“Cruella “ Reviews

Lukewarm 74% so far.

by Anonymousreply 158November 24, 2021 5:58 PM

I hope it’s available for home rental on Friday. If so, I’ll be watching from home with my popcorn and licorice (and booze).

by Anonymousreply 1May 26, 2021 3:03 PM

On some of the ads for the film, Stone looks like Eva Green.,

Green would have been a MUCH better Cruella. But she's not a star alas...

by Anonymousreply 2May 26, 2021 3:03 PM

Emma is no Glenn.

by Anonymousreply 3May 26, 2021 3:24 PM

Does Glenn have a cameo? She can use all the work she can get, after all. Hopefully someone “threw her a bone.”

by Anonymousreply 4May 26, 2021 4:00 PM

Reductive

by Anonymousreply 5May 26, 2021 8:13 PM

That rating would be much lower if it were not for outright bribery.

by Anonymousreply 6May 26, 2021 8:23 PM

Better rating than Glenn’s version.

by Anonymousreply 7May 26, 2021 8:27 PM

R1: It will be available on Disney+ with Premier Access on May 28th.

by Anonymousreply 8May 26, 2021 8:33 PM

Will this prove whether or not Emma Stone is a bankable star?

by Anonymousreply 9May 26, 2021 8:33 PM

I ain’t risking covid for Emma Stone. Hard pass.

by Anonymousreply 10May 26, 2021 9:18 PM

Bound to be another Wicked!

by Anonymousreply 11May 26, 2021 9:21 PM

That movie looks awful.

by Anonymousreply 12May 26, 2021 9:23 PM

74% is pretty good, not "lukewarm".

by Anonymousreply 13May 26, 2021 9:24 PM

I see, R8, premiere access on the 28th in Canuckistan is $35. Think I’ll be looking for a torrent on the 29th. *Allegedly* looking.

by Anonymousreply 14May 26, 2021 11:37 PM

I like Stone and think she's talented. More versatile and funnier than, say, Jennifer Lawrence.

That said, this project looks and feels unnecessary. It could be silly campy fun, but it probably won't even be that--gays of a certain age are NOT the target audience here.

by Anonymousreply 15May 26, 2021 11:48 PM

Disney manipulates the scores shamelessly.

by Anonymousreply 18May 27, 2021 12:18 AM

I will probably go to the theater to see it.

by Anonymousreply 19May 27, 2021 12:21 AM

OMG!!! This is funny, witty, hilarious!!! Emma Stone and Emma Thompson really brought the house down!!!!

The funniest movie I saw in this horrible year!!! Better than all Netflix shitshows in 2020 and 2021!!!!

by Anonymousreply 20May 28, 2021 10:22 AM

The movie gives more insight into the fashion industry, much more than HALSTON ever could. hahahahahahahahahaha

by Anonymousreply 21May 28, 2021 10:53 AM

I don't trust early reviews at all since Wonder Woman 1984. Its early reviews were featured on Twitter before the movie came out, and every reviewer called it things like "transcendent," said it dealt with sophisticated themes that elevated the genre, it was the best movie of the year, an Oscar contender, etc. I liked the first movie and was excited.

Then the movie turned out to be about a magic wishing rock and it had a totally unnecessary extra hour of boring action sequences. It's almost bad enough to call a disaster.

SO MANY pre-release reviews from critics lavished it with praise, and then after it was released the score dropped like a stone in a wishing well. It seems like the reviewers had to have been bribed somehow, and like it may have been agreed upon for the sake of getting people to go back to movies during the pandemic. It really backfired for me.

by Anonymousreply 22May 28, 2021 11:10 AM

Stop your annoying kvetching and just watch it, fat ho R22. This shit is really good, bitchily, cuntily outrageous. Love love love it.

