Thousands of YouTube comments on Sky News Australia video celebrate BLM activist being shot in head

Sky News Australia’s YouTube channel has published more than 9,000 comments mostly celebrating and mocking the shooting of a Black Lives Matter activist in Britain who is fighting for her life.

The racist and violent comments, which could be described as hate speech, appear below a short video news report uploaded on Monday about the activist Sasha Johnson. Johnson remains in a critical condition after sustaining a gunshot wound to her head in an incident in south London.

“Damn, every once in a while I read something that makes me want to celebrate,” one typical commentator on Sky’s YouTube channel wrote. “Hope she enjoys being a vegetable.”

Another person commented: “When you preach violence this is what you get. Don’t feel sorry for any of these criminals!!”

Former PM Rudd told the media diversity inquiry in February that Rupert Murdoch’s Sky News would radicalise politics in Australia within a decade just as Fox News had undermined democracy in the United States.

This comes as a surprise to who? Everyone’s brave behind a keyboard.

by Anonymousreply 2May 27, 2021 12:40 AM

Maybe much of this ispushback to the original reporting of the shooting implying she was shot in a racist attack rather than as collateral damage by some thug party crashers.

“We know there was an organised party taking place in the back garden of an address in Consort Road. Sasha was among around 30 guests at the party.

“Shortly before 3am, four black males wearing dark clothing have gained entry into the garden through a side entrance and in the ensuing melee a firearm has been discharged, injuring Sasha. The suspects have then fled the garden.

Sky News Australia is a not-so-covert extreme right wing channel. Basically, the antipodean equivalent of OANN. What else would all those bigoted bogans watch?

by Anonymousreply 4May 27, 2021 12:43 AM

R3 are you always an apologist asshole for racists cunts?

by Anonymousreply 5May 27, 2021 12:45 AM

I knew I had R3 blocked for a reason.

by Anonymousreply 6May 27, 2021 12:48 AM

Wasn’t there a thread on here that pretty much consisted of commenters making fun of her being shot? And ppl say this site isn’t full of racist trolls.

by Anonymousreply 7May 27, 2021 1:18 AM

More proof Australians are racist.

by Anonymousreply 8May 28, 2021 8:18 AM

U.K. Police Detain 5 People Over Black Activist Sasha Johnson's Shooting

London's Metropolitan Police force has said Johnson was in the back garden attending the house party when four Black men entered the premises and discharged a firearm, injuring Johnson.

Police said Wednesday they detained five male suspects between the ages of 17 and 28 for other alleged offenses, including possession of drugs and weapons, before all five were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. They remained in police custody.

The police force stressed it was not aware of "any reports of threats made against (Johnson) prior to the incident."

A friend of Johnson's told the BBC earlier this week that gang violence at the party may have led to Johnson getting shot.

R5 and r6 reflect the sanctimonious, insufferable sentiment that is 1. Partly why Trump was elected and 2. Makes sure that the distrustful miasma over this country remains. It's a tragedy when someone is killed, especially a young person, but r9 is also correct that she was a tiresome agitator, and coupled with the very real push at first to label this a targeted assassination on a black rights activist (implicitly, by a person with little-to-no melanin content in his or her skin), the emerging pushback manifesting as racist bigotry is disappointing but not at all surprising.

by Anonymousreply 11May 28, 2021 9:44 AM

Black woman who should have been at home with her kids rather than out partying at 3AM with a bunch a thugs pays the price for her poor behavior/choices. The rest is racist deflection, apology and rationalization.

by Anonymousreply 12May 28, 2021 10:09 AM

I guess have of the DL watches Sky News Australia.

by Anonymousreply 13May 28, 2021 10:11 AM

R13 OR . . . some make decisions independent of being told what to think by Sky News and Twitter.

by Anonymousreply 14May 28, 2021 10:17 AM

Yes, yes R14. Educated, switched on people do. But uneducated, easily influenced and weak dummies don't think for themselves. They are passive consumers.

The problem is exactly what R1 says in that Murdoch (in this case Lachlan Murdoch who is reportedly even meaner and more conservative than his ghoul of a father) is trying to create a wedge politics divide and conquer version of Fox News in Australia with Sky News - specifically with Sky News at Night.

