you don't like big corporations, shop at small independent stores. Prices will be significantly higher, so that's something else you can bitch about.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | May 27, 2021 10:11 AM |
R90, you wrote what I was going to, but I’ll add on. There’s been a cop car parked outside the Rite-Aid at Second and 80th many times that I’ve passed by. Literally five feet from the entrance/exit. It’s a 24-hour pharmacy location, so it IS essential; it’s not just a convenience store.
My CVS (near the 6 train at 86th) is now closed at 9:00. The pharmacy hours are ridiculously short. The Best Buy above the 6 train station closes at 7:00! Same with the PC Richards. This is Manhattan, the city that never sleeps.
I talked to the manager at another CVS, who came to a community meeting with NYPD - before the pandemic - and he was absolutely dismayed at how often his store was being burglarized. There’s nothing he can do.

Where do you all keep copying and pasting this dross that huge corporation chains are somehow the saviors of the “poor, elderly and disabled” lol it’s really weird. They’re nothing of the sort. These huge chains are one arm of the system that maintains poverty in certain parts of our cities. And furthermore don’t you people have any independent thinking that stops you from getting teary eyed over the closure of a franchise business? They’re literally only about profit. If they really cared about the communities then they’d stay open or adapt so that they could stay open to service their “poor elderly disabled” customers but they won’t because profitability is their only metric.
In the last 10 years Walgreens has had $35bn in net profit. Why anyone is on here saying that they can’t afford to keep these stores open is just bullshit sorry.

That Rite Aid does not have a 24/7 pharmacy, neither does Duane Reade across street. In fact there isn't a single CVS, DR, RA, Walgreens can think of in city that still has a 24/7 pharmacy. The Duane Reade on 74th and Third across from J.G. Mellon used to have a 24/7 pharmacy (that was my spot), in fact Lenox Hill hospital's ER sent patients there to get scripts filled late/over night. DR stopped that 24/7 pharmacy long time ago, and the store has since closed (about a year or or so ago now).
IIRC there are several problems with 24/7 pharmacies.
One is the shortage of pharmacists which leads to staffing issues. The other problem was (or is) places were being robbed routinely of drugs and anything else thieves could swipe or force staff to hand over. Finally issue was most of those pharmacies just weren't that busy after late evening into overnight. I'd show up sometimes at 1AM and pharmacist was sawing logs (dead asleep).....
That Rite Aid should close overnight like everyone else. Staff say it's nothing but the odd customers but mostly those who steal that come in after 11PM. Them and the group of old ladies that sit in back by (closed) pharmacy reading newspapers and magazines they take from newsstands often using reading glasses off store racks.
The Duane Reade across street on Second at 79th also sees huge shoplifting activity, but they also have been robbed at gunpoint several times. It became such a routine occurrence that NYPD finally started parking outside... They've only begun also switching things up between being in front of Rite Aid as well because that place as mentioned is jacked all the time. I'm not talking about odd bottle of Tide or can of beer, but entire cases or case full of merchandise. One guy left with several bulk packs of beer (at least five or six). The other night it was an entire section of Haagen Daz ice cream. Thieves just came in with laundry bags and began filling them up, then walked out.
Haagen Daz is a big theft item, and again no one is stealing tons of it for personal consumption. Bodegas all over city get large portion of their merchandise as stolen goods. They cannot afford to pay going wholesale prices, and more to point cannot sell such items to their customer base at prices that earn profit. So they turn to black market goods that can be marked up and thus earn a greater profit.

