Guy Fieri is now the highest paid chef on cable television

Up until last month, Guy Fieri, esteemed mayor of Flavortown, had a pretty sweet $30 million exclusive three-year contract with the Food Network. But his negotiation skills must be as acute as his eye for a good business venture, because Forbes has reported that Fieri has signed a new three-year contract with the network—this time for $80 million. That ought to cover the gas for his little red Camaro as he zips around the country for seasons 34-36 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.

Fieri is now the highest paid chef on cable TV by a significant margin. And why not? Forbes notes that Triple D (Fieri’s affectionate term for his flagship program) “generated more than $230 million in 2020 ad revenue for the Food Network, according to data analytics firm Kantar.” Not only that, but the series has consistently drawn audiences to the network since 2006, or more than half the lifespan of the network itself. Discovery Networks, parent company of the Food Network, is notoriously cheap when it comes to paying its biggest stars, so while we have no evidence of this, it can be reasonably assumed that Fieri leveraged his role as the face of more than fourteen different Food Network franchises to secure his healthy raise. He now makes more than Gordon Ramsay, “Pioneer Woman” Ree Drummond, and Chip and Joanna Gaines all made on their respective networks at their peak. Fieri’s on fire.

Guy Fieri rolled up to the gates of Flavortown inside a Trojan horse of flames, frosted tips, trash can nachos, and various other X-treme affectations. But since first captivating the public 15 years ago, he’s brought real talent and thoughtfulness to each of his projects. It’s not just any TV personality who could provide independently owned restaurants with such a lasting bump in business, nor would it be nearly as fun watching an even slightly more pretentious chef tool around in their sprawling ranch kitchen. Guy’s new $80 million contract is an acknowledgement by the Food Network that its biggest star is one who earned his shine—and he somehow did so with an authenticity that never looked authentic. He used his attention-grabbing persona as a tool, always taking that attention and casting it immediately toward what matters: the restaurants, the workers, the happy customers, the food, the food, the food.

To anyone who disparages his reign, we have only this to say: What did Guy Fieri ever do to you?

He's my not-so-secret crush. I love Guy's Ranch Kitchen. Also a fan of Grocery Games. He is a truly nice "Guy" and has done a lot of the restaurant business during COVID and for Northern CA during the fires.

I'll take him, frosted tips and all.

by Anonymousreply 5May 25, 2021 9:19 PM

It's actually pretty well-deserved.

DDD is probably THE most watched cable television show.

It's extremely popular, across all demographics.

Food Network hit the jackpot with Guy Fieri.

He was literally a nobody, until he got on to the "Next Food Network Star" reality show.

by Anonymousreply 7May 25, 2021 9:22 PM

Bobby Flay must be so pissed!

He actually was on the judging panel that chose Guy Fieri.

Now guy is more popular, and also making WAY more money than Bobby Flay.

No wonder Bobby has NEVER had Guy on any of his television shows.

by Anonymousreply 8May 25, 2021 9:23 PM

I like Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. I love diner food and road trips, so it's perfect for me. Also, he's really respectful of the restaurant owners. These really are mom and pop, non-chain restaurants. DDD brings business to these people.

However, I think he got paid to feature Tommy's Joynt in San Francisco. I've never heard any SF resident talk about eating at Tommy's Joynt.

by Anonymousreply 9May 25, 2021 9:24 PM

He's beloved.

I loved him.

It's very much well deserved.

I still remember the work he did helping out restaurant workers during the pandemic.

[quote] However, I think he got paid to feature Tommy's Joynt in San Francisco. I've never heard any SF resident talk about eating at Tommy's Joynt.

I agree with you, R9.

However, Guy has publicly acknowledged on his show that some of the places he visits, are based on recommendations.

I noticed on one episode that he uncomfortably mentioned visiting this one restaurant in Denver, because the guy who owns DDD's production company made the recommendation.

I think that he really does take ownership of DDD, and doesn't want to recommend a place that really sucks. Especially because his name is behind the recommendation.

by Anonymousreply 13May 25, 2021 9:28 PM

[quote] these shows are so fucking fake, they know the tv crew is showing up so of course they cook the best dishes, extra big servings etc

Guy point blank asks them, "Is this a regular portion/serving, or are you just doing this for television?"

I've heard him ask the chefs this question MANY times. On air.

by Anonymousreply 14May 25, 2021 9:30 PM

You just know there's a deal to give Hunter Fieri his own show tucked away in that $80 million deal.

by Anonymousreply 15May 25, 2021 9:31 PM

Well that settles it then. The show is real and Guy Fieri is a real guy!

by Anonymousreply 16May 25, 2021 9:34 PM

Hunter has ZERO charisma, R15.

