Everyday Bar Soap

I just got a 4 pack of Unilever Made in Germany DOVE Beauty Creme bar soap. It doesn't smell as nice as I remember. The perfume is maybe about the same - but the ingredients have changed a lot? Does not "cream my skin".

I'm looking for great smelling bar soap - a mass market brand. What do you suggest?

Dove will dry you out like no other

R1 oh yeah? What's a good bar then?

They finally ran out of Holocaust cremains and had to switch to snythetic Jew.

by Anonymousreply 3May 26, 2021 3:04 PM

Though I prefer bar soap (seems to give you that "clean" feeling) I switched to liquid soap a while ago. I was done with trying to clean the soap scum from the shower doors.

Well I'm trying to switch back and I would like ordinary "classic" soap. I know some specialty, lux, and hippy favorites but I was wondering if the supermarket has an ordinary one that's great.

by Anonymousreply 6May 26, 2021 3:10 PM

R6 no

It's not as easy to find as some other brands, but I like Kirk's soaps.

Thanks I'll try Kirks - the ingredients list is quite short and calming.

by Anonymousreply 9May 26, 2021 3:27 PM

I like Safeguard, but they changed the scent as well and it was better before.

by Anonymousreply 10May 26, 2021 3:28 PM

Trader Joe’s

by Anonymousreply 13May 26, 2021 3:50 PM

Made in Germany?

Not China?!

Shocked!

I use Zest most of the time. Sometimes Dial or Irish Spring depending on what's on sale. They are for cleansing, not "lotioning."

I only use liquid soap for handwashing.

by Anonymousreply 14May 26, 2021 4:11 PM

I make my own. Don't need no fancy store bought soap.

For a great smell, I like Yardley London's "Sparkling Mandarin & Ginger" (with orange oil).

I get it at the 99 Cents Only Store.

It says "Limited Edition" on the box, but it's been available for awhile now.

by Anonymousreply 16May 26, 2021 8:20 PM

The price of the Yardley? 99C? Yardley is over 5 bucks a bar in Switzerland. :(

by Anonymousreply 17May 26, 2021 8:35 PM

I like White Dove, White Safeguard (is drying-- good for summer or when skin is oily), original Caress and the occasional Irish Spring Moisture Blast.

by Anonymousreply 18May 26, 2021 8:41 PM

I'd make sure the 99 cent version isn't Yerdley Londen's "Sparkling Mandarin & Ginger.

by Anonymousreply 19May 26, 2021 8:41 PM

^$5.66 a bar on Amazon. Hmmm.

by Anonymousreply 20May 26, 2021 8:45 PM

My personal preference is the Dove for Men "Minerals and Sage" scent, but it's hard to find. They also sell spray anti-perspirant, stick anti-perspirant, shampoo, and body wash in the same scent. I hate wearing conflicting scents, so it's nice to be able to have the same scent for all of the products you use.

I like OPs commercial. After all, who doesn’t want to get creamed?

by Anonymousreply 22May 26, 2021 9:04 PM

R17 Yes. Yardley is almost always at my 99 Cent Only Store ... for 99 cents.

I regularly see quite a few of their soaps. Besides the one already mentioned, I also like their Lemon Verbena. The English Rose and English Lavender aren't for me (too femme). I also wasn't a fan of the Charcoal when I tried it. I've also see their Oatmeal & Almond, Creamy Coconut, Cocoa Butter, and Aloe & Avocado.

by Anonymousreply 23May 26, 2021 9:12 PM

I checked on the website and it says the nearest 99 cents only store is Plano Tx. I live in NJ.

by Anonymousreply 24May 26, 2021 9:14 PM

Well you're getting a bargain!

Some of the Irish Spring commercials have the worst fake Irish accents. This one isn't the worst example, posting it for the blond's hot chest.

Camay. Nine bars for $11.70

I don't know why you would want to buy a mass market soap, most of them are very drying. I like Pre de Provence as my daily soap. I did recently make a match of 100% Shea Butter soap with a 20% superfat. That should be nice, but it needs another 6 weeks of curing.

