I think it’s ok, but not my favorite. The self-congratuting is a little too “we’re going to do what American do in pop music and brag because that’s swag.”
I like stuff like Magic Shop, Mikrokosmos, Epiphany, Euphoria.

R7 of course they mostly lip sync for live performances because of how much they dance, but those are their (overly produced) voices. So the comparison doesn't hold.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | May 24, 2021 10:51 PM |
I'm sure it will be popular. It helps that it's sung in English. A lot of K-pop crosses over to the American market because the music, singing, and rapping copy musical genres that started in America. At least BTS dance and dance well, something One Direction couldn't do (a boy band that can't dance, what's up with that?). However, songs in Korean won't connect with a lot of people here. This is America, after all.

My favorite BTS song is "Singularity" a beautiful ballad in the style D'Angelo that appears on their album Love Yourself: Tear (the only album together with Wings that I like) which has Yukio Mishima's book as a reference. These happy songs like Butter are nice to hear but they don't excite me so much.

One would think that, but Americans have started singing Korean. It's the radio play that is the problem.

GTFO. BTS are known among Koreans as the “not-that-handsome, but lovable” group. Cf. Exo.

Look again, they're not lip-syncing in their SNL performance and SNL forbids it. They've had years of dancing and training so their cardio is at their peak. There's also 7 of them so they take turns singing.

I think their dancing is very good, and kind of see them as this generation's Britney-type pop. Their singing is okay and the songs are catchy. I definitely love the purple hair on one of them. I don't care at all about their plastic surgery alterations because almost EVERY pop singer gets facial upgrades. Theirs might be a bit more than most but they are not Michael Jackson level. I'm sort of fascinated by them because how can 7 guys dance so synchronously? There is definitely a market for this.

Practice non-stop, work and live 24 hours with your fellow bandmates, sacrifice your personal life. I don't think Western artists are cutout for that kind of life but I hear the K-pop companies will make an American reality tv show to find the next Western K-pop band.

by Anonymous | reply 39 | May 25, 2021 7:11 AM |
They actually practice singing while running on a treadmill so they can control their breath during the dances. They don't lip-sync, but , during the heavy dance numbers, sing with a vocal backing track to keep the vocals solid, much like Broadway shows have during dance numbers. There is no backing track during ballads or non-dance numbers.

BTS is known for their extremely diverse fanbase that ranges from as young as children aged 8 or below to people over 60 or 70 in age.
Men, women, children and seniors, are all fans of the band regardless of anything. So it was only rightful that ARMYs would not like the constant stereotyping of the whole fandom to be seen as ‘little girls‘.
People rightfully called out this phrase and also the media’s constant reiteration that BTS has mostly young female fans.
It was shown in a BTS demographic that 76% of their audiences are female, while 24% of their audiences are male.
An Instyle report had talked about the growing interest of BTS among women who were in their 30s, 40s, 50s and so on.
They mentioned a Facebook group called Bangtan Moms & Noonas that has more than 500 members all comprising of people from 20 years old to those in their 60s.
57-year-old Nan Paturzo who started the group stated that “I tell my husband this all the time — BTS makes me happy. I enjoy what they say in their music. I believe in their sincerity. It’s so reassuring to have that presence in my life.”

I think BTS is having the same thing happen that happened to Facebook. First, it was all young people with their shiny new thing. Then, older people started getting on Facebook and it was no longer shiny and new so the younger people now avoid it like the plague. Now, it's all old people and corporations. BTS will be over in two years max.

They do not lip sync during live performances, but use a track to help fill in the heavy dance sections, as they use in Broadway shows.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | May 25, 2021 8:16 PM |
As everyone who has ever been affiliated with making films or videos, sections are filmed countless times. If someone had to sing live so many times, the voice would be destroyed. Also, BTS is notorious for being very bad at lip synching, which is why there can be inconsistencies on video. But, unlike many contemporary entertainers, they sing their live appearances.

BTS has made so much money for their company, BigHit has become a conglomerate and changed their name to HYBE. They bought out a lot of smaller Korean Entertainment companies and Scotty Braun's company (in essence, they now own Taylor Swift's songs) and has built a HUGE building the artists frequently get lost in.
The problem is what will happen when they go to the military next year or their hype dies down. How will HYBE support itself without BTS?
by Anonymous | reply 61 | May 26, 2021 12:09 AM |
Don't be too sure that they will be going into the military. Look at the economic impact vs 7 soldiers for 18 months:
In late 2018, researchers reported that BTS generated an estimated 4 trillion won ($3.54 billion USD) per year, in addition to an annual 1.42 trillion won ($3.67 billion) in added value. In the same year, a study from the Hyundai Research Institute highlighted that for every 1% increase in search volume for BTS, Korean clothing exports increased by 0.18%, cosmetics by 0.72% and food by 0.45%. Reports predicted that if the band maintained its global success until 2023, the group should generate over 56 trillion won ($49.8 billion USD) between 2014-2023, surpassing the economic effect of 2018’s PyeongChang Winter Olympics, which amounted to a mere 41.6 trillion won in comparison.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | May 26, 2021 12:21 AM |
They've already been around since 2012 but will soon have to enlst and serve two years in the Korean military which may bring their careers to a natural end. A band called Enhypen are supposed to be the successors.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | May 26, 2021 12:53 AM |
You only get one star boyband frontman per generation. Robbie Williams for Gen X, Justin Timberlake for Millennials, Harry Styles for Gen Z. Nobody from BTS qualifies.

