Teen arrested in connection with killing of child found in middle of Texas street

An 18-year-old man was arrested Sunday in connection with the death of a child who was found in the middle of a Texas street, police said.

Darriynn Brown is charged with kidnapping and theft, according to the Dallas Police Department, which said more charges are expected following forensic analysis. A police spokesman told NBC News that the teen, who was familiar with members of the household, took the boy from his residence.

The 4-year-old boy, who has not been identified, was found dead in the middle of the 7500 block of Saddleridge Drive before 7 a.m. CT Saturday, according to police.

Executive Assistant Chief Albert Martinez told NBC Dallas-Fort Worth that investigators believed an "edged weapon" was used in the attack on the child.

When asked to elaborate on the weapon used, police could only confirm "homicidal violence as the cause of death at this time."

The FBI crime scene unit is assisting in the investigation.

Brown was booked into the Dallas County Jail Sunday, according to records. He is being held on $1,500,000 bond. It is unclear if he has a lawyer.

Please don't let him be...

by Anonymousreply 1May 17, 2021 11:42 PM

He just left a four year old, dead in the street?

Damn, that's hard core.

by Anonymousreply 2May 17, 2021 11:44 PM

I wonder what the mother was involved in?

by Anonymousreply 3May 17, 2021 11:45 PM

What's the murderer's redeeming backstory? Aspiring rapper or basketball player?

by Anonymousreply 4May 17, 2021 11:51 PM

Darriynn. So he's either black or super-white.

by Anonymousreply 6May 17, 2021 11:57 PM

A woman who identified herself as Brown’s mother claimed he was “framed” to the Morning News and said Brown “is a patient of Metrocare Services, which provides mental health care to children and adults.”

by Anonymousreply 7May 17, 2021 11:58 PM

How the hell did he get into the house, take an active noisy four year old outside, and kill him? Where was the child's mother while this was happening? Something doesn't add up....

by Anonymousreply 8May 18, 2021 12:03 AM

I read another article, and it was confusing about what happened (and where the child's parents were) (or weren't).

by Anonymousreply 9May 18, 2021 12:12 AM

I'm reading now that he climbed into the house through an open window and snatched the sleeping child.

by Anonymousreply 10May 18, 2021 5:24 AM

When he snatched the little boy, the little boy didn't scream or shriek? All the way outside?

by Anonymousreply 11May 18, 2021 6:18 AM

𝑯𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝒔𝒖𝒓𝒗𝒆𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒐𝒕𝒂𝒈𝒆 showed a man police said was Darriynn Ronnell Brown lift a sleeping child from a crib and carry him away around 5 a.m. Saturday.

The child was identified in court records as Cash Gernon. He and his twin brother were staying in the home in the 7500 block of Florina Parkway with his father’s girlfriend,

The father, who police did not name, has been absent since March, police said. Cash’s biological mother and grandmother have been looking for Cash and his twin, who has been reunited with them. Their mother believed the boys were with their dad and did not know the father had left them with Sherrod,

by Anonymousreply 12May 18, 2021 6:45 AM

Everything about the circumstances leading up to the murder is just as fucked up as the murder itself.

by Anonymousreply 13May 18, 2021 6:52 AM

That's fucking insane, R12.

Where did the father go???

He should be arrested for child endangerment.

by Anonymousreply 14May 18, 2021 10:32 AM

Is this one of those Italian teenaged mudering dudes?

by Anonymousreply 15May 18, 2021 10:35 AM

That kid was adorable😥

by Anonymousreply 16May 18, 2021 10:40 AM

Apparently the little boy had a twin brother, and the father of the twins left them with this woman he used to date, while the biological mother had been searching for the twins for a long time.

No idea who this woman is, but one of her sons is a teen named Kamron Moori, who spoke to the press and said he and his brother knew the murderer but they had no idea why he would show up and take the kid, there was no motive as far as he knew.

Now Kamron's mother has had all her kids taken away, and the remaining surviving twin is with his bio mom finally.

I really want to know what kind of fuckery was going on here, did the bio dad of the twins steal them from their mom and leave them with someone so his ex wouldn't find her children?

