Why doesn't Liza write her moeirs?

I was thinking while watching "Halston": it would think it would be a great way for her to get a big cash infusion.

Think how much gossip she would have: about drugs, going to Betty Ford, her mother, her father, her husbands, old Hollywood, Broadway in the 60s, Hollywood in the 70s, Studio 54, Charles Aznavour, Desi Arnaz Jr., Peter Sellers, Martin Scorsese, Albert Finney, Bob Fosse, Burt Reynolds, Gene Hakcman, Dudley Moore, Halston, Andy Warhol, Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, Michael Jackson, the Pet Shop Boys,

...probably almost every gay man in the USA over the age of 45 would buy it, and so would many women. And except for Scorsese and her siblings, everyone who would feature in it is dead so she could be pretty open.

by Anonymousreply 73May 29, 2021 6:58 AM

I'm not sure how it's done with "moeirs" but I do know that it's common for a celebrity's memoirs to be "written with" or "as told to" a co-author, who is often the one who does all the work after the celebrity has babbled endlessly into a tape recorder. As long as I get paid up front, I volunteer!

by Anonymousreply 1May 19, 2021 4:16 AM

I read the Andy Warhol Diaries over and over. If it’s dishy in that “Liza” way, she’d make a mint.

by Anonymousreply 2May 19, 2021 4:17 AM

With her years of substance abuse and health problems can she remember enough dish to fill a book? If she can it would be great, but if she can’t it would be sad.

by Anonymousreply 3May 19, 2021 4:19 AM

*"memoirs," not moeirs. Sorry.

by Anonymousreply 4May 19, 2021 4:22 AM

she told Robert Osborne she won't.

by Anonymousreply 5May 19, 2021 4:27 AM

" She has to mention ME! "

Did she say why, R5? But, even so, a girl can change her mind.

How can she possibly dish all that dirt?

by Anonymousreply 9May 19, 2021 4:34 AM

I like blue.

by Anonymousreply 10May 19, 2021 4:36 AM

What could she possibly write about me that is already known? For example...

by Anonymousreply 11May 19, 2021 4:37 AM

Not capable of dishing or being honest enough for a good bio. She's very old fashioned in that regard.

Too bad Wendy Leigh is not around to ghost write this like she did Zsa Zsa Gabor's "One Lifetime is Not Enough". Wendy died from a fall (intentional or not) "from the balcony of her London apartment beside the Thames".

She doesnt need the money and most likely has been told that in order to get really big bucks, she'd have to shit on people or trash her rolodex, talk shit about everyone she ever dated, give out private info about them....And I'd bet she's disgusted with all the actors she's known over the years who have done that and talked shit about herself, her parents, and her friends.

In the doc on Halston, she asks the filmmaker twice to try to focus on his accomplishments and not just the salacious stuff. because with all of these (books, documentaries, interviews) we want the salacious stuff.

by Anonymousreply 25May 19, 2021 7:01 AM

I've wondered if Liza might be 'on the spectrum'. Her interviews are always, odd- like she doesn't know where the interviewer is coming from. Then there were the gay marriages and poor career choices. She seems kinda clueless.

by Anonymousreply 26May 19, 2021 7:21 AM

She has said numerous times that she doesn't respect people who write tell all's. However I don't know why she wouldn't write about other aspects of her life, say her work with Kander and Ebb. Fred Ebb is responsible for her persona, just as much as Halston is. Regardless must of her life has been documented and she's talked about it in interviews.

by Anonymousreply 27May 19, 2021 7:32 AM

A perfect project for Ryan Murphy. The gay husbands have to be central for me to watch.

by Anonymousreply 28May 19, 2021 7:47 AM

It's "Memoirz" with a "Z," not "moeirs" with an "S!"

by Anonymousreply 29May 19, 2021 7:49 AM

I hope that moeirs joins cak, graxy and jandra in the DL lexicon.

by Anonymousreply 30May 19, 2021 7:57 AM

I think Liza could write a great memoir that would be like Mel Tormé, who also refused to write a tell-all. He just wrote about what it was like working with extremely talented people in the business in "It Wasn't All Velvet," and came out with a first-class book that sold well despite the lack of gossip.

by Anonymousreply 31May 19, 2021 6:53 PM

"It Wasn't All Velvet" is a great title. Linda Ronstadt's "Simple Dreams" also focused on her career, without much gossip.

by Anonymousreply 32May 19, 2021 7:42 PM

Did you mean her Mohairs?

by Anonymousreply 33May 19, 2021 7:44 PM

Hi Lizshhhhha!

