The Girl on the Train (2016) is absolute SHIT!

What a waste of time this film was. It was so bad. God Emily Blunt’s acting was terrible. Just terrible! And Justin Theroux as the bad guy? Who didn’t see that coming from a mile away?

They were very obviously trying to capture what Gone Girl did before it, but failed.

Emily Blunt doesn’t work as a lead but Hollywood keeps pushing her.

Also WHET Haley Bennett? She was being pushed as the next big thing for a second, and suddenly cast in tons of things then out of nowhere she vanished.

I laughed at Blunt's "drunk" scenes. What a mess!

by Anonymousreply 1May 23, 2021 10:01 PM

R1 me too! And I remember people praising her performance after the movie came out, with her even being in Oscar talk and some were outraged when she didn’t get nominated. Why? She was AWFUL! The whole film is a mess. Theroux doesn’t even look like he wants to be there, Bennett looks like a Dollar Tree J Law, Luke Evans is underused, and the script is terrible.

Rebecca Ferguson was the only decent thing

by Anonymousreply 2May 23, 2021 10:04 PM

I think she’s an awful actress any way but you could tell she did no research into what being an alcoholic is like. She simply went through the motions. A younger Naomi Watts would’ve nailed the part.

by Anonymousreply 3May 23, 2021 10:13 PM

All I really remember is her stumbling around that park like a drunken idiot.

by Anonymousreply 4May 23, 2021 10:14 PM

R3 100% agree. She was great in The Devil Wears Prada, her breakout role, but since then? She’s sucked.

by Anonymousreply 5May 23, 2021 10:15 PM

She was good in Prada (and nothing since) but I feel she just played herself: a snarky and sarcastic b*tch

by Anonymousreply 6May 23, 2021 10:18 PM

She’s always sucked

by Anonymousreply 7May 24, 2021 12:55 AM

I read the book.. not a masterpiece of writing but good, fun entertainment and it was funny how the main character kept sneaking cans of alcohol on the train every day.

by Anonymousreply 8May 24, 2021 12:59 AM

I, too, thought Blunt would have a great career after The Devil Wears Prada. But that's really been her only strong performance.

The Girl on the Train was indeed shit. But, to be fair, the book was terrible too. I remember reading it and hating the lead character. Blunt made her slightly more likable but just barely..

Haley Bennett fucked director Joe Wright who was married to Anoushka Shankar. They shacked up and had a kid. Bennett's social media is strange. Odd woman.

by Anonymousreply 9May 28, 2021 1:11 AM

Well, it was no Woman in the Window.

by Anonymousreply 10May 28, 2021 3:42 AM

After you see Dear Evan Hansen, you will have wished it was Girl on the Train.

by Anonymousreply 11May 28, 2021 3:44 AM

R8 The book was schlock.

by Anonymousreply 12May 28, 2021 3:44 AM

Emily Blunt gets to go home to some John Krasinski cock. Lucky girl.

by Anonymousreply 13May 28, 2021 4:08 AM

John isn’t all that.

by Anonymousreply 14May 28, 2021 6:58 AM

[quote]And I remember people praising her performance after the movie came out, with her even being in Oscar talk and some were outraged when she didn’t get nominated

She got a BAFTA and SAG nomination for it, along with Amy Adams for Arrival. The Oscars rejected them both and went with Isabelle Huppert and Ruth Negga instead.

After Prada she was great in Sunshine Cleaning - her and Adams as sisters was a good match - and she was good in The Five Year Engagement and Sicario, but there's nothing outstanding in her resume.

by Anonymousreply 15May 28, 2021 7:11 AM

Still, she gets fucked by John Krasinki on demand.

by Anonymousreply 16May 28, 2021 7:44 AM

R15 Negga was the outlier there. Huppert didn’t get nominated for SAG but that’s it. She was pretty much a shoe in, and most likely 2nd place behind Emma, even though she should have won.

Huppert was nominated (and won) the GG, BAFTA and even Critics Choice but she missed SAG because I believe some rules or some shit.

by Anonymousreply 17May 28, 2021 7:51 AM

Wasn't the book set in Britain? I heard the setting change didn't work for the story.

by Anonymousreply 18May 28, 2021 9:03 AM

The first time I watched this movie I missed the first 10 minutes or so and thought the Luke Evans character was closeted and the one killed his wife.

Later I watched the initial parts again and plot became more obvious. I read the book later and it was OK as something to kill time with on a long flight to Seoul. The middle-class setting in England seemed more authentic for the character than the more affluent NY suburbs the movie was set in.

by Anonymousreply 19May 28, 2021 9:09 AM

The story was weak regardless

by Anonymousreply 20May 28, 2021 9:09 AM

The character felt like she wouldn’t live in NY. She felt more Middle America transplant who was out of place.

Luke Evans role was small and he was terrible in his scenes

by Anonymousreply 21May 28, 2021 9:10 AM

You're all a bunch of morons. Emily Blunt is a fantastic actress, extremely talented and likable. She's had huge hits with Edge of Tomorrow, A Quiet Place and Mary Poppins which shows what kind of range she has. And she gave very strong performances in Sicario and Looper. If you're going to trash someone's performances, nitwits, it would help if you actually looked at all her performances. She's one of the best actresses of her generation.

by Anonymousreply 22May 28, 2021 9:23 AM

Edge of Tomorrow wasn’t a commercial success. It was a critical one though.

