Is it a unforgivable transgression to say “Betty” Davis

....instead of “Bet”?That’s the only pronounciation I’ve ever heard out in the real world, though that scary policewoman/hall monitor Joan Crawford at the 10:30 mark.

Oh, never mind. I mixed that up. DRUNK AGAIN!

I guess people sometimes pronounced in “Bet” (as we pronounce Bette Midler) when she preferred Betty.

Don’t stone me!

I also hit POST too soon, and my incomplete OP doesn’t even make sense.

“Oh, never mind. I mixed that up.”

You Bet you did.

I hope you're in Europe, because it's a little early to be drunk in the U.S.

by Anonymousreply 5May 16, 2021 8:43 PM

Fascinating to watch her 'become Joan' in front of our eyes. Great movie stars could turn it on and off.

You’re not too bright, are you, Fern?

by Anonymousreply 7May 16, 2021 9:58 PM

Your whole post is an unforgivable transgression.

Brain tumor, darling. You need to see a doctor.

It's never too early to be drunk in the U.S.

Great find, OP. I think she's tremendous! A class act for certain.

Miss Crawford’s mid-Atlantic accent sounds elegant and posh!

by Anonymousreply 12December 27, 2021 5:35 AM

Her real name was Ruth Elizabeth Davis. She grew up being called "Betty" (a common nickname for Elizabeth) by her family, and then used it as her first name at school. She changed the spelling herself (when she was older) to "Bette," after the character Bette Fischer in Balzac's novel [italic]Cousin Bette.[/italic]

Fun facts:

(1) Bette Midler, who pronounces the name with just one syllable (i.e. as "BET"), was named after Bette Davis, who pronounced it with two.

(2) Neither woman pronounced/pronounces it the way the characters in Balzac's novel would have pronounced it, which would have been "BET-(tuh)"

Koo-zan[g] Bet-tuh

by Anonymousreply 15December 27, 2021 5:54 AM

It's really pronounced "Throatwarbler Mangrove."

by Anonymousreply 16December 27, 2021 6:11 AM

R6 Whatever. “I” can turn it on and off like that.

by Anonymousreply 17December 27, 2021 6:35 AM

The studio suggested Bette change her name to Bettina Dawes.

by Anonymousreply 18December 27, 2021 6:36 AM

Ahem… the lyrics are “BETTY Davis Eyes,” not “BET Davis Eyes!”
