Flight attendant loses 2 teeth in assault by passenger

A Southwest Airlines flight attendant was assaulted by a passenger and lost two teeth in the attack last weekend, according to a union president, who complained to the airline’s CEO about unruly passengers.

“Unfortunately, this is just one of many occurrences,” said the union president, Lyn Montgomery. She said there were 477 incidents of “misconduct” by passengers on Southwest planes between April 8 and May 15.

A Southwest spokesman said Tuesday that the incident happened Sunday morning after a flight from Sacramento landed in San Diego and involved a female passenger.

“The passenger repeatedly ignored standard inflight instructions and became verbally and physically abusive upon landing,” said the spokesman, Chris Mainz. He said police were asked to meet the plane when it arrived in San Diego, and the passenger was taken into custody.

Neither the passenger nor the flight attendant were identified. The flight attendant went to a hospital for treatment and was later released. Southwest flew a friend to San Diego to be with her.

The Federal Aviation Administration said Monday that airlines have reported 2,500 incidents of unruly passengers this year, including 1,900 cases in which passengers refused to wear face masks, which are required by federal rule. The FAA provided those numbers as it announced it was seeking civil penalties totaling $54,500 against five passengers for behavior ranging from refusing to wear a mask to assaulting flight attendants.

“I’ve been in the industry since 1992, and this is the worst ever,” Montgomery said in an interview. “People seem to be more angry. When they’re asked to do something, compliance seems to be more difficult.”

Southwest and most airlines train flight attendants to de-escalate tense situations with unhappy travelers. Montgomery said those tactics are growing less effective and a small number of passengers are becoming bolder in challenging the authority of crew members.

Montgomery, the president of Local 556 of the Transport Workers Union, wrote about the weekend attack in a letter to Southwest CEO Gary Kelly.

Montgomery asked Kelly to lobby federal officials for more federal air marshals on flights and to ban passengers who violate rules instead of putting them on another flight. She said flight attendants are concerned about Southwest's plan to resume selling alcohol on board planes. Many recent cases that have caught FAA’s attention involving passengers who were drinking.

You treat people like animals, that's what you get.

by Anonymousreply 1May 25, 2021 7:12 PM

Haha, R1.

Totally!

The only problem is that corporate million dollar execs are the ones making the decisions and treating people like SHIT, but it's the line people: Pilots, Flight Attendants, etc. who bear the brunt of this bad behavior.

Fucking 1%er CUNTS!

by Anonymousreply 2May 25, 2021 7:15 PM

People have gone fucking feral. I swear to Christ, Trump lowering the bar on presidential behavior lowered acceptable behavior standards for everyone.

In many cities, it's a felony to assault a transit worker.

Frankly, it should be a felony to ignore the passenger safety instructions of flight attendants.

I was once on a flight where some idiot was mouthing off about her rights and smoking on the plane. When the plane landed, law enforcement took her into custody. She started crying and saying she was sorry. boo-f'ing-hoo.

by Anonymousreply 5May 25, 2021 7:32 PM

What's more - Sacramento to San Diego is only a 1 1/2 hour flight; so the crazy bitch wasn't in the air that long

People do seem to have lost their minds; yes, the airlines are partially to blame for this shit, but you can't keep it together for 2 hours on a Sunday morning?

by Anonymousreply 6May 25, 2021 7:34 PM

R2, no, and I have no love for million dollar fatcat CEOs. People are behaving in an entitled manner, have little self-control, and don't respect others.

Yesterday I had to clench my teeth listening to a story told by one friend to another about how her daughter called Direct TV and bitched out a hapless phone rep because my friend didn't get a remote with her new DVR and DTV wanted to charge her for a replacement. Apparently the call was complete with foul language and threats. Why? Why not explain the situation calmly and escalate if necessary?

I've heard from others that travelling is a real bitch right now. Everyone is on edge and some people are eager to go on their little vaycays. Nothing and no one will ruin their fun or get in their way because in their minds they deserve the entitlement after suffering a year being cooped up at home. If some lady wants to take her baggage out of the overhead compartment while the seatbelt sign is still on, get in her way and she'll punch a bitch.

by Anonymousreply 11May 28, 2021 12:27 AM

Fucking trash is what the problem is. People are full on trash nowadays. R3 said it best - feral fucking animals.