Newscorp are very calculated and crafty in that they pump out Sky News on free to air TV to regional areas where they are likely to attract the largest dummy audiences who will become radicalised and rabidly conservative/hard right wing like Fox News viewers have been.

The rest is history. Kevin Rudd is 100% correct on this. We need a Royal Commission into the imbalance of media ownership in Australia.

by Anonymousreply 15May 28, 2021 10:30 AM

So . . . uh . . . R15 Rudd and his Royal Commish (and you) want to protect the unwashed masses, the useful idiots from themselves? Rather arrogantly fascist, innit?

And while we're on the subject, what's the difference between Sky and Channels 7, 9, 10, SBS, the ABC, etc. etc. etc.?? Ownership? Content? Uhhhhh . . .

by Anonymousreply 16May 28, 2021 10:36 AM

You know exactly what I mean R16.

The Royal Commission will obviously never happen with that homophobic cunt Morrison in office but the crux of the commission would be to investigate Newscorp's unbalanced percentage of ownership on Australian media and the influence it has on our democracy and society. Newscorp own more media than any other media company in Australia.

Anyway - Sky News at Night is on right now R16. Shouldn't you be drooling all over your gunt while you salivate over Rowan Dean's tiny cock and watch him acting out a dry drunk rant session on TV again?

R17 You're another arrogant fascist thinking that you must save the poor, dumb Ockers from themselves. That they should not have the right to think what THEY want, but what YOU want. And for the record, there IS no difference between Sky, Channels 7, 9 10, SBS, ABC, etc. They are all agenda-driven. You simply choose whose agenda you wish to indulge. Exactly like those poor, dumb Ockers.

by Anonymousreply 18May 28, 2021 10:51 AM

Attention, citizens of DL. She got shot by a black men not by the so-called racist making fun of her. As usual your ire is misdirected. Be smarter. Do better.

by Anonymousreply 19May 28, 2021 10:56 AM

I only watch the ABC and very little of it at that.

Their news program has gone downhill since they attempted to slick it up. Leigh Sales has destroyed the 7.30 Report, though at least she is equally rude all of them regardless of which party they belong to. She is hopeless at follow up questions.

I enjoy Hard Quiz and Charlie Pickering's show but it is only on for 3 months of the years. There are a couple of other shows I like.

I stopped watching SBS years ago after the Howard Government white anted it and I never watch 7,9,10. As for Sky News - no thanks. I've seen snippets of it on Media Watch and it looks appalling. Though even Media Watch has been known to air Miss Information - she is very popular.

To be honest the best and only news service that I trust is ABC on-line.

by Anonymousreply 20May 28, 2021 10:59 AM

The issue is the unbalanced percentage of the Australian media market that Newscorp owns and the political influence it wields on Australia and you know [bold]exactly[/bold] what I'm talking about R18.

It needs to be investigated before we turn into the US where Murdoch has inflicted untold political, financial and societal damage.

Now, just fuck off.

by Anonymousreply 21May 28, 2021 10:59 AM

I wouldn't sign Rudd's petition because he was part of the problem. One of the best reports on Rudd's petition I saw was a breakdown of the media laws by all Governments from Hawke onwards.

Fuck Rudd. He had an opportunity to do something and was too self interested at the end of the day (like all previous and current PMs). Just like climate change which he referred to as 'the greatest moral challenge' and then he went to water.

I agree wholeheartedly that the media laws need to be changed but we don't need Royal Commission to tell us that. We need a Government with the backbone to do something about it.

There is nobody of quality at the Federal level of politics to vote for in Australia.

by Anonymousreply 22May 28, 2021 11:06 AM

R21 The issue is you don't like Murdoch. Full stop. The rest is rationalization. It's not like the old days were there were 5 national TV channels. The wealth of media outlets available to Australians makes ludicrous the concept of "unbalanced" and "undue influence". The masses are not as stupid as you arrogantly believe.

by Anonymousreply 23May 28, 2021 11:08 AM
ky News Australia’s YouTube channel has published more than 9,000 comments mostly celebrating and mocking the shooting of a Black Lives Matter activist in Britain who is fighting for her life.

This line confused me.

Surely if they're comments added on YouTube, then YouTube is the publisher, not Sky Australia? Or does the law work differently and organisations have to police their own comments section?

by Anonymousreply 24May 28, 2021 11:22 AM

Facts are facts R23.