This story is FUCKED UP and weird. Even more fucked up shit will come out eventually.

by Anonymousreply 18May 18, 2021 11:38 AM

Why would a four year old still be sleeping in a crib? Is that normal.

by Anonymousreply 19May 18, 2021 11:53 AM

Haha I thought that too R19

by Anonymousreply 20May 18, 2021 12:25 PM

Imagine being the other twin? The survivor's guilt he'll have. Poor little kid.

R19, since the twins were not technically living there, the mom probably just used what she had available. What's her story? The reporter should've asked the chatty son, "why did your mom keep these children if they didn't belong to her?"

by Anonymousreply 21May 18, 2021 12:33 PM

I don't care to hear this killers sob story, just kill him now. Why did he have on an ankle braclet? Millions of kids have sob stories but they don't kill. Save the taxpayers the cost of a trial.

This story is all kinds of crazy.

And I agree that the other twin who was left alive, is going to have major mental issues.

Not to mention the lingering reminder that he himself was about to be killed, were it not for some random luck.

by Anonymousreply 27May 19, 2021 12:12 AM

The woman they were living with sold the surveillance video to the tabloids

And with their shitty parents, these kids never had a chance

I cant stop thinking about this poor little boy and his twin brother. It seems there is so much more going on here and that surveillance video is one of the most messed up things I have ever seen.

by Anonymousreply 31May 19, 2021 11:24 AM

The teen boy living at the house, the son of the woman who was taking care of the twin boys - you can't rule out his possible involvement. I'm sure LE is looking at him, as well as everyone involved. Needed to be said.

by Anonymousreply 32May 19, 2021 11:40 AM

Oh definitely r32, the teen said he knew the murderer but wasn't friends with him, but his younger brother WAS friends with him. The mom recognized the guy on sight when she saw the video. There's a reason he was there in the first place. Maybe the reason was that he's mentally ill, but you can't rule out something hinky going on with all of them.

by Anonymousreply 33May 19, 2021 11:42 AM

Yeah, I knew the son was trouble when I heard his voice while looking away from the TV and was shocked to turn around and see a skinny white dude.

by Anonymousreply 34May 19, 2021 12:10 PM

by Anonymousreply 40May 19, 2021 7:38 PM

by Anonymousreply 41May 19, 2021 7:53 PM

by Anonymousreply 42May 19, 2021 8:04 PM

Where the fuck is the father?

by Anonymousreply 43May 19, 2021 8:12 PM

Father is still MIA

by Anonymousreply 44May 19, 2021 8:19 PM

So the father disappears and hasn't been heard from but the gf just keeps the kids and doesn't think maybe she ought to try and contact the mother?

by Anonymousreply 45May 19, 2021 8:23 PM

Well, it could be worse — at least there’s a spare.

by Anonymousreply 46May 19, 2021 9:49 PM

That black-and-white camera footage isn't especially clear. In B&W, Darriynn Brown and Kamron Moori would look suspiciously similar. And it was Moori's mother who made the supposed positive identification that it was Brown.

The whole situation is fucked up from every possible angle. I'm so glad I don't have to sort this shit out.

But I'm not sure I trust the Dallas police to do it with due diligence - I hope this isn't a case of 'we got the black guy - he's the one'.

by Anonymousreply 47May 19, 2021 11:21 PM

Yes R45. This kid NEVER had a chance

by Anonymousreply 48May 20, 2021 4:30 AM

The father probably has outstanding warrants against him. He's hiding.

by Anonymousreply 49May 20, 2021 4:37 AM

R47 hopefully there will be DNA evidence to prove if it was really DB in the video. Everyone is so alarmed by this crime we’re all hoping for instant justice but it may take some time for them to build a solid case.

by Anonymousreply 50May 20, 2021 11:42 AM

Is Ben Crump on the case yet?

by Anonymousreply 51May 20, 2021 8:08 PM

I admit I'm kind of interested in a motive here.

by Anonymousreply 52May 20, 2021 8:11 PM

When someone says, "They didn't deserve this" I know they're trash. Such a weird, dumb thing to say.