Personality definitely isn't genetic, because Hunter is a total bore.

It really does give you a contrast between Guy's HUGE personality and charisma, versus Hunter's dead energy.

by Anonymousreply 21May 25, 2021 9:36 PM

I like him but I really don't know what his own cooking style is like - he hosts programs where other cooks/chefs compete against each other.

by Anonymousreply 22May 25, 2021 9:42 PM

This guy used to manage chain restaurants. How the fuck did he arrive at this?

by Anonymousreply 23May 25, 2021 9:44 PM

Guy knows how to cook, R22.

He just doesn't HAVE to do it any more. He's richer than fuck!

However, he has owned restaurants such as "Johnny Garlics" as well as generic "Guy Fieri" restaurants that serve Applebees type of food.

I remember he showcased his Las Vegas restaurant on one DDD episode, and his bartender made a bloody mary.

One of the ingredients was BARBECUE SAUCE. I was like, WTF??? Who DRINKS BBQ sauce??? It looked totally disgusting.

Right then and there, I knew I would never eat at one of his restaurants.

Even so, he owns a chain of restaurants all over the US and Mexico.

In this video, his Vegas restaurant looks completely empty! Haha.

Alton Brown must be seething with envy.

by Anonymousreply 25May 25, 2021 9:48 PM

R25, the difference between Guy Fieri and Alton Brown, is likeability.

Say what you will about Guy, but he's approachable, fun, and easy to talk to. That's why people like him, and that's why his shows are so successful. He's a people person.

Alton, on the other hand, is a stuck up cunt. Whether he truly is or not, doesn't matter. That's how he comes across. Uptight, nasty, rude, pretentious, and judgmental.

Sorry, but it's true.

by Anonymousreply 27May 25, 2021 9:51 PM

He did study culinary stuff at University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). There was an episode where he visited the UNLV campus and one of his old teachers was featured.

There's a Canadian show called You Gotta eat here which is basically a Canadian version of DDD. It as really popular and was on the air in many countries, not just Canada.

Guy's production company trademarked the phrase "you gotta eat here" so now the Canadian show is called Big Food Bucket List.

Guy really is an asshole.

I remember watching the season of The Next Food Network Star he was on. He was head and shoulders above all the other contestants, both in skill and in charisma and likability. He totally deserved his win, but I'm shocked at just how popular he's become. I never watched any of his shows, but they definitely found a real star. I don't think they were ever able to come close after that.

by Anonymousreply 50May 27, 2021 12:50 AM

Let's get one thing straight: he's not a "chef". He's an obnoxious TV personality capitalizing on the America's obsession for vicariously enjoying watching people eat greasy food in large quantities.

by Anonymousreply 51May 27, 2021 12:53 AM

Remember when the Food Network actually used to be about food and learning how to cook? Now it’s all about the hosts.

by Anonymousreply 52May 27, 2021 12:57 AM

by Anonymousreply 53May 27, 2021 12:59 AM

I can't stand this opportunist. Food Network fell for all of it, and handed the big bucks over to a loud fat talentless PUNK.

by Anonymousreply 56May 27, 2021 1:18 AM

Yeah, r56. Watching him actually makes me uncomfortable. A sort of second hand embarrassment, if you will. I can't figure out if he doesn't want to be there but does it for the appearance fee, to please dad, or he has zero self-awareness.

by Anonymousreply 58May 27, 2021 1:27 AM

R58, Hunter has been on DDD with guy since he was a little boy.

He was a bit of a ham when he was younger, and you can tell that he enjoyed being on camera.

I think that when he got older, Guy tried to make him his side-kick, almost grooming him to take over. In fact, Hunter even went to UNLV, probably at Guy's urging. He graduated from there a few years ago, and I think he was majoring in Culinary Arts.

On the show, Guy would take Hunter with him to various restaurants, and ask his opinion on the food. His replies were dry and uninformed. Just .... blah.

Hunter is an attractive kid, and if he had even one tenth of Guy's personality, he could probably be doing his own show.

Sadly, he just doesn't have it.

by Anonymousreply 59May 27, 2021 1:56 AM

He’s the human version of Pooochie.

by Anonymousreply 60May 27, 2021 2:01 AM

I have to add that Guy probably wanted Hunter to take over the show.

Guy actually stopped doing DDD for a few years.

My guess is that he was away from home way too much, traveling all over the country. I also noticed (ever so slightly) that he would be flirting with some of the female patrons that he would be talking to about the restaurant. Especially the younger blondes.

His wife Lori probably said "fuck this, you're ending the show or I'm leaving you."

