Lodge vs Amazon Basics Dutch Oven

Le Creuset is out of my price range so I’m looking at one of these two for my first Dutch oven. Does anyone have experience with either line and can offer up some recommendations? I thank you in advance!!!

MI bought a Martha Stewart one a few years ago and it has held up great. I bought the largest one and it was on sale at Macy's for 138.00 I think...

if you buy Amazon basics, you might just head to AliExpress or Wish to buy one, those basically are the same with different names or no brands at all, made by the same factory in China.

by Anonymousreply 2May 26, 2021 2:39 AM

There's nothing quite like a Dutch oven!

by Anonymousreply 3May 26, 2021 2:43 AM

Lodge for sure. I had their 8qt. dutch oven. Loved it.

by Anonymousreply 4May 26, 2021 2:46 AM

Yeah I'd go with Lodge.

by Anonymousreply 5May 26, 2021 2:51 AM

Just use a cheap cast iron skillet. It's the same thing, minus the fancy enamel coating, which does nothing for you. You can buy cast iron skillets in every size too. A cast iron skillet improves with age and you don't have to worry about the enamel coating chipping off over time.

I like Lodge

I bought this Dutch oven a few months ago and I am really happy with it.

Ive used Lodge for decades. They have great products. The enamel, and the cast iron all made, and perform well.

Hi Ive, welcome to DL!

Go to the flea market.

by Anonymousreply 12May 26, 2021 3:48 AM

What is this strange website in the OP? Referral link spam? Something's not right. OP, explain. Why wouldn't you link directly to Amazon instead of this silly website?

by Anonymousreply 13May 26, 2021 3:50 AM

Why not just use your stove? Is it so you can check on how the food is cooking more easily? Is it to avoid bending over, which can be a pain?

by Anonymousreply 14May 26, 2021 3:51 AM

I have the Amazon one and have been making bread in it for years. Not sure about the Lodge. Depending on the usage you expect I would invest more in something you plan on using more. I don't use mine all that much. Plus if you have a smooth top be careful, they are heavy and have scratched my induction stove from minimal usage. As a result I only use it for oven only recipes now.

by Anonymousreply 15May 26, 2021 3:53 AM

I have a Lodge and it's held up beautifully for years now. The enamel is easy to clean. I also have a cast iron skillet, and you can't make a stew in that.

by Anonymousreply 16May 26, 2021 4:02 AM

I got a 9 qt enameled Dutch oven, cuisinart at Homegoods for $69. Excellent

by Anonymousreply 17May 26, 2021 4:04 AM

Go for the Martha Stewart ones....They are always on sale at Macy's...I have a couple that I have had for years

by Anonymousreply 18May 26, 2021 4:08 AM

[quote] What is this strange website in the OP?

It's something weird so OP can get more WTF responses.

Also, this is an agenda thread. OP has no interest in Dutch ovens. It's a segue to something.

Just wait.

by Anonymousreply 19May 26, 2021 4:10 AM

If you happen to live near a (Cost Plus) World Market, they sell their own store brand which is only like $50 or $60.

by Anonymousreply 20May 26, 2021 4:13 AM

I have a Lodge Dutch oven, and I love it.

by Anonymousreply 21May 26, 2021 5:15 AM

I like to bring my dutch ovens to bed. Jeffrey loves them.

by Anonymousreply 22May 26, 2021 6:55 PM

Another vote for Lodge. I love you r22

by Anonymousreply 23May 26, 2021 6:58 PM

Lodge if you can - solid line of product, you won't be disappointed. Ditto the Martha Stewart, similar price point.

by Anonymousreply 24May 26, 2021 7:17 PM

Regardless of which one you buy OP, make sure that the lid knob is made of metal not plastic. This will allow you to use it for things like no-knead bread where you preheat the Dutch oven in a very hot oven for 45-60 minutes. We needed to purchase a metal one for a Le Creuset pot that we use for this.

by Anonymousreply 25May 26, 2021 8:35 PM

I have a Lodge and a Tramontina. They're both excellent cooking vessels.

by Anonymousreply 26May 26, 2021 8:43 PM

William -Sonoma has good sales on Staub enameled cast iron. I got a large skillet for about $160 and Dutch oven for $80.

by Anonymousreply 27May 26, 2021 9:05 PM

Le Creuset is made in China now...

by Anonymousreply 28May 26, 2021 10:39 PM

Muriel - this is a stealth fart thread!!

by Anonymousreply 29May 26, 2021 10:45 PM

Melania loves my Dutch Ovens! Especially after a taco bowl and some KFC!

by Anonymousreply 30May 26, 2021 10:48 PM

Le Creuset cast iron is still made in France. Their ceramic and stoneware is made in Thailand and China.

by Anonymousreply 31May 26, 2021 10:52 PM

This is the old model Lodge, I actually prefer it to the newer style. I bought it six months ago and I love it. Can't beat the price.

Tramontina is better than lodge.

by Anonymousreply 34May 27, 2021 12:31 AM

OP, I have way too much cookware, but have learned a few things along the way. Creuset has by far the best enamel. If the enamel is not first rate, it will chip. Check eBay for a used Creuset in good condition.

For most things, I prefer using 3-ply stainless steel. It is much easier to care for. There is nothing you can do in cast iron that you can't do as well in a stainless pot.

by Anonymousreply 35May 27, 2021 12:34 AM

Buy Amazon. Support Bezos.

by Anonymousreply 36May 27, 2021 12:40 AM

Don't buy a Cuisinart. The fucker burns everything.

by Anonymousreply 37May 27, 2021 12:41 AM

I like Le Creuset but have found that Staub is better. I have both and really like how the Staub lid works. Less of that irritating browning that the Le Creuset tends to allow. We have a couple of Lodges, too, that work fine. Plain iron is NOT what is wanted, for several reasons. And I wouldn't waste money on the Cuisinart Dutch oven - seemed thin.

by Anonymousreply 38May 27, 2021 1:00 AM

I don't braise a lot - it's too hot here for hours spent with the range or oven on. When I do braise, it's in the pressure cooker because it takes less than half the time. This is why I don't have a dutch oven. If I lived somewhere cool, I'd probably make more casseroles. Sometimes I wish I had a kitchen outside.

by Anonymousreply 39May 27, 2021 4:50 PM

I got mine from Aldi almost 10 years ago and it still looks like new and does the job.

by Anonymousreply 40May 27, 2021 4:54 PM

Here you go, OP.

I have a few cast iron pans. One of which I use all the time. Keeps it nice and seasoned.

by Anonymousreply 42June 5, 2021 3:37 PM

Snobs. The AmazonBasics one has a 1-year guarantee: if you don’t like it for any reason, contact them and they’ll issue a refund. That’s how AmazonBasics works.

by Anonymousreply 43June 5, 2021 3:51 PM

Looks fine. Reviews are great.

Either is fine. Just don't get the stupid, fucking "Always Pahn".

by Anonymousreply 46June 5, 2021 4:25 PM

I'm not much of a cooker so I don't really understand why would I use a Dutch oven when I can use a normal Revere or Faberwsre stockpot that can cook on the stovetop or in the oven?

by Anonymousreply 47June 5, 2021 4:32 PM

I recall reading a couple reviews that specifically called out Creuset for being overpriced and no better than Lodge, which I have and really like.

by Anonymousreply 48June 5, 2021 5:07 PM

Amazon Basics products are pretty good though, they seem to focus on quality.

by Anonymousreply 49June 5, 2021 5:11 PM

And pretty sure the Lodge dutch ovens are made in China.

by Anonymousreply 50June 5, 2021 5:17 PM

What is this no-knead bread business?
