Is there anything better than fresh, cold watermelon in the summer?
Yes. Virtually any other fruit. Watermelon is tasteless and the most disgusting candy flavor.

Yes.
Fresh, cold RIPE honeydew melon.

Watermelon is a delight on a hot day.

Did we really need a verbose instructional blog post for something as basic as this? What's next, how to pour a glass of milk? How to spread jam on toast?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | May 19, 2021 4:11 PM |
I love watermelon - it is the quintessential summer fruit.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | May 19, 2021 4:13 PM |
I went to the Austin farmer's market one time and bought a glass of fresh watermelon juice. It was unsweetened and as revolting as one might imagine.
I also bought a bunch of peaches thinking I would turn them into schnapps, but they got moldy in two days and I ended up throwing them all out.

Delicious, fragrant durian fruit!
Like a noseful of ME!

I don't care for any type of fresh melon to be honest, but I do love me some watermelon Jolly Ranchers!

Well, there's penis.

Watermelon used to be delicious. Then the bred the seeds out, and the flavor left with them.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | May 19, 2021 4:40 PM |
I get a small seedless watermelon and a big honeydew melon and cut them both up into rindless chunks and keep in a bowl in my fridge in the summer. it's my favorite sweet non-icecream snack.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | May 19, 2021 5:03 PM |
Careful. Too much of it and you'll waste away and die. It's that notoriously dangerous watermelon diet, not any kind of virus.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 19, 2021 5:13 PM |
I like to cut up a watermelon and add lime juice, lime zest, and honey.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | May 19, 2021 5:16 PM |
add a little chopped basil or mint r17
by Anonymous | reply 18 | May 19, 2021 5:18 PM |
My mum was a Brit. She taught me to cut my watermelon out of the rind. Cube it up and eat it with a knife and fork. Of course the first time I did this at summer camp I was beaten savagely.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | May 19, 2021 5:40 PM |
Love it - great for weight loss!!
by Anonymous | reply 20 | May 19, 2021 5:41 PM |
Yes. Fresh, cold watermelon from Spain.
It will make you wonder what you were putting in your mouth all those years until you knew better.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | May 19, 2021 5:45 PM |
The kind we had last summer from the Carpathian region has a dark green rind, is round like a ball and super sweet. I don't like sugar so it wasn't for me. Some people here put it on salad with cubes of goat cheese that is far less gamey than the one back home and serve it with pecans on a bed of baby spinach or butter lettuce and a dry, sparkling wine. Not my thing but definitely good for those who like it.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | May 19, 2021 6:35 PM |
I can eat, and eat, and eat the stuff (with a sprinkle of salt, of course)! In the summer, I make whole meals out of fresh cold watermelon, sliced Beefsteak tomatoes (also with salt and cracked black pepper), and hot, buttery corn-on-the-cob (salted and peppered).

I love watermelon sherbet.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | May 19, 2021 7:18 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 28 | May 19, 2021 7:32 PM |
I love watermelon. It will stain clothing though. Watch the drips.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | May 19, 2021 7:33 PM |
I am one of those that doesn't care for Watermelon but you all enjoy. I like all other melons but Watermelon is rather bland to me and I burp it like mad and it doesn't taste any better the second time.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | May 19, 2021 7:41 PM |
dammit, I am going to have to lug home a watermelon when I go to the office Friday morning

R4 - yes, lychee juice is the nectar of the gods. I don't care for any type of melon, TBH.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | May 19, 2021 8:29 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 34 | May 19, 2021 9:48 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 35 | May 19, 2021 9:53 PM |
R35 - what is revolving? It's pretty much all water except for a dash of sugar.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | May 19, 2021 9:58 PM |
I love it with cucumbers in a "fire and ice" salsa.

by Anonymous | reply 40 | May 19, 2021 10:17 PM |
Watermelon turned me into a Lesbian. Just one day, suddenly.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | May 19, 2021 10:43 PM |
I drank watermelon juice once. I think I got high from the sugar. It was dreamy.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | May 19, 2021 11:16 PM |
Is the yellow watermelon any different? I occasionally see it at the stores..
by Anonymous | reply 43 | May 19, 2021 11:17 PM |
I don't like the yellow. or, maybe the one that I got just didn't taste great. I was more mellony without the sweetness.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | May 19, 2021 11:24 PM |
OP, are you going to start a fried chicken thread next?
by Anonymous | reply 45 | May 19, 2021 11:29 PM |
R44 I agree about the yellow watermelon. It has little to no flavor at all, in my experience. R43 You're not missing anything. Odd in a way, when I think about it. Yellow (Golden) cherry tomatoes are less acidic than the red versions, but their flavor is BEYOND. They're amazing.
But yes. Yellow watermelon is a waste, in my experience.

I prefer chunks of refrigerated fresh pineapple cut precisely into equally sided squares using the latest GPS-satellite numerical (and rich-in-vitamin) coordinates.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | May 20, 2021 1:51 AM |
R44, R46, thanks -- good to know! I guess people just buy it for the novelty of a yellow watermelon, rather than flavor.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | May 20, 2021 2:05 AM |
I heard there's too much sugar in it? And also not good for those with IBS.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | May 20, 2021 2:17 AM |

Finally, other people who can't stand the taste of watermelon. I thought I was the only one. To me, the flavor is worse than beets. FWIW, I find any kind of melon repulsive.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | May 20, 2021 2:21 AM |
R50 same here. My mother used to cut up cantaloupe weekly when it was in season and leave it in the refrigerator where it would make anything else in there that wasn't tightly sealed smell and taste like melon. She loved it, but it turned my stomach. Just gross.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | May 20, 2021 3:07 AM |
I had some friends over for lunch a few years ago and melon was the dessert and I asked them if they would like salt on theirs, and they gave me the funniest look. But that's how my family always at it, and I still do.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | May 20, 2021 4:14 AM |
Watermelon is the best.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | May 20, 2021 6:10 AM |
Cantaloupe, other melons these things have in common with the watermelon only five letters and a shape.
Cantaloupe has an overripe moldy taste, like death, that lingers too long.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | May 20, 2021 6:29 AM |
There's a local supermarket that sells what they call a Mexican Melon which I believe is a cantaloupe/honeydew hybrid and it is fantastic. It looks like a honeydew on the outside, has orange flesh, is utterly delicious and is fodmap-friendly to IBS sufferers.