It was the international popularity of BTS, particularly “Dynamite,” that ultimately prompted Korean lawmakers to introduce the bill, which essentially carves an idol-shaped exemption in the Military Service Act. In October, ruling party member Noh Woong-rae pushed the legislation forward on behalf of the band, arguing that its members should be allowed to serve the nation in other ways to meet its service requirements. And those who have advocated in the past for changing this law have frequently cited BTS in their arguments. “I think that members of BTS should also get the exemption,” speedskater Song Kyung-taek told the New York Times in 2018 when discussing the draft. “When South Koreans go abroad, we can mention BTS to explain where we come from.”

They received shares in Hybe when the IPO happened. ~68,500 shares each. Those shares are worth about $15 million for each member now (link).
They have many endorsement deals, including with Samsung, Hyundai, Louis Vuitton.

Or are you trying to say that because posters on Datalounge don't think they are masculine and point out the excessive makeup and plastic surgery is being racist?
This is a band which is artificially manufactured and aggressively marketed towards very young girls - 10 years and under is the target audience - and the aim is to make lots of money in Asian countries. They are very successful in that but obviously not to everybody's taste.

by Anonymous | reply 91 | May 26, 2021 4:09 PM |
R88, to be fair, only Jin, Jungkook, and Jin are considered visuals in Korea. The rest are cute, but they're not considered particularly handsome. I personally really like RM's appearance and personality, but he's commonly hated-on being "unattractive", as is J-Hope.
I don't know how anyone not dedicated to another boy group (far wars), or coming from a place of ethnic hatred, could have such animosity towards them. I'm not a fan of their deals with McDonald's and Louis Vuitton (animal rights), or Jin's unintentional promotion of sugar gliders as pets (he says he regrets having revealed he has two), but I like their music and their personas just fine.
They make music enjoyed by many different types of people from varied backgrounds. They're polite, kind, and they try to stay positive and put-together to make people happy.
They took a huge risk with a startup company, 6 out of 7 didn't grow up privileged (Jin is the only one who comes from money), at least two (V and Suga) grew up very poor, and they work very, very hard.
They contribute to society, e.g., donations to BLM (not a fan of BLM myself, but it's a contribution), work for UNICEF.
Maybe a person who's actually listened to them might not like their music, but what's to hate or be vicious about?

Blatantly untrue. You seem to think that men can't be masculine unless they're tall, broad and muscle-bound. What a narrow and dated perspective, Grandad. Let's guess, you like Kai from Exo because he happens to be 6ft 2.
by Anonymous | reply 96 | May 26, 2021 6:02 PM |
Hybe was clever: it IPO'd and then immediately set about acquiring more companies, thereby diversifying its sources of income. They're perfectly aware BTS won't be around forever: the point is to let shares ride the wave of their popularity, and use the hype-inflated shares to buy other assets. AOL did the same when it bought Time Warner, but that turned out badly because they bought the wrong company.

That is actually the definition of masculine. Those things are caused by testosterone. Only a person who has a problem with a more fine-boned and slender man accurately being referred to as either feminine or less masculine would by a misogynist who thinks being feminine is an insult. So, I guess you are a misogynist because they are definitely on the feminine end of the masculine/feminine spectrum.

R102, that's a compliment to Western culture and its huge influence on the world. You can also say Elvis and the Beatles were a white-washed version of black music.
The problem I have with K-pop is it looks like a lot of hard work and sacrifice for the Kpop idols and if they are compensated fairly. I worry about their mental health. In a way, the pandemic gave them a rest.

On stage, they usually sing with a background vocal track lending support. Every boy group does but most girl groups don’t because the dancing is much harder for the former.

Forbes says that BTS made $50 million last year, but I heard that HYBE keeps most of it, and the boys have to split what's left 7 ways.
by Anonymous | reply 110 | May 27, 2021 2:54 PM |
R110 at this point it's probably 50%-50% with Hybe. That's how it is for successful, more senior groups. They renewed their contract in 2018, when they were already a big deal, so I'm sure they got the 50%-50% split or better. Forbes ... I wouldn't take them too seriously when it comes to the net worth of private individuals, vs. revenues from concerts, etc.
But if you really need to believe they're not as wealthy as your favorites, and aren't on track to being so, go ahead. GINI coefficients matter to me, so it's nice to imagine they're not that wealthy.
Harry Styles is a centimillionaire, while each member of BTS is probably only worth $30 million max. Feel better?
by Anonymous | reply 111 | May 27, 2021 3:02 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 112 | May 27, 2021 3:03 PM |
They would be richer than HS now if they were getting a decent share of the profits they make, but no Korean act gets that. Blackpink are still living in a shared house.
The idea that bts is getting 50% of their profits because they resigned in 2018 is laughable to me. No band gets that unless they're fully independent of a label.

