Tab Hunter and Tony Perkins Part II
[quote] you expect him to be deeply concerned for her struggle but he suddenly bursts into a big hammy smile
When she leave the room he knows he's got her, he knows she 's in love with him. This is the movie I was hoping for. Sophia is such a damn good actress , and Tab is just wonderful, wonderful . WOW.

Is it wrong I find Jack Warden sexier than Tab Hunter?

OMG R1 No it's not. Where did Jack Warden hide all his sexy ? He was not so hot on the Nile. My gawd !

Weird movie really. first half plays like a realistic war drama, then after Tab and Sophia great scene it becomes completely soapy and melodramatic, like a Sirk movie, then it's a romantic comedy. It's all over the place . I was shocked by the happy ending, didn't expect it AT ALL. George Sanders was awful. Jack Warden was balls. I like the blonde broad too. Sophia and Tab were sizzling.

Ah, found you after the other thread was paywalled...
At the end, she catches up with him on the train and he stays in character, not smiling but deeply touched and emotional. No self-congratulatory smile for having won her over. That's how the scene at the rich man's house should have been played in keeping with the mood of the film and the earnest seriousness of his character.

Loren plays the role flawlessly. You would never believe she was three years younger than Tab.

I like the smile, I thought it gave a layer to the character, a confidence touch in this very sensitive performance. Tab is, after this movie, officially my favorite old hollywood actor. He's the blond angel of HW. He could really act.

Okay, I see your point. But if he really loves her, he's not going to be gleeful that she's crying. This may be our ongoing debate, cher. Pardonne-moi, je discute d'amour avec un Français... *sips cognac*
When she finds him on the steps waiting for her with tears in his eyes like a lovesick pup and she collapses into his arms. Dayum! I also like him with Jack Warden. He's protective of his buddy and wants to take him home to meet the family. *wink*
It's a tragic film because she knows that she's given up everything be with this boy for a few days and possibly the end of his short life as he ships off to war. It's complicated and bittersweet.

Well dear, my take on it is that she's acting all cool and condescending and cold after their night on the train (they DO fuck this time right ? it's not like the Natalie Wood girl he left behind hotel thing ? I am confused with the 50's inuendo) She gives him the boot and calls him a child and a little boy, and he's not SURE...so when she's furious that he breaks her shell and she cries it's like a confession, and he has proof that behind the veneer she's as smitten as he is, he KNOWS . And that makes him happy hence the big smile . I thought it was terrific acting. He def had the Billy Budd quality of beauty, character and innocence. My he's good in this movie, but Sophia....Every time I see her I am floored by her sheer talent. She's so great. So much talent in that incredible body. WoW. She's really like the last man standing isn't she ?

story bad link. When I was a kid working as 1st assistant director in a theatre, we were hosting a revival of "saturday night and sunday morning" and word got out that Sophia was in town and wanted to attend the premiere. Everybody went into a frenzy, dozens of bouquets and champagne cases were ordered, I was thinking there is NO WAY Sophia 's coming here, and she never did...Poor veteran leading lady, who had been a star back in the day, flustered in anticipation because of the stress, and went on a loop on stage couldn't get out of it, had to star back, it was a disaster.

R9 True, she really beats him up and it's not fair. She's sparring with him but fighting more with herself, which he can see clearly and that she's weakening. BUT... as his acting coach, what I would offer as a tweak is that he SOFTLY smile to himself. That million megawatt goofy-ass grin knocks me right out of the scene every time. But hey, we may have to agree to disagree over our cognac. De gustibus non est disputandum.

The ' celebrity net worth ' thing is complete BS. Good for him if he was, but they list Mia F. @ $10 mills too, and there is NO WAY she's anywhere above 500 000 in her best day, house included.

I doubt Tab was worth 10 million at his death. Doing mostly dinner theater and independent films and owning a ranch which must have cost a fortune. Of course he could have made great investments in LA real estate during his Hollywood years.

OP's link to the trailer for THAT KIND OF WOMAN preserves an unintentional glimpse of a Seaboard Railroad Jim Crow coach in service. It's the first car that Sophia and Barbara Nichols walk past - the older, painted car is at the back of the train, attached to the modern streamlined cars. Just at the 3-second mark, as the camera trucks along, you can get a quick glimpse inside the window of the partition that separated the rear section of the coach - which was the 'colored' section - from the rest of the train. Even as late as 1959, black train travelers were still being subjected to this kind of discrimination, despite paying the same fare as the white passengers.
I know this comment is off-topic but I think it is worth pointing out.
Now back to hunky Tab and hot Tony.

Whew chile, I done ridden in a lot of them Jim Crow Coaches
taking things to Miss Lora while she working on location
mostly things she like to forget - her girdle, her reading glasses, her Preparation-H
(I say, Miss Lora you know you hemorrhoids gonna flare up, just take yo medicine - she act like she don't hear nothing I say, 'specially when she got a new boyfriend)
Seem like I spend my life taking care of that white woman

I don't understand LAFAYETTE ESCADRILLE, is tab a gay male prostatute at madam's brothel ? I thought Hollywood in the 50's was very straight laced and code Hays and everything ? What's happening ?

Just rewatched Tab Hunter Confidential doc; what a sweet guy he was. Too good for that backstabbing bitch Perkins.
Haven't seen the film OP opens with, but I can't get out of my head a cheap line of Joan Rivers about Loren. A GI would stand in her doorway, throw a Hershey bar in, and she was rarin' to go. OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.
