Currently listening to Koyaanisqatsi for the first time
Was curious to check it out after reading people mentioning it here.
So far my thoughts are that the title track reminds me of something Nico might have done.
Track 2, "Vessels" I'm really quite liking. It sounds more like what I would expect from Philip Glass.
Anyone else like this album, hate this album, indifferent to this album? What's the film like that goes along with it?

I didn’t know it was an album. Is it the soundtrack to the movie?

The album by itself is just okay.
The film is a masterpiece. Especially if you’re stoned.

We used it at Guantanamo Bay to, y'know- encourage people to talk.

You really need to see the film in a movie theater to experience how good it is.

I've only smoked pot a couple of times in life and it's not really done anything, but if I get a chance again, this movie might be the go!
"Pruit Igoe" isn't too bad, either.

Ha, R3! That reminds me of years ago when I went to this small little independent CD store and found Diamanda Galas' "Schrei" album. When I went to buy it, the owner said to me: "You know the CIA used this album to torture its prisoners in Guantanamo?" 😂

Do you mean Nico Torterelli the transvestite?

The album and the movie are great, if you like Philip Glass, that is. I love his work, so I really enjoy it, but it's certainly not everyone's cup of tea.

I think his name is Nico Tortelloni.

Oh man, OP. Now you’ve got me listening to this as I wait in line to get into the bakery. Watching a dog bark for its owner who’s inside seems significant with this as the soundtrack.
I’d love to watch the film again. Good reminder.

Is Mr Glass still alive?
His early stuff (Einstein on Beach) is unbearable.
I heard he had 30 assistants to take dictation.

When I was a kid in the 80s, I remember this piece being played on Sesame Street and being entranced by it. How great that kids' TV got stuff like this!

There’s a mosaic portrait of him at the 86th St Q train station. It’s so odd that I knew it was him when I first saw it, even though I don’t recall knowing what he looked like.

Solo Piano is still one of my favorite albums of his, maybe because it's not too elaborately conducted.

Saw the movie (or large parts of it? can't really remember) years ago on youtube. Pretty unique. Love the title track, but the music is for sure only for those who like that kind of music.

Love Akhnaten. Love both violin concertos. Hate Einstein on the beach. Go figure…

'Einstein on the beach' was his angry young man stuff.
It's awful.
His later stuff is middle-of-the-road and non-threatening.

I bought a bunch of Philip Glass CDs when I became obsessed with a music major who loved Glass, Terry Riley, and Steve Reich. I liked, and still like Riley and Reich, but I can't listen to Glass. I think I'll give those CDs away today.
But to whom???

Glass was used for this women's tear-jerker.

The throat singing is fantastic! Takes me to another world. I saw Phillip Glass perform live as the movie Frankenstein was screened. Amaze!!

The Phillip Glass score to 'Candyman' 1992 is amazing. The CD release of that score is not.
It's a re-performance, and significant moments in the soundtrack are not on it, like Helen in the parking garage.

R6, when I first moved to NYC, a friend took me to a Diamonda Galas performance. It was only 45 minutes but she literally screamed.
I thought, WTF?!

R11. Einstein on the Beach is mesmerizing but you actually have to see it live.
Brooklyn Academy of Music presented it about a decade ago. It made no sense but it was stunning.

I saw Glass and his chamber orchestra do “La Belle and Le Bete.”
Singers stood in front of microphones as the French Cocteau version of Beauty and the Beast movie played on a giant screen behind them. The singers sang as the characters on the screen spoke—with the exact same timing. So it was as if the movie became an opera.
One of the great musical moments I’ve ever witnessed

I think Nixon in China was better than Einstein on the Beach... oh, wait.
All of the minimalist composers (Adams, Glass, Reich, Riley) are better as soundtrack to movies or background/ambient music (the great pop minimalist Eno wanted music to float in the background, not even consciously heard.... like Erik Satie named it musique d’ameublement). Seeing it performed live just doesn't seem the right context.... for me, at least.

Two of the great mysteries of the world: why does Philip Glass keep churning out the same, melodically-repetitive stuff, and why do I keep buying it?

Several years ago, Glass also rescored the movie Dracula.

Er, mate? "Pruit Igoe" is the exact name of track 4 on the album. Always better to make sure you know what you're talking about before being a smartarse, don't you think?

R34, 'Pruit Igoe' is misspelled, but not by R5. It appears that way on the album track listing, misspelled by whoever named the track.

[quote]The piece called "Pruit Igoe" was named after the notorious St. Louis housing project, demolished from 1972-1976. Reggio filmed one of the 1975 implosions. However, it was generally known as Pruitt-Igoe. As such, the title was misspelled in all releases until the expanded version was issued in 2009.

I think Glass is a genius. His original score for Paul Schrader’s “Mishima” contains, for me, some of the greatest pieces of music ever written.

Listening to "Vessels" tonight. I seem to have started developing much more patience and enjoyment of music like this in the past year or so. Was listening to "The Host of Seraphim" by Dead Can Dance before that.

No probs, R40. I've never seen the film myself, but I'll have to watch it sometime. If I ever have pot pass my way again, that could be a good time, based on recommendations from other posters here.