This is why I always pay more to fly on a decent airline with decent people. And when a flight attendant tells you to do something - you do it. It's not a negotiation or a suggestion - "sit down and put your seat-belt on" is an order to keep you and everyone else safe and controlled. How the violent trash woman who assaulted the flight attendant even managed to fit her grossly obese fat ass in that seat is a miracle in the first place.

by Anonymousreply 12May 28, 2021 12:29 AM

r11, that is describing EVERY SINGLE American. Entitled is the key word.

by Anonymousreply 13May 28, 2021 12:30 AM

[quote] “Apparently what she did was stood up and took off her seat belt and the flight attendant told her to put it back on and she attacked her,” Susan Stidham, who was on the flight, said.

[quote] Another witness to the assault, Taro Arai, said the attack was violent.

[quote] “…they start shoving each other and the next I saw was ‘Don’t touch me!’ They start yelling, the lady stood up and pound! She just knocked her out on the floor.” Arai said.

O.M.G.

The only bright spot in this story, is Taro's description of "the lady stood up and pound!"

Rofl.

by Anonymousreply 14May 28, 2021 12:30 AM

Why is it AWAYS the fat asses who are the worst behaved? It's always obese cunts!

by Anonymousreply 15May 28, 2021 12:31 AM

R2 The main reason airlines can keep cutting corners and is because market forces demand it. Plebs want cheaper air fares and airlines are all too happy to offer a worse product in order to get more people flying and thus more profit. It's a race to the bottom and everyone is at fault.

by Anonymousreply 16May 28, 2021 12:31 AM

I have had too many drinks on a flight before but have never even considered crossing a flight attendant about rules/regs/direction before/during/after flight. Fuck you if you can't handle less than 2 hours of not being in total control of your kingdom. She should be charged with as many crimes as applicable and fully prosecuted. IDGAF if you are "triggered" because we've been in lockdown for all this time, blah blah blah. You are not special or entitled, you need to abide by the rules JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE. Fucktard.

by Anonymousreply 37May 28, 2021 2:40 AM

Airlines are scumbag liars. Also, the video does not match the airline's statements about this situation. They already are caught lying.

Also, you have to be vaccinated to fly. Is she vaccinated or not? They got into her personal space, which is not right at all.

The questions are: Is she vaccinated? Does she have a ticket? Why was she being harassed by the airline staff? They started the whole thing.

by Anonymousreply 38May 28, 2021 2:50 AM

ALSO r36 the two CUNTS with that fat cunt should be charged as accessories to that crime. Those two obese cunts were barking with the fat ass who hit the women but they did NOTHING to stop their fat ass cunt friend. Drunk or not! Fuck all three!

by Anonymousreply 39May 28, 2021 2:58 AM

Nothing about your reply is substantiated r38. There is NO OTHER VIDEO to show she was being harassed, just one possible MAGAT who had A LOT of opinions about whether the flight attendant's requests were reasonable or harassing.

by Anonymousreply 40May 28, 2021 2:58 AM

Flight attendants should carry guns.

by Anonymousreply 41May 28, 2021 3:09 AM

it looks like this. The flight attendant attacks this woman who was sitting down. Then, a man got bwtn them. The flight attendant was not knock out at all and is clearly standing up.

The airline is lying. Their statement does not match this video. Also, the 2 witnesses have conflicting statements. Neither statement looks to be correct.

Airlines are scum, always lie about what occurs. I think a good lawyer could get her off, if she is vaccinated. If she is not vaccinated, then she should not be on this plane to begin with.

by Anonymousreply 42May 28, 2021 3:11 AM

we really have to improve the airlines here and passenger rights. Other countries have figured this out. I do not want some flight attendant to attack me. I do not want to be near an unvaccinated person.