And Mary Poppins flopped.

by Anonymousreply 23May 28, 2021 9:29 AM

Can’t carry the lead, my arse. Did you hear that horse shit, Albert?

by Anonymousreply 24May 28, 2021 9:48 AM

[quote]You're all a bunch of morons. Emily Blunt is a fantastic actress, extremely talented and likable.

That's true. It's also true she hasn't achieved a string of outstanding performances, or appeared in prestige projects unlike many of her peers.

She's of a similar age to Natalie Portman, Bryce Dallas Howard, Anne Hathaway, Kirsten Dunst, Elizabeth Moss, Rebecca Hall, Lupita N'yongo, Tessa Thompson, Felicity Jones, Gugu Mbatha Raw, Scarlett Johansson, Claire Foy, Amanda Seyfried, Keira Knightley, Anna Kendrick, Carey Mulligan, Rooney Mara.

by Anonymousreply 25May 28, 2021 11:17 AM

Yep. Paid money to see this dreary film. Irritating and too long.

by Anonymousreply 26May 28, 2021 11:21 AM

Wasn’t it a originally called “Goy on the Train” and set in Israel?

by Anonymousreply 27May 28, 2021 11:29 AM

Am I right in thinking Lisa Kudrow plays a vital role in this, hitting Drunk Emily with a truth bomb that helps her solve the case?

by Anonymousreply 28May 28, 2021 11:30 AM

Yes, r28. One of the few moments of interest in this dreary film.

by Anonymousreply 29May 28, 2021 11:32 AM

I saw this movie and I remember almost nothing about it. That's not a good sign.

Surprised at all the Blunt hate. I think she's quite a good actress.

Though it is fair and accurate to say she hasn't lived up to her early promise. She's been in a lot of forgettable, middle of the road stuff. I would like to see her in more comedies.

by Anonymousreply 30May 28, 2021 11:39 AM

Is she playing Valerie Cherish at the time?

by Anonymousreply 31May 28, 2021 11:39 AM

I thought the book was good. It was interesting to read from the perspective of someone that couldn’t trust their own memories. But film can’t translate that POV very well and changing the setting from England to NY didn’t work.

by Anonymousreply 32May 28, 2021 11:42 AM

Did they not think someone would buy her actual British accent and decide to relocate the story to NYC?

by Anonymousreply 33May 28, 2021 12:01 PM

Did Tate Taylor and Luke Evans do it during the making of the film?

by Anonymousreply 34May 28, 2021 12:27 PM

R33 NY. It’s not NYC.

by Anonymousreply 35May 28, 2021 1:07 PM

[quote] changing the setting from England to NY didn’t work.

That didn’t bother me at all.

by Anonymousreply 36November 8, 2021 5:02 PM

Lisa Kudrow was the best part of the film. And she was only in it for about three minutes.

by Anonymousreply 37November 8, 2021 5:09 PM

Never saw the movie but the villain reveal at the end of the book was beyond corny.

by Anonymousreply 38November 8, 2021 5:21 PM

One of the most boring "thrillers" I've ever seen. I didn't think Blunt was bad at all. I wouldn't blame the cast at all. The script is what stunk and Tate Taylor is an uneven director at best. If you really want to see him fuck up something, watch Breaking News in Yuma County where he assembles one of the best casts of all time and manages to embarrass every single one of them. Even if it hadn't been released during COVID, it would have gone straight to streaming and died a quick death.

by Anonymousreply 39November 8, 2021 5:50 PM

Sounds painful to watch r39.

by Anonymousreply 40November 8, 2021 6:19 PM

Édgar Ramírez was hot in this. I'd be in trouble if he was my therapist. But yes, this movie was complete shit. Allison Janney shouldn't have bothered.

by Anonymousreply 41November 9, 2021 5:26 AM

Was the Haley Bennet character kissing therapist on her balcony or did drunk Emily Blunt imagine it?

by Anonymousreply 42November 9, 2021 6:04 AM

It's such a virulently anti-male film

by Anonymousreply 43November 9, 2021 6:06 AM

It was a lazy anti-man film.

by Anonymousreply 44November 9, 2021 4:38 PM

The Girl On The Train is not an anti-man film in the slightest. But it is terrible. All these mid actors ACTing their hearts out - Emily Blunt, Justin Theroux - all for some LifeTime plot. I kept expecting Vivica A. Fox to show up.

by Anonymousreply 45February 11, 2022 6:45 AM

[Quote] I kept expecting Vivica A. Fox to show up.

That would have been an improvement.

by Anonymousreply 46February 11, 2022 11:07 AM

I hated this fucking movie so much

by Anonymousreply 47September 11, 2025 6:22 PM

I read the book in a book club I used to be in. It was okay. I watched the movie at home with a couple of friends who were also in the book club, and we all agreed that the movie was shit and if we hadn’t read the book we wouldn’t have been able to follow the movie. It didn’t help that so many of the characters had similar looks. Maybe it also didn’t help that we were drinking while watching it. Anyway, I don’t remember anything now about the movie or the book, other than the lead character smuggling canned G&Ts everywhere.

by Anonymousreply 48September 11, 2025 7:18 PM

shitty movie and virulently anti-male