I'm absolutely not going to engage in discussion with a right wing troll who is deflecting fact and spinning bullshit. I have better things to do. End of story.

by Anonymousreply 25May 28, 2021 11:31 AM

R25 I understand where you're coming from, and, like you, I'm generally of the view that the average person is either misinformed or has a dumb opinion, but I don't go the next step to "therefore they can't be trusted to figure things out on their own"--not because that's not also a generally true statement, but because any attempts by the (self-appointed) Educated Expert Opinion class to actually influence their poor, naive compatriots, almost always end in disaster.

Example: " there's no prior that masks work" -mainstream media, scientists, Feb-March 2020

It was obvious why they said this, one needed only to glance at the accompanying front page headlines: "massive PPE crunch leaves stressed hospitals without protection, front line workers reusing masks for weeks" The blatant hypocrisy speaks for itself.

So now I don't trust other people AND I don't feel the doctors can be relied on to be 100% honest 100% of the time because we know they were lying for a purpose right off the bat. I do believe the science, but I'm skeptical of the mouthpieces.

by Anonymousreply 26May 28, 2021 11:58 AM

Sky News Australia, as the uploader, has the ability and control over deleting or disallowing comments on their videos. Instead they write letters to google to ask them to do the work for them ? Ridiculous

by Anonymousreply 27May 28, 2021 2:04 PM

Are you new here, R14? You don't think the DL Klavern would put on their white hood-caftans and do a jiggly dance of joy when a BLM activist gets shot? Saying she had it coming? Of course they would. Because they, and I expect you, are assholes.

by Anonymousreply 28May 28, 2021 5:24 PM

[post redacted because independent.co.uk thinks that links to their ridiculous rag are a bad thing. Somebody might want to tell them how the internet works. Or not. We don't really care. by Anonymousreply 30April 13, 2022 10:01 PM

Thank God the Brits didn't allow Murdoch to buy up SkyNews UK. It remains a reasonable news source.

by Anonymousreply 31April 13, 2022 10:02 PM

[R5] this from the fucktard who posted thousands of comments wishing for Trump's death...

by Anonymousreply 32April 13, 2022 10:05 PM

Oh yes, how dare she, a 28 year old mother let her hair down and party once in a while, for that she deserves to be shot.

R12 has never heard of baby-sitters.

And no-one said she was with 'thugs' that's just part of your wild prejudiced imagination. The truth remains that she was an activist with a controversial group, and it is reasonable to believe that it's the reason she was attacked. So who is really deflecting here?

by Anonymousreply 33April 13, 2022 10:09 PM

33- You haven't actually read who has been arrested charged for shooting Sasha Johnson, have you? And you don't know her "street" story very well, do you?

by Anonymousreply 34April 13, 2022 10:27 PM

This year-old story over 3 continents is too garbled to be understood.

by Anonymousreply 35April 13, 2022 10:35 PM

This black British woman was shot in the head by some black men? That's Tuesday in America.

by Anonymousreply 36April 13, 2022 10:36 PM

The charges against all four suspects were eventually dropped shortly before the trial was due. The police said there was a "wall of silence" impeding their efforts to collect evidence. It was irresponsible of Diane Abbott to make the knee-jerk suggestion that the attack was due to Sasha's BLM links. I hope she ultimately makes some sort of recovery.

by Anonymousreply 37April 13, 2022 10:49 PM

Why is the police department getting involved in people joking about some woman shot?

by Anonymousreply 38April 13, 2022 10:51 PM

Never mind, police officers were suspected as being part of the group. That web site is behind a paywall.

by Anonymousreply 39April 13, 2022 10:52 PM

Sky News has a huge online following in the U.S. so a lot of those comments would be coming from the usual (troll army) suspects.

It become popular with deplorables after the election because they felt that Fox News had softened it's hard-right agenda. As if!

by Anonymousreply 40April 13, 2022 10:57 PM
police officers were suspected as being part of the group

Well then, its even more puzzling that not one witness at the party would cooperate. You would think they would want to help find her attackers. That "fact" would energize the whole movement. So, why the silence?

by Anonymousreply 41April 13, 2022 11:24 PM
lot of those comments would be coming from the usual (troll army) suspects.

In that case we must discuss them endlessly. Normal people would ignore them.