Hope both Emmas get nominated for the Oscars next year.

by Anonymousreply 23May 28, 2021 11:26 AM

What are the puppies of choice in this outing, Irish Setters?

by Anonymousreply 24May 28, 2021 12:30 PM

R23 are you drunk?

by Anonymousreply 25May 28, 2021 12:52 PM

G, you know what? This is how two Oscar-winning actresses do wonder to the dreadful original.

by Anonymousreply 26May 28, 2021 1:46 PM

I was the original, you fools, you idiots!

by Anonymousreply 27May 28, 2021 2:11 PM

I wouldn't say anything if I were you, R26, after what you did to [italic]Into the Woods[/italic].

by Anonymousreply 28May 28, 2021 2:16 PM

Apparently, the film is fun, but the script is a mess.

by Anonymousreply 29May 28, 2021 2:20 PM

There's no reason this needs to be more than 90 minutes, never mind over two hours.

by Anonymousreply 30May 28, 2021 2:21 PM
but the script is a mess.

How is this allowed?

by Anonymousreply 31May 28, 2021 2:32 PM

No one at Disney can tell a good script from a bad script anymore. All they can tell is "ooh, pwetty cowors" and make the soundtrack as loud and bombastic as possible. Their recent musicals are autotuned abortions.

by Anonymousreply 32May 28, 2021 2:33 PM
and make the soundtrack as loud and bombastic as possible

With singers who don’t annunciate.

by Anonymousreply 33May 28, 2021 2:38 PM

Even Helen Reddy could do that, R33, since they invoked "I Am Woman" in the trailer.

by Anonymousreply 34May 28, 2021 2:40 PM

It should even be a mini-series!!!!! The movie flew by, 134 minutes was too short!!! Yes, I know some eldergays can't hold their piss longer than 90 minutes.

by Anonymousreply 35May 28, 2021 2:43 PM

Some of the most popular and successful movies of all-time are longer than this, R35. But they have enough story to justify that kind of length and this does not.

by Anonymousreply 36May 28, 2021 2:50 PM

OMG! Glenn was an executive producer! It must have killed her to see Emma killing this role!!!

Well, "Il gattopardo" could slog through 190 minutes with barely anything ever happened, then this movie needed no 500 years of fighting to fill the time though. Such a great fun, very enjoyable!!!

by Anonymousreply 37May 28, 2021 3:27 PM

Auntie R36 hasn't watched it yet she complained about the story. Please.....

by Anonymousreply 38May 28, 2021 3:31 PM

I refuse to support a company that lets its workers starve while its CEO lives in a $12 million house.

by Anonymousreply 39May 28, 2021 3:32 PM

And of course the MORE there are, the FUNNIER they are!

by Anonymousreply 47May 28, 2021 8:41 PM

by Anonymousreply 48May 28, 2021 8:47 PM

I'd love to see it but I'll be damned if I buy Disney plus,
make the soundtrack as loud and bombastic as possible.

The soundtrack album is wank.

by Anonymousreply 49May 28, 2021 8:49 PM

The Washington Post called this dreck movie a "creatively bankrupt cash grab" and a "corporation’s attempt to capitalize on existing intellectual property." Right on both counts.

by Anonymousreply 50May 28, 2021 9:38 PM

Emma Stone??? EMMA STONE??????????

by Anonymousreply 51May 28, 2021 9:45 PM

It would have been better if Cruella was played by Patsy Stone.

A prequel about Cruella De Ville. Who goes to see these incredibly stupid movies? People who will pay money to see anything?

by Anonymousreply 57May 29, 2021 5:49 AM

I watched it. I liked it for what it is and enjoyed Emma's performance.

by Anonymousreply 58May 29, 2021 5:56 AM

"What it is" is garbage. Just looking at the trailer makes me nauseous.

by Anonymousreply 59May 29, 2021 6:03 AM

To be fair OP, wouldn't a lukewarm percentage be in the middle?

0-33% = Cold

34-67% = Lukewarm

68-100% = Hot

74% would still be a hot reaction.

by Anonymousreply 60May 29, 2021 6:07 AM

I loved loved loved it too, every second of it!!!!!!