So he ended the show.

But I guess it was so popular that Food Network convinced him to do it again.

His plan was probably to transition Hunter into the hosting job, but Food Network said HELL NO.

It shows you how grossly unfair the wealth gap has become, to give a tv food host 80 million. So much for tv feeling the grip of death when they can throw around that much.

[quote] His late sister, who he clearly loved, was openly gay, right l?

Yes. But she might have been bisexual.

She had a deadbeat ex-husband (or boyfriend) that she had a son with.

After that, she got together with a woman, who she was in a relationship with when she died.

After his sister Morgan died, Guy fought to adopt her son Jules.

I don't think he won, though. However, Jules is now over 18 and appearing on episodes of DDD Home Edition, which are filmed in Guy's ranch.

You're an idiot. And you clearly didn't read the article.

Morgan's partner never had custody of her son Jules.

Guy and his parents were fighting for custody with Jules' FATHER, Dean Pape.

He is supposedly some deadbeat dad who lives in a trailer park.

Guy's real name is Guy "Ferry." (Maybe got teased for being a "fairy"?) According to the post at R80, the sister, Morgan Fieri, has an AKA of "Mimi Ferry." I guess she recreated herself after Guy recreated himself.

Guy sounds really provincial, needing a warning that he's about to be in the presence of a homosexual. The drunken fight with his hairdresser has been documented. How is he so manly, traveling with a hairdresser?

[quote] Why do you suppose he keeps a look that is such a mismatch for his personality?

Funny story about this.

His wife actually commented on how different guy used to be when she first met him.

He was not at all like his television persona.

[quote] Guy Fieri's Wife Lori Says She 'Always' Asks Him to Change His Spiky, Bleach Blonde Hair

The wife of the Food Network star says when she met him he had dark hair and "wore a suit to work every day."

It’s hard to believe there was a time when Guy Fieri didn’t have his bleach blonde tips, but Lori Fieri remembers it well.

The Food Network star’s wife of 24 years tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue, on newsstands now, that when the two first met in 1992 at a California restaurant Guy managed, he looked a whole lot different. “When I first met him, he had no goatee. He had dark hair. He wore a suit to work every day,” she says. “Now I look at him and I’m like, ‘Where’s that man I married with the whole clean look?'”

His now-iconic hairstyle was some what of an accident, says Guy, brought on by his hairdresser at the time and good friend, Christina Jones.

“I was just kind of having one of those moods one day, and said, ‘Just do whatever you want.’ She goes, ‘Whatever I want?’ ‘Whatever you want,'” he recalls. “I get done and I’m like, ‘You gonna wash that out, that shampoo?’ She goes, ‘No, that’s your hair color.’ I’m like, ‘My what!’ It was Friday night at like six o’clock. I had to be at the restaurant. I’m like, ‘No.’ She’s like, ‘Yeah.’ So I put a ball cap on and walked to the restaurant.”

Even after that though, the color was temporary. “It used to be seasonal. Because he used to do red-blonde in the summer for fun. He’d cut it and it was like, really fun,” says Lori, who has two kids with Guy, Hunter, 22, and Ryder, 13. “And then in the winter time, he’d go back to dark.”

“I always say, ‘When are you going to change your haircut?’ But it stuck and it’s him,” she adds. “I tease him every once in a while. And I do want a little change sometimes. But that’s like me changing my hair to black. I mean, I’m not going to do that for him, so.”

Kidding aside, Lori calls Guy a “fantastic person. At the end of the day, I look at him and I still genuinely like him. Starting from the time we wake up in the morning, he pretty much has me laughing.”

With the Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives host on the road so often, the pair cherishes their time together at home in Santa Rosa, California. Rarely, says Lori, will the two venture to a restaurant together.

“Our perfect nights are really barbecuing in the backyard and the kids swimming in the pool,” says Lori. “We just hunker down at home. That’s his happy place.”

Thanks, R96. I wondered because he seems to inspire a misreading of his personality based on the look.

by Anonymousreply 97May 27, 2021 6:19 PM

I give him credit for being married to the same woman he had before fame. However, he does look unhealthy. Sunburnt, bloated, overweight.

A few days ago, Food Network icon Guy Fieri signed a contract extension with the channel, and the terms of the deal look like something that Adam Schefter would tweet in the heat of NFL free agency: Three years, $80 million.

Speaking of Schefter and pro football, how does Fieri's righteous new agreement stack up to some of the league's most notable players?

Quite well, unsurprisingly.

By making a little more than $26 million with Food Network, Fieri checks in at No. 15 and outranks stars like Cleveland's Myles Garrett, Las Vegas' Derek Carr, Chicago's Khalil Mack and San Fran's Trent Williams.