There needs to be more personal space per passenger (and just more space in general). This is 100% the airline's fault.

by Anonymousreply 43May 28, 2021 3:15 AM

remember when that man was attacked on the plane. Airlines, some passengers and the airport security all lied to the press.

by Anonymousreply 44May 28, 2021 3:17 AM

airlines are unable to operate airlines safely now. Shut this down. People need more room on planes.

by Anonymousreply 45May 28, 2021 3:19 AM

This is why I invested in noise canceling headphones and got a prescription for Ambien for long trips, because invariably someone brings a crying baby or an autistic child on their first flight. And I also don’t fly on trashy domestic cheap flights full of ghetto cunts like this. You get what you pay for.

by Anonymousreply 46May 28, 2021 3:26 AM

Ain’t no way to treat a lady...,

by Anonymousreply 47May 28, 2021 3:47 AM

The fact that the flight was leaving Sacramento tells me all I need to know. Sacramento is full of rude, white trash.

by Anonymousreply 48May 28, 2021 3:55 AM

r42 : and here is where your assertion starts and ends: "it looks like this"

because all we have is the "final" apparent encounter between the stupid passenger and the flight attendant. NO OTHER VIDEO BEFORE THAT TO DOCUMENT FLIGHT ATTENDANT BEING OBNOXIOUS/ABUSE. just some bitch who took a vid from a flight originating out of MAGAt land trying to "explain" this was the end of the "abuse" by the flight attendant.

Also we have the evidence of over 250 incidences like this with regard to face mask violations since Feb.

by Anonymousreply 49May 28, 2021 3:58 AM

Fly foreign airlines whenever possible.

by Anonymousreply 50May 28, 2021 3:58 AM

some passengers are saying it was the flight attendant's fault. This flight attendant attacked this person first and the passenger told the flight attendant to let go and stop. Also, passengers are reporting that this flight attendant was harassing them too.

The iphone video is heavily edited.

Airlines lie all the time.

by Anonymousreply 51May 28, 2021 4:45 AM

I hope she goes to jail and when she gets out she is banned from all airlines.

by Anonymousreply 52May 28, 2021 4:49 AM

r51 AGAIN, NO EVIDENCE.

by Anonymousreply 53May 28, 2021 4:51 AM

We need more room and personal space on planes. This is not right. I don't want a flight attendant (or passengers) in my personal space. It's all wrong. Airlines always start shit with people. I am telling you this: Do not trust the airlines, they lie all the time.

if she is vaccinated, I hope she gets a good lawyer. If she is not vaccinated, she should not be able to board the plane in the first place.

by Anonymousreply 54May 28, 2021 4:54 AM

I hope the flight attendant can sue

by Anonymousreply 55May 28, 2021 4:57 AM

So the takeaway I'm getting from one particular poster is.... because there is too little room per passenger on planes today, that means that the flight attendants deserve to get punched in the face? Interesting.

by Anonymousreply 56May 28, 2021 4:57 AM

Seriously. do they feel the same way during a vax or blood draw or other necessary treatment because they didn't vax and are now sick? FUCK YOU. do you want to survive? well then shut the fuck up and pipe down.

by Anonymousreply 57May 28, 2021 5:02 AM

it looks like the flight attendant attacked the passenger from behind. It is a heavily edited iphone tape. also, other passengers are saying it was the flight attendant fault.

Do not believe the airline. They always are caught lying. hopefully, she gets a good lawyer, if is she is vaccinated.

by Anonymousreply 58May 28, 2021 5:02 AM

[quote]it looks like the flight attendant attacked the passenger from behind.

From where? Do you have a video link for this?

by Anonymousreply 59May 28, 2021 5:04 AM

by Anonymousreply 60May 28, 2021 5:08 AM

R43

[quote]There needs to be more personal space per passenger (and just more space in general). This is 100% the airline's fault.

