Meijer - Your thoughts on this chain of stores?
One of my Uber drivers was originally from Michigan, and she was thrilled that they were about to open a location here in Ohio. She said it was big like Wal-Mart, but cleaner and less trashy.
I just went there for the first time today and counted at least 22 people walking around the store with no masks on at all. There are no signs on the doors asking you to wear one, and the greeters aren't enforcing wearing masks at all. Nothing. They don't even offer hand sanitizer stations or wipes for the carts.
Not impressed at all.

I like it. It’s not walmarty. I like it. Clean, spacious, away from people.

Oh—is this another flyover bashing? Got it.

Much better than Wal-Mart. There are variations from store to store but mine has a great produce section. It certainly isn't Whole Foods, though, if that's your thing.

Back in the Late 90s, a Super Meijer's in Indiana was the first "Super" store I had ever been to. I remember being totally fascinated by the concept of clothes/misc items being sold in the same place where I could buy groceries. This was a few years before Walmarts across America started expanding their store layouts and switching to the "Super" format. I went from fascination to complete disgust within 3 years or so.

I live in a town with a Walmart and a Safeway, and I would absolutely love a Meijer or even a damn Aldi's.

Just remember folks a member of the Meijer family was one of the few Republicans who voted to impeach orange anus.

My local Meijer has signs asking you to wear masks, wipes available, hand sanitizer stations and a person wiping down carts, you got a bad Meijer there OP.
I don't know of any store enforcing people to wear masks, they want you to, they ask you to but they aren't going to challenge you.

When my local Meijer first opened it had a Chinese restaurant in the store, it had very good Chinese food reasonably priced , I hated when they ended those. It is my main place to shop for groceries, it generally has lower prices and better selection than Walmart. Walmart never really has sales but Meijer has many items that go on sale every week and a weekly flier with their specials.

They need to bring a Meijer to my neck of the woods, I want to see Hy-Vee get fisted!

The deals are so good. They constantly have deals on my favorite brand of pretzels. I miss living near one. Now I go to a Marianos. It’s expensive but good quality. Meijers is like if Walmart and Target had a baby. Has some Target qualities with Walmart prices.

I live in Ohio and we have Meijer everywhere here. When they opened in the early 90s everyone in town got a 10 minute VHS tape giving tours of the store. It sat in our entertainment center for years. They used to all have actual McDonalds next to the bakery. Our best hospital used to have a McDonalds in it too.
Growing up all my shoes came from Meijer, because they used to carry Adidas. If they still carried them most of my shoes would still come from Meijer.

Only a few people who read this will fully grasp this comment but here goes. I have no idea about Meijers (there haven't been any in most of the cities/states I've lived in over the years) but I think the only reason a lot of these shitty chain stores like Wal-Mart, Krogers, Safeway, Target, Hy-Vee, etc have survived is because they all participate in the government's gangstalking/community policing program. Meaning, they have teams of fake "shoppers" in their stores at all times whose sole purpose is to harass certain targeted individuals as they attempt to shop.
Admittedly, this sounds outlandish but it's very true. Little by little (as more people are noticing this) the mask is coming off and this horrible program is being exposed.

They are evil. For years, they attempted to bulldoze (literally) their way into our small town (Acme, MI, just north of Traverse City). They strong-armed local officials in a very Trumpian way, threatening lawsuits on all opposed to them. Meijer was forced to pay big-time damages for harassment. One guy, whom they really bullied subsequently died of a heart attack, which was attributed to the tremendous stress he was under from Meijer's attack lawyers. Our community did not want them, yet Meijer, of course, prevailed and wrought environmental damage, nearly destroying a beautiful trout stream, Acme Creek, where my dad fished in his youth and where he took me many times when I was little. I hate Meijer and I will never shop there.

R4, back in the 1970s you could go to Two Guys and buy groceries, clothes, records, pets, etc.
This was not a new concept in the 90s.

OP here again. One other strange thing that I noticed: Despite the store being massively huge, many sections of the store had very limited selections. Their electronics section paled in comparison to places like Wal-Mart or Target. Their men's clothing section was also miniscule. I was hoping to maybe get some new athletic shorts and tees to wear around the house, and couldn't find any athletic shorts at all (we're heading into summer, hello?) and their selection of t-shirts was very limited.

Meijer was great when I lived in Cincy: clean, stocked, good employees. I wish we had them in the Philly area now.

My husband, who's a Michigander, likes to insist that they are amazing and "much better" than Target, much less Wal-Mart. But we visited one in his hometown a couple years ago and ... I don't get it. Definitely not nicer than a Target.

R1, that's because they've discontinued requiring masks.

Back when it was called Meijer Thrifty Acres we used to call it Meijer Shifty Fakers. We were always a Kmart family.

The chain doesn't exist where I live. I'd never heard of it until recently, when I watched the series of video clips on the 'Crazy Religious Woman' in Michigan who often chooses Meijer stores as the scene of her escapades.

There’s no “s” at the end of Meijer or Kroger.

Meijer sounds like a cult-store; among the lines of the satanic Wegmans. You all need to be deprogrammed so you can fully embrace the glory that is Target.

Since moving back to Ohio, my husband insists that we do our shopping at Meijer. He’s in love and I feel threatened. The nearest Meijer is in the next town over, approximately a 20-minute drive. We have a Kroger in our town, less than five minutes away from home.
I finally convinced him that Kroger’s produce is better, but he loves Meijer for everything else. He will drive to Meijer to get a bottle of ketchup and some bandaids.
We need to state an intervention with these Ohio and Michigan natives. Make them see the light!

I recently moved to Michigan and we have multiple Kroger and Meijer stores in our area. Today I stopped into Target for the first time here and I was amazed that it had a fairly complete grocery section.

Ohio is rolling back mask mandates city by city, so I'm not surprised you saw maskless shoppers. My city (Dayton) just tonight removed its mask mandate for all. The statewide mandate expires June 2.