The Washington Football Team player who comes closest to matching Guy, meanwhile, is Landon Collins, whose contract with the Burgundy and Gold carries an AAV of $14 million.

So, what's the lesson here? Well, if you want to become rich, enter a career that's either centered around touchdowns or Flavortown. It's that simple.

I could never watch Diners DD because of the way fat Guy grunted as he took a bite of something. I guess he was going "mmm," but it sounded like he was taking a dump.

by Anonymousreply 108May 27, 2021 10:54 PM

Lol R108 my parents cannot stand watching DDD, but I love it.

They think he's rude and disgusting, and has no manners.

He sticks his hands in the food that the chefs are cooking, and eats straight out of the bowl.

He also drinks sauces straight from the squeeze bottle.

And I've even seen him drink Au Jus out of the dipping bowl.

He has NO CLASS, but I still like him.

I think this is why he does so well with the straight male demographic, which is a major draw for the Food Network. Which is also why they're probably paying him so much money.

by Anonymousreply 109May 28, 2021 1:10 AM

That's true, R109, slobs love Guy.

by Anonymousreply 110May 28, 2021 1:49 AM

That is a lot of money. People basically beg to be on this show. This show does not care about food safety or quality, if you ask people in the neighbor or go by reports. I don't know. If this guy shows up, it basically a sign that you are about to e shut down and you need free advertising.

by Anonymousreply 114May 28, 2021 6:21 AM

How does he still have his hair after all that bleaching?

by Anonymousreply 115May 28, 2021 6:24 AM

The early years of the show were fun because it was just as much a travelogue as a cooking show. But now he's treated like a God by the owners and in some shows he really seems to have a condescending attitude toward some people. He's clearly only in it for the money now.

by Anonymousreply 116May 28, 2021 4:29 PM

I honestly can't imagine having that much money.

I will say I envy his career. He gets to travel, is treated like royalty, can pretty much do whatever he wants.

Food shows leave me cold. I like cooking and I like reading about restaurants but crap like this and the cooking shows always seem annoying.

Maybe I just associate the subject with Julia Child and anything not her eccentric patrician Pasadena persona seems somehow unserious and cheap.

They have actually started featuring Martha Stewart quite heavily, lately.

She started out on Chopped as a judge.

Then they did a pie baking competition at her home in Connecticut.

Then they did an entire Chopped series called "Martha Rules," held at her home in Connecticut.

Now she has her own series (I'm not sure if it's on Food Network Plus or Discovery Plus).

In any case, she's really doing a lot on the network.

Funny how Martha doesn't go to the Food Network. The Food Network comes to Martha.

My gaydar doesn't seem to work with chefs.

I always thought Alton Brown was gay. But he's married, so I guess not.

I also thought Michael Voltaggio was gay, but he has a girlfriend.

Many of us thought Rachel Ray was a lesbian, but she's married (and a heavy drinker).

The only one I'm sure about is that guy from Down Home with the Neelys (aka Downlow with the Neelys). That guy was such a queen. His poor wife seemed clueless.

by Anonymousreply 141June 26, 2021 7:01 PM

Emeril wasn't renewed. I don't know why, could be people were tired of him, he was overexposed elsewhere or it could be they considered him a slob like I did. A friend said they fired him because he was taking over the Food Network, but I don't see them having a problem with Bobby Flay and Guy whatever his real name is now.

The Food Network started a cooking craze that's ruined a lot of things. I just saw an apt for sale in a swanky new building and the kitchen was twice the size of the separate living space.

by Anonymousreply 142June 26, 2021 8:49 PM

by Anonymousreply 150July 1, 2021 7:00 PM

[quote] Chopped used to be kind of fun, now it's just stupid with ridiculous basket ingredients made worse by "Alton's maniacal baskets."

Chopped jumped the shark during the most recent show filmed at Martha Stewart's house.

She was the main judge, along with Mark and Marcus.

It was a four round challenge, with the four winners going to the finale.

In one of the rounds, Martha started walking around and sampling the food, before they chefs were even finished cooking or plating.

Then she made an announcement. Just based on what she had TASTED, even though the dish wasn't even finished, she CHOPPED one of the chefs.

That guy was PISSED. And he said off-camera, that he lost all respect for Martha.

I agreed with him. How are you going to chop someone from the competition, if they haven't even finished cooking???