Oh, R59, take your fat meds. It's your obesity that sets off nausea in you again, old fat fart.

by Anonymousreply 61May 29, 2021 6:09 AM

OMG!!! IMDB rating jumped from 7.0 to 7.2 today!!!

People do love the movie.

by Anonymousreply 62May 29, 2021 6:11 AM

Even the wokest of the woke, the Guardian, loved it.
Nowadays, there is hardly a classic female villain who hasn’t been reinvented or origin-mythed on a quasi-feminist basis. (Maybe the three witches in Macbeth should get this treatment, starring Millie Bobby Brown, Elle Fanning and Kirby Howell-Baptiste – who’s actually in this film, playing Estella’s smart mate, Anita.) But the politics of Cruella de Vil are more generational than sexual. She wants to be like her role-model heroine and then wipe her out. It’s not the dog’s skin Cruella wants to rip off and wear, it’s the Baroness’s. She wants to inhabit and destroy.

by Anonymousreply 70May 30, 2021 3:14 AM

I loved loved loved the movie!!! I can fucking say it million time if it could kill a fat, bitter, old, ugly creature like you, R70. Die now, fat fat fat cunt.

hahahahahaha

by Anonymousreply 71May 31, 2021 1:36 AM

R71, you're a retard. I feel sorry for you.

by Anonymousreply 72May 31, 2021 1:46 AM

The movie is such a high art: every piece of props, costume, dresses, accessories, hairstyling, makeup is so meticulously done.

Moreover, it's simply entertaining without being woke or didactic.

by Anonymousreply 73May 31, 2021 1:47 AM

Excellent!

by Anonymousreply 74May 31, 2021 1:47 AM

We are "reviewing" the movie, but then some old, antisocial, bitter, ugly, obese cunt like R71, who is despised by her mother, has to butt in, spew her bile, and ruin the thread. Ugly, fat, cunt R70, time for you to die, either from diabetes or heart attack. Just die, old+fat cunt.

by Anonymousreply 75May 31, 2021 1:53 AM

I loved it. It was a blast. The costumes, the music, the acting, the script - everything was top tier. The most hate I'm seeing are from people who are whining about how they don't see how this Cruella turns into the Cruella from the films or from people who think the bit about the Dalmatians was stupid.

by Anonymousreply 76May 31, 2021 1:58 AM

Why are people acting like this was a straight to video production that “surprised” them?

by Anonymousreply 77May 31, 2021 2:01 AM

Are R73, R74, R75 AND r76 all the same retard? It seems so. At any rate, they are continuing to embarrass themselves. R75 is particularly pathetic, creaming in his frilly pink panties about a Disney prequel about Cruella De Ville. He must be the product of a sexual encounter between close relatives. That seems a likely explanation for his mental retardation. Poor sod, What a sad, lonely life he must lead.

by Anonymousreply 78May 31, 2021 2:03 AM

Why are fat, old people who have not watched the movies keep criticizing and nitpicking it?

by Anonymousreply 79May 31, 2021 2:04 AM

It was fine - mildly entertaining, quite meandering, and absolutely too long. The premise is really fun, and there are some good moments. It could have been much, much better.

by Anonymousreply 80May 31, 2021 2:06 AM

R70 is obese, old, and ugly and now rabidly triggered by other people's opposing views. Ignore her and all the negative comments are gone.

I still loved, loved, loved the movie. Highly recommended if you can watch it online!!!

by Anonymousreply 81May 31, 2021 2:10 AM

The cgi dogs were creepy and distracting and cheap as hell.

by Anonymousreply 82May 31, 2021 2:10 AM

"Mildly entertaining, quite meandering, and absolutely too long?" That doesn't sound "fine." That sounds, at best, mediocre.

by Anonymousreply 83May 31, 2021 2:11 AM

The costume design is amazing and the recreation of high fashion items is superb. The movie is a delight.