So exactly what DID they deserve?

by Anonymousreply 53May 20, 2021 9:21 PM

The abductor was clearly taking instructions from someone else; he repeatedly touches his left ear (even seems to be adjusting something in it), hesitates for what seems like forever, and seems to be waiting for a go-ahead. He also keeps glancing over to the window to his left, and if you look closely at the left side of that window, between the frame and the curtain, you will see something white, like an arm, appear. Where the hand of that arm would be, through the flimsy curtain, you can see flashes from a cell phone, and it even looks like the finger of a right hand is scrolling up, up, up.

In the second part of the video, turn the volume WAY up and it becomes apparent that D.B. is conversing with another grown male. That second male gives a low chuckle at one point.

by Anonymousreply 58May 23, 2021 4:52 AM

Also, R58, why did was he so intent on taking the one kid. The other brother would have been just as easy to grab, but it's as if he targeted Cash specifically. Maybe because the methed out step brother directed him to do so?

There are allegations on Facebook that the twin boys had been sexually abused. Either the woman they were staying with was letting it happen to get drugs, or the father sold them for drug money. Some think he may be dead.

by Anonymousreply 66May 23, 2021 7:08 AM

I wondered if this guy's mom was giving the little one attention that the guy wanted or never got from her.

[quote] Dad of 4-Year-Old Slain in Dallas Apologizes for Leaving Kids

The father of the 4-year-old boy kidnapped from his bed and dumped dead on a Dallas street says he will never forgive himself for leaving his son and his twin brother with a friend while he skipped town under a cloud of legal problems.

Trevor Gernon released a recorded statement on his sister’s YouTube account both apologizing for not taking care of his son Cash and asking the public not to be too hard on him.

Gernon said that when he moved to Dallas, he moved in with an old friend, Monica Sherrod, and when he moved back to Houston “after an unsuccessful job hunt amongst other things,” he decided they would be better off with her.

“I felt it was in the boys’ best interest to not disrupt their routine,” he said of Cash and his brother, Carter, who was not harmed and is now with his mother.

“They were comfortable, they were around other kids, and from what it appeared, Monica was a trustworthy person. This choice I made with best of intentions has resulted in a most horrific outcome.”

On May 15, an intruder was caught on a baby monitor camera sneaking into Cash and Carter’s bedroom at Sherrod’s home and lifting the still-sleeping boy from his bed.

Two hours later, a passer-by found the child’s body tossed on the street. Police said he had been stabbed.

Darriynn Brown, 18, who has some nebulous ties to Sherrod’s family, was charged with kidnapping and burglary, but police are waiting for the results of forensic tests to make a decision on murder charges. Investigators have not released a motive, and Brown’s mother has said she believes her son is being framed.

Sherrod told reporters that Gernon left town after being ordered by a court into rehab. CrimeOnline obtained court records showing several outstanding charges against Gernon in Harris County.

Gernon referenced his legal issues, saying in the recording, “I have to fear for my freedom, as it is the goal of some to see me go to jail rather than grieve the loss of my little boy.” He did not disclose his location or legal status.

Crying at times, he did take responsibility for failing to protect the twins.

“I have paid the most ultimate and painful price for my poor judgment and I have to live with this devastation every single day,” he said.

“I will never forgive myself. If I could, I would go back and do everything different. This is a nightmare that doesn’t go away once I open my eyes in the morning. We just don’t understand how this could happen to such a bright and cheerful kid.”

Addressing the boys’ mother, Melinda Seagroves, he added, “I am so sorry that I failed to keep him safe. That is my job as his dad and I was not able to do that and I’m sorry.”

As The Daily Beast reported, Gernon has racked up a string of arrests over the years, serving 68 days in county lockup for a 2018 assault on his father during an argument over a credit-card bill.

The Strange New Turn in the Case of 4-Year-Old Cash Gernon

Following his indictment on felony drug possession charges last November, he failed to appear for a March 29, 2021, hearing and thus forfeited a $10,000 bond payment. There is now an open warrant out for his arrest.

