Ryan O’Connell: "I was born into an able-ist hellhole’"

The frank, fizzy comedy Special, which has just landed on Netflix, is a tale of two Ryans. There is Ryan Hayes, the main character, a gay intern with cerebral palsy who lives in Los Angeles with his mollycoddling mother. Then there is Ryan O’Connell, the show’s star and creator, who is also a gay Angelino with cerebral palsy. But there the similarities end. Moments from O’Connell’s life resurface on screen, such as the time he was hit by a car then pretended to his new college friends that his limp was a result of the accident. (Season one ends with Ryan coming out as disabled.) But whereas Ryan is gauche and apologetic, his 34-year-old creator is almost intimidatingly sassy and self-possessed.

Talking over Zoom from his home, O’Connell speaks at the speed, and in the style, of Twitter. Anyone who read the tell-all blogs he wrote in his 20s, or his memoir I’m Special: And Other Lies We Tell Ourselves (from which Special is adapted), will recognise the exuberant voice. Song lyrics and invisible exclamation marks litter his conversation, while acronyms and punctuation are verbalised: “LOL”, “Dot-dot-dot.” He’s like the internet personified, but with none of the spite.

I like him and I like the show

I watched some of this yesterday. I like the show. the only thing that bugs me is the clinging mother.

The boss bitch really reminds me of the character of Grace's bitchy daughter in Grace and Frankie. Even looks a bit like her

by Anonymousreply 6May 27, 2021 7:21 PM

It's not enough to be a gay white male to get any attention nowadays. Youhave to be "differently abled" as well. At a minimum.

by Anonymousreply 7May 27, 2021 7:25 PM

He's gorgeous in that photo. I like that type.

UGH MY LIFE IS SOO HARD NO ONE UNDERSTANDS ME

People who laugh at sitcoms like Full House or Charles in Charge might find this guy’s show amusing but, sadly, it is not clever or memorable at all. For 10-minute hilarity try Mike Tyson Mysteries instead.

by Anonymousreply 10May 27, 2021 8:31 PM

I thought it was cute and I hated Full House and CinC.

This is the second season, right? Is Augie Prew still in it?

by Anonymousreply 13June 1, 2021 12:31 AM

R7. Um, he happens to be gay and disabled, so there’s THAT. Also, there are plenty of people who are gay and disabled—sorry if depicting them offends your sense of exceptionalism.

[quote]This is the second season, right? Is Augie Prew still in it?

He was written out because Augustus was filming Amazon's "Lord of the Rings" series. They explained that his character moved to New York to become the next Ronan Farrow.

Huh. This new season, season 2, is the last:

[quote]For all his elation over Special, he admits to feeling “disappointed” when Netflix told him the second season would be its last, but he feels ready to let it go.

by Anonymousreply 17June 1, 2021 5:31 AM

The show is hard to watch but good for him. His boyfriend is hot and they seem happy so there’s that.

by Anonymousreply 18June 1, 2021 6:17 AM

Had there ever been a sore with such explicit gay sex scenes? I don't think even Looking went that far.

Too many similarities between this show and Shrill, right down to the eccentric boss. Shrill is better.

by Anonymousreply 19June 1, 2021 7:23 AM

I really like this show and I am excited to see what Ryan does next. We need more voices like his and that sort of representation.

I've not finished the second season yet, sad that it's not continuing.

by Anonymousreply 20June 1, 2021 11:24 AM

The first season introduced me to some obscure girl group songs.

That makes sense. Thanks. I hope Augie has a good role in "Lord of the Rings." He was wasted on the Jennifer Anniston Programme.

by Anonymousreply 22June 1, 2021 2:58 PM

Headline: not everyone gets what they want in life. Systemic structures to blame. Weather at 11, and it’s gonna be a scorcher!

by Anonymousreply 23June 1, 2021 3:04 PM

[quote] Had there ever been a sore with such explicit gay sex scenes?

You should’ve watched that show about a 600-pound man who’d hire an escort every month. Full of bedsores.. Those sores had very explicit and vomit-inducing gay sex scenes.

by Anonymousreply 24June 1, 2021 3:16 PM

The Ryan character was so obnoxious when he fucks the boyfriend and gets a little shit on his dick. The boyfriend should have dumped him right then.

[quote] He was written out because Augustus was filming Amazon's "Lord of the Rings" series. They explained that his character moved to New York to become the next Ronan Farrow.