by Anonymousreply 34May 19, 2021 8:11 PM

She should write a blue memoir.

by Anonymousreply 35May 19, 2021 8:20 PM

In all sherioushnesh (okay, that was my one joke), I think Liza has been so scarred by everything that was written about her mum, Halston, and others that she'd never write her own moeirs (last joke there). Wasn't there even friction for several years between Lorna and Liza when Lorna wrote her book? I could be misremembering.

by Anonymousreply 36May 19, 2021 10:31 PM

R36 I understand that and her reasoning. I'm just a different type of person who would want to write my own book to set the record straight.

by Anonymousreply 37May 19, 2021 11:57 PM

R37, likewise. I'm just not sure she has the emotional capacity to revisit everything that's happened in her life. I type that as someone who's been in therapy for years, and it can be very difficult for people to revisit things that brought trauma into their lives. Not to mention on the public spectrum...bless our Liza with a Z.

by Anonymousreply 38May 20, 2021 12:05 AM

yes r28 They were estranged for a while. Lorna's book was pretty hard on Liza.

They may still be estranged slightly. They showed up at the Oscars together but I saw Liza at the Hollywood Bowl not that long ago. She said all her family are with the angels. The audience was the only family she had left. (So Lorna and Joe don't count I guess.)

by Anonymousreply 39May 20, 2021 12:41 AM
Lorna's book was pretty hard on Liza.

And someone was hard on Lorna, if you get my drift.

by Anonymousreply 40May 20, 2021 12:45 AM

I didn't think Lorna's book was that hard on Liza. I think Liza is simply just a private person. She's experienced things most of us would love to read about, but obviously does not get any personal benefit or catharsis in sharing. I also get the impression she likes to maintain an image with the public, especially in regards to what her parents were like. You can see compilations of her interviews on Youtube and as she gets older the less she shares and more she leans into an image.

What I think someone should do is a professional retrospective on her life. That'll get her to talk. She does love to give credit to those who helped her along the way.

by Anonymousreply 41May 20, 2021 12:54 AM

As crazy as she can be, I have never read anything or heard any anecdotes of Liza being an unkind person. A juicy, score-settling memoir just is not her style.

by Anonymousreply 42May 20, 2021 1:58 AM

Liza has had a couple of strokes, hasn't she? Who knows how good her memory is.

But the main factor is that she's been famous since she was born. She's always been a public figure and never had any real privacy. You can't blame her for wanting to hide her private thoughts and feelings--they are the only things she has that haven't been picked over by the world.

by Anonymousreply 43May 20, 2021 2:04 AM

Wouldn't mind seeing her do her own show like Charles Nelson Reilly in "The Life of Reilly".

As Christopher Plummer said in his acceptance speech for the Canadian Screen Awards. "The curtain has not yet fallen. It is simply stuck."

by Anonymousreply 44May 20, 2021 2:10 AM
You can't blame her for wanting to hide her private thoughts and feelings--they are the only things she has that haven't been picked over by the world.

Oh yes: she is such a victim.

She has been treated so terribly by the public, and has been given absolutely nothing in her entire life!!

by Anonymousreply 45May 20, 2021 2:13 AM

I didn't say she was a victim who has been given nothing. I said she's someone who has enjoyed very little privacy in her life and probably wants to preserve what she does have.

by Anonymousreply 46May 20, 2021 2:16 AM

Lorna's book was mean regarding Liza's time on Broadway in The Rink and Victor/Victoria.

It must eat Lorna up that she never had a Broadway career like her sister. The book also makes it sound like she was robbed of the role of Grizabella in Cats. She says the had her work with a vocal coach for months then she read in the papers they hired Betty Buckley.

As to why she never replaced Buckley or did the show on tour she says the role was too small for her.

She was a terrible actress. Awful in Grease 2 and abysmal in Extremeties off Broadway with Farrah Fawcett (who managed to be great.)

by Anonymousreply 47May 20, 2021 4:00 AM
I said she's someone who has enjoyed very little privacy in her life

Yes, thanks to the fact that she has aggressively sought the public spotlight since her teen years.

She has had [bold]exactly[/bold] what she has asked for.

by Anonymousreply 48May 20, 2021 4:03 AM

R46 I agree. I think one could even say Liza is averse to the general public seeing her as a victim, like Judy turned into. Liza has to have been thru some horrible shit. Judy and Vincente surely loved her, but I cannot imagine having either as a parent, let alone together, was ideal for any child. At least two of her husbands treated her like garbage. The list goes on, but I know most of you know her life already.

