On one hand, it shows how life is resilient. On the other hand...

Great! Now some local stooge(s) will destroy it. 🙄

There’s one in the arboretum in Golden Gate Park that blooms occasionally and smells like it sold it’s ass to the devil.

R1 ugh I hope not! But I won't hold my breath. Maybe an expert can have it moved.

Ther are really neat when they open up: "Amorphophallus titanum, the titan arum, is a flowering plant with the largest unbranched inflorescence in the world. The talipot palm, Corypha umbraculifera, has a larger inflorescence, but it is branched rather than unbranched. Amorphophallus titanum is endemic to Sumatra. "

R2 they didn't give it that name for nothing.

Is this the same one that was in Rich Crazy Asians?

by Anonymousreply 5May 20, 2021 12:11 AM

Does it take forty full years of careful cultivation in order to bloom?

by Anonymousreply 9May 20, 2021 12:30 AM

Is that the flower that smells like rotting meat?

by Anonymousreply 10May 20, 2021 12:31 AM

Miss R10, did you bother to read even a tiny bit of the linked article or the previous comments?

by Anonymousreply 11May 20, 2021 12:56 AM

Those lucky bastards!

Oh, dear.

How wonderful, I’ve been to see one at the arboretum at UC Fullerton and one at the New York Botanical Gardens and they were transcendent experiences. They are very hard to pollinate so kudos to the caretaker who watched over this plant never knowing if he would even see any response. I’ve given up on the idea of seeing the Northern Lights in my lifetime, but I’m happy I at least got to experience this twice, and maybe I’ll have one more chance before the lights go out.

There is no "UC Fullerton." Presumably you meant Cal State Fullerton.

by Anonymousreply 16May 20, 2021 3:20 PM

I would have thought that DLers would be more interested in the trees that smell like cum.

What's the scientific explanation for its odor? To attract or repel insects?

by Anonymousreply 18May 20, 2021 3:50 PM

I'm sure there's one over here at Kew Gardens.

by Anonymousreply 19May 20, 2021 3:52 PM

Why is that woman dressed like Thelma Harper? Performance art? Bag lady?

Reminds me of a Midsomer Murder episode. The killings at Badger's Drift.

We come bearing gifts.

by Anonymousreply 23May 20, 2021 4:11 PM

This is a nice follow up that explains all.

R20 I was about to ask the same thing. I'm more interested in her sartorial choices than the stinky flower.

by Anonymousreply 25June 2, 2021 3:37 AM

The lady in OP chose that outfit specifically for the occasion. There are a lot of women like her in inland towns the world over.