R70 is jealous as she's too fat for a theater seat and too poor to afford Disney+.

by Anonymousreply 84May 31, 2021 2:16 AM

Who is this bitch?

by Anonymousreply 85May 31, 2021 2:18 AM

R81/84 is an insane retard who has fallen in love with a crummy Disney prequel. He is stupid, friendless, a virgin, lives with his parents and hoards Disney collectibles. No wonder this movie makes him pull his pud with "delight."

by Anonymousreply 86May 31, 2021 2:20 AM

R86/R70 is projecting and reviewing her sad life now? Nobody cares about you, fat, old diabetic cunt. Just die.

CRUELLA is an entertaing and delightful movie movie with so many amazing, dazzling fashion thingies. Loved loved loved it.

by Anonymousreply 87May 31, 2021 2:28 AM

We watched it at home. We enjoyed it. I would give it a solid 7.5/10.

by Anonymousreply 88May 31, 2021 2:29 AM

"Dazzling fashion thingies?" R87, you are truly a silly retarded troll. I think you're on this thread repeating how you "loved, loved, loved" some Disney movie because you're lonely and have a lot of time on your hands. You poor thing.

by Anonymousreply 89May 31, 2021 2:40 AM

And R89 is stalking everyone who posts positive reviews on this thread. So she must be more retarded. lonely, and miserable, and must have a lot more time on her hands than those she stalks, pathetic, old fat sod.

I loved the movie too!!! HAHAHAHAHAHA

by Anonymousreply 90May 31, 2021 2:47 AM

R89 she is a fat stalker. I'm scared..... I just enjoyed the movie, but why R89 has to be so angry and lashing out like this. Why? Why? Why?

Is R89 unhinged and demented? She types psychocunt to me. I already ignored her. I'm scared of fat, crazy, old people.

by Anonymousreply 91May 31, 2021 2:54 AM

by Anonymousreply 93May 31, 2021 3:54 AM

I liked it a lot, but I get the feeling the writer must have been a TV writer because it watched like 4-30 minute segments that could have been broadcast over 4 days.

by Anonymousreply 94May 31, 2021 6:31 AM

The movie sucks and the ageist lookist scumbag defending it is probably getting paid to do so by the Walt Disney Company.

by Anonymousreply 95May 31, 2021 6:44 AM

Is this another Stone Oscar worthy performance?

by Anonymousreply 104May 31, 2021 2:50 PM

Box office was ok considering the pandemic but still a little disappointing. Can Emma Stone open a movie?

by Anonymousreply 105May 31, 2021 4:16 PM

I think of Emma Stone as a good wisecracking character actress who can lead a cast in a very good comedy or who can play an emotionally heavier indie role, but not as a big box office lead star.

by Anonymousreply 106May 31, 2021 4:20 PM

The impression I got from seeing a few clips of Emma Stone in this, is that she's too young for the role, or she's playing it too mature, which is why it comes off as unconvincing.

by Anonymousreply 107May 31, 2021 4:35 PM

I loved the COSTUMES! Both Emmas looked like walking ERTE prints. The script was nonessential to this feast for the eyes. If nothing else, and I mean nothing else, this film should get an Oscar for the glorious gowns everyone wore.

by Anonymousreply 111May 31, 2021 10:43 PM

I was an ok movie. Emma Thompson is marvelous as the big evil "queen" of the movie. The whole arc of Estella embracing Cruella fell flat for me. Everybody helping her, especially Mark Strong's character, was ridiculous even for a Disney movie. The dresses were nice though.

by Anonymousreply 115June 1, 2021 11:51 AM

It’s funny and the performances are pretty good- dare I say it’s Emma Stones best performance(which to be fair isn’t saying much). It is too long by about 20 minutes but Emma Thompson is brilliant.

Both Emmas deserves Oscar nods.

This film was just a great joyride. Although I thought they could have cut off the last 20 mins and saved it for a sequel.

by Anonymousreply 125June 6, 2021 6:24 AM

It was fun, but the female villain backstories are indeed feeling repetitive. We get it: women can never truly be evil.

by Anonymousreply 126June 6, 2021 6:55 AM

R126 - I think there's a story behind anyone being evil. For women, estrogen is distinctly different than testosterone and it doesn't engender violence as much as men.