The cost of increasing space per passenger would be passed onto the consumer. Jamming people into planes like sardines isn't fun but it keeps costs down. That's capitalism for you.

by Anonymousreply 61May 28, 2021 5:10 AM

So I guess the answer to my question is "no", R60.

by Anonymousreply 62May 28, 2021 5:11 AM

r60 still hearsay. Dismissed, MAGAT. Go away, you fucking don't pass go and collect 200 bucks as much as you want to.

by Anonymousreply 63May 28, 2021 5:16 AM

something has to be done about the airlines and space per passenger. The airlines are really out of hand. This was happening before the covid pandemic.

by Anonymousreply 64May 28, 2021 5:17 AM

I blocked r60, who is obviously Trump trash—and all the other objectionable posts *magically* disappeared.

by Anonymousreply 65May 28, 2021 5:19 AM

In a Democracy, a person has the right to a lawyer, to a fair trial and a defense. This passenger could win a case against the airline, but only if she was vaccinated. If she is not vaccinated then she does not have a case, she should not be on this plane, in the first place. Why did the flight attendant grab her? That is wrong.

by Anonymousreply 66May 28, 2021 5:21 AM

#stopflightattendanthate

by Anonymousreply 67May 28, 2021 5:24 AM

I do not think this woman should be tried in a kangaroo court on DL. Airlines are really getting out of control. They are changes they could make to make it more safety to fly. More space and room per passenger. Other countries have figure this out. Something has to be done to make this safer.

by Anonymousreply 68May 28, 2021 5:25 AM

Has one of the passenger's "live laugh love" girlfriends descended onto this thread? We have enough fraus on DL as it is.

by Anonymousreply 69May 28, 2021 5:26 AM

imagine, if you were seated next to them, or someone you cared about. This is not safe for anyone. Airlines have to make changes.

Also, why leak this heavily edited video to the press? Why not the WHOLE video, if they are going to leak something?

by Anonymousreply 70May 28, 2021 5:48 AM

r20 thank god someone of value; so sick of this shiat from deplorables.

by Anonymousreply 71May 28, 2021 5:56 AM

There's a new video (can't link). This trashy fat bitch passenger is going down.

by Anonymousreply 72May 28, 2021 6:16 AM

the flight attendant was attacking (or harassing) other passengers. There are witnesses that are siding with the passenger who got arrested. The witness accounts of what happen are different. The airline statement is clearly false though.

by Anonymousreply 73May 28, 2021 6:17 AM

when jail is more comfortable then an airplane. Let this sick in for you. Something is wrong.

by Anonymousreply 74May 28, 2021 6:21 AM

"sick in?" lol go to bed.

by Anonymousreply 75May 28, 2021 6:23 AM

by Anonymousreply 77May 28, 2021 6:31 AM

the airline statements are false. Also, there are passengers that are siding with the woman who got arrested. The phone tape is edited too. Apparently, the flight attendant was harassing other passengers too and it was an ordeal.

Passengers should not be harassed or assaulted while travelling either.

by Anonymousreply 78May 28, 2021 6:38 AM

did you see the guy who is the airline's star witness? I am sorry, but that is not a good case. Airlines that lie, do not believe them. Add Southwest to the list.

by Anonymousreply 79May 28, 2021 6:40 AM

if you cannot manage a flight safety, you need to be SHUT DOWN. SouthWest you put everyone on that plane at risk. This is unacceptable.

by Anonymousreply 80May 28, 2021 6:42 AM

please get me off the damn plane and get me to a jail, more room. This should be the new jiggle from Southwest. What say you?

by Anonymousreply 81May 28, 2021 6:45 AM

it appears that the passenger that was arrested has a strong case against the flight attendant (thus the airline). the airline's statements are not accurate. Moreover, there are witnesses the support the arrested passenger. They also had problems with the same flight attendant.

They will drop charges.

by Anonymousreply 82May 28, 2021 6:56 AM

I am sure that fear of flying is increasing. This is nuts. Can we fire all the American carriers and use European carriers like Swiss air?

The last short flight I took was in 2014 to Vegas and people were acting up like crazy, and some of the same people were on my flight back as well and the flight attendants had to split them up, and were calling ahead to the terminal for security. It was barely 1 hr 15 minutes and they couldn't control themselves. These were men my age so early 40s at the time and way too old to be behaving like high schoolers on their first overnight trip.