Have you tried Camay?

by Anonymousreply 29May 26, 2021 9:30 PM

What does Camay smell like?

by Anonymousreply 30May 26, 2021 9:31 PM

I have other soaps but am exploring to see if there is a good mass market one.

by Anonymousreply 31May 26, 2021 9:32 PM

I see that Walmart.com sells multi-packs of at least three of the Yardley London soaps where the price per bar is near or under a dollar per bar. These are direct from Walmart.com, not another retailer.

They don't show the Mandarin and Ginger, but they have the English Lavender (4 for $4.41), Aloe & Avocado (4 for $3.18), and Oatmeal & Almond (4 for $3.69).

by Anonymousreply 32May 26, 2021 9:33 PM

Has anyone tried pine tar soap?

by Anonymousreply 33May 26, 2021 9:38 PM

Dove For Men Extra Fresh for me when it comes to a basic soap. I use it with some tiny Korean exfoliating mitt that one of you queens raved about in another thread. They are pretty good, though.

by Anonymousreply 34May 26, 2021 9:39 PM

I like Oil of Olay.

No Ivory fans? I love the clean smell of it and it floats, although I'm not sure why that's important

I buy my soap at Marshall’s or TJ Max. Huge bars that come in attractive boxes. $3-$5 but they last forever.

by Anonymousreply 48May 26, 2021 10:55 PM

no brand names?

by Anonymousreply 49May 26, 2021 10:58 PM

Lately I like using the Dove Mens' Soap bars line.

by Anonymousreply 50May 26, 2021 11:10 PM

Are you asking me r49? They have tons of them, fancy European ones, earthy ā€œorganicā€ ones. I just buy whichever scent I like the best.

Dove Men+Care soap - Deep Clean version - available at Target in various quantities (3-pk, 6-pk, etc.). Really nice soap to use during the warmer months. A very nice clean/fresh scent that is subtle. I switch soaps based on the seasons (Dove beauty bar in cooler months) and enjoy trying different soaps based on scent and price. Trader Joe's has some really great soaps - Lemon Verbena 7oz. bar - made in France - about 3.49 each. Really wonderfull 'luxury' type soap that lasts for months. Also if you want to spend more try Beesential - it's a site that carries many personal grooming items along with bar soap which I have tried. The soaps run about 6.00 per bar but they have sales. I've ordered various items from them and they usually send along a small sample of soap which is how I discovered how good it is.

by Anonymousreply 52May 26, 2021 11:45 PM

I'm going to try this set of Pre De Provence and see which scent I like.

Lever.

Also, Dove Mens

They have Harry's at Tar-jay now. It's sold in the special men's grooming section of my store. A little more expensive ($3.99 a bar), but all four scents are very nice. I especially like "Fig" and "Shiso." (Fig is fig, cardamon, and blood orange.) The other two are called "Stone" and "Redwood." They supposedly sell a variety 4-pack, but I haven't seen that.

Dove is 1/4 moisturizing cream, it simply can't dry your skin the way soap does...

This true and also fact Dove was the first syndet (short for synthetic detergent) cleansing bar.

by Anonymousreply 57May 27, 2021 6:05 AM

Following link explains things better than I, so won't do a long winded post...

Suffice to say Dove does not leave scum or bath tub ring because of it being a blend of surfactants and soap. Much the same way laundry detergents even if they are blended with soap still do not have many or any of the downsides of pure true soaps.

A Mr. Vincent Lamberti invented Dove soap for Lever Bros. (now Unilever) and the product was an instant success. It meant for once those living in hard water areas of USA could bathe with "soap" and get rich lather.

Zest was another early "syndet" "soap" bar. Hence all those commercials about Zest not leaving soap scum...

I used Beekman's goat milk soap when I stayed in a hotel and really liked it. I was going to order some for myself until I saw it was $15 a bar (plus $5 shipping).