I think it's interesting they're doing backstories - just like The Joker - as to what makes people this way. It is humanizing but also shows how continual mistreatment can fuck people up.

I applaud it. Now, if they can figure out why Republicans are so god damn evil - that's the true mystery. They're all villains in my eyes.

The film was terrible. No redeeming characters (unless you consider a racial quota in the cast as redemption), no character development in the script, no positive role models or life lessons for the preteen girls who will watch this. The message was, "the only way you can be successful is if you're nastier than your opponent". Making a film about the come up of a villain who wants to skin puppies for their fur and using the "sad childhood = bad adult" angle is so egregiously immoral for children to watch that I cannot even begin to describe its ramifications. The mouse is a soul destroying corporate behemoth who will stop at nothing to suck dry every last drop of creativity from their intellectual property acquisitions. The only good thing about it was the soundtrack.

by Anonymousreply 129June 6, 2021 9:47 PM

Wow R129 who pissed in your Cheerios?

I just saw it.
No redeeming characters (unless you consider a racial quota in the cast as redemption), no character development in the script, no positive role models or life lessons for the preteen girls who will watch this.

Not every movie needs a redeeming character. I would say there actually was character development, though rushed, unlike most movies.

This is not a movie for kids or preteens, and perhaps Disney should have made that more clear, but it just isn’t. Sometimes you do have to be a bitch to win.

I’m glad I saw it in a theater, because I would have been annoyed if I paid $30 on Disney+, but I think it was a good $10 well spent.

The parachute at the end was bullshit (surely they could have come up with something better than that), but otherwise I thought it was a solid film.

Movies with no redeeming characters tend to be very hard to watch. I've tried watching a few and I could never get through them.

This film showed that Cruella always had a mean streak; that's why her nickname was Cruella. We're showed her mother warning her about letting "Cruella" come out. By the end of the film Estella frees herself from trying to keep that side of herself tamped down.

People keep saying she hated the Dalmatians because of her mother's death when she never blamed the dogs - she initially blamed herself, then when she realized The Baroness had the locket and The Baroness spoke disparagingly about her mother, she went on her campaign of vengeance.

Variety gives reasons why "Cruella" the best movie of the year, so far.

I liked it a lot. Interesting plot. Two fine actors. Great costumes.

What's not to like?

by Anonymousreply 134June 7, 2021 6:16 AM

Her accent sucked.

by Anonymousreply 135June 7, 2021 8:34 AM

Was it Dick Van Dyke's Cockney-level bad or just not convincing?

by Anonymousreply 136June 7, 2021 9:06 AM

Emma Thompson is a racist bitch who should be blacklisted for her racism.

Girls. Girls. Raving over this film isn't going to get you Annual Passes to the Disney parks, so shut the fuck up.

by Anonymousreply 138June 8, 2021 12:47 AM

Yeah, that's why folks like it.

by Anonymousreply 139June 8, 2021 12:55 AM

Anyone who doesn’t hate her is a racist.

While Glenn is a better Cruella than Emma, the film as a whole is better than the 1996 live adaption. The plot is much more for adults than it is for kids, which makes the parts of the 1996 live adaptation boring as hell unless Cruella is involved.

At almost 2 1/2 hours long, it is worth it due to the story that needs to be told. Besides, Emma Stone channeling Miranda Priestly was worth it. Of course, Miranda Priestly was more likable.

Is that what she was doing?

by Anonymousreply 142June 11, 2021 5:52 PM

I'm guessing the film isn't another Maleficent, i.e. rehabilitation of a Disney villain? Cruella wants to kill puppies. She makes Jafar look like a choirboy.

That Touchstone movie I got an Oscar nomination for back in the 1980s has a four-letter word in its name that more accurately describes her, R143.