R144 I know all about the elderly and shopping (it's... eccentric alright). They really do like those kind of stores for grabbing a little of everything. Hell, I'm not that close to bigger grocery stores and will grab the odd food items at CVS if I'm already there.
This really does suck for communities. I'm on the outskirts of a well known, wealthy town, and even they have had strughles with stealing lately. Something like this could definitely them closed -- the only pharmacy within 20 min driving for me (I'm disabled and need frequent scripts.)
Like it or not, these corporate stores have become the struggling small businesses of the now, especially to certain communities with less options. I avoid self cash out so people keep jobs. The shoppers know the first name of the pharmacists, cashiers, etc... just because they pay shittier (which should be addressed), doesn't mean there's not real people working behind the counters.
by Anonymous | reply 159 | May 27, 2021 10:48 PM |
Even though I'm not thrilled with how chain stores replaced small businesses, it's getting too late to go back 20/30 yrs, unless there's sudden interest from communities, which idk that there would be -- they're expensive, don't have the variety, and in store shopping in general is declining amongst the younger generations.
I hear a lot of people crying about small businesses but I rarely see anyone bother to shop at them, at least not enough to keep them afloat. It's like the new "support the troops" mantra... meaningless without giving up big stores, stopping online services, etc. Bet you anything the troll/ chain store hater uses the shit out of Amazon, uber, etc., R159.
And troll, a chain shop with a pharmacy isn't better than just a pharmacy. I've utilized both and there's no difference unless you're looking for rare compound mixing that can only be done in person.
by Anonymous | reply 160 | May 27, 2021 10:55 PM |
*** chain pharmacies aren't different than independent pharmacies or going to a "chemist" as you put it. There's only a couple independent ones left around me and I can tell you why -- their hours might as well be the popular bank hours of the 90s. Citizens bank has dominated over smaller banks for that very reason. A lot of these smaller businesses are like that now, where they have unreasonable hours. I don't expect a small business owner to work 24/7, but FFS, a weird, limited schedule is ridiculous.

"I avoid self cash out so people keep jobs. "
What jobs?
Not everyone employed in retail is qualified or whatever to operate cash registers. Back in the day it was called "register trained" and from large department stores like Macy's down to small shops required an added layer of training and background check. Why? Because you're handling money....
You see same thing at supermarkets. Many stock boys or whoever that just work on floors aren't approved to work on cash registers and don't want any part of them anyway.
Every chance get from Home Depot to now Rite Aid use self checkout. My time is valuable and don't have a lifetime to wait in line while the only two or maybe one register is open.
For supermarkets and stores like Rite Aid self check out is best thing since sliced bread. I don't have time to wait ten, twenty or more minutes in line while some middle-aged or older person checks out full shopping cart of goods asking "how much is that?" after each item is scanned. Then comes "isn't this on sale". "why isn't it on sale". After cashier stops ringing things up and goes to find a sale circular lo and behold customer has wrong item, so now this person further holds up line while they go back in search of proper item that is on sale. This or they say "oh, I don't want it....", forcing cashier to void item. That requires a manager to be found and complete transaction.....
Can go into a place, grab what I need, pay by tap and go, and bang, zoom, boom; am out in record time.

The stores could stay, they’re choosing not to, putting profit ahead of the communities they serve, that’s the reality. And posters here are flipping it around and empathizing with the chain stores.
[quote] Like it or not, these corporate stores have become the struggling small businesses of the now

Moving away from two queens and their drama for a moment....
Walgreens, Rite Aid and similar store are having same problems as other retail; customers are increasingly turning to online for shopping, and that includes much of the health/beauty aids, household products and other things these stores sell.
Even back when "drug stores" were largely independently owned many sold same things Walgreens and others today. Hair care, over the counter products, etc.. They also offered services like film developing.
Over years Duane Reade and others expanded to include more groceries, house goods/supplies, hardware, etc.... This worked out well for awhile, but now online is threatening that business model.
For most of these Walgreen sort of stores it is the pharmacy that earns good amount of money. The health/beauty, housewares, groceries, etc.... may hold their own, maybe not. This is one reason after a few decades of rampant expansion Duane Reade, CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, etc.. all have been closing stores lately, and more likely is to come.
And more problems are lurking on the horizon as Amazon is looking to enter yet another market.

Am old enough to remember when only Duane Reade stores were downtown in Wall Street area. If you wanted something you bought it and lugged things home in shopping bags. Then they began expanding further and further northwards in Manhattan, and IIRC to the outer boroughs.
Like Starbucks at first things were good because Duane Reade like Walgreens, etc.. largely killed off small mom and pop or whatever stores (anyone remember Love's Pharmacy stores?).
There was a time in certain parts of Manhattan such as UES, UWS, Village....you couldn't go more than a city block either direction without seeing a Duane Reade store. On UWS they often were within a block or so of each other. That made no sense IMHO and all it did was drive out the little guys.