There was also one lady in her 30s who kept staring and snarling at me and my partner the entire time, it started when I ordered a soda and snack from the cart, and I heard this passenger gasp. Because I got Dr Pepper I guess? No idea but she was livid, she looked like she was ready to start something at the slightest provocation. It was miserable. People are nuts and they don't even realize it.

by Anonymousreply 92May 29, 2021 12:51 AM

I flew Delta and United (4 flights in total) last October and everyone seemed civil there. Otherwise, everything was fine and relaxed for the most part. No alcoholic drinks on plane though which kind of sucked :(

Southwest Airlines captain is given probation for exposing his genitals and watching porn in front of female pilot while at the controls of a 737

Michael Haak, 60, apologized and expressed remorse for his actions before U.S. Magistrate Judge J. Mark Coulson sentenced him to one year of unsupervised probation and a $5,000 fine.

'It started as a consensual prank between me and the other pilot. I never imagined it would turn into this in a thousand years,' Haak said during a remote hearing.

Federal prosecutors said that Haak had never met the first officer before that flight bound for Orlando on August 10, 2020. After the plane reached its cruising altitude, Haak got out of the pilot's seat, 'disrobed' and began watching pornographic material on a laptop computer in the cockpit, prosecutors said.

As the plane continued its flight, Haak further engaged in inappropriate conduct in the cockpit, as the first officer continued to perform her duties as an assigned aircrew member,' the statement says.

The first officer submitted a statement to the court but didn't speak during Friday's hearing. The judge told Haak that his actions had a traumatic effect on the co-pilot and could have impacted the safety of passengers and other co-workers.

Haak 'had a duty to comport himself in a much more responsible manner,' Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Cunningham said.

'This is not the kind of aberrant behavior that anyone should accept,' the prosecutor added.

Cunningham said the first officer 'unfortunately suffered some consequences' as a result of the incident that Haak 'didn't have anything to do with,' but he didn't elaborate.

'She had a right not to be subjected to this kind of behavior, regardless of what may have motivated it or prompted it,' the prosecutor said.

Haak was charged in April with intentionally committing a lewd, indecent or obscene act in a public place, a misdemeanor punishable by a maximum of 90 days in jail. He was charged in Maryland because it was one of the states that the aircraft passed over that day.

Federal prosecutors agreed to recommend a sentence of probation without requiring Haak to register as a sex offender. The judge wasn't bound by that recommendation.

Haak, a resident of Longwood, Florida, was a Southwest Airlines pilot for 27 years until his retirement. His last flight for the Dallas-based airline was on August 31, 2020, three weeks after the incident that led to the criminal charge.

Southwest spokesperson Chris Mainz said in a statement that the airline 'does not tolerate behavior of this nature and will take prompt action if such conduct is substantiated.'

Southwest only learned of Haak's behavior after he voluntarily left the airline, according to Mainz.

'Nonetheless, Southwest did investigate the matter and as a result, ceased paying Mr. Haak any benefits he was entitled to receive as a result of his separation from (the airline),' Mainz said.

Defense attorney Michael Salnick said Haak had a sterling career as a commercial pilot and received numerous accolades and supportive letters from passengers and colleagues, including one from Southwest chairman and CEO Gary Kelly on the day of Haak's retirement.

'We are blessed that Southwest has been your home for so many years,' Kelly wrote.

Haak accepts responsibility for his conduct and 'offers no excuses,' his lawyer said in a court filing.

'What began as a consensual prank at the encouragement of Mr. Haak's co-pilot has certainly grown into something Michael Haak never anticipated,' Salnick wrote. 'He is sorry and remorseful for his actions.'

Salnick argued that Haak deserves a lenient sentence given his 'lifetime of hard work and kindness.'

'The embarrassment and resulting publicity of this incident has in and of itself been humbling to Michael Haak and has served as punishment in many ways,' he wrote.

r37 ITSteve: I (alone, without IT) figured out that after a certain number (ie: too many) folders, it would only number them from the last one made. That proved useful, in the end. Thanks for your "help."