Liza has spoken against the public's accepted image of Judy as a tragedy, instead of someone who was funny, eternally optimistic, and impressively resilient. She doesn't want to succumb to the same stereotypes. The public just doesn't have the attention span or understanding for nuance, which I'm sure Liza's story would require.

Lorna is very different. Polar opposite sisters. She seems to have gotten a lot of validation and relief from sharing her life. Not a criticism, just a different way of processing being the child of a legend. I actually love her book. I judge a memoir on how accurately it represents the author and Lorna's perspective and personality shine thru strongly. I can see how it would have upset Liza tho. Lorna did invite the public into family business.

by Anonymousreply 49May 20, 2021 4:03 AM

Liza has also been critical of Lorna doing shows singing their mother's songs.

by Anonymousreply 50May 20, 2021 4:09 AM

R50 Liza has done her mother's songs, so she has no room to criticize. Joe did a little "Wishful Drinking"-esque show as well.

Judy was literally robbed of the $ she worked tirelessly to make. She would have no issues with her own children continuing her legacy to ensure financial security for themselves and others in the extended family.

by Anonymousreply 51May 20, 2021 4:20 AM

Judy was one of the most talented singers ever. She also had a lot of pain and struggle throughout her life. Despite that, she had a good heart, which is hard to encounter in Hollywood. At a time when gay people were oppressed beyond belief, they identified with her struggles and she theirs.

by Anonymousreply 52May 20, 2021 4:23 AM

odd r51. Then I wonder why she criticized Lorna. I think Lorna may have done a whole show devoted to their mother that may be it.

by Anonymousreply 53May 20, 2021 4:30 AM

I'm surprised that someone hasn't written a tell-all book about Liza already. If she won't do it then it's ripe for the picking.

by Anonymousreply 54May 20, 2021 4:44 AM

r53 Liza did a whole show dedicated to her father: Minnelli on Minnelli. She sang Meet Me in St. Louis songs too. Regardless, Judy is looking down on her children rooting them on making back the $ she was due. A common theme in a majority of her later years interviews is her (rightful) bitterness and anger over being financially fleeced her whole career. Before she died she and Mickey Deans were in the process of licensing out her name to movie theaters and supposedly other ventures. Judy wanted her children to be their own selves, but she was not so sentimental or precious about her signature songs that she'd be against her kids making $ off of them.

Liza and Lorna are just very different people who happen to have a mother and many life experiences in common. Liza may have felt the timing of Lorna's concerts lining up with the memoir was "selling out" rather than "honoring."

I've always said I got my drive from my mother, but I got my dreams from my father.

by Anonymousreply 57May 20, 2021 5:10 AM

I think it is just difficult for the offspring of legends to find their own path while also honoring the memory of their loved one. Liza has tried to toe the line, occasionally throwing in a song or two to honor her mother but not doing a whole show. Lorna, who doesn't really have hits of her own, basically just does Judy's hits. It is like the difference between Nancy Sinatra and Frank Jr.

One of the best, I've seen is Hank Williams III, who eerily favors his grandfather, he used to play two concerts a night on tour. The first concert would be straight up covering his grandfather's classics, then there would be an intermission for the old people to leave, and he would do a whole second concert of his own psychobilly music.

by Anonymousreply 59May 20, 2021 5:26 AM

R59 I dislike that bitch. I remember a very liberal professor I had saying, about her Nancy Reagan book, "If you hate someone. Read her book about them and all of a sudden you have sympathy for the person you disliked. Because her books are such trash."

by Anonymousreply 60May 20, 2021 5:39 AM

Judy told Liza never to sing her songs. Liza has said this many times. I think it was when they were doing the London concert. Luckily with Kander and Ebb, she didn't have to.

Agreed. And the late Roddy McDowall. Can you imagine if a book of his memoirs was discovered? He knew everyone and had the dirt on all of them.

by Anonymousreply 69May 21, 2021 12:49 AM

R69, you must be new here. Roddy wrote his memoirs and specified they not be published until the end of time. (Actually 100 years after his death, or something equally silly.) It's been discussed here many times before.

by Anonymousreply 70May 21, 2021 2:26 PM

R68 Liza sang Judy's songs even when she was alive. Judy wanted Liza to be her own person. Which she did in aces. There was no reason she couldn't sing her songs. Which she did. See Minnelli on Minnelli and again an easy Google search to see all the times Liza has sang a "Judy" song, even before that quote you cherry picked.