[quote]Am old enough to remember when only Duane Reade stores were downtown in Wall Street area. If you wanted something you bought it and lugged things home in shopping bags. Then they began expanding further and further northwards in Manhattan, and IIRC to the outer boroughs.
Yup. Their first store was on the corner of Duane and Reade Streets. I guess that's now considered Tribeca. They were the bargain basement drugstore. You'd go there and buy a gallon of shampoo for 99 cents. I learned to not buy chocolate there because they were so cheap they didn't run their air conditioning 24 hours and the chocolate melted. I used to work nights and one time I went in at 3:00 am on a sweltering August night and felt so sorry for the workers because it was obvious the AC was off.
Then Walgreens bought Duane Reade, painted the interiors blinding white, quadrupled the prices on everything, got rid of sections like household items (mops) and toys and enlarged their makeup counter (they were going for the women buyers on a budget. Walgreens also bought Boots The Chemist in the UK. I was surprised they never brought any of their products to the US. Boots used to have a really nice cherry-scented shampoo). But Sephora moved into the NYC market and took away all the budget makeup trade. With KMart failing and NYC refusing to accept WalMart, Target moved in on the household items consumer and Duane Reade and Walgreens are closing stores all over town (Recently saw Astor Place Walgreens has closed. Even NYU students don't want their stuff). I think if they hadn't given so much floor space to makeup, they might still have some stores open.

R168 Ah yes, it's my fault that your posts are incoherent messes. And that you're unable to understand the definition of words. And if you're confused by my posts...well that says more about you than anything else.
And whoever you quoted is right. In that whereas it used to be the local mom and pop stores that a community relied upon, it's now chain stores. And that those chain stores are struggling in the areas where they're needed the most - areas with high concentrations of poor, elderly and disabled people. Note I said stores. The company as a whole may well be profitable, but the individual stores in these areas struggle and are easy candidates for closure when share prices come under pressure. Meanwhile, more wealthy areas are able to support both chains but also more independent retail.
You seem to think that someone stating a fact means they somehow think that's a good thing. Someone can state something which is true and also disagree with it. Of course, I'm not surprised someone like you, who dismisses anything you disagree with as a kind of fake news, would have trouble understanding that.

What a maroon! Rather than calling for government to help poor people, she thinks that private sector companies should just look the other way when people steal from them? You can tell that Sex & the City is on a subscription channel. If this were network tv, the producers of the show and network head would be telling her to shut the fuck up because they would have to sell the show to sponsors who are private sector companies.

I was at Home Depot last week, checking out at the garden center, this guy rolls past me with a cart full of tools, weed whackers, etc... He just ran through the checkout without paying. The cashier yells for him to stop, and she calls security. She said it happens all the time and there's nothing they can do about it...with tears in her eyes. There's no punishment for theft or property crime, something needs to change.

Fully 60% or more of the health/beauty aids, cosmetics, home care, etc.. stuff you see on eBay, CL, Offerup, and other online is stolen merchandise.

Don't understand how people can shoplift much if anything out of that Home Depot on Third Avenue in Bloomberg Building...
Suppose if staff isn't watching it is possible, but since everything is in sub basement level you have to take two escalators or elevator to reach floor where entrance and exits are, but time a thief got up there it would be easy to alert security desk to stop said person.
Bloomingdale's has two way mirrors in ceilings. Many times have seen people who thought they were making a clean get away only to be nabbed just as they reached front door. Bloomies like Macy's Herald Square also has a processing area and jail. Those caught shoplifting are taken "upstairs" to be processed and held until NYPD arrives. Or in some cases simply issued a desk appearance ticket and then escorted out of store. Either way pictures are taken and person must agree never to set foot in store again otherwise will be prosecuted for criminal trespassing.
by Anonymous | reply 198 | May 29, 2021 12:38 AM |
R198 Maybe because Home Depot has a history of firing employees that try to stop shoplifters. If you google it this is but one example.

R199
This actually just happened at a Rite Aid here in NYC. A female cashier attempted to stop a shoplifter and got beaten up in process. She came back from disability leave and few weeks later was terminated for cause; violating Rite Aid policy about not interfering with shoplifters.
Employees at that place told me corporate policy is *NOT* to attempt to stop shoplifters, just try to ascertain what was stolen and document. This is really the policy now all over at Duane Reade, Walgreens, CVS and other such stores. It explains why so much shit just walks out the fucking front door and people come back for more.
Employees are disgusted and really don't even bother even acknowledging anyone is stealing any more. If corporate isn't going to have their backs, it's more than their barely above minimum wage job is worth getting involved. Let Rite Aid, Walgreens, etc.... explain to shareholders why they have so much loss due to shrinkage.