Johnny Flanagan, whose son gave Gernon a job at his shop until they had a falling-out, told The Daily Beast: “He’s one of these guys that kind of goes whichever way the wind blows, you know, and he’ll do good for several months and then do bad for several months and you know, just up and disappear.”

In the recording, Gernon pleaded for mercy in the court of public opinion.

“I’m barely getting through a day that doesn’t take me to a dark place,” he said. “I hope you all could understand how fragile we all are and how quickly things can turn upside down…

“I would hope that we can all cooperate and band together to make sure Cash gets the justice he deserves.”

by Anonymousreply 80May 25, 2021 3:49 AM

[quote] It's on video. He came back a second time, at around 7:30am,' Sherrod added

[quote] Sherrod relived the fateful morning, saying: 'The day that he was missing, I got up late and thought it was weird. I was like, it's 10 o'clock already, you guys. So I figured Cash was still in bed.

[quote] He wasn't answering and I knew something was wrong. I called 911… they [asked] when did I notice he was gone. I said immediately when I got up, when Carter woke me up.

Why didn’t cash wake up when the guy took him out of bed?

Why wasn’t Carter awake at 7:30? He’s a 4 year old boy. It’s not like 4 year olds are up until 1am. I wish my son didn’t wake up at 7:30 when he was 4 years old.

She says she noticed cash was gone immediately when she was woken up by Carter. But she says it was 10 o’clock when she noticed Cash wasn’t up yet. So did Carter sleep til 10 am? That’s kind of late for a 4 year old to be waking up.

Were the kids given drugs to stay asleep?

by Anonymousreply 81May 25, 2021 5:37 AM

[quote]I thought so too, [R65], but if you look closely, you can see it's not him. The hair is different. That said, I think he had something to do with the murder.

R67, In the b&w portion, the guy is wearing a mask and his hoodie pulled over his head and wearing glasses. Who would want to cover themselves but someoneaware of a camera in the room. Who knew there was a camera in the room? The "older brother." That first person also seem like he knew the layout pretty well and was able to pick a specific twin in the dark? Who would know that?

The body types in both portions of the video are similar. In the second portion out does look like the accused but he seems skittish as expected.

It's all so weird. I would like to know of the "step brother" wears glasses.

by Anonymousreply 85May 27, 2021 11:37 PM

I thought the guy in the b&w portion looked white, but then I realized that the curtains that look white in the b&w vid are actually a dark green in daylight. The night vision must turn most darker objects white, which makes sense. So it was definitely Darriyn who took the kid.

by Anonymousreply 86May 28, 2021 12:11 AM

scumbag dad is covered up in that video because he's still wanted by the police. He doesn't want them to be able to track him down. If caught, he'll probably be locked up until his case goes to trial. Because of case backlogs due to Covid, he could be locked up over a year

I bet he wants to test the waters for a Go Fund Me

Killer tried to steal another child 3 months ago

The man who Dallas police believe snatched a sleeping 4-year-old from his crib this month shortly before the boy was found dead has been accused of grabbing another young child only three months earlier.

Additional charges of burglary of a habitation and injury to an elderly person have been filed against Darriynn Ronnell Brown, 18, jail records showed Thursday. The new charges stem from an incident on Feb. 8. According to an arrest-warrant affidavit obtained by KTVT-TV (Channel 11), Brown broke into a home and rummaged through several rooms and closets before the homeowner, who had grabbed a knife, told him to leave.

But Brown continued to damage a door between the home and the garage, and when the homeowner opened the door, Brown came back inside and punched the man in the head, the station reported. Brown then picked up the man’s 2-year-old granddaughter and started walking away, the affidavit says, but the man was able to pull her away from Brown and set her on the couch before Brown punched him again.

The homeowner didn’t want to press charges at the time, and he told police that when he encountered Brown at a store later that month the teenager apologized for what happened, KTVT reported. He decided to press charges after Brown’s arrest in connection with 4-year-old Cash Gernon’s abduction. Brown faces charges of burglary of a habitation and kidnapping in that abduction, and police have said they expect to file a capital murder charge against him once investigators get forensic evidence back.