A film critic said "despite a game performance by Emma Stone" the title character of this movie "never becomes more interesting than just a nasty-natured person awash in self-pity and revenge." The movie also achieves the dubious feat of being "tedious, transgressive, chaotic, and inert at the same time" and unfortunately the movie "can't let go of the idea that this dog murderer must be likable" and so it recasts Cruella as a mischievous former street orphan who turns theatrically cruel when she beings apprenticing under an imperious older fashion designer. Sounds like a right mess to me.

What bothers me is that Cruella basically embraces her DNA heritage of being evil and it's declared a big empowerment moment. There's anti heroine and then there's watching an origin story of a cunt. IMO Cruella is the latter.

I saw this yesterday, being a fan of Emma Thomson and Emma Stone. The former is given very little to do in this. She is a great comic and dramatic actress, but all she is required to do in this is grimace. She could do this part on autopilot, and that is exactly what she seems to do. The Baroness could be a great, campy villainess but she somehow lacks charisma and a convincing inner life.

Stone’s character is very unlikeable. There is no-one in this film to root for. I think we are supposed to root for Stone, but she seems both unpleasant and dull. The tone of the story is dark, and the message seems to be that the world is a horrible place, so it’s best to toughen up and use people to get what you want.

It’s about an hour too long. I actually fell asleep for about 15 minutes and I don’t think I missed much. I don’t think the film-makers really knew what tone they were going for. I think kids would find this too adult, and adults would find it boring. It’s not dramatic enough to be a drama, or comedic enough to be a comedy.

On the plus side, the sound track is great.

Margo Robbie and Emma Stone need for Harley and Cruella to do a crossover film together.

by Anonymousreply 148June 13, 2021 5:59 AM

r148 And kill them off so we never see them again.

Worldwide box office is at $129 million, unfortunately the budget was estimated to be between 100 and 200 million. I'm curious as to how much Disney has raked in from Disney+ subscribers who paid for Premier Access.

"Cruella wants to kill puppies"

Except she doesn't. That was addressed clearly in the film and I thought it was a really interesting way to twist a villain who haunted my childhood. The Dalmatian coat was a fake and she actually loves dogs. The scene where Artie tells her everyone believes the coat was real and she says, "People need a villain" was interesting.

I actually really enjoyed the film. I thought Stone was fantastic and the music was great. Just a fun, popcorn film for a warm almost summer day. I loved the cgi dogs, especially Winky. And I didn't think it was about her being bad as much as it was about her coming to terms with her "bad" side and embracing it because it made her more powerful. The scene at the fountain at the end was really well done by Stone. You could see that her adoptive mother's love is what redeemed her from turning out like the Baroness completely. It's been years since I've seen 101 Dalmatians but I'd actually like to go back and watch it now to see if it changes the Cruella that scared the crap out of me as a kid. Seems like her whole Dalmatian fetish was simply a ruse now to keep herself in the public eye. Fun film for some lighthearted comedy.

Good Lord this movie sucked…such lazy filmmaking. The soundtrack alone tells you everything…the same tired music everyone always uses: She’s a Rainbow. For what, the 10th high profile use of it since The Stones began licensing it? Nina Simone, Ohio Players, ELO, Rose Royce. This music is used all the time. There’s so much music out there: do some fucking work.

Did Emma Store really dye her pubic hair for the role? I was heard that she did but the scenes ended up on the cutting room floor.

by Anonymousreply 153November 21, 2021 10:44 PM

Well, did she?!

by Anonymousreply 154November 22, 2021 7:12 PM
I was heard that she did

Oh, dear!

But I hope Emma Stone gets nominated for an Oscar instead of that dreadful, emotionless Kristen Stewart.

I liked the movie a lot. I'm surprised how much I liked it, actually. It was fun and clever. YouTube constantly plays the clip of Emma and Emma facing off ("Wot is your name?" "Cruella." "Oh! That's...fabulous!") as an ad and I watch it almost every time because of their delivery. Emma Thompson especially is hard not to watch.