And it was clear this happened very close to production and they had to hastily write his character out, since they basically replicated the storyline they were going to use with Prew and substituted a new character. At the end of Season 1, Ryan and Prew's character kiss, even though Prew is in a relationship. So they had to invent a new boyfriend character who was also in a relationship. Lazy writing. But the show was garbage in Season 2, anyway.

Here he is with DL fav Trevor Noah. Does Ryan care Trevor is a homophobe?

Trevor is a homophobe and yet he had NPH on to discuss "It's a Sin"? Make it make sense.

by Anonymousreply 29June 1, 2021 6:06 PM

Sad that it is cancelled, but they did end it in a satisfying way.

by Anonymousreply 30June 1, 2021 7:41 PM

It ended. I was satisfied.

by Anonymousreply 31June 2, 2021 1:12 AM

I could watch another season or two. Thats too bad

by Anonymousreply 32June 2, 2021 2:13 AM

I just binged the second season in one viewing. Great show. Sad that it's ending and why? Surely it didn't cost that much to produce and Netflix could certainly afford it given all the other shit they waste money on.

by Anonymousreply 33July 3, 2021 6:01 AM

Netflix loves cancelling shows

by Anonymousreply 34July 3, 2021 6:14 AM

I hate professional victims who martyr themselves so the rest of us can feel like we've done something wrong.

I don't like the stories such people always seem driven to tell.

The truth is I don't give a crap about their gold-plated problems at all.

Yeah, they really made it crystal clear that topping was really not for Ryan. This scene actually highlighted what I felt was the show's only real misstep this season -- Charlie Barnett should've been cast as Ryan's first true love interest instead of Max Jenkins, who, though adorable, reads as a total bottom. Yes, his character was actually versatile (hence the "shit on a dick" scene noted above) but realistically I don't think Ryan would've been all that turned attracted to him but would've been on his back with his legs in the air faster than you can say "fuck me" for someone like Charlie Barnett (who gives off total top energy).

by Anonymousreply 40July 3, 2021 11:15 PM

s/b "I don't think Ryan would've been all that attracted to him"

by Anonymousreply 41July 3, 2021 11:21 PM

I love the episode where they have butt sex and the “special” one pulls his dick out and there’s shit all over it. He freaks out and the bottom thinks it’s perfectly normal. They end up squabbling over this and getting hurt feelings. I thought it was brave to do an episode with shitty butt sex and “special” sex.

It's certainly very different from the very special episodes on 80s shows like 'Different Strokes', 'The Facts of Life', and 'Golden Girls'.

by Anonymousreply 43July 3, 2021 11:48 PM

So, how explicit? Sizemeat?

by Anonymousreply 44July 4, 2021 12:09 AM

agree re: charlie barnett.

they only show ass i think - no sizemeat. just fast forward for the sex scenes. it's not really worth it otherwise. a lot of focus on some fat frau indian best friend and her boyfriend.

by Anonymousreply 45July 4, 2021 12:25 AM

What I loved about that scene is that it showed Ryan to be really annoying about it. It didn't portray him as someone being justified at being disgusted by shit on dick, but as juvenile and inexperienced - which he was. If they really wanted to close the circle they would have showed him fucking the younger guy and getting shit on his dick and not caring.

by Anonymousreply 46July 4, 2021 12:31 AM

[quote]a lot of focus on some fat frau indian best friend and her boyfriend.

R45, my guess is they only did that because they were kind of forced to given that Netflix wasn't going to greenlight a third season -- i.e., they wanted to wrap up her character, too, in addition to Ryan's.

by Anonymousreply 47July 4, 2021 12:42 AM

[quote]It's certainly very different from the very special episodes on 80s shows like 'Different Strokes',

Yeah, because this time the sex is consensual and legal-age.

by Anonymousreply 48July 4, 2021 12:50 AM

Agree r46 - he was such a brat. Wouldn’t let it go when the boyfriend had been so understanding of all his issues.

by Anonymousreply 49July 4, 2021 12:31 PM

I remember his Vice columns from years ago. He mostly wrote about his banal sexual encounters and framed them as newsworthy. Wow Ryan, you visited a college campus and fucked some guy in his dorm room? That is absolutely wild, hooking up with a stranger. Oddly enough I found his journal-blog thing online and thought a lot of it was funny.