[quote] Employees are disgusted
No they’re not they don’t get paid enough to care.
R200, CVS and rite aid profit was higher in 2020 than 2019, Walgreens was lower. Profits in business are not guaranteed but they all still profited by hundreds of millions of dollars so I’d say the shareholders don’t need to panic. You can panic on their behalf all you want tho ;)
by Anonymous | reply 201 | May 29, 2021 2:01 AM |
CVS doesn't prosecute shoplifters. I don't understand why Nixon is picking on them.
They have a cop car outside the store and if employees see you steal something, the cops stop the thief and ask the person to take out the items and let the person go. I've seen this a few times.

[quote] Get a grip, looney tune. The cashier at Home Depot does not care so much about shoplifting that she was almost crying over it.
The cashier would probably care because she knows that if it continues at a high rate, corporate will use that as a reason to close the store and she will lose her job. People say "but, they have insurance." Yes, they do. But, like any insurance the more claims you make the more you have to pay for insurance. Sooner or later it becomes too expensive to do business at that location. I've seen people justify it by pointing out the company's overall profits. But, that isn't how it is calculated. They determine which stores remain open due to the sells and profits each location provides. At store near my alma mater was always packed and did very well in sales, however it was in an area that would regularly flood during heavy rains. Corporate closed the store because even though it generated high sales the cost of insurance and the losses from flooding became too much to justify keeping it open. They moved a few miles away and while I've never seen them be anywhere near as busy it remains open because I assume that even with the lower sales it requires less cost to do business. They aren't going to keep a location open if loss or shrinkage for that store, just like flooding, etc., makes it unprofitable.

The repeated attempts to justify the thefts using the excuse that the large corporations make huge profits anyway makes me think these posters probably steal where they work and use similar excuses to 'explain' their thieving.

Vincent said that locking away some of the products was for the good of all customers, who did not want to be confronted by empty shelves, pillaged by looters.
'I just want the people out there to know that we try to keep a safe environment, so when people come out to shop there are items on the shelves. Not stolen. And that's what it's all about,' he said.
'We try to keep it safe and be courteous to everyone. Including the people who come in to steal.
'I hope this gets out there.
'This CVS is not about locking down, and not giving to the customers.
'It's about making sure the items are still on the shelves for them to buy.'
The actress and failed New York gubernatorial candidate tweeted on Thursday that she had noticed her local CVS in SoHo had 'started' locking up 'basic items like clothing detergent.'
'As so many families can’t make ends meet right now, I can’t imagine thinking that the way to solve the problem of people stealing basic necessities out of desperation is to prosecute them,' Nixon tweeted.
She was condemned by people who said the solution was not to invite theft. CVS, Walgreens and Duane Reade have been locking up items for years to deter thieves amid a widespread decriminalization of shoplifting.
Nixon was responding to a tweet which pointed out that several Manhattan DA and Mayoral candidates say they would not prosecute shoplifting because it 'criminalizes poverty'.
Critics said her tweet pointed to how irregularly she visited the stores, which have been locking things up since long before the pandemic began.

Manhattan’s Billionaires’ Row will soon feature a men’s homeless shelter smack-bang in the middle of it despite a three-year offensive to halt its creation by members of the city’s elite, the New York Court of Appeals has ruled.
Residents of the city’s priciest street fought tooth and nail to halt Mayor de Blasio’s $60.8 million plan to open a 150-bed men’s shelter in the closed Park Savoy Hotel at 158 W. 58th St., arguing the location would be a dangerous “firetrap” and that crime would inevitably ensue on the ritzy block.

New Yorkers who didn't put up with that nonsense are either dying off, moving away or range between can't be bothered to barely holding their own , and those who are fighting the good last fight, (think Staten Island).
Otherwise in New York City, much of downstate and increasingly Albany things are being driven by woke, left, progressive and socialist democrat policies of the poor and minorities.
Upstate once was a reliable conservative counterweight to liberal downstate, but it's emptying out up there, and what's left is leaning left helped by infusion of those from downstate moving in.....
