I just spent 4 1/2 hours walking around Astoria. From Ditmars all the way down to 36 Ave. Snaking back-and-forth all the way through the neighborhoods… Down to Astoria Park. It’s literally an explosion of cultures, food, languages etc. Tons of people outside walking around enjoying the weather and eating at some of the fabulous restaurants. I really don’t know why people dislike this neighborhood. It’s super low-key. There has to be some kind of gay scene over here outside of scruff and grindr. Its super livable.
Astoria NY

Its all Greek to me!

There is! One of its nicknames is "Actoria" since so many Broadway gays live there.

Um . I almost broke my neck looking at all the hot guys walking down 30th Ave.

Some moron sining "Marching To Astoria"
by Anonymous | reply 4 | May 19, 2021 8:20 PM |
I know several friends who have lived there, and without exception they loved it there. They moved because of life, love, careers etc.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | May 19, 2021 8:31 PM |
...Do people dislike it? It's a popular choice for people who can't afford Manhattan. Even "Broad City" had one of their main characters live in Astoria.

R6 Yes there are people on DL that wouldn’t step foot on the N train. Some of the apartments near Astoria Park are beautiful
by Anonymous | reply 7 | May 19, 2021 8:56 PM |
When I get priced out of Manhattan, I'll probably end up there.
And gain a massive amount of weight from eating at all the amazing Greek and Italian restaurants nearby.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | May 19, 2021 8:59 PM |
R8 I think I gained 10 pounds walking by all the restaurants today.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | May 19, 2021 9:00 PM |
There are many many selling points to Astoria; architecture is not one of them. Compared to Brooklyn apartment buildings range from okay to ugly.
But it's still affordable, amazing restaurants and scorching hot mens. Lots of younger gay couples moving here the past 5 years.
And there's a ukulele store!
by Anonymous | reply 10 | May 19, 2021 9:02 PM |
4 hours and a half, but did you score some local dongs, OP? If not, it's a useless and pointless long march of lonesome banality. And you are even fatter.

Heh. My husband was all hot for Astoria for a brand new apartment building rental. A small one bedroom. Because it was new he was showing me all the nice cabinets in the kitchen that was open to the living room - no dining area. Just 2 stools up against the half kitchen wall. Small bedroom. I asked “How close to the subway?”
12 blocks.
TWELVE BLOCKS?
In winter after a snowstorm when there are snowbanks on every corner? In pouring rain? During the 7 or10 nor’easters from September to May? In the 90 degree heat & humidity of summer? Wearing work clothes? Getting to your job soaking wet from rain, sweat, sleet, snow? Yeah, right.

[quote]OP: There has to be some kind of gay scene over here outside of scruff and grindr.
And that is when we understood why the OP was running the streets of Astoria waving her feather boa at anyone who looked like an ethnic cafe dishwasher standing under an awning for a smoke.

R14 Sadly scruff and grindr are the community in many places without gay bars
by Anonymous | reply 15 | May 19, 2021 9:49 PM |
Fun movie fact:
The Goonies (1985) was filmed here.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 19, 2021 9:53 PM |
No, R16, just no. Oddly enough, Astoria, Ore has been confused for the New York version more than you would think. Local APD has to even note on their website that they are not NY.

It’s not Manhattan.

What R12 said-- Brooklyn and even parts of Jersey City have beautiful brownstones and big trees and all that. Those areas were built for affluent families.
Astoria has those Queens three-family homes and random architecture most of which was built post-war for immigrants.
So limited curb appeal and lacks the sort of housing stock that appeals to college educated white couples with kids who want to spend $2MM on a place.
Astoria is very safe and always has been, while part of the appeal of Brooklyn is living in or near areas with a lot of crime (less of an issue in the 10s and 20s, but that's what gave it its reputation)
Finally, it's closer to midtown rather than downtown, so never had a whole lot of appeal for hipsters.
The other downside is that it's fairly sprawling and lots of apartments are over a mile from the nearest subway. There are buses that will take you to the subway, but that's yet another hassle.

This is in another part of Queens, not Astoria, but you see these sorts of three-family houses throughout the borough-- terraces on the top two floors and the ground floor gets the back yard.
Immigrant families really like them because it's an investment--they get their tenants to pay rent which helps offset the total cost.

I’m sorry but you are mistaken. The entire town of Astoria, Oregon was actually constructed in Astoria, NY. The scenes in the abandoned restaurant were actually an old gay bar on Staten Island. Sloth was chained to an old gloryhole.

I cant imagine having a big dog in Manhattan.. Astoria is way better for pets

Astoria is great and very vibrant. If you are looking for another day outing, try Jackson Heights next.

I was wondering what all the fuss was about Northern Blvd.

by Anonymous | reply 26 | May 19, 2021 11:17 PM |
Some snooty gays I know bought a big house in Astoria because the ones in the Manhattan were just SO much and they couldn't stop complaining about Astoria - the amenities weren't up to snuff, the people there are kinda trashy and there was just so much goddam brass and chrome decorating everyone's houses! But I liked it fine.

A portion of this year’s Tribeca Film Festival will be held in Astoria Park.

I live here in Astoria and it’s great! But saddest happened at the start of the month, my local Pizza place Retro Pizza burned down from an early morning electrical fire. They are lovely people and are hoping to rebuild and are nearly half way with a GoFundMe. Here’s news about them.

R17, I lived in Astoria Oregon for a year when I was in my late 20’s. Such a beautiful area, but so rainy and depressing.

I once walked through the lobby of the Waldorf-Astoria. I asked them why there was a Waldorf salad but not an Astoria one. Not even Astoria dressing.

Similar to large parts of Far East. Village, Williamsburg, Bushwuck and Ridgewood, it lacks prettiness. But like those ugly neighborhoods, it has a thriving lifestyle. Personally I’d rather do Upper East Side, but Astoria is still convenient.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | May 21, 2021 1:14 AM |
It's a big place and the maintenance is pretty low R35, but you'd probably want to redo the bathroom and from the few glimpses offered, you'd definitely want to redo the kitchen-- when there are 19 photos and none of them are of the kitchen, it's a sure sign it's a wreck.

Albatross and Icon Bar both survived the pandemic! You should check one of them out next time OP. And the Out Astoria group on FB has been around forever.

Teen pregnancy is not the norm r33, what decade do you live in? The rate of teen is really low these days. People are having kids pretty late these days.

When my gay best friend lived there for a while. it was known as Hysteria, Queens.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | May 21, 2021 3:55 AM |
At one time there was a gay orgy/party place where you checked your clothes at the door. It was in an industrial area where Astoria and Long Island City meet in a spooky, seemingly abandoned old factory. I suspect it is closed now. I went there once on a visit to NY about 10 years ago. I think it was called Rainbow. I just looked it up online and it appears that CumUnion is using that space now for private parties.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | May 21, 2021 9:05 AM |
Oh look, it appears that it's still in business. Some of you Astoria/Long Island City DLers need to check it out and report back.