I know it was probably a gimmick to make the show more "exciting," but it was such an asshole thing to do.

by Anonymousreply 151July 1, 2021 7:05 PM

Wow, I didn't see that, R151. Martha doesn't produce the show, so she has nothing to do with the format. They're probably trying to jazz up an old formula by adding that shit. Martha appreciates the $$$ for being a judge - she's probably under contract for these shows.

by Anonymousreply 152July 1, 2021 7:20 PM

[quote] Chopped used to be kind of fun, now it's just stupid with ridiculous basket ingredients made worse by "Alton's maniacal baskets."

by Anonymousreply 153July 1, 2021 7:28 PM

A little bit of Guy goes a long, long, long way. I can watch maybe a half an episode of DDD at one time and then he forces me to look for a rerun of "The Golden Girls" which is never far away from my remote.

Oh and unless one of the cooks or owners is particularly hot with hairy arms catching my eye. Then, I can endure Guy and his schtick a little longer.

by Anonymousreply 154July 1, 2021 7:43 PM

Emeril can cook circles around most of the Food Network people. I realize that Ramsay has training, but have you seen the way he cooks scrambled eggs? Blech.

by Anonymousreply 155July 1, 2021 7:56 PM

R153, if Chopped is cancelled, it will likely be replaced by one of Guy Fieri's challenges shows. No thanks!

by Anonymousreply 156July 1, 2021 8:00 PM

That Chopped with Martha Stewart, though, is/was actually her own five episode "spin-off" show called "Chopped: Martha Rules." .. It had a reality show element to it, in that it was a tournament with 16 chefs over the five episodes. They said right from the get go that she came up with things to change the rules and give the contestants curve balls. Anyway, they were probably trying to come up with something, ANYTHING to make it different from the old regular dinosaur.

by Anonymousreply 157July 1, 2021 8:12 PM

by Anonymousreply 158July 1, 2021 8:26 PM

Chopped always looked cheap, IMO. Low production values. Compare to Iron Chef, which has high production values.

I also always hated how the judges on Chopped (Aron & Scott Conant) leaned on one arm while chewing food. Looks so dumpy and lazy.

by Anonymousreply 159July 1, 2021 8:30 PM

Scott Conant is trash. Did you see the old Chopped episode where he raked a contestant over the coals because he used raw onions AFTER Scott Conant stated that he had an aversion to them? He used to do all sorts of shit like that. I assumed they talked to him because in subsequent shows, Chopped and others, Conant was on better behavior.

I watched the new Food Network show, "Money Hungry" hosted by Kal Penn.

It basically has taken the taste competition challenge out of Gordan Ramsay's Hell's Kitchen and had tried to turn it into an hour long game show. I found it quite boring.

The only thing worthwhile about is the cute waiter who serves the food. In the first episode, they were just calling him "Bruce," with no additional information.

I noticed in the subsequent episode I watched they were letting Bruce actually talk, and they've now given him a credit on IMDb.

His name is "Bruce Landry." .. He's like "Money Hungry's" Vanna White... lol!

Tyler Florence IS hot.

Guy Ferry is NOT.

And that disgusting-sounding "Jackass" dish in his Food Network try out vid sounds HORRENDOUS. I do not think adding french fries into anything as an "ingredient" is acceptable. I live in Santa Rosa (and have lived in CA for most of my life) and the disgusting "CA style burritos" with french fries are abhorrent. His dishes are just some random ingredients together that you would never think to put together and presented as some great invention, when in fact they are hot trash.

Fieri is extraordinarily popular (I tired of DDD and GGG years ago) because he eats and showcases food that Americans love and which kills them with salt, carbs, etc. He cooks at home with his pals; he travels with his sons; he's a regular "Guy."

I mean, he "made his bones" with a Tater Tot dish! But who amongst us does not love a good Tater Tot, eh?

I now prefer Gordon Ramsay's shows, especially "Uncharted." GF couldn't do one percent of what Ramsay does in hunting, fishing, diving, climbing, and foraging for ingredients!

by Anonymousreply 206September 11, 2021 8:23 PM

by Anonymousreply 208September 11, 2021 10:10 PM

Emeril probably got canned from Food Network probably because he only cooks Cajun Food.

You can do that for a season or two, but you have to be able to branch out and do something else.

Guy's longevity is because he is all over the map. He covers a multitude of cuisines. You could say he does it all. Plus he has the personality. And the attractive family. And no scandals.

The guy could practically run for Governor or President, and he could actually win. That's how popular he is.

Even Ree Drummond discovered that she had to start cooking other things. She was seriously running out of ideas.

Now she's doing veggie dishes and low carb and keto and healthy and shit.

Emeril was pretty one dimensional, so his tenure on the network was unsustainable.

I was watching a Guy Fieri special this past weekend on Food Network, and it was really good.