[quote] . Blackpink are still living in a shared house.
That's their dorm, silly. BTS lives in a dorm. Groups trade-up your dorm as it becomes more successful, but they remain in a dorm.
Exo lives in a dorm, as does Seventeen. You buy luxury homes for you parents and yourself, but you live in a dorm most of the year.
You know nothing.
50% is absolutely normal for big names.

I'm sorry, but R113, if you didn't know that even top groups live in dorms, you're in no position to say anything about the industry. Jesus.
by Anonymous | reply 117 | May 27, 2021 3:43 PM |
Exo's dorm. They even still rack-try some clothes.
Groups and idols are humble like that.

Jesus, they really are treated like prisoners. And if they get 50% of the profits, why are they still only worth 20m each? Make it make sense, you 110lb dumbass.

R120, I said they're probably worth $30 million by now, given their shares are worth $15 million each.

Putting aside all of the " They look like girls," arguments, which I remember being the same during the initial exposure of The Beatles, the appeal of BTS to a huge audience ( most of whom don't speak Korean) is due to something that is uncommon in today's pop music. The group has hit a chord with its audience in its message. Disregard songs like " Dynamite," and, to an extent " Butter," which were made for summertime play in the English-speaking countries, and listen to the lyrics of songs such as " Magic Shop," which speaks directly to a young generation ( and some many older folk) who are going through the natural struggles of simply growing up. They lack confidence, and feel as if they are lost. BTS speaks directly to them and acknowledges the fact that it was their fandom that lifted them from not being allowed on Korean music shows, because they were not from a big company and destined to fail. This acknowledgment of the importance of their Army has made the fandom even stronger, and the group has captured that loyalty, to the point of semi-fanaticism. So, if you care to listen to " Magic Shop," you can see this relationship. You may not care for the song or the performers, but you have to see the popularity, which cannot be dismissed. If you don't like it, that's fine. But realize that millions of their fans get real comfort from their words.
The song “Magic Shop” was originally based on a memoir called Into the Magic Shop by American neurosurgeon James Doty. One of the most poignant lines in BTS’s much-loved “Magic Shop” is, “I won’t say clichéd things like ‘have strength’“. Instead of playing into those clichés, the song’s lyrics focus on real psychological techniques used to help people struggling with their mental health

They all look like they are transitioning and each of them is wearing more makeup than Mariah Carey. And she trowels it on.
The answer is none of them R121. They are the furthermost thing from sexy that I have ever seen. They look like Ken dolls with no genitals and women's heads.

They kinda remind me of Duran Duran. Nice suits with tons of makeup. Instead of a supermodel, a stack of pancakes.

I recognise your tone, Klan Granny/Welp Troll. One of the most vicious racists on this site. Of course Asian men don't look like men to you but white British men do. You are shameless and revolting.

RM of BTS wrote the lyrics for TXT's new song- LoveSong. The lyrics are heartbreaking and hopeful, the same message as Save Me which made BTS initially famous.

R133, I was just about to post that video. I love it. TXT's comeback show posted yesterday as well. It's cute.

Hot Korean guys are Lee Byung-Hun, Daniel Henney, Daniel Dae-Kim, Eugene Lee Yang, Rick Yune and Steven Yeun. They look like real people. BTS and other Kpop boys are way too polished looking that it's creepy.

Yeah, not everyone can learn English just by watching an American sitcom. He may not have the looks or dancing ability but he's the underrated genius behind BTS. He's involved in almost every song and writes most of the lyrics.

I'm seeing a lot of people say BTS is too feminine and waifish. If you see them without their shirts, they're all pretty athletic looking, so I don't understand the criticism.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | June 2, 2021 6:20 PM |
Too bad they are rarely shirtless, R141. They even wear shirts while swimming if it's part of their show.

You don't understand why people say they look like females? Is this really true?
by Anonymous | reply 143 | June 3, 2021 12:54 PM |
For those who say Kpop boybands look too feminine, check out Monsta X. They've made an effort to be the antithesis to BTS (although they still wear too much makeup) and their image is the masculine, overly testosterone-filled bad boys.
I don't usually listen to them but their latest MV is trending like crazy. The beat is seductive and the editing of the dance and action scenes are well done.

by Anonymous | reply 147 | June 6, 2021 1:12 AM |
Apparently there's a new unnamed group coming up whose members are currently only 14/15 but they've been specially selected so they have large blue or green eyes and are taller and more 'manly' - but still have the delicate Korean prettiness in their features and the super silky dark hair. All are bi-lingual. Look out for these as they have huge cross over appeal. Think Jungkook crossed with Harry Styles.

BTS stands for Bullshit Trans Shit
by Anonymous | reply 149 | June 6, 2021 1:20 AM |
I had no idea BTS was short for something until I saw the OP. They are derivative of Japanese boy bands, especially SMAP. Even the name sounds like a Japanese boy band name (Bodan Shonendan) in Japanese (Compare to Bangtan sonyeondan in Korean).

R151 that initial thing is common practice among the groups.

Why do Kpop bands color their hair with unnatural colors? They look washed out when they color their hair yellow or a God-awful blue.
