JEM songs

They're all great. The Misfits had great tunes too.

If they made a Jem movie in the 80s. Whitney Houston totally could have played Shana.

Why is Jem singing about “my lover” and making love in a kids’ cartoon?!? That would never fly today.

by Anonymousreply 2January 30, 2022 9:12 PM

The production quality of those songs was surprisingly good for a kid's tv show of that era (most stations were not broadcasting in stereo yet).

I loved it as a gayling

Jem and Barbie and The Rockers had really good pop and dance-rock songs. Way better than they had any right to be.

I love how 80s and early 90s American animation is so anime-like due to studios outsourcing to Japanese studios. Thundercats, Dennis the Menace, Care Bears, Inspector Gadget, GI Joe and Swat Kats all have anime characteristics like the thin outlines, the use of shading and choreographed action scenes. Then in by the late 90s, they started outsourcing to South Korea as cheaper option.

Jem's character designs with big, colorful hair and the whole concept of a young woman transforming into a heroine persona is something out of a stereotypical 80s and 90s anime.

My favorite Jem song is a Misfits song "It Takes a Lot". I can still sing lyrics to this song. I fucking love it to this day!!!

I hated how jealous The Misfits were because their songs WERE better. They wasted so much time sabotaging Jem and Them when they should have concentrated on the music.

Pizzazz would have been a boss if she weren't so insecure.

The Stingers had a few bops. I always believed that Riot used the power of hypnosis to get all those chicks to follow him. Even Jem swooned a few times. They tried to rehab his image by showing his bad relationship with his dad, but I never trusted him.

I hated Jem and loved Barbie and got mad and cried when my grandma bought me one of the Jem dolls for my birthday. But now I listen to some of those songs and yeah, they weren't too bad.

Britta Phillips, the singing voice of JEM, sure had quite the range.

JEM had so many bops:

Come On In, The Water's Fine

Glitter and Gold

Jam, All Night Long

Here Comes Trouble

Nightmare

Only The Beginning

Back In Shape

Agreed R18, great voice. Reminds me a little of Carly Rae Jepson. Also, I'm laughing at how hard the Twitterati would destroy that video for its white saviourness.

by Anonymousreply 23January 31, 2022 12:02 AM

Apparently none of these songs got a proper commercial release. Fans have took up the effort of uploading and remastering the audio.

R13/R22 the fact that Kimber & Stormer are a legit lesbian couple in the reboot/update comics😔🙏

[quote] I hated how jealous The Misfits were because their songs WERE better. They wasted so much time sabotaging Jem and Them when they should have concentrated on the music. Pizzazz would have been a boss if she weren't so insecure.

Pizzazz was obsessed with Jem and wanted to be with her change my mind!

In both the show & the comics, Pizzazz explicitly says she is upset about Jem dating Riot, and when called on why this is she only gives a fumbling flimsy excuse about conspiracy to ruin her band (Pizzazz is smart, so her saying something this dumb and transparent is weird). Sounds very....hmm...fruity🌟

Then there’s the way over half of the Misfit songs (sung by Pizzazz of course) ever get to hear seem to be exclusively about Jem/Jerrica, and how annoying it is that she’s so perfect and talented and lucky and beautiful.

And then there’s the way Pizzazz hit the roof when she found out about Stormer loving Kimber, when the rest of the Misfits didn’t really care that much. Smacks of internalised homophobia clearly,

So basically Pizzazz was so infatuated and desperate for Jem’s attention that she tanked her own music career and that of her friends. Thanks, Synergy!

R13 It is one thing to lez out in college, or in prison, or after a few jägerbombs. But it is another thing altogether to dive for catfish in Ani Difranco lake in the broad sober daylight. You don’t know the consequences.

Misfits singing You Oughtta See The View From Here where they encounter the Abominable Snowman and he instantly falls madly in love with Pizzazz.

R38 weird, I don't remember that plot happening.

It seems really out-of-character for Pizzazz to go out of her way to help anyone. Guess she figured there was good PR in it.

Do you think they made the Misfits looks like trannies on purpose?

R43 they were so heavy-handed with the design & VA for The Stingers. Like did we mention they're super Aryan.

by Anonymousreply 44February 21, 2023 9:07 PM

Many of the songs were pretty good. More than it should have been considering it was a low budget show intended to mainly be promotion for the action figures. Better than a lot of todays "music." I think I slightly prefer The Misfits to Jem though. Their songs were a lot of fun.

by Anonymousreply 45February 21, 2023 10:57 PM

They should reboot it on Amazon and market it to original fans and an older audience overall. Western adult animation is huge now with stuff like Castlevania, Invincible, Young Justice and Archer.

by Anonymousreply 46February 21, 2023 11:24 PM

'Love's Not Easy' was the best slow ballad on Jem. The wistful minor melody really moves me.

R46 if Jem were rebooted today, it would probably end up being anime-fied or Cartoon Network-ified, and lose the charm it had.

I didn't read the Jem comic book because the character designs were really unattractive. Jem's appeal was they were gorgeous and tall stylish 1980s rock stars. The comic looked too much like Steven Universe mixed with Tenchi Muyo of something. Sailor Moon's reboot kept the girls gorgeous and thin like the original manga artist intended. They are meant to aspirational. Also Jem was diverse. Shana was a dark skinned black woman who looked like Whitney Houston, Aja was East Asian and Raya was a brown skinned Latina. All were beautifully designed. Contrary to popular belief, people of color prefer to see a beautiful depiction of themselves. And why not show people with disabilities like blindness or in wheelchairs? It's always obese people. And while I am not against including gay, lesbian, bi, androgynous and trans characters. Just don't make it their entire personality. You don't need to retcon characters to make them gay either. Just like changing races, it's offensive and lazy. The Jem movie pissed people off because they made Shana biracial rather than fully black.

The singing voice of Starlight orphan Ba Nee was future out gay musician Ari Gold, who passed away in 2021. This song used to reduce me to a weepy mess 😭

Normally, I would agree--tokenism is highly offensive, condescending and pandering.

However, in the case of Kimber/Stormer in JATH, the original really presented them as coded lesbians. It makes sense for them.

The Misfits were better.

by Anonymousreply 59February 27, 2023 8:20 PM

R53 for me, a big impediment to The Stingers being likeable is that a man was singing and seemed to be the leading member.

'Jem' as a show was appealing to girl viewers--and was revolutionary for its time--because it was so female-centric and dominated as a story, all about the experience and lives and viewpoint of exclusively women, with men only there as supporting background characters or inspiration. When we started hearing all about Riot's manful angst and woes and backstory, it felt like it was an interloping voice in a space meant for females.

The Stingers would have been better if Riot was still there but as a supporting musician, say a quiet guitarist or drummer. Rapture would have made an interesting counterpoint lead singer to Jem & Pizzazz, a shy and sad yet still glamorous beautiful singer.

by Anonymousreply 60February 27, 2023 8:25 PM

‘Beat This’ is one of the best Holograms numbers, because for once we get to see swagger from the girls about their abilities. A lot of their other songs can come across as preachy, humblebragging or drippy, but in this one they were pushed to act like rockstars with fat healthy egos, and they delivered.

Barbie's "Shy Boy" is like Paula Abdul, but with talent.

And "Shangri-la" is a major ripoff of 'Kiss Me Deadly' by Lita Ford.
