This reads to me like she's the very definition of certifiably insane. The comments are thoughtful and sympathetic, I have a completely different read. What do you DL'ers think?
Sorry if the article is paywalled for some. I'm unable to cut and paste with the gadget I'm currently using, if someone else could, it'd be appreciated. Thanks.

Is she Muslim? Is she Jewish? Is she wearing both a hijab and a Star of David?

Who'd have thought Sinead would outlive Dolores O'Riordan.

Great article. I’ve always liked Sinead.

I adore her

Great article, especially the bit about Prince being a psycho. They left out the part about her living in a motel penniless and off her meds though.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | May 18, 2021 6:08 PM |
Love her, I hate that kind of bullshit hypocrisy. When Michael Moore got bood at the Oscar's for speaking out against the Iraq war, I remember thinking it was just like Sinead on SNL. They were both right.

This bitch is mental.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | May 18, 2021 6:19 PM |
Thanks OP. That was an excellent article.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | May 18, 2021 6:25 PM |
She was right though, about the sexual abuse of children in the Catholic Church, which was the whole point of her protest.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | May 18, 2021 6:32 PM |
I can’t read the article. I canceled my times sub when they started letting deplorable scumbag propagandist write “op-Ed” hit piece articles that were put forward by the publication as a good-faith argument from an opposing view.
The grey lady held on as tight as she could but even she couldn’t ward off the fascist wave that has permeated every crevice of the media landscape and beyond.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | May 18, 2021 6:40 PM |
Was Sinead right about the Catholic church? Yes.
Is she extremely mentally ill? Yes.
Both things can be -indeed, are - true.

At the time she tore the Pope’s pic I was still pretty young and never understood the fuss. It was only a photograph.

I still don’t get the fuss.

The 80s were so conservative and conformist, the public reaction was no surprise. But in hindsight it's hilarious anyone gave a fuck about what Joe Piscopo or Frank Sinatra thought of her stunt. I for one watched it and thought it was genius - of course being an atheist meant it had very little meaning for me at all, anyway.

Her follow up to the big second album was a big band covers album. It sucked. She faded. End of.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | May 18, 2021 7:57 PM |
Is she Muslim now? What's with the Star of David ring? Also, does she really thinks Islam is better than Catholicism when it comes to abuse of children?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | May 18, 2021 7:57 PM |
I think she comes off as pretty sane in this piece...especially when you remember the couple of times she was in the public eye (the feud with Miley Cyrus, and the motel room mental breakdown).
Obviously she's battled mental illness for a long time. She seems to be doing much better. She's clearly not cut out for fame and all that goes with it.
I liked some of her first album, and some of the stuff she did after her star faded. Never was a huge fan of "Nothing Compares 2 U"...I don't hate it, don't love it, it's just whatever. I appreciate her uniqueness as an artist.

[Quote]On a recent overcast afternoon, she had a navy hijab arranged over her shaved head and a cigarette permanently installed between her fingertips
Sounds like the hilarious gay on Chaturbate who dresses like a Muslim frau and smokes and drinks vodka while taking viewer abuse.

Sinead has released some of the most amazing music over the years, r20. She was never interested in being a big pop star chasing hits, she makes real, glorious music.

[quote]The backlash against her was just so...American. Don't attack guns and God I suppose.
Very true. The idea that in a 90-minute stint on SNL she "derailed her life" and "killed her career" seems more than a little exaggerated. She didn't make her career easier, certainly, but if it died it's because she let it die and that's a different matter; and if her life took some difficult turns into years of wrestling with mental illness, that's not down to having put a bug up Lorne Michaels' ass (who seems to have come out all right in the end.)
I don't think I'm glossing over some serious mental health problems to disagree somewhat with OP, but I don't think O'Connor was someone who wanted to be the top anything, to chase after maximum attention, fame, financial success. Some people bristle deeply and genuinely at what others spend a lifetime chasing after and what many more admire from a distance. I just don't think she was going to be long down that path before stepping off. I don't know that she's sad or noble or brave or a failed success, I just sense that that she's one of those people too sensitive to things to want to make it big as an entertainer, or to measure her success along any usual path.
She's not had an altogether easy go at things, but that's not because of one night on SNL.
