He's a very disturbed guy who engages in a lot of masculinity theater to disguise how gutless and obsequious he is. He's the kid everyone hated in school with all the defense mechanisms one would expect. He told himself it was because he was smarter but he's just socially awkward, mean-spirited and inherently unlikeable. Supposedly, debating is his claim to fame, and is ingrained within him. It's a style of mock combat designed to make him feel like a winner and give him a framework for interacting with people. God knows why anybody elected him to anything.

If he was all that concerned about the American military, he would have joined a branch.

Cruz's Daddy was a Fidel Castro supporter who immigrated illegally to the US during Batista's reign. He strangely totally flipped sides and became a rightwing revivalist preacher (with no degrees in 'divinity') when he saw communism wouldn't make him rich and powerful in Texas. He's a total conman like Rafael Jr.

Cruz's Mommy is a hard-nosed bitch. Both his parents have been divorced and married several times to various people. Odd for people claiming to be Christian fundies. When you see Cruz with his parents who he dragged out on the campaign trail, it's obvious neither of them like Ted. Like everybody else.

Cruz is definitely not well-liked. In 2018 he only won re-election to his Senate seat over Beto O'Rourke by 2.6 %. That is the worst result for a Republican Senator from Texas in the past 30 years.
